I grew up along that road. Timestamp 5:51, a sandwich shop sat at the corner of Moonshine Road & Rt. 72. Timestamp 7:52, Chapel Road a 'haunted' house sat at the intersection. Timestamp 11:20-we used to pick watercress near this bridge every spring. Timestamp 17:00, straight stretch of road, we lived a long there. Had two big blue spruce trees in the front yard, with a pond next door. Timestamp 19:30, there was at least one house up there. It was one of our school bus stops. Haven't been back there in years. What a great place to grow up! Thanks for sharing.

While I understand some things need to be done for the greater good of society. It is sad and insulting that all those people lost their homes and property for a project that never happened. I wonder who has liability if someone falls in that Well you found. It should be filled, or at least fenced off. Thanks for showing us the area, and telling us the story Cliff.

I was planning to walk up at Swatara S.P. on Monday anyway on my day off, so the release of this video was perfect. I did my own video recording (for my own purposes) and found the sticker. Also met another couple about 5 minutes later named Jeff and Loraine who were looking for it as well. Very nice people and I felt bad I got there first. It was so nice walking up the abandoned highway knowing a history of what I was seeing. I had no idea until I got home later in the afternoon that about 10 miles north of where I was, was the huge pile up on I-81 after one of the snow squalls hit. So very sad and also explained why I heard and saw so many helicopters as well. Cliff, I sent you an email with pictures.

Cliff, I traveled that road many many times before the state took over the properties. The project was part of Project 70 which was enacted in 1964
Just after the bridge where you hid the sticker, there were a few single homes on the straight stretch and in the dip at the end of the straight stretch, there was a single house where a blind man lived. I think it might have been where you found the deep well. Also, about halfway in the straight stretch, there was a farm and every fall they would butcher and have the steers and pigs hung from 2 leaning poles against the barn. Near the end of the paved section on the right side of the highway, there was a house that sat below the road surface up against the bank. There was a car counter facing south about 50 feet beyond that house as well.

  • @MotoMengy

That was really great. I've gone mountain biking on the Swatara Trails before but not for a long time now, and I've found my way onto parts of that abandoned highway but I never realized how long it was before. Just a tid-bit. Guard rails, at least in NY state, were renamed guide rails, after a woman sued the state because they didn’t “guard” her from a cliff. So NY Dept of Trans changed their name to guide rails because they are not designed to prevent a violent crash from going through or over them. (Even though they have saved countless lives, they cost a few also). For a similar reason, the ends used to be ended, abruptly, with a metal cap, then they started having a big curled “fist” at the end, now they are bent over and buried in the ground or have those water barrels “protecting” them.

Before I forget to ask - At the parking area for the AT at the junction of 443 & 72 there are ruins. Have any idea what was there? If you cross to the other side there is also remnants of what probably was a house. Found a part of the curb, a patch of asphalt from what was probably the driveway, the flat area was most likely the house. What really caught my eye was a big patch of daffodils in the woods.
This was a great video. I’ve been that way a few times over the years. I know about the well beside the road but the ones you showed I never knew of. I was there Saturday and went down around the Trout Run and Moonshine Trails. The remains of the wrought iron fence still gets me wondering what life was like there. Back in the woods I did see May Apples (not blooming of course), Trout Lilies, Violets, and Garlic Mustard. I keep wondering if it’s possible, in Winter, to get back in the area off the old road. Guess more of the deep exploring will have to wait until the colder temps again. A lot of poison ivy deeper in and won’t be able to see the snakes. I’ve seen quite a few big snakes in that park. Black Snakes of 5-6 feet are common.
That walk on the highway is like a scene out of a post apocalyptic movie. It’s really creepy walking back as the sun is setting and the helicopters are flying overhead.

It gets tiny orange berries on it but nothing eats them I guess cause can't get thru the thorns.
