#9 How to survive... speaking Dutch!

- Speaking Dutch can be pretty tough. Weird choking sounds, crazy expressions, and an seemingly endless combination of words. Still, we asked some people to give it a try. For people who want to know more about 'Swaffelen': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swaffelen
Thanks to www.learndutch.org/ for helping us make this video! - ตลก
We'd love to hear your suggestions for part 2 of this series! Which Dutch words would you say are real tongue twisters for foreigners?
Survival Guide to the Dutch use the word Beschuit
USe the word meervoudigepersoonlijkheidsstoornis
Het woord 'groeien' lijkt makkelijk, maar is voor veel niet-Nederlanders bijna niet uit te spreken
Try this one: kindercarnavaloptochtvoorberijdingscomite
Probeer 'pitje'. Moeilijk voor niet nederlanders. En archeologie.
Theyre so afraid of the G sound haha
More incapable. The Dutch G is a very specific sound that is hard to learn to say, even more in a fluent matter when linked to other letters. (Not even all dutch people can say it)
I think the soft G is easier to learn for other people than the hard G in this video
I found it a lot easier once I realized that it's the exact same sound as the Spanish "j". I learned how to pronounce THAT more than 43 years ago, so I cheat and use it when it comes to trying to pronounce anything in Dutch that has a "g" in it.
It is, most forgeiners who come to the Netherlands pronounce it like a soft G.
Wimsem - Tekenen & Knutselen nederlands!💪
It's funny how the woman at 0:48 actually pronounces the 'g' sound and word 'gezellig' very well. But then she goes on saying to the man he's really good, even though he's awful.
ikr
She's his wife. Maybe that's what she's used to do: praise him and his ego. Maybe he needs it :D
They both did pretty good lol
I hate when they pronounce the G even "rougher" than the Dutch guy and think that's how we speak. (I'm Flemish btw)
Thror jullie taal is gewoon tantoe nep :D
As a norwegian that has learned dutch, it takes a while to learn to tone it down. First day of training the sound i had a really sore throat. By now it’s more subtle :)
JohannesGames04 ga weg met je tante
@JohannesGames04 Leer anders eerst even zelf correct Nederlands, met je lelijke straat taal. Woorden zoals 'tantoe' staan nog steeds niet in het Nederlandse woordenboek... (':

Haha yes I laughed so hard I was like how in the world are they going to pronounce this?
I always found it interesting how in Dutch these long words are all stringed together, while in English they are usually split up. 'verkeersbord' versus 'traffic sign' or 'winkelcentrum' versus 'shopping mall 'and so on. Pretty sure most languages go with splitting up?
Yes you are right, but we have a good reason for it. Its to make a distinction between a long distance runner and a long distance runner. You can have a person thats long and runs distances and you can have a long distance runner. In dutch we make a distinction: "Een lange afstandsloper" is a tall distance runner, "Een langeafstandsloper" is a long distance runner.
So yeah its easier to split words up but it can also cause confusion about the meaning of the word.

Fun fact : if you say "gezellig" fast enough it sounds like "keselek" in Indonesian meaning "choking" which could probably accurately describe the feeling of foreigners when they try to pronounce those "g" sounds.
If you say ‘gezellig’ the right way and fast it still sounds like ‘gezellig’
Well no
Guido Heintz don't say "keselek" with english accent. It definetely has almost the same pronounce

On my fathers side I am Dutch (Lokker), Swiss (Greuter) and Irish (Murphy) and on my mothers side German (Preussner). I am fluent in German and can read Dutch but speaking and understanding it are very different. On one trip to Europe I visited family in northwest Germany and then took a train to visit friends near Gouda in the Netherlands. It was a learning experience of pronunciation of Gouda in English, German and Dutch.
I find all languages interesting. And there is an English equivalent to Swaffelen, it is Swaffling.
The language works in mysterious ways. Loved that one haha
I think that these guys they are not born to learn a foreign language. That's all.

The 'arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering' is a mean one, in the Dutch language you are allowed to contract different words into one new word. 'Arbeid' = labor, 'ongeschiktheid' = incapability, 'verzekering' = insurance. In all it would translate to 'disability insurance'. Now lets do a video about the Dutch word 'meervoudigepersoonlijkheidsstoornis' a Dutch word that is often used when you have a fight with your girl friend or mother in law.
The "g" sound is a killer for Americans. I tried to learn Dutch from my friends when I stayed with them outside of Haarlem. They said I spoke Dutch like I was a Belgian.
Luckily, they all spoke beautiful English. And French. And one spoke Chinese and another German.
We really need to up our game in America.
To be honest the Americans in this video weren’t half bad in pronunciation. I’ve read a few people say Dutch is the closest language to English speakers. Not sure but they are both Germanic
Hmm. Next time try Scheveningen, Reclameblok en dropveter. Also, tell the Americans that, during the declaration of Independence there was a vote on what language should become standard for the USA. Dutch lost from English by just ONE vote.
It was German, not Dutch.
Roman Pushkov you are complete right.
We could all be trying to type German on youtube because IBM, Apple and Microsoft would have launched in German? That's less violent but similar to saying "If Germany had won WWII we'd all be speaking German". Funny how one change could make all the difference.
You can't be this dense... they would indeed all have launched in German because the official language of North America would have been German.. with more countries who now speak English following suit.
I believe this is an urban legend. Look up Muhlenberg legend on Wikipedia :)

Holger S. Same oppositely.
dat kan zijn, in het less vandaag hebben wij gelernt, dat ze de nederlandse taal voor 80 jaar gereformiert hebben. het oude duits en nederlands have been more similar then they are today.
Dutch and German are very similar. The German dialect at the other side of the border is almost the same as my own native Dutch dialect. I am talking about Plattdeutsch or Nedersaksisch.
but that is only in niedersachsachsen, close to the border....germans from other parts of germany do not understand plattdeutsch too. i am from bavaria...we do not understand dutch at all.

Smart gorilla21 En omdat Zuid-Afrikaans ook een germaanse taal is zoals Nederlands. :)
zuid afrikaans is grotendeels verbasterd Nederlands met engelse en locale invloeden. Nederland settelde er een colonie en england nam het later over, ergens halverwege 1800 ofzo als ik me niet vergis.
Dutch influence due to colonisation in the early years of S.A. ..that's why the Afrikaans language exists which is similar to Dutch.

English has very many words that are written exactly the same as Dutch words. Sometimes they mean the same thing 'arm' is 'arm' in both languages and means the same thing referring to the body part, (but it also means: to be poor, in Dutch, while in English it can mean 'to prime an explosive for detonation').
