- This game and its guns, uniforms, equipment. Most of it is wrong. And yet it somehow manages to feel more authentic than BFV or Vanguard. God I love this game. And it unlike its successor it actually teaches real history in it's war stories. (For the most part)

I love how Battlefield 1 is the last AAA shooter that cared about a historical setting and was given justice in the most beautiful way possible.
It had its flaws but basically everything after it has been handcrafted of nothing but flaws and glue so it stands out as the closest thing to a good historical shooter in the modern era.
Like Victory says, its the best of a bad bunch.
It deserves some praise for what it got right, but not for what it gets wrong. Just like everything else.

Can we appreciate the fact that most recent showings of Australian troops always put their leaders as shithead British officers, but BF1 shows Whitehall as a flawed officer, but ultimately good man, who respects his Australian troops.
Most video games would've had him been like "I sent the men to the fort!" and nixed the "Only those who volunteered," line that makes him much more of a reasonable leader
Yh games and films tend to portray British officers as stuck up and condescending to the colonial troops. This may be true for some of them but not all. In the Gallipoli Landings Anzac Divisions still had a 1/3 of their men being British born.

I'm really happy that you went back to BF1. It's the game that effectively made me interested in history. I Cry every time i see the ending to this war Story or the final ending Cinematic. It migh not be the best game in the series, and might have some macanical problems, but for me, this game is one of the best Games ever made. It did for ww1 what BF5 tried to do with ww2. Before i Played Bf1, never knew of stuff like the Brussilov offensive, the Battle of Passendale, or the Battle of the Somme. To quote "The Act Man": "It made me interested in History (again)" And that's what matters to me.

@@MortRotu I second this. Indy and co. are so astoundingly dedicated to history and the effort they put into putting those videos out weekly along with all the extra content for both world wars (and the interwar period) is awe inspiring.

8:51 - that's the Pedersen Device. It was made to convert the M1903 to a semi-automatic carbine. Thousands were made by the US, but almost all of them were destroyed after WWI. Wasn't made until 1917.

In Hardline, it's established that the BF world is different from history, where guns are freely sold between countries and even encouraged

This game gets a lot of hate due to the surface level inaccuracies, but if you look past them, it’s got a remarkable amount of history attached to it.
The most fascinating one I found, was the Tanker story. There was a female Mk1 Tank crew during the battle of the Somme (HMLS 13A, We’re All In It!) that punched through German lines, got stuck in an impact crater, and had to send for help. They were stuck fighting off the Germans from inside the tank until the Black Watch showed up to help the survivors.
How I actually found the original sources for my college paper five years ago, I have no idea, as the links from the forum I originally discovered the existence of this story no longer work… but I know the after action report exists in some book about WWI tanks, and it’s remarkably similar to what happens in the tanker mission.
This game deserves more credit than it gets. No, it’s not really accurate, but it’s authentic, and respects the history despite the liberties it takes. It’s not trying to glorify the war, and it shows how brutal, and pointless the whole conflict was… rather than the historical comedy show that is vanguard.
Have to disagree entirely. It's good that the game inspired further research but this game is just as bad as vanguard.. if not worse because y'all seem to defend battlefield because apparently your immersed.. okay.

They just didn't show respect over the multiplayer where you had to buy a DLC to play france wich was one of the main belligerents, this is the only thing that really angered me

Agreed BF1 is at least a possible in it's time frame, which I think is is more important than complete historical accuracy, Vanguard on the other hand is completely impossible no matter what part of your story you are in.

So! Actually, the armor suit is historically accurate. And it could be surprisingly effective at times!
Decent amount of shrapnel protection, and sometimes it even faired well against rifles.
The Italians made use of it more with their Arditi units, but the Germans made some for machinegunners to use, specifically for shrapnel protection.
Don't know if the Turks ever used them. But the MG-08 Armor troopers are literally and metaphorically the most metal MFers.
@@AnimarchyHistory By the way! In the Gallipoli maps in the multiplayer that came with Turning Tides (Cape Helles and Achi Baba) the Ottomans do indeed have their khaki uniforms present. They also redid the facial textures as well to make them dirtier/have more stubble on the cheeks and jaw. Of course, this came out after the campaign, but it would've been cool if Dice had retroactively updated the models of these missions to reflect those uniforms.
ANZAC troop uniforms are present in those maps as well, but instead of recording whole new voicelines for them they just repurposed the British voicelines from the base game.

@@AnimarchyHistory if the m1903 is put into bolt action you can actually swap the bolt and you can see the gun without its experimental upgrade of pistol rounds. It’s a little unknown fact and it’s super fun to use the gun in its proper bolt action configuration. You have to try it!
@@AnimarchyHistory another cool tip. The smle is the only gun in the game that’s bolt action and allows you to remain looking down the sight when you cycle the bolt. This means the devs understand why the gun is chosen by the birtish. This is one of the few bolt action rifles that a allow bolt cycling with aiming

CORRECTION: HMS Iron Duke is the model for the Dreadnought and she was based in Scapa Flow with Home Fleet at this time. But it is a historically accurate battleship that was in service with the Royal Navy at the time, in fact there were four of them. So, not impossible, plus, saves on assets given they only appear here and as a behemoth in Multiplayer. And its not "inaccurate" per se.
Also, noted that in the last mission there was an aircraft I didn't see. That is a Bristol F2B "Bristol Fighter" or "Biff", would not exist yet. BUT, it is a magnificent aircraft.

The only RN battleships present at Gallipoli were Queen Elizabeth, of the class that bears her name, and a cacophany of old pre-dreadnaught battleships. While none of the Iron Dukes themselves were present, I still like that they included the bombardment at all, and the fact that they used the behemoth model to save on resources is fair. The French actually had a significant naval commitment in Gallipoli aswell, but I understand that would be asking too much from any videogame
I thought it was the ID, bit of a shame but understandable why they reused that asset for a cutscene lasting all of a few seconds.
Actually, when it comes to graphical assets like uniform, you must now be aware that they mostly did the "incorrect time" uniform because they wanted to use the most common one + the coolest one in the Multiplayer... instead of having the whole dozen maps MP content adjust to the couple of Singleplayer missions 🙂
The real stand-out thing about BF1 even after all these years is the codex. By playing the game and completing challenges you get pages of information about the actual history that the game is based on, from the battles and tactics to the weapons. It is very cool to see how committed to history the team was even with the liberties taken for gameplay and aesthetic reasons.
Also, fun fact: When they added Gallipoli-themed maps in a later DLC, they updated the British and Ottoman forces' uniforms on those maps to be more historically accurate.
This. A lot of people forget about the codex and just focus on the prototype weapons to discredit the game, but it's one of the few games that reward your good gameplay with true historical knowledge. DICE knew they were taking huge liberties to make WW1 fit into the Battlefield formula but they still put effort into making it authentic and believeable. Not to mention it sparked interest into WW1 (and History as a whole) in the hearts of lots of people, perhaps far more than any historical shooter before it. It really is a fantastic game, too bad they didn't stay on this track with BFV.

@@lambn25 always have to remember that battlefield is a video game first and foremost. Gameplay has to be fun and it's ok to take liberties for gameplay reasons.

Wouldn't Gallipoli be the most nationally and ethnically diverse front of the war, and possibly of all time? Literally a battle between the two most diverse empires on the planet at the time!
Potentially, although I’d say the western front probably had the most diversity towards the end of the war as many different ethnic people were fighting on it. Also the Balken front was ethnically diverser with Germans Austrians and Bulgarians fighting Serbs, Greeks, Italians, British (some ANZAC’s and other colonial troops), french, Romanian, and Russian troops
During WW1, Gallipoli was one of the more diverse fronts of the entire war. However, I assume that the Balkans Theatre would have been more ethnically diverse. Every faction of WW1, except the USA, fought in the Balkans campaign. Each faction, except Serbia, is an empire consisting of a wide array of ethnic groups.
However, the most nationally & ethnically diverse fronts are to be found in WW2. The British Empire, consisting of subjects from a wide array of countries & backgrounds, fought in every front except the Eastern Front. The Eastern Front features a multitude of ethnicities within the Red Army ranging from ethnic Russians to Siberians to Tajiks. The Wehrmacht, despite being predominately German, consisted of over a million foreign volunteers from across the globe. The Normandy Invasions involved countries such as the British Empire, the US, France & their Empire, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands & Greece.

We became decent mates after the war and hold joint services there.
There was great respect from both sides. Even a cease fire so both sides could collect the dead. They shared cigarettes and conversed a little, as well as could with the language barrier. There was even occasions where they would throw food to each other when there was no fighting.
I served 9 years and no Ozzie digger would ever hang shit on the Turks. Both countries regard this as the foundation of their identity as a Nation. Lots of respect for them.

Thats a Winchester M1895 at 5.23 as used by the Russian Empire . Thankyou C&Rsenal for providing me with that knowledge with their series on the history of small arms used in the war. I also think Forgotten Weapons has done something about these Russian Winchesters . The Russian were sold nearly 300000 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company .

Without having to tell you (since you've realized it in the game), some of the weapons you'll encounter were either prototypes or experimental during WWI but from other nations and like you pointed it out later on in the war. Gun Jesus (look him up) of Forgotten Weapons did mention one of the inaccuracies of the game is not having a gun jam on you when in mud and etc. But he did also say that he understands that if such a feature was in the game, there's a likelihood that frustrated people would not play the game.

Both the Turks and our Australian soldiers used maxim machine guns on the tripod and wheeled mounts, there weren't enough vickers to arm the Australian s at this early stage of the war. A couple of fullas from the 1st light horse later in the campaign also brought along double barrel shotguns for trench raids which they had confiscated off them by officers.
God I fucking love this game, True, Sometimes it may not be as accurate as it could be, And often it is quite bad in historical accuracy when you look at the details, BUT, Not Being Historically Accurate doesn't always mean a game can't be Fun or Authentic, And Unlike Vanguard, Battlefield 1 has Both of them, And does them REALLY well. Vanguard doesn't do any of them good, But Battlefield 1 manages to be Really Fun, And feel really Authentic at the same time, While also not always being historically accurate, As an example, the Hellriegel is in the game, A gun that there's only one or two Photos to prove it exists, Yet DICE was like "Fuck it, Here you have it, This is what we thought it would Feel like to shoot it!" And I love that, It is unrealistic, Sure, But unlike COD, the Fun and the Authenticity the game provides is enough to allow me to Suspend my Disbelief, Something in Wich Vanguard fails beyond words.
although BF1 isn’t 100% accurate, what matters is that it’s grounded in its foundation and the immersion/atmosphere makes up for it. BFV, although fun, lacks atmosphere and a heaping ton of historical accuracy, but at least the immersion is delivered through the chaotic gameplay. vanguard literally didn’t give a single shit about any of that. just straight goofiness to the highest degree

The Ottoman Vickers gun is representative of BF1 as a whole for me. Yeah, technically it shouldn't be there, but it's more fun that it is, and it looks absolutely perfect. The history is often set aside for gameplay, but it's still there. It's still respected to a high-ish degree.
This game never got the love it deserved, and I'm so glad it is now

I love this mission, and the campaign for this game a lot. It may be as inaccurate *as* Vanguard at times, but it's definitely authentic, and incredibly respectful to their history. Instead of shoving forced, fake, 'woke' culture down your throat, they give you beautifully written summaries of historical events, and let you play as historical minorities without even telling you, such as the Harlem Hellfighters in the first prologue of the campaign, and the British and other European colonial troops in the multiplayer. Even the small details like the models of weapons, background noises of combat, NATIVE LANGUAGE SPEAKING, and even just the mud, blood and grime that smears your equipment when you move around just makes this game one of my favorite historical, casual FPS games to go in and have fun in.

Not gonna lie, As a Turk, once I played this game and especially this campaign, I got this fixation for Australians, especially Gallipoli.

So you mention that the Warships we see at 6:16-6:18 are correct but having had a look they look to be Iron Duke class ships and none of those were at Gallipoli, in fact the only 'super dreadnought' present at all was Queen Elizabeth along with some of the Battle Cruisers and none of them used a 5x2 centre line gun layout. Most of the Battleships present were the older pre-dreadnoughts that were considered obsolete and could be freed up from other duties to be assigned there. Which in turn lead to one of the main issues with the naval bombardment in that they couldn't elevate the guns high enough to properly bombard a good number of the defensive positions.
it nice seeing anzac history got represented in battlefield one, it's a delight that part of our history and one of our founding moments as a national identity formed as new zealanders

I love BF1. It's not accurate, but it captures a sense of reverence for the source material that most AAA game publishers just don't have anymore. Helps that the game is actually fun too.
Like it was pointed out in the video, the game still took the time to educate you about the proper history behind the events (even if some cosmetic liberties were taken for gameplay purposes). That’s what Vanguard gets wrong. The small details could be more forgiven if the game actually showed respect for the true history it was portraying, or at least was up front about being an alternate history sort of thing.
I bet you didn’t know this but if you put the Springfield experimental on single fire the game plays a swap bolt assembly animation and you can use a actual Springfield.

I think you would love Through Mud and Blood. It is amazing and badass as fuck even though they get a major thing wrong, and that being the size of the crew for the Mark 4
I loved this game. I just wished they gave some more love into the campaign with a few more war stories. Like the Canadians at Vimy Ridge, or maybe the fighting in Serbia.
Even with all the inaccuracies the game felt like WW1, its period correct in a way that doesnt really match others cause its also fun on top of being as accurate as possible. Many people will state issues with it and its multiplayer but nobody cant deny the kind of atmosphere the game created with its setting.
AND they speak the correct language!

I told my friend who’s buying tabletop models from Ukraine that if he received a message of the Russians destroying his models during an invasion he should go to the government and say that the Russians destroyed his investments in Uktraine and boom we’re at war.
That being said good to see you getting in BF1. Now I may wish and hope you do all of BF1, mainly because I like your commentary and historical breakdown but I also know this is your channel as well but I’d love to see what you think of the other missions.

So I wish that “thru the mud and blood” was a Canadian tank crew because that is the actual Canadian armoured corps motto (though it would be a bit of inaccurate because Canada did have tank regiments but they didn’t see service)
It's interesting that while in the campaign mission the Australian uniforms are really wrong, but in multiplayer their uniforms are far closer to being accurate.
Well, it's not necessarily wrong since he mentioned it's more late war uniforms. But not a problem, tbh since it still fits the time frame of WW1. Even if some uniforms don't fit their respective events
The multiplayer maps for Gallipoli came out much later than the single-player and they put effort into making the uniforms accurate, but didn't go back and change it for the single-player.
Some notes:
The Springfield thing you picked up was an experimental conversion of the Springfield rifle in what i think was 32 ACP.
As for why Bishop's uniform looks like ones from the Boer War, its because He did serve in the Boer War, and was part of where his war hero status came from

One thing to note as well is in Multiplayer the Ottomans were in fact given their historically accurate uniform (Khaki) and featured mostly Historically accurate Anzacs on the Map Called Acchi Baba probably spelt that wrong, anyhow take a look!
Only loading five rounds into the SMLE is historically accurate, articles and training manuals said the men should only load five rounds to save the stress on the magazine spring. People would have loaded 10 for sure, but it was common practice for soldiers to only load in 5.
Outside of combat. Once the shooting starts, you'd be using all 10.
The problem with Vanguard's SMLE was that you could _only_ load 5 rounds, you'd fire two of your mag, take out a stripper, load two bullets, and still have three in the clip, when you could've easily loaded 7.
@@TheDeadfast Not necessarily... it takes double the time to reload the rifle when 10 rounds are inserted , vital time that could mean life or death. I bet that soldiers would have preferred to load the sing clip over two. I appreciate that the statement is purely speculation, but it was official policy un the Commonwealth forces. Also, these men were professional soldiers and were expected to perform in combat as they were trained to do so. The NCO's and officers alike are sticklers to policy, especially when that policy to to ensure their soldiers kit is in tip top condition and would ensure their men follow procedure. Were 10 rounds loaded? most definitely, but the fact is that it was in training manuals and was a drilled practice for the soldiers to only load five rounds.

Really though in a game with so many experimental or flat out fake weapons surely loading 10 rounds isn't too far fetched, and players should have the option. My comment was more of an interesting tidbit rather than defending that sorry excuse of a game.
They loaded the magazine to full capacity in training and in field conditions, if and when single rounds were needed the magazine cut off was used. In the case of the landing it was full magazine, cut off applied a round loaded in the barrel ready to go safety catch on with bayonets attached .

I have to say, the Runner is probably my favourite War Story, though it could be ties with BF5 The Last Tiger.
But as a history nerd, learning about the wars that impacted our world and those who were involved in them really interests me. And as I delve deeper into them I start to find out that Australians have usually made a impact in them too. As a Brit, I look back and I really feel bad for how Australians were treated, I mean I think the whole area of Australia and New Zealand and etc. (Not really great with geography, so not sure what other countries are there), I just think you guys are pretty cool and interesting as a whole. Also, you guys seem to go almost everywhere, I recently found out that Australians were in Vietnam, obviously not as much as the US, but watching the film "Danger Close" really opened my eyes for what Australians have contributed to history.
Been watching a few of your videos recently, including the Last Tiger one, and I like the content. The sight on smle is based on martin galilean sight. The lever action gun is Winchester m1895 mainly used by Russians. While the semi auto Springfield is m1903 with pedersen device firing .30-18 auto also known as 7.65x20 longue similar to .32 acp. The cup type grenade launcher is attached to Winchester model 1907 chambered in .351 wsl used by both France and Britain. The top magzine feed lmg used by the Turkish forces is madsen machine gun (m1925, 26, 35 and 1937 models) chambered in 7.92mm

the 1903 experimental you picked up at around the 9 minute mark is a 1903 springfield with the Pedersen Device (a replacement bolt that would slide into place after taking out the normal bolt) allowing you to fit a magazine of .45 ACP ammo which you'd use to suppress the enemy as per the walking fire doctrine that was being developed as a means to break the stalemate. It was invented in 1918 to be produced in large enough quantites for the never-to-come-to-be 1919 spring offensives. C&Rsenal have a primer episode about it

BF1 literally made me care for World History class back in high school. I'm actually glad too that during that time, BF1 was also coming out, and one of the projects I've done for WH was for Kaiserschlacht. BF1 gave me "some" background but did literal research on the event itself

I can't remember what there "breakthrough" gamemode was called but I remember there was this one time playing with my 3 friends where, as the whistles were blowing, artillery pounding around us, vehicles engines surging, the new zone opened up, and my squad/the team charged down the hill with the sun at our backs. The music swelled up and I got chills. I miss these kinds of moments and nothing since then has been able to give me that feeling.
Gallipoli is pretty much have the same effect on us Turks too, it was a huge morale boost to the Turkish soldiers during the War of Independence and more importantly it gave us our founding father Mustafa Kemal (Later Atatürk)
This battle later on named "Last Gentlemans War" because of how the ANZACs and Turkish soldiers become closer and friends after the first ceasefire, i'm glad after the war we kept that friendship by giving the huge care on ANZAC memorials and graves just like our own.
The 1903 Experimental was a real thing. It was a modification for a Springfield called a Pedersen Device, basically you take the bolt out, drop in the device and it turns the springfield into a .30-18 Auto carbine. However, the inaccuracy part is in that it didn't exist at the time of this mission. It was designed in 1917 and didn't enter production until December 1918. And the cool part was you could very easily convert the rifle back to firing .30-06, which they did after the Pedersen lost out to the Garand in semiautomatic rifle trials. Nice to see cool things like that get a little bit of limelight.
Also would like to point out the detail in BF1 when you use the 1903 Experimental as your primary then equip the K Bullet or switching to .30-06 by pressing the fire mode key, it shows an animation of the player taking out the Pedersen Device, put in the regular 1903 bolt, and chamber the rifle/K bullet. Vice versa if you switch back to your primary
BF1 actually gets guns right, because it uses real ones, even if its just throwing around uncommon and experimental weapons. This isn't also as bad since BF games are alternate history so have some freedom

This game was made 5 years ago and is doing astronomically better than some games taking historical settings that are horrendously incorrect that it can actually make you sick. This game shines through all the dirt as an older and more valuable gem.

15:22 that's a Winchester model of 1907 with what appears to be a French made 20 round magazine and a probably fictional rifle grenade launcher, it was primarily used as a backup rifle for pilots by the French, British and Russians.

I think this game has some inaccuracies because the multi-player and such. The outfits, since most of the game will be players in multi-player, makes more sense as it uses whatever equipment. The weapons are sometimes ridiculous, but they all seem to be based off of real life weapons. I remember seeing this comment of saying this game isn't historically accurate bur historically mirrored or something like that. Like this game isn't real, but it is pretty good for a fun and engaging video game

There's an extra treat in the credits of BF1 for you Australians if you finish all the campaigns. Once you've done them all, there's an extra section called "Remember Us" followed by the credits. Watch them, you won't be disappointed. Also, bring some tissue

I think something that was missed (followed by me not being able to find sourcing, maybe Masse's "Dreadnought" or "Castles of Steel") so classify this under the "this is what I heard" column: The gangplank you walk down to get to the beach was true to life. A transport ship with a lot of the troopers had been beached and they had to construct a gangplank to get people down. I spent 15 minutes trying to corroborate this comment with precise historical sourcing then decided I'd spent enough time on a random TH-cam comment so take it as it is but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.

I got to say as a Canadian my most favourite historical story is about a single Canadian soldier who took a town by himself this man is known as Leo major A French Canadian man who took a German occupied town all by himself one of my favourite World War II stories and I love it when some games do mention my country in the stories makes me feel proud and patriotic
And during the Korean war with 18 other men took Hill 355 from 14000 Chinese Soldiers. And held it against their counter attack by calling strikes on his position at ranges so close that they often deafened the mortar platoon he was in contact with over the radio.
Real crying shame we Canadians aren't in Ukraine. That lot fights like Canadians themselves.
