The wendigo was probably friends with the dog, and when Dizzy started barking at it, she probs was telling the deer beast how her owner's GF locked him in the shed during a fire! So the Wendigo decided to give that karen some payback

@@Yvngg_Plxto they were human at one point in time and may have the ability to retain some of their humanity, who knows as there’s not enough studied about them, only folk lore and camp fire story’s, unless you want to anger a native chief I’m open to new ideas. A wendigo is a person that became cannibalistic, wether through force of survival or choice and over time the once human becomes an evil spirit that devours man kind (which is the translation of wendigo).

I am so glad Chloe got exactly what she needed. She had me pissed the first moment she said "you know I have anxiety". So do I, but I'll get a hotel room and bring an animal to safety any freaking day.

I have generalized anxiety disorder and I can also confirm that Chloe seems exactly like the kind of person who treats "anxiety" like it's some kind of fad.
A "get out of accountability" free card, if you will.
I have a severe anxiety disorder that I've dealt with for 18 years and even when it's at its worst I am still capable of being a decent human being. Most people with real anxiety disorders don't feel the need to announce it all the time. She got what she deserved after locking that poor dog in the shed and leaving it to die. Cruelty to animals bothers me more than cruelty to adult humans.

When the author gets that type of reaction from a reader, You know it's a good read! To top it all off the narration was a chef's kiss, I'm sure I heard a twinge of sarcasm and jealousy when describing Gary, the little things make it so much better!
I once had a rescue dog that was used as a bait dog. She passed away a few years ago, but she was the sweetest dog I've ever met.
Animals love you unconditionally, people have conditions. Honestly, if my boyfriend didn't like my cat and wanted me to get rid of him I would have told him to find someone else because I'm not going to get rid of someone I took care of for years just because he didn't like him.

@Ruth She was named Callisto because her big sister was Artemis, the English Mastiff, who taught her how to wrestle like a big dog. Callie is a chocolate labradoodle, so I thought it was extra cool that she looks like a little bear and fits the constellation.
I love how much this author loves pibbles. They really are amazing dogs. I love ours so much. She always looks like she’s smiling and has an adorably massive, but also completely empty head.

I have friends that have them and I love them! I had an English Mastiff and she was awesome!
Whatever animal was in that situation, I would have put my life on the line to save them.

What kind of heartless person would leave such a sweet pup in a FOREST FIRE??? If i heard a warning for any kind of natural disaster, my cats would be the very FIRST ones id secure and get to safety! Tell me about it, since my female dog German Shepherd RINA past away last September 11 every day is miserable! I still have her twin sister Ziva, both born the same day same mom same breed same everything, always together always with me until that day, two days prior she was diagnosed with a killer tumor, watching her gone was the most horrible experience I ever had, we have to put it to sleep for good and I was hugging her until her last breath. Since that day even with Ziva around life is not the same. Every day I live on fear knowing Ziva some day will have to go. That day will be the end of how I know life as it is. Their sincere love and company is above anyone. My dear puppies, just writing this I'm crying to no end. Wish you the best of the best. Kind regards from BC.

This is such a good story. We had bad wildfires out in Oregon and the first thing I did was get my kitties myself and my daughter to safety. Then when I had time I went back for other things. But I wanted all them safe first and foremost. That woman was awful. Screw her.
@Arielle - Same. I live in Florida and over the past 5 years, I have had to evacuate the state on two different occasions when hurricanes hit. The first time, I had two senior cats and you better believe they were all packed up in the car and ready to go.
The second hurricane was just this past September and by this time, I had adopted my little rescue Maltipoo. You had better believe she was all packed up in the car and we drove 4 hrs to GA.
My animals are like my children and there is no way that I would ever even consider leaving them behind, even if that meant I had to stay behind with them.
I had a similar thing happen where I missed all of the texts and calls being at work, when I got home the fire was less than a mile from my house. I found a note from my neighbor saying that they took my dog with them to their parents down valley and I was welcome to join them. I was so thankful for them doing that, they stopped the fire before it reached town but that was scary.

Not gonna lie, I was in "Eating popcorn while enjoying the unfolding scene" mode when OP was calling out his girlfriend over the phone near the end of the story.
I suspect most of us were, those not cackling like the wicked witch of the West
I'm going to be honest, really love the story. ^^
I legitimately hated Chloe from the start, and I honestly believe she was cheating on the main character with Gerry, with it being possible that she never actually broke up with Gerry to begin with.
I also don't think she even suffered from Anxiety, from the way she acted I think she was an attention seeker and used anxiety as an excuse. (While she might have had anxiety, there's a lot of evidence to suggest she's an attention seeker. Namely, she got upset at the protagonist for not answering her and for going after his dog, whom she had locked in the cabin.)
I do feel that the protagonist made a mistake dating Chloe. From the backstory we got of their first meeting, it was obvious that she did not like dogs and wanted the protagonist to choose between the dog or her then and there. That should have been a sign for him to kick her out of his house.
Also, I feel like the ambiguity of the ending adds an even bigger layer of justice in that she might not have been killed and eaten immediately, but rather taken back to the Wendigo's home to serve as dessert, meaning she was forced to watch Gerry be eaten by the thing and knows that there's no one coming to rescue her since she burned down that bridge. If the Wendigo is really feeling sadistic, it'll slowly eat and torment her long before eventually finishing her off. Either way, she got her comeuppance.
As for the protagonist, he was in the right. Warning her wouldn't have done any good. Even in the extremely unlikely event she did believe him if he warned her, she wouldn't have been able to escape in time. Plus, the protagonist needed to get himself and his dog to safety without alerting the Wendigo, and so he couldn't waste his breathe warning someone who'd just whine about him not spending time with her, even though she spent most of her time away from him.
Wendigo are insatiably hungry no matter what so as much as we would all enjoy that outcome, alas, it isn’t likely 😆

What a well written story! It got me super involved immediately and I felt the characters were very realistic. As someone who very much does have anxiety - I dislike Chloe SO much! Omg this voice calms me down like no other, not even my anti- anxiety meds, even telling horrifying stories about torn bodies , ancient beings and whatnot. I'd gone cray cray or over the bridge already if not for a story every day. It's the climber's rope I cling to with all my 80,2 lbs.
