    Another tip is when you format your new SD card, don't use the built in format option in game mode. Manually format your SD card in desktop mode using the included KDE Partition Manager in the start menu. This will increase the SD downloading speed significantly for most users.

      I ended ordering a protector, both times dust & shit got underneath, small specs, but im borderline ocd about that crap.
      In my honest opinion its not necessary. on the incredibly low chance you somehow scratch it ifixit has replacements.
      You literally need to forcefully be prodding it with a nail for lasting damage.

      I have three accessories. A Jsaux upgraded docking station but a steam deck dock will do the same job, plug and cable, and a screen protector. The docks cover all of the following 4. Hub 6. Stand 7. 90 degree adapter 8 kickstand. The upgraded dock is important for 3 usb ports to match that of the steamdeck.

    I got that grip case cover that was last on the list. The one with the x on the back. It’s actually much better quality than I thought it would be. And it came with 2 screen protectors with wet wipes and lint stickers. I thought the design was a little gaudy but the lines on the back are not white. It is solid black but the designs are gloss and the rest is matte. The pictures are just showing the bright studio lights reflecting. I’d recommend it!

    Yes! One accessory that we NEED to get working on this. AR glasses. Specifically the Nreal air. I'm building a deck that needs a dock to run the glasses so I can continue to feed power to the deck. This build is gonna be a game changer, but I need to know what Dock will do the job of routing all that data and juicing everything from an external battery.

    Regarding the SD cards: A2 class cards have faster random read speeds, so if you're installing larger games to the card that's what you want to go for. Also have a look at the price per GB: you can get the Sandisk ones in capacities up to 1 TB, but it's actually cheaper to buy multiple lower capacity cards totalling that capacity. Since you can hot-swap the cards (that means switching them out while the device is on), that might be the better option.

    • @MainCave
      @MainCave  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good comment. My SD card I had for my switch and so didn't want to buy another. As I say in the video, it's fast/large enough for me with emulation

    I like the updated JSAUX dock myself.
    But the most important add-on for the Steam Deck is definitely a memory card.
    Power bank is not hugely important for me, because I mostly play indie games, and i keep the TDP turned down to between 3 to 9 watts, this gives up around 8 hours of battery life per charge for the deck.

    I work from home and my employer provided me with a Dell laptop, a couple monitors, and a docking station with a USB-C connector. That same Dell docking station from work also works perfectly with the Steam deck. I just plug my Steam deck in instead, and wham. Full desktop PC mode, multi-monitor setup, keyboard and mouse. From there I can use flash drives to transfer ROMs from my personal PC to the Steak deck to play via Emudeck, or even just straight up use it as a PC if I want to do some lightweight tasks and don't feel like using my regular PC with that space heater of a GPU (3090 TI).

Also got the chance to test it, 40-99% in around an hour(didn't time it just mowed the lawn, may have been less). This bank also got me through a solid 12 hour or so power outage earlier this year, and I was one of the lucky ones who's power came back in less than 24 hours....I didn't have the steamdeck then, but kept my phone topped off.

    From this list, I'd go with the SanDisk Micro SD card. Considering the pitiful storage capacity Valve offers with even their highest tier model, I think expandable storage is absolutely necessary. The Micro SD card may be the least exciting of other options on this list, but it is by far the most essential. The SanDisk Micro SD card is my choice.

    • @derp195

  • @IcoKirov
    @IcoKirov ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Just a note on the sd cards. if you need it for regular modern games, then you need A2 card as they are faster and the deck can utilise their speed. A3 are even faster, but the reader on the deck can't utilise them, and will treat them as A2 cards. so if you plan on adding big, heavy to load games, A2 is the way to go. A3 are more expensive, for basically nothing (other than future-proofing - like if you plan on using that card for other devices that can utilise A3 cards)
    if you plan on putting small indie games and/or roms and such, speed is not *that* important, so you can go for the cheaper A1 as on the video.
    i would personally don't go bellow A1, unless i use them for low end emulation - 8 and 16 bit. for them even older class 10 card (no A grading) would be ok, maybe even lower grading, but i mean, you can get like a 4-8 GB card and you can store ALL of those games on it. so no point in buying a big one, just use one you have from old phones.

    • @MainCave

      Thanks for that, appreciate it 👍🏻

    • @ajuric4606
      @ajuric4606 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have noticed that 128 and 256 GB cards are more often on sale than larger ones, so it's cheaper to buy 4-5 256 GB cards than 1T card. And there are sd card holders for 5-10€ on amazon that can hold up to 24 cards, so just a thought...

    • @IcoKirov
      @IcoKirov ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ajuric4606 1tb cards are usually not price effective. Often 2 512gb are cheaper as well. And if we include sales yeah I guess the lower ones are even better price/capacity.
      But also the lower you get the harder to optimize the capacity properly, I mean more unused space overall will be left when you combine all of them. Not that this is a big issue

    • @ajuric4606
      @ajuric4606 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@IcoKirov I agree, not worth to go too low. In my opinion, going for multiple 256 cards for some bigger games would let you keep them organized per card, rpg games on one, strategy on other, simulations on third and so on. Since deck utilizes speed of SD cards so well, no real need to have everything installed on it all the time.
      Plus organizing games in any way kind of helped me to organize other things in my life.

      Although I myself still don't have any cards for the deck. I have the 512gb version and I have it half filled. I have a old 64gb SD card from a phone, I think it's a1 if not lower. And I have a couple of indie games on it, but that's it. I rarely play the big AAA titles that take a lot of space, so I don't need that much space.

    When it comes to the screen protector I had the same problem the second time I ordered one, the first one I got was perfect but a few dollars more. I messed up the first application. So I went to apply the second screen protector, but it fell from my closet shelf. It broke on impact leading me to bug a cheaper brand and have the same issue you had.

    The screen protector works better on the 64 and 256 models . Because they don't have the new screen, the only way you can get a good protector screen for the 512 deck, if they make a protector that's like the anti glare screen.

    I just got a decent messenger bag made to hold a 17" laptop, including a padded compartment. It has enough room for my Deck in its case (the 512 GB version's special case), my portable 15" gaming monitor, 60% keyboard, wireless mouse, headset (that folds down pretty nicely), USB hub and all the cables I'd need to set everything up. Carries nicely, protects everything, and it's not obvious that I'm an aging nerd with a bunch of portable gaming shit on me.

    I use a magnetic usb-c adapter, the adapter stay on my charging cable and the magnetic tip in the usb-c ports on my steam deck. This way you have much less chance of breaking the non reparable usb-c on the deck long term plus it makes it easier to charge. It can pass up to 100w and is usb 3.1 gen 2 compatible so you can use this adapter with a dock etc.
