It's amazing that they managed to disempower a strong character with tons and tons story building behind her, and turn her into a victim while she guns down hundreds of human beings. Remember when Tomb Raider was about exploration and puzzle solving, and the combat was the smallest part of the game?
Garrette somehow becoming weaker despite shooting hundreds of people? There's a large philosophical idea behind all this

Victoria Sultana I mean, seriously. They fixed 1 problem, only to replace it with something worse. Namely making Lara less of a sex object (that's good), but then beating the shit out of her. So instead of a sexed up woman we have a mentally traumatized woman who was almost raped for no reason other than shock
Agree Garret you put it nicely, the game was about puzzles, her personality was amaizing, and people said now she is more human and we care for her.
We want to go adventure with her, with a strong character, idont want to take care of a whinning kid, also for all those saying that she is now more realistic because she is not sexy.
A lot of cosplayers with hard training manage to have a body similar to tht of Lara, also Laras breasts and sensuality are part of her character, by removing it, islike i remove his cap from Mario.
But well we are in the era of games are suits and care for money or publicity not gameing

My favorite was how the game kept hyping up this "deathless army" of really dangerous baddies that you couldn't kill and they'd ruin your shit, and then you finally find some and a couple of blasts with the trusty shotgun will take care of them. Hell, some of the armored humans took three, even four blasts with the shotgun to kill, so this big bad deathless army aren't even the strongest enemies in the game.
Beating the final boss by throwing empty tin cans around was dumb as hell too.

That brings up an issue I have with the last one as well. Yes, the original Lara Croft was sexualised to an extent, but at least she had a personality. Retooling her to be more realistic is fine but, if your character doesn't "want something", it's hard to sympathise with them.

@@MoltenPlastic Actually that and the desexualisation were both just a consequence of the misguided movement towards "realism". Even after they toned her design down a bit in the first reboot, classic Lara still literally dressed like a stripper trying to do a "sexy archaeologist" look, which no real female archaologist would ever even _dream_ of wearing on the job (unless she has one of those nightmares where you show up to work not wearing clothes). And, the fact that classic Lara could literally do a standing somersault sideways 16 feet through the air while simultaneously firing dual handguns with infinite ammunition at enemies with perfect accuracy was fun, but also very "video-gamey". When the 2013 reboot decided to aim for "gritty realism", both had to go. The question then becomes whether or not you think "realism" in goddamn *Tomb Raider* was a cause worth pursuing in the first place.

I really wish I'd played Rise of the Tomb Raider before I saw this review because now I can't help but notice every fucking time Lara says she's got to do something or how there must be some way to do some other thing and it's really getting on my tits. I'm enjoying the game but I might have to finish it with the sound muted.

This video perfectly encapsulates what I hate about the new Lara. They tried far too hard to make her sympathetic, and all they succeeded in doing was making a more annoying character.
The old Lara was an unapologetic bitch who took what she wanted and murdered anyone who got in her way.
They took old Lara's charisma, style, seeming sociopathy, and unbreakable determination to raid tombs for basically not much more reason than sport, and replaced it with... well, I'm still trying to work out what they replaced it with.

Fun fact: The person doing Lara's voice acting is her first and second voice acting job, which is why she is terrible at sounding in pain or tired without actually being so.

It's like as if you had George Clooney voice Batman, oh wait!? That actually happened, and he he sounded more like himself than the caped crusader...
+akiflyer Not really. Sounding like you're in pain is a part of regular acting as well, you just have to do other stuff at the same time. I've done regular acting myself, and I can say with 100% certainty that I wasn't actually in pain or tired most of the time I was acting out those things (except when I got slapped in a play, or landed wrong from a staged fall and nearly broke my knee (that happened at least three times by the way)). Acting in itself requires you to *become* the character and portray them well. If you can't become the character, your portrayal of them is going to be sub-par, because you won't be able to relay things to the audience properly... such as being in pain.

Audience: "Wait, is that chick in pain or did she just remember she left her fancy earphones on the sunken ship?"
Yes, in voice acting you may have to rely on one sense to portray your character. But regular acting heavily relies on the voice too (except in silent films), because when one part of the act is shoddy the rest falls apart. Considering the voice actress for Lara knew there would be visual portrayal of Lara's pain and tiredness too though, her vocal responsibility was no bigger than when she was in regular acting. It's not that she's not used to voice acting, it's just that she's bad at portraying some things. And everyone is - I suck at lovey-dovey stuff - but usually they accept their faults and stick to things they're good at, or if they're particularly desperate they work on improving. Camilla obviously wasn't ready for this job, and I am honestly curious as to why Crystal thought she would be a good choice since she can't even keep a British accent on for five seconds.
Sorry about the length, but there really are some things needed to be considered here. You can't just wave away someone's sub-par job at something important because 'they don't have experience'. If they don't have any experience, why did you hire them in the first place? If it was that important to have them, why didn't you give them a few lessons to improve their performance? It's like taking a newly bought dog to a sitting competition when you know they haven't learned the command yet.

One of Yahtzee's best. Incidentally, one of the earliest Tomb Raider ZP's is also my favourite. I think his hatred of Lara Croft is intoxicating.

The Mia Farrows joke made me spit bits of pickle spear onto my screen. I love this guy.
What bothers me about these new games is that Lara is supposed to be a survival specialist, but she takes so many unnecessary risks even without additional danger that would drive her to do so. Just the intro, the ice climbing scene has such ridiculous leaps that are supposed to make the player gasp, but I don't really see the point. If the character itself is trying so hard to get in difficult situations, I don't really feel empathy for her if she trips and dies, but getting into situations that are out of your hands and you just have to survive them are so much more stronger. The game also has planty of those moments, but the unnecessary tension fillers are time wasters.
I lost it at the voice impression, I hope he does more of those LOL

I don't dislike new Lara as a character because she's strong. I dislike her because that's ALL she is. Her entire personality is merely 'strong'.

Really good quote, that. I think it ties back to how Most Writers Are Male, and as a result merely being "female" is treated as a major character trait in its own right, since it differs so radically from the default character baseline which is "male". I'm reminded of another quote about pro wrestling, specifically how WWE's female wrestlers weren't being taken seriously: "A division is made up of characters, and _"woman"_ isn't a character!"

I was hoping that Lara wouldn't be as... damsely in this one. I enjoyed her journey in the last one. As an origin story her pain and suffering seemed natural. But if she still has some kind of scared little girl in an unforgiving world persona it wouldn't make sense. This review made it seem like the latter is the case.

Weird, I thought I'd said this before, but contrary to what Yahtzee says at 3:35 I do strongly recommend putting on deodorant before visiting a brothel, and probably brushing your teeth too if you have the chance, because quite honestly speaking, a girl will generally give much better service if she isn't screwing up her face with disgust as soon as she comes within three feet of you.

After playing through the game, it didnt feel like a tomb raider game anymore ( I played the old version Tomb Radier). With the new TR game I have this to say, It had some of the best graphics I've ever seen. That is all I have to add.

It strikes me that soft taco shells are the only possible way we as a civilized society can have upside down tacos that actually work.
The reboot was a directionless mess consisting of a half-dozen different competently done but albeit disparate gameplay styles thrown together clumsily, without any overarching themes or elements tying it all together. It was more like 4 individual quarters of a game mashed into one package, as Crystal Dynamics took players on a tour and stopped every few minutes to say, "Okay, this is a cover-based third person shooter bit! Have fun!" or "Okay, this is a survival horror bit! Have fun!"

I was really hoping that Crystal Dynamics had replied to this feedback by adding some direction and implementing a sense of cohesion, rather than releasing a game that felt like it was designed by marketers who used focus groups to conceive the most mass-appealing game possible. It's really disappointing that they did it again. Disappointing, but not surprising.
+Aria DiMezzo Ever since Legend, it's been apparent to me that they don't give a fuck about the franchise and only seek to dumb down the games entirely, one iteration at the time to suit the larger demographic. They might as well call it: "Triple A: Rise of the circle-jerk of trite and over-worn game-play mechanics that have totally not been taken directly from other mainstream title's." cause that's exactly all the Tomb Raider franchise is now sadly. One massive collection of all the things people usually despise with the: "Triple: "A." market as of late.
I miss the tight focus that they put in Anniversary which clearly established that Lara is not a murderous action hero but an actual tomb raider
+Suwat Saksri I don't have any really history with the series. When I was younger, my brother tried to get me to get a PSX and used Tomb Raider 2 as a reason. I played the demo and full game with him a few times, but I never saw the appeal, so the reboot was the first Tomb Raider I ever really played. It seems to me that the core of the series was "sexy female Indiana Jones" more than anything, and Indy never ran around mowing people down for the Hell of it. Even without knowing what the series was supposed to be, it was obvious the reboot missed the point, because the reboot has no core of its own, which sucks because it IS fun. All the little parts are done well--the survival horror parts, TPS parts, it's all good. The package as a whole, though... just doesn't work. It's like a lasagna being made out of great noodles, great chocolate syrup, a pair of $400 shoes, and a Lamborghini steering wheel: sure, all the individual parts are great, but that doesn't mean they belong in a lasagna, or that the lasagna itself is good.

Just kidding, obviously you're correct. Because the 4 I'm giving the PC port of Final Fantasy V confirms I don't agree with the majority of gamers and critics anyway. I think I gave Tomb Raider a 4, too, but it wasn't an official review.

I like this game because it's one my mum plays. She read somewhere that playing games frequently can improve eyesight, and has been playing this whenever possible. She used to love the old tomb raider games when she was younger, and now she loves this. So despite its flaws I do like this game.

As someone who at the time only had a ps4 and last Christmas got an Xbox One I'm really glad I got Rise Of The Tomb Raider it's an excellent game! A bit silly though releasing it as a timed exclusive though.

I think I found an MMORPG for you to review. It's been mentioned on The Escapist for a while. I would enjoy a first impression review on Runescape. It have some key things that are different from WoW, and I think it rivals Guild Wars 2.

I enjoyed this review, but despite Yahtzee's opinion I found out this game to be one of the best gaming experiences in recent years. I totally recommend it.

I never thought I’d play a game with too many weapons but here you go. Those reminders that ‘upgrades’ were constantly available drove me bat shit and like he said half that cadre of guns and bows I lugged around never even got used. It was just too much with very little payoff
