    When you sat that old Reo engine up on the bike to see how it looked, I could not believe my eyes. I am 67 years old and when I was 2 my dad had a Reo Royale. I have photos of me and my twin brother being pulled around the yard with my dad in tow. I loved that old mower and being the mechanic twin, I also have photos, of me with dad's big old cap on working on it. Believe it or not long after the old mower fell apart, that old engine powered a go cart for us and I could never part with it. I still have it after all these years sitting in my work shop. I think these mowers were sold more in the north, because I recently joined a Reo engine Facebook group and they seem to be more common up there. I was born and raised in Southeast Texas and never saw another one there. I really enjoy your channel and you have inspired me to get my old Reo running again. My dad and my twin are gone now, but those fond memories will be with me forever. Thanks buddy, Loren R. Silva, Petit Jean Mountain, Arkansas.

    Watching you dismantle that Schwinn brought back 50 year old memories of changing tubes and things when I was a little kid. Ball bearings always went bouncing across the garage resulting in a test to see how few the race could run on without the remaining ones falling out. I discovered standing the bike upside down like a tripod on handlebars and seat was the perfect height for a seven year old to do major suspension work. I came across a spoke wrench one day and what began as a simple job ended up with a horrible wobbly mess. The more I tried to straighten the wheels out the worse they got! I don't think I ever really got the hang of truing wheels.

      Saved and bought a Phantom when 12. It carried me and 50 newspapers twice a day. It was and still is one one of the most enduring and smooth riding bikes. At 78 cannot ride it anymore lacking power. May check out putting an engine on if one can be found not needing welding to install. It was a wonderful time to be a kid. I took it on many trips on the roads around Pueblo Co. And chased a few ball bearings too.

    Started watching your channel about a month ago to learn to fix some of my equipment and keep my mind busy during the pandemic. Im pretty sure I have watched all of your "will it run" stuff. My wife says she could likely clean a carburetor just from being in the room while I'm watching 😂😁 I have Learned a ton from you sir. Fixed all my stuff and now look for free equipment to tinker with. So far I have fixed 6 mowers, 8 trimmers and 4 snowblowers and am always looking for more. I build custom teardrop campers, engines were way out of my comfort zone. Love your videos. Subscribed. Thanks for the informative videos and making them easy to follow. I have tried the TH-cam channel thing myself but struggle with being on camera and in the public eye. Kudos to you sir, I dont know how you do it.

      It is, but I think it's a bit too much on this particular build...Id go for a black tyre, picking up on the rest of the colouration, (plus a lot depends on what he does with the engine in the finish). On another bike where red was only an accent colour, then I think the red tyres would be a real killer!

  • @Hugo_Overthere
    @Hugo_Overthere 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Mustie, Steering geometry is not as simple as you're assuming. You have too much "rake", and therefore too much caster. If you bend the forks forward then you also have to reset the steering tube angle forward. The steering tube axis has to intersect the ground one-to-two inches in front of the center of the front tire's ground contact patch.

      @@johnenright4969 I've designed and built three recumbent bikes from scratch, but not until after I thoroughly researched bike geometry and related ride characteristics. The advice I gave is like a good car alignment. It keeps a bike tracking straight instead of darting to either side. If you've seen a few of Mustie's videos where he rides his creations, that's a recurring problem.

    Be real careful with those fenders. Vibrations cause the metal to fatigue and fail at mounting points. Especially when it tangles with the front tire, it's really ugly. There's several people on the forums who have been sent to the ER and even ICU from fender failures. Also - even if you're only going 25 mph pleeease get a front brake. If you want to keep with your theme look for a front drum brake hub. I promise you having a front brake will not only be way safer, but will greatly increase your enjoyment of the bike.

    I’m really starting to love this build. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a apocalyptic rejuvenation come to life. Personally I think the black tires would look better, but also I would kick that seat back up a little even if it means leaning forward a tad. It sure will beat hitting a painful bump and then ending up in the fetal position on the ground with tears in your eyes LOL. Never a dull moment watching and learning from you that’s for sure. Thank you for taking us along. You my friend are the living definition of “waste not want not“ and you do it with a style unmatched! Hiya Mustie, when knocking the headset cups out, try putting your rod / punch on the inside of the steerer tube, that way you don’t run the risk of marking the paintwork. You could even make the tool, it’s just a tube with four slots cut in it and they’re slightly splayed outward. When you insert it through the cup, the splayed part springs out and engages with the rim of the cup.
    Anyway always look forward to your great videos. Tim 🇬🇧

      I agree but, remember this video is about building around the 4-cycle engine he bought and comparing it to the Project Farm build. Would be nice to see them racing against each other out at PF's farm. Heck, a drag race between PF's motorhome and Mustie1's Police trike could cap the festivities.

    Hi Mustie, finally found something that i do different, learned so much from you i don't know where to start.. but fitting an inner tire on a bicycle using a bit of baby-powder on the rubber makes everything 'settle' so much more easy. a bit messy maybe but you should try it.
    cheers for all your videos! never miss one.

      @wind_song 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would probably look the best, indeed. Still kinda curious to see what the white tires would look like mounted on the bike, but I guess he will end up with the black set of tires. We shall see.

    I'm not a huge fan of the gas tank cover, I feel it's too shiny even against the cleaned up chrome of the other parts of the bike.

    • @David-yo5ws
      @David-yo5ws 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, i'm with you on that. I feel that if he uses the black tyres, it should be 'orange' and if he uses the 'orange' tyres the tank should be black. I think the white tyres would be too garish UNLESS he got the black tyres with white rims (which I thought he said he was going to get in Part 1). What do you say jneutra1?

    If the inner tube isn't sitting in the tyre uniformly, you can deflate it almost entirely remove both the tyre and tube and move the innertube by the valve around in the tyre. In effect just spinning it around so it finds the most even fitting within the tyre. If it doesn't spin freely using some french chalk or even talc to lube it a little so you can get it free of any patches where it sticks which cause the bobbling when the tyre is inflated. If there are group of patches on the inner tube it may cause it to inflate in a non-uniform manner and cause the bobbling effect. Then you can only get a new inner tube to get a tyre that is uniformly inflated. I think I told you this a couple of years ago. Maybe you could write this down somewhere.
