I think a David Cage-esque, slasher film, game, thing, should be played from the killer's perspective. I want to fail all the qte's so that the killer is hilariously incompetent, jumping at the kids, only to fail a qte and tumble down a hill in hilarioud Norman Jayden-esque fashion.
Someone made a video doing something like that in Heavy Rain... turned a "dramatic" chase sequence into something from a Jim Carrey comedy movie. Also, hello from the future! Everything... kinda sucks, I wish it were 2015 again... :(
@@JimRFF I would also recommend Call Me Kevin's series on the game, he does that for the entire thing but his personality is funny enough to make it work
@Jason Fenton: It'd be amazing if, by doing badly enough, you could get into an extremely long fall down a hill like in Hot Rod but full of QTEs that don't work.
+Eugenideddis I've seen a let's play of it and while there are only the odd one or two characters i would actively want dead i find there are none that i would actually want to survive either.
+Eugenideddis Wow, normal people?, well a big FU to you too then. The only character i wanted dead was Emily, the rest were pretty decent guys and sure as hell don't deserve to die.
+Eugenideddis The ones who want them to live are the abnormal ones. yahtzee is more normal then most people in general anyway too. His ZP persona is amazing though.
Well he wondered why it was funny so I explained why that might have been, not much of an issue complaining people will see the joke and enjoy it before they ever even read this.
It's weird how developers nowadays aim for a sort of "Let's Player-ability" when making their games. Do you think a bunch of stuffy old stockholder executive types sit around conference tables discussing whether or not Pewdiepie could help boost this game's sales?
That's the problem. Game devs want to make some art or fun, while Publishers and board directors only want games that are marketable on "The TH-cams." Which means my hope for creating a bloody, grim, and dark Celtic game for Xbox is forlorn.
I kinda get this criticism but I also think, despite the fact that Until Dawn is not at all a great game by any means, it does have its audience. Playing it once and never playing it again is a legitimately good time, and playing with a group of friends who are all making their own decisions based on which characters they're controlling is a fantastic time. Ultimately, I really do think that this is a great "movie night" game
Interestingly enough, the event that Yahtzee talks about at the end could end up killing a character or saving him/her later on. The game gives you a choice to kill person A or person B but kills person B no matter what. However, choosing person A will cause person A to hate the character that made this decision and even leave him/her to die later on in the game.
Ehhh... not exactly. It's the second game the two remaining characters are forced to play that has the effect you're talking about. The game Yahtzee's talking about's only effect is that it might piss someone off enough to provoke someone else to violence later. And, in that particular case, the only affect that violence has on the story is minor dialogue changes.
So, really, choose one, the other or do nothing makes little difference in the actual storyline, because, since the same person dies no matter what, the other person will always think you chose to save them.
sdmitch16 Well, that's good to know. I honestly don't recall that particular expression. Although, it would be hard to remember every detail from all of his videos.
I thought Mike looked AND sounded a lot like Grant Ward from Agents of SHIELD, probably because they share the same actor, Brett Dalton. PS: I hope I don't cause one of "Ward's Warriors" to come and shout their battle cry!
I'm not sure how I feel about Until Dawn really. I'd say its a game that's trying to have it's cake and eat it but it feels more like it's going around offering everyone a palette of differently decorated cake slices but the moment you try more than one slice you realize it's the same cake except maybe one slice has a few less grains of sugar or an extra QTE thrown in. Is the fact that all the cakes taste the same disappointing? Yes, I'd say so when such a large menu is falsely advertised for the most part. Was the cake good? Yes, I enjoyed the story of Until Dawn and the plot may be somewhat all over the place but it's still fun and the whole experience was rather tense and enjoyable and some of the characters actually had arcs (a bit) I'd recommend Until Dawn overall but I'd say wait for the price to drop before you buy it since it's not currently worth it's asking price if you are only going to play it once which I'd highly recommend to avoid seeing all the bullshit trickery that's been jammed into the cake on the second playthrough.
+OgreSamanosuke Those little breaks in the doctor's office were far creepier and more disturbing than anything the game tries to throw at you. I started lying to the game because I made the mistake of being honest and got hordes of clowns and needles - it was really horrible.
I love the idea of Yahtzee restarting the chapter with the saw-esque trap to try and get different outcomes 4 times - "Damn you buttons, why won't you work?!"
1:30 Okay in fairness, you CAN have some of them say how strange and inappropriate this feels and some of them imply they are only really doing it in service to the one doing the inviting.
I was literally just wondering when Yahtzee would release a Zero Punctuation on Until Dawn and I get a phone notification that Yahtzee released a Zero Punctuation on Until Dawn. Thank you oh great Yahtzee, I always knew you listened.
Mackenzie Roberts Yes. They get posted a week early on the escapist website, though not this week since Yahtzee has been away for the last few weeks and hasn't made a new one yet.
The slightly faster walking when there's a person screaming bloody murder nearby drives me crazy in video games. Like who pitched that idea at the "Lets make this game realistic" meeting?
With all those quick time events I kind of expected Jason to make an appearance in this game, you know something like :"Jason! Jason! Jasoooooo-" *slash*
*What "Until Dawn" Says*: "Every choice has a consequence, and you can save all the characters if you pick the right ones." *What "Until Dawn" Meant*: "Every choice has a quicktime event, and you *can't* save the characters unless you pass them.... oh, the choices? Yeah, they're only like a third of the equation."
+cooldude56g That's not necessarily true. The one black guy in the jersey will die unless you do something specific, and there is no quick time event to save him.
+MysteriousTomJenkins Yeah, they basically guaranteed that the first legitimate death for most people playing without spoilers and walkthroughs is going to be the token black guy.
+deirdreaithne Well, not necessarily. I mean, how many people were thinking, "wow, I sure wanna save Emily, this great terrific individual!"? Not many. The game almost tempts you with her predicament, saying, "You know you want her to die. Let it happen here. Bitch deserves it.", and with that choice saving both of them if you don't screw up later.
+Usoland, Descendant of Noland and Destroyer of Sugar Isn't it kind of fucked up that the game wants you to kill off a character because she's "annoying"? Emily hasn't hurt anybody or done anything wrong (other than hug Mike, who is apparently allowed to cheat consequence free); that's not a reason to abandon her to die.
The choice about whether to save Ashley or Josh might not have an immediate effect, but if you choose to save Josh over Ashley, Ashley leaves Chris to die outside the cabin where he's torn apart by Wendigos There's much more branching path and choices than a Telltale game, for example.
the ash v josh choice doesnt actually matter for shit. ashley and chris' relationship status goes up if you pick her but it has no impact on gameplay. it's the ash v chris choice that actually matters; if you "shoot" her she wont open the door....even though she literally begs chris to "let me choose to save you" in the trap.........video games! (yes i know this comment is 6 years old and about an extremely mediocre game but i am a Fucking loser!)
+Robin Powell The plot is kinda interesting The underwater sections are a little confusing but mostly boring and lame. It's a little like bioshock horror edition. Except all the enemies are shit and I don't even think you can die. I got hit about 4 times without healing because I was just sprinting past them and it didn't seem to have any effect on gameplay.
+Py Saiko No problem madame! *Tips a giant tower of hats, fails to react as the majority of them collapse to the floor.* One of the enemies is just a dude with an orb on his head who teleports and makes your screen distorted. He's like Slender, but in basically no way creepy.
@@muskatDR Slasher villains are like the Black Knight from Monty Python & The Holy Grail, or the one man in the witch village from that same movie Black Knight: *gets arm cut off* 'Tis a flesh wound! The man from the witch village: SHE TURNED ME INTO A NEWT! (A newt?) ......I got better.
When someone first told be about how Until Dawn took player choice into effect, I cheekily replied "Is that a BioWare game? No? You sure? It sounds like a BioWare game."
IIRC that one scene where character A choose between whether character B or character C dies has a consequence on the story, but it doesn't actually pay off until much later on. If C is the person who's supposed to die, and you chose B to die, B will now hate A's guts. Much later on in the story A needs to rely on B to get to safety from a nearby threat. If B is still angry at A, B will do nothing and let A die.
To be fair, the Josh or Ashley choice has at least some weight to it. If you choose josh then Ashely will dislike Chris and can even kill him depending on how you play the game. If you choose Ashley then she will save Chris's life
Not entirely true. Following that scene is when Ashley and Chris are held up in the warehouse with the saw blade coming down from the ceiling to "kill them". If Chris chooses to shoot Ashley with the prop gun, both of their doom is sealed when running from the Wendigo after the Stranger is killed as she will lock the door on him. Later on, she will die when being lured by Hannah using mimicry.
You know what? Fuck Until Dawn, The Video Game. Why not to render all that shit into the DVD and use your DVD controller to press directional buttons when needed? It's done, it has been proven to be done with few little "interactive minigames" DVD's extra features had! If you so much love to make a movie, why not just make a movie, but use the DVD controller as your controller?
Takeshi Kovaks No. I said I wanted these "interactive" movies on DVDs. Because why not? There's literally nothing else seemed to need other than DVD controller for this kind of games.
But you a still want them to be interactive and controllable. So all you are doing is moving the game from whatever console you're playing it on to DVD
You know what? Fuck FIFA, The Video Game. Why not just turn on the sports channel and use your imagination that you're playing the players when needed? You know what? Fuck dating sims. Why not just watch a romantic movie and pretend you're one of the main actors when needed? You know what? Fuck Forza and Gran Turismo. Why not just watch a race on tv and think you're driving the race when needed? Do you see your stupid logic here?
Until Dawn is far from perfect, but I felt it did a lot of things right so I cut it a ton of slack. It's way more interesting and interactive than anything Cage has made; has more actual branching and decision impact than anything Telltale has yet put out (though not quite as good as Life is Strange does it); and uses a voice cast of mostly people you don't hear in games, except for Peter Stromare who is awesome so who cares. The plot goes a bit goofy later, and a few decision points aren't actually branches (though the decisions will have different impacts later), and the stats seem pointless but actually impact things in interesting ways. One example is if you haven't gotten max Bravery on Sam she won't be able to make certain decisions that near the end will fuck over her friends.
+OgreSamanosuke TaleTale have turned into a one trick pony - I lost interest after The Wolf Among Us. I personally didn't like Life Is Strange, the characters are just irritating, boring and hipster - they fail on all levels to make me invest any emotion in the game. David Cage has produced one decent game - I thoroughly enjoyed Heavy Rain. Beyond Two Souls is an unholy abomination, these game only work when there's possible consequences, also why can't Jodie die before the script requires it - God I hate her, budget Ellie from TLOU, yes I know Jodie is actually Ellen Page rather than an Ellen Page knockoff. This is not enough to keep me from hating her. I actually really enjoyed Until Dawn, but it has seriously limited replay value.
Life is Strange isn't by Telltale, incase I didn't make that clear. And as a company that only produced one other game (Remember Me, which I really enjoyed but was very flawed) it's impressive they're already beating Telltale at their own game. The only downside I see in LiS is Ashly Burch being Chloe, making an already annoying character worse. =\
OgreSamanosuke I know Life Is Strange isn't by TellTale, but you brought up Life Is Strange so I offered my opinion on it. "The only downside I see in LiS is Ashly Burch being Chloe, making an already annoying character worse." There's a character in Life Is Strange who isn't annoying - I must have lost consciousness, when they introduced a new character who died immediately. This would be the only way to not be an annoying character in LiS..
What I didn't like was the fact that at first, the game was about a generic "lunatic friend tries to get back on everyone with an enormous prank cliche" and then out of FUCKING NOWHERE turns into a "last minute Blair Witch supernatural monster story that has no connection to the prank, but by pure coincidence happens on the same night".
Ben Dickie What I meant was that It gave the impression of being tacked on, it all seemed rather pointless. It would be like if the second half of Citizen Kane was about battling space pirates.
+Andrew Ryan but did you enjoy it, David Cage does the same thing but shittily because he doesn't have any forshadowing. Until dawn has some/light foreshadowing, not great, but better than none. REMEMBER WHEN LUCAS CANE JUST GOT KUNG FU POWERS OUT OF NO WHERE AND KUNG FU'ED A HELI, CAUSE I SURE FUCKING DID
Gotta disagree with you there. The game isn't about the elaborate prank. It's about the deaths of the two girls who died a year before, and more specifically what killed them. The perpetrators of their deaths spur everything that is to come. And the prank is a direct result of their deaths.
This game inspired Yahtz to make a design document about what a great slasher game is, and then he didn't play Party Hard, which came out before he started writing that blog post, and follows it to the letter.
I hate how most games nowadays feel that in order to have an immersive story they must substitute and sacrifice gameplay for cinematic cutscenes. In a weak attempt during these many cutscenes to remind you you're still playing a game, they occasionally throw a random qte at you as if to say "Are you still there? Good! See?! You're making a difference! Things would've really gone South there if you weren't around to mash x like crazy" Honestly, whenever I play any game now and my character gets hurt in a cutscene, all I can think is "You're lucky there was no qte, or you would've been sorry."
+Wesley Tomsky the campy horror genre is hilariously good and bad at the same time. evil dead, dead alive, trailer park of terror, etc no one is saying those movies are technically 'good' (direction, cinematography, special effects, and so on) but they have a unique charm to them that makes them extremely entertaining. I love movies like the room, for example, because they are literally so bad that they're funny as a result. until dawn takes influence from these types of influence on purpose, which is good imo, but they overdo it in a couple ways. it was a fun experience. i'd give it a B+
Serial killers are supposed to murder people, doesn't mean we cheer them for it. The way I see the best way to respect something that had a goal of reaping annoying cliches is to treat it like it filled itself with annoying cliches and shit on it
+Wesley Tomsky Ya, some of the characters are incredibly large cliches, and some are just missing half the time, but some of them are surprisingly detailed with interesting little tidbits that you have to pay attention to notice. Like Ashley being a psychopath, or Emily being surprisingly brave and responsible in a crisis, or Mike being a surprisingly smart and brave individual who ISN'T the female lead's love interest and is at the same time obsessed with getting it on. Or the female lead not having a love interest for that matter.
Yeah, that's a little true. It kinda reminds me of Mass Effect 2's ending, where the only difference comes with the fact that you either just have this many people with you or everyone dies, and any in between is just kinda... There.
Thats cool, but i was promised hundreds of branching options and there just wasnt, same story every time and idk why that guy asks what you are scared of because that didnt matter
Well im just glad i didnt buy the game, it took me longer to realise no mans sky was rubbish then it did for me to hate until dawn, it wasnt what i expexted
"I didn't much enjoy the second playthrough" counts as a glowing review by Yahtzee standards right? Also "Now who will tongue my foetid box?" Pure poetry.
Yeah, choice in games is usually an illusion. Telltale does a really good job of making them feel important until you work out their two main rules: 1. Whatever you pick, the outcome will eventually be almost identical. 2. Anyone who can die at one point will definitely die at some other point. ...then it kind of loses its edge.
That moment where you're silently nodding, affirming to yourself that you agree with Yahtzee, and someone walks in, sees you apparently rocking out to something, then gives your earbuds a listen and calls you crazy for seemingly hearing nonexistent music.
Oh but the choice between killing Mr. Crazy or Ms. Nerdy Girl IS a branch. While it will always default to killing Mr. Crazy in the scene itsself, the decision to kill Ms. Nerdy Girl instead results in her hating you enough that she won't open the door for you in a later scene and rather watch on as you get consumed by monsters. Not every decisions needs to have immediate consequences for it to be a branching story. Sometimes you have to walk down the branch a bit before you realize that the one you chose is different from the other ;)
Minus the random cat fight that ensues in the beginning and add some follow through on all the sexual innuendos, and this is totally at least 1 clique of friends I went to college with. And as usual, Yahtzee smacks things on the head with the roomba comment.
Until Dawn has a lot of apologists, but come on, it's like a badly written Choose Your Own Adventure novel except it has fewer choices. On a basic level, the story logic falls apart, and the characters are paper thin. Remember when the Asian girl was asked to identify herself on the radio and she just says her first name even though she's supposed to be the smart one? She can't use her last name because the developers never bothered to give her one. (Also, the only Asian character is "intelligent" and the only black character is "athletic." Way to go, Until Dawn.) My problem with these video games that really want to be "cinematic" and "interactive movies!!" is that they just wind up reminding you that movies are so much better than video games right now. Yeah, the graphics are catching up, but a video game will never been a "fully cinematic experience" because games and movies are different mediums. Trying to improve a video game by making it more like a movie is like trying to improve a movie by making it more like a novel. Both novels and movies are fun, but they're different mediums and work by different mechanism, and therefore making a movie more like a book is only going to make it worse. In the end, video games are GAMES. They're mostly interactive. The player decides what to do. And movies are mostly visual; they're all about things looking pretty, which means that the creator has to have control over the visuals, which means that the game can't let the player control the camera and the character. If you make a video game "more cinematic," what you're doing is taking control away from the player and giving it to the game, and that is the opposite of what making a good game is about.
Wrath's Attack The *game* said she was intelligent. She was introduced as "intelligent, resourceful, and convincing." She says she has a 4.0 GPA and she's on the honor roll. I know she acts like a moron, but she's SUPPOSED to be smart. In the same way, Matt is described as "athletic", but he can't climb a ladder and hold an ax at the same time. *I* didn't write the game, I just report the facts.
+Rebecca Johnson I've been watching playthroughs of Life is Strange, which seems to be mostly an interactive story. The decisions seem significant, though, and the writing is (low bar here) better. I'm curious if you've tried that game, and if so, if you feel it has the same problems as Until Dawn? I thought it was a good example of the interactive story genre.
+Mike Kozar Just gonna pretend you didn't say Life is Strange has a better story than Until Dawn. UD's is by no means great, but LiS...oh God, don't even get me started on that hot mess.
+Usoland, Descendant of Noland and Destroyer of Sugar Since we all just watched a video about how UD's writing was completely unoriginal and formulaic, and LiS is objectively neither of those, you're going to have to work pretty hard to convince me that what you just said isn't completely ignorant.
Fun fact about the names of the cast in Until Dawn. The names of the characters, Mike, Josh, Chris, Matt, Jessica, Sam, Ashley, and Emily.... they were the most popular names in the year 1994. Probably the year all the characters were born. This game was purposefully so tropy and unoriginal and I fucking love it.
I think that the main problems with Until Dawn are thus: a. The story seemed much more interesting roughly 2/3 of the way through, when the player thinks that there are upwards of 4 different antagonists, than it does in the final stretch, in which you know all about the actual antagonists, and the mystery and complexity are lost. b. There are not, despite what the game implies, multiple endings based on your choices. There is one ending, with zero to eight survivors. Technically speaking, an ending with three survivors is a "different ending" than one with four, but I think that everybody who played the game was expecting more significant changes. Perhaps the killer turning out to be a completely different character in one playthrough, or something interesting like that.
This is a video game for one, but the point of my comment was laughing at the comment Yahtzee made. Neither his nor my comment had to do with equality.
All I really want is one of this games to REALLY create a branching story. As in, if you do different things, the beginning, middle, and ends are completely different. Still, this game is currently the closest we'll get to it for now. Also, the characters weren't as unlikable as yahtzee portrayed, although I shall admit I took a certain glee in blowing Emily's brains out.
+Richard Gauthier Undertale is a bit like that. Not to spoil too much, it's an rpg where you fight monsters, like most RPGs. Except you can win every battle completely peacefully and spare every enemy from death, and the story(which is really damn GOOD) changes dramatically depending on whether you spared people or killed them. I think it's currently one of the highest-rated PC games.
+Richard Gauthier Gotta agree with Laugh on this one; if you dont mind a game being stylized like an nes/snes game graphically, or are okay with bullet hell style combat Undertale has something akin to the branching choices and lovable characters you sound like you're after. I'd say it's worth the $10 but that's up to you on this.
spot on as always mate! I really enjoyed my first play through but after replaying i soon discovered most choices only every amount to a different bit of dialogue, only reason to push through is to see different endings but i admit i haven't had the burning desire to do that.
I know this is unrelated to this game, but..I thought *Rob Zombie's **_Halloween_* was better than the original. I wish modern slashers would be as good as that movie. Every NEW version of "Friday the 13th" or "Nightmare on Elm Street" is just recycling the same ol' formula instead of trying something new (like Rob Zombie's movie did).
+Paradox Acres Check out TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL - it's a really good slasher comedy, it turns all the tropes on their heads and although you see some of the deaths coming a mile off it doesn't hurt the over all quality or entertainment value of the movie.
***** Yeah, I know. Loved that movie! :) (Oh, and _Cabin in The Woods_ was also a great horror comedy movie if you're into the whole "turning tropes on their heads" kind of thing)
***** Disagree. I felt that understanding where Michael Myers came from (his "origins", basically) made him a lot more scarier. The "perfect storm" as they say. The original's _fine_, but..it's been done to death. It's been the same ol' b.s. for the past 30 years and Rob Zombie's _Halloween_ was like a breath of fresh air. Now, lets wait for the next Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street "remakes" that basically do the same damn thing the originals did all those decades ago....
That "which three things are you most scared of" bit reminds me of Paper Mario. Bowser pulls the same shit on Peach/Mario at one point, and they give you the option to pick like healing items and stuff
Man, the one thing I'm surprised Yahtzee didn't harp on is that not only could all the characters be summed up in a few words, the game took the liberty of LITERALLY SHOWING YOU those few words floating around their head in a cutscene - Which really shows no faith in the writing at best and is completely patronizing to the audience at worst.
It's not so much that he hates every game its that his brand of humor thrives on pointing out the negative aspects and magnifying them. Pretty much everyone can enjoy seeing someone shit all over a game like Until Dawn. I love the game and I found Zeros review to be funny and absolutely true.
Whoa whoa whoa, that death trap one is a pivotal moment, because if you choose the person that will automatically survive to rather then the other person, in turn you will get killed. But if you choose to "save" them you get some
By the way, my favorite Until Dawn branching narrative bit is this: if Matt agrees to go find a radio tower with Emily, he will later shoot a flare gun. And if he disagrees, he won't waste the ammo. You go to the radio tower regardless. My second favorite I'm not 100% on, but I think Sam has to find a diary in order for Josh to recognize his own sister for some reason.
The choices actually did matter. At one point, if you make a character hate you, they refuse to do certain things for you. To the point of getting a character killed. Though what was revealed was that it's a bit harder to kill the characters than the game makes you feel. But that's more of a second playthrough observation. While you're playing, you still feel the tension of that potential danger. And the characters were supposed to be archetypal. The plot was "All over the place" as far as supernatural stuff, then not. Then there were again, because it designed as such. A red herring while there was actual crazy shit happening. Loved the game. A full playthrough is warranted because of the way it's designed. Some choices don't bare fruit until later. The plot looks a mess until it's revealed because it's SUPPOSED to, to hint at what's really going on. 5 different threads come together beautifully by the end and enough clues are laid around (Literally) for you to figure it out just a bit sooner.
I'm pretty sure the character stats/relationships were meant to imply how the best way to play each character. For instance, while you could do whatever you liked, if you played each character's strengths, then you had a better chance of saving every character from danger, and thus getting more of the plot.
You were kinder to this than I expected :D Especially with how aggressively terrible all the characters are XD but yeah. Thats the point. But that doesn't stop them being terrible.
I wonder who’s decision it was to edit some of the jokes in the yearly compilation videos. They took out the black character joke. He’s an equal opportunity reviewer and makes fun of everyone.
@@JimRFF ooh! another one such as i! Can you link the video that you described please? it sounds hilarious :D
@@thepurplepanda4 th-cam.com/video/Yy44s_de15Y/w-d-xo.html dude's laughter is arguably the best part, I love everything about it
@@JimRFF I would also recommend Call Me Kevin's series on the game, he does that for the entire thing but his personality is funny enough to make it work
@Jason Fenton: It'd be amazing if, by doing badly enough, you could get into an extremely long fall down a hill like in Hot Rod but full of QTEs that don't work.
Based on what I've heard, Yahtzee isn't that bad of a person for wanting to kill everyone in this game, normal people want them dead too.
+Eugenideddis so long as you don't confuse yahtzee with a normal person, youre doing it right!
+Eugenideddis I've seen a let's play of it and while there are only the odd one or two characters i would actively want dead i find there are none that i would actually want to survive either.
+VextonHersteller From what I've heard, she is also the one with the biggest number of ways that she can die.
For some reason, I found that ending hilarious. "It's not exactly what I would call a branching story; it's more like a... log."
+Paul B It's the sudden dramatic change from Yahtzee's usual quick spouted complaining to an akward slow paced analogy.
+Albert Torres
Congratulations! You just killed the joke.
Well he wondered why it was funny so I explained why that might have been, not much of an issue complaining people will see the joke and enjoy it before they ever even read this.
The second a joke is explained is the second it gets murdered.
+JellybellyWaffles Well, how fitting a place for murder.
No. The suits pay someone else (also known as marketers) to do it for them.
Granted but it's hilarious later on to try and kill Ashley a second time and fail.
Ehhh... not exactly.
Until Dawn is a better game than David Cage could ever DREAM to make
Nevertheless it must be clumped with his shite since it's basically what he does but only much much much better, for a variety of reasons.
but Telltale tho
+DoctaDaKing Oh, you!
+DoctaDaKing HEEYOOOO!
+DoctaDaKing *daivid Kaije
I love the fact that Yahtzee put Nathan Drakes face on one of the cast since Mike is literaly Nathan Drake
4:09 Never seen that face of Yahtzee before.
+Swordking090 It used to be his implied face. Maybe his viewership expanded to include newbies or dumber people
sdmitch16 Well, that's good to know. I honestly don't recall that particular expression. Although, it would be hard to remember every detail from all of his videos.
+Swordking090 I was mostly kidding with my comment. I will say Yahtzee's hatred used to come off as more real and was more constant.
sdmitch16 Well, he is still good at what he does. He is what keeps me coming back to watch more.
+Swordking090 Same here. I was just trying to explain why he'd introduce a new face.
I absolutely fell in love with this game during the first play through
I knew I wasn't the only one who thought Mike looked like Nathan Drake
I thought Mike looked AND sounded a lot like Grant Ward from Agents of SHIELD, probably because they share the same actor, Brett Dalton.
PS: I hope I don't cause one of "Ward's Warriors" to come and shout their battle cry!
+Girolamo Esposito two best friends pointed it out too
+Girolamo Esposito And Sam looks like Elena
+Girolamo Esposito There's actually a fan campaign for Brett Dalton to star as him!
***** Huh, can't say I didn't see that coming.
Yes, I enjoyed the story of Until Dawn and the plot may be somewhat all over the place but it's still fun and the whole experience was rather tense and enjoyable and some of the characters actually had arcs (a bit)
I'd recommend Until Dawn overall but I'd say wait for the price to drop before you buy it since it's not currently worth it's asking price if you are only going to play it once which I'd highly recommend to avoid seeing all the bullshit trickery that's been jammed into the cake on the second playthrough.
Damn well said
was I the only one that felt like the game was really trying to make you kill the black guy. lol.
+morraynumbah52
It's, way, *way* too easy to get him killed compared to the other characters.
Except for Ashley, maybe, with the trap-door part.
+morraynumbah52
well, it's supposed to be a cliche horror movie.
black guy always gets killed first.
+morraynumbah52 Who was the Black Guy!?!
Tickles McGee
Matt.
+morraynumbah52 IF you do things wrong, Matt is the first person to die, oh the irony.
But the actor who played the doctor was really freaking good, you gotta admit.
+Chase H Cause it's Peter fucking Stromare! You know, the bizarro world Swedish Chris Walken.
+OgreSamanosuke Those little breaks in the doctor's office were far creepier and more disturbing than anything the game tries to throw at you. I started lying to the game because I made the mistake of being honest and got hordes of clowns and needles - it was really horrible.
+Chase H Peter Stormare? He's fucking amazing.
+GoAway LeaveMeAlone
I thought he was a bit funny and felt like a TH-cam commenter.
+Chase H I felt like the amount of faces he was making was a bit over acting. Abusing the face capture tech.

I love the idea of Yahtzee restarting the chapter with the saw-esque trap to try and get different outcomes 4 times - "Damn you buttons, why won't you work?!"

Okay in fairness, you CAN have some of them say how strange and inappropriate this feels and some of them imply they are only really doing it in service to the one doing the inviting.
Awesome game, it has its flaws but i still enjoy it immensely. I wouldn't really call it a game tho, more of an interactive story.
+Brekner Catalin that is what it is an interactive story. I enjoyed it too thanks to my friends ps4.
+Brekner Catalin Arent all games with a storyline interactive stories?
+Brekner Catalin that's pretty much what makes it a game, you actually make decisions and interact with shit
+Brekner Catalin The interactive part is what makes it a game. Unlike Dear Esther which had you *accompany* the story.
+Brekner Catalin being interactive is why it's a game, if it isnt then it would be a movie you moron.
It's more like a...log
And let's not forget MILDLY ASIAN.
No, she's just that one person who everyone wants to die
+David Grohl or Dave Grohl for that matter
because token minority couples are a thing.
+David Grohl no, she definitely falls under the category "BITCH".
Eurrikke Edward SHE LITERALLY BADMOUTHS THE GUY SHES DATING WHILE SHES DANGLING OFF A TOWER
I DONT LIKE HER TBH
I was literally just wondering when Yahtzee would release a Zero Punctuation on Until Dawn and I get a phone notification that Yahtzee released a Zero Punctuation on Until Dawn. Thank you oh great Yahtzee, I always knew you listened.
+Mohammed Al-Kooheji This came out a week ago, just so you know.
+nintendogamecube64 A week? Really?
Mackenzie Roberts Yes. They get posted a week early on the escapist website, though not this week since Yahtzee has been away for the last few weeks and hasn't made a new one yet.
+nintendogamecube64 Oh sorry, I thought you meant the game, not review. My mistake, I knew about reviews being one week early on the website.
It's always at 5, if you've noticed
1:24 Who else mentally spelled out the names to make sure they were all five letters?
+Mitch L (Mitten) i did
everyone
The slightly faster walking when there's a person screaming bloody murder nearby drives me crazy in video games. Like who pitched that idea at the "Lets make this game realistic" meeting?
With all those quick time events I kind of expected Jason to make an appearance in this game, you know something like :"Jason! Jason! Jasoooooo-" *slash*
+Girolamo Esposito Is this a heavy rain reference?
Yup
+Girolamo Esposito at first I thought it was farcry lol
Girolamo Esposito *Press X to Jason*
*What "Until Dawn" Says*: "Every choice has a consequence, and you can save all the characters if you pick the right ones."
*What "Until Dawn" Meant*: "Every choice has a quicktime event, and you *can't* save the characters unless you pass them.... oh, the choices?
+Rebecca Johnson Well, she is the cliche "bitch" of slasher movies. But since slasher films are messed up to begin with, then yes.
The choice about whether to save Ashley or Josh might not have an immediate effect, but if you choose to save Josh over Ashley, Ashley leaves Chris to die outside the cabin where he's torn apart by Wendigos
There's much more branching path and choices than a Telltale game, for example.
the ash v josh choice doesnt actually matter for shit. ashley and chris' relationship status goes up if you pick her but it has no impact on gameplay. it's the ash v chris choice that actually matters; if you "shoot" her she wont open the door....even though she literally begs chris to "let me choose to save you" in the trap.........video games! (yes i know this comment is 6 years old and about an extremely mediocre game but i am a Fucking loser!)
That's not a high bar.
I'm just sat here waiting to see if they'll cover SOMA yet...
+Robin Powell The plot is kinda interesting
The underwater sections are a little confusing but mostly boring and lame.
It's a little like bioshock horror edition.
Except all the enemies are shit and I don't even think you can die. I got hit about 4 times without healing because I was just sprinting past them and it didn't seem to have any effect on gameplay.
+Cally Thank you, Yahtzee Jr.
+Py Saiko No problem madame! *Tips a giant tower of hats, fails to react as the majority of them collapse to the floor.*
One of the enemies is just a dude with an orb on his head who teleports and makes your screen distorted. He's like Slender, but in basically no way creepy.
+Cally PEOPLE THAT CALL THE SLENDERMAN "SLENDER"
+Lex Winters Or Malnutrition.
it was always a sad moment for me every time the antagonist of a slasher movie dies.

@@muskatDR Slasher villains are like the Black Knight from Monty Python & The Holy Grail, or the one man in the witch village from that same movie

The man from the witch village: SHE TURNED ME INTO A NEWT! (A newt?) ......I got better.
When someone first told be about how Until Dawn took player choice into effect, I cheekily replied "Is that a BioWare game? No? You sure? It sounds like a BioWare game."
+Jerry Peet Now I'm imagining Until Dawn with Mass Effect dialogue choices and Paragon/Renegade interrupt moments.
Bioware games take player choice into effect now? When did that start?
Jason Smith Way back in 2000 when Baldur's Gate was released. Unless you're still salty about Mass Effect.
+Jerry Peet It pleases me greatly that you watch ZeroPunctuation as well, amazing taste in content creators you have here. XD
Lily Peet heyyy gurl
IIRC that one scene where character A choose between whether character B or character C dies has a consequence on the story, but it doesn't actually pay off until much later on. If C is the person who's supposed to die, and you chose B to die, B will now hate A's guts. Much later on in the story A needs to rely on B to get to safety from a nearby threat. If B is still angry at A, B will do nothing and let A die.
2:17 The Paper Mario series did something like that. Needless to say, I was afraid of the Ultra Shroom, the Jammin' Jelly, and the Thunder Rage.
The way this just....awkwardly ends....Is equal parts hilarious and inexplicably adorable.
+Valdetiosi So you're saying you want more games to be on the platform of DVD players? A bit niche but I'm sure some indie dev could help you out
Takeshi Kovaks
No. I said I wanted these "interactive" movies on DVDs. Because why not? There's literally nothing else seemed to need other than DVD controller for this kind of games.
But you a still want them to be interactive and controllable. So all you are doing is moving the game from whatever console you're playing it on to DVD
Takeshi Kovaks
No, I don't. I don't even like this game. I just wanted to hear my Cynical Brit talking about it.
I would love to see an entire LP for this done by Yahtzee. It would be amusing to see how he kills off the characters or saves them
"Less of a branching story, more of a log" has got to be the most clever thing I've heard all week.
Oh my god, that part with Clippy had me laughing so hard
how long did you play
Until Dawn?
Adam Jensen in the words of Adam Jensen
"I didn't ask for this"
One complete playthrough, and a hour or two of a second playthrough.
+Adrian .C Until dawn.
*Oh my god*. That pun at the end _killed_ me. I am absolutely amazed.
There was punctuation right before the "log" I heard it, you heard it, we all heard it, I demand my money back!
Here`s your zero dollars for your zero punctuation.
"The only downside I see in LiS is Ashly Burch being Chloe, making an already annoying character worse."
There's a character in Life Is Strange who isn't annoying - I must have lost consciousness, when they introduced a new character who died immediately. This would be the only way to not be an annoying character in LiS..
Sounds like he liked it.
Failing the qte with the guy screaming for Jessica is peak comedy in what is supposed to be a tense scene
+Andrew Ryan You have to pay a lot of attention to the story to get the Wendigo arc, but its meant to be a cliche game at first
Ben Dickie What I meant was that It gave the impression of being tacked on, it all seemed rather pointless. It would be like if the second half of Citizen Kane was about battling space pirates.
Andrew Ryan Well its not like you didn't expect supernatural themes after that predator vision
"And let's not forget Black" help, I can't breathe xD
I first read the Extra Punctuation expanding on this video like seven years ago and I still think about it sometimes.
next up, Soma from the creators of Amnesia, how can Yahtzee not do it
Oh, that is subtle. The Splitting the Universe bit has Yahtzee with the eyepatch and scar of....The Brig, in "Inferno."
The graphic for this game are some of the best things I've ever seen in this world.
Not really
+Yan Toha shame it's game play can't match
+liverpool It's outstanding compared to most console games.
+shippouma121 its an interactive game what did u think
+Yan Toha Those tits.
Things would've really gone South there if you weren't around to mash x like crazy" Honestly, whenever I play any game now and my character gets hurt in a cutscene, all I can think is "You're lucky there was no qte, or you would've been sorry."
everyone keeps defending this game "oh it's supposed to be cliche, that's the point", and I just laugh at them.
I bet you don't even talk to people
+Wesley Tomsky the campy horror genre is hilariously good and bad at the same time. evil dead, dead alive, trailer park of terror, etc no one is saying those movies are technically 'good' (direction, cinematography, special effects, and so on) but they have a unique charm to them that makes them extremely entertaining.
Steve Dyssal Ashley isn't a "psychopath" she is just really cowardly, bravery is one of her least traits. But like you said, it's still interesting.
Oh my god his voice plus the animation is perfectly hilarious.
There is a run button.
Really? Which button is that?
Are you sure you're playing until dawn then?
Walking faster and running are two different things.
its good for one play through, if you replay it you'll discover that your choices don't matter, nothing really changes
Casper Fall yes i noticed that one spider crawl across the camera i was terrified (extreme sarcasm alert)
Telltale does a really good job of making them feel important until you work out their two main rules:
Sometimes you have to walk down the branch a bit before you realize that the one you chose is different from the other ;)
Sam and Dean could have rapped this mystery up in an hour :P
"Crickey O'Blimey" made me cry with laughter xD
I can't believe no one has made fanart of Yahtzee as a anime girl.I need that.
No. Bad weaboo. Bad.
Yahtzee himself has done that exact thing multiple times. And at least once he’s been “the prettiest princess.” c-:
Minus the random cat fight that ensues in the beginning and add some follow through on all the sexual innuendos, and this is totally at least 1 clique of friends I went to college with. And as usual, Yahtzee smacks things on the head with the roomba comment.
He said VCR. Kids don't know what that is.
I'm 15 and I know what that is.
+Courtney Valdez Why everyone that born in the 90's think that every kids are idiots? That's so stupid, video cassettes are not even that old.
+Jose Marques I totally agree. Even some schools still use VCRs when they want to show older videos and movies.
Jose Marques Born in the mid-80s. The point being, VCRs are a rather outdated reference, like 8-tracks.
+Courtney Valdez i got a kick out of "do you press play and record at the same time?"
Is there no new video on the escapist website this week because the website and TH-cam channel are going to be matched in releases?
Until Dawn has a lot of apologists, but come on, it's like a badly written Choose Your Own Adventure novel except it has fewer choices. On a basic level, the story logic falls apart, and the characters are paper thin. Remember when the Asian girl was asked to identify herself on the radio and she just says her first name even though she's supposed to be the smart one? She can't use her last name because the developers never bothered to give her one. (Also, the only Asian character is "intelligent" and the only black character is "athletic." Way to go, Until Dawn.)
My problem with these video games that really want to be "cinematic" and "interactive movies!!" is that they just wind up reminding you that movies are so much better than video games right now.
Mike Kozar I've never played it and I've stayed away from playthroughs because I'd like to. It does sound intriguing!
The cast is supposed to fill the stereotypes...I thought people would be sharper to this
+L1nKo64 "No, see, it's supposed to be completely unoriginal!" Gee, why doesn't Hollywood use this excuse more often?
+L1nKo64 "Jokes on them I was only pretending to be retarded"
"Schrodinger's Dipshit" is my new highlight of the moment
Dat log tho.
Out of all the reviews made by Yahtzee, the face at 4:09 made me laugh extremely hard for no apparent reason
"Out of work 20-something actors."
Didn't one of them go on to win an Oscar?
so what? it's not like oscars are a validation of talent or quality.
@@tommerker8063 i know. But its still not exactly out of work.
@@williamcharron4683 fair enough
I think that the main problems with Until Dawn are thus:
Black is a personality? kek
+Woodman Kaelan To show equality in films, the director always puts in the token black guy.
+Demon Rantz I think it's less for equality and more to have them die first.
This is a video game for one, but the point of my comment was laughing at the comment Yahtzee made. Neither his nor my comment had to do with equality.
Isaac Argesmith True but I think a law was made to have at least one black person in your movie but white directors always kill them off.
+Woodman Kaelan In your typical horror/slasher movie it is.
the next episode isnt on the website...
+Richard Gauthier
Gotta agree with Laugh on this one; if you dont mind a game being stylized like an nes/snes game graphically, or are okay with bullet hell style combat Undertale has something akin to the branching choices and lovable characters you sound like you're after. I'd say it's worth the $10 but that's up to you on this.
Witcher 2. Truly a mind-blowing experience at the time.
spot on as always mate!
I really enjoyed my first play through but after replaying i soon discovered most choices only every amount to a different bit of dialogue, only reason to push through is to see different endings but i admit i haven't had the burning desire to do that.
Zero Punctuation on The Beginner's Guide?
"And let's not forget, black." My favorite fucking part.
+Paradox Acres The acting was corny as fuck, but as a slasher flick, it was decent.
(Oh, and _Cabin in The Woods_ was also a great horror comedy movie if you're into the whole "turning tropes on their heads" kind of thing)
***** Really? Huh. I thought he was pretty good in it. Not "hammy" at all.
That "which three things are you most scared of" bit reminds me of Paper Mario. Bowser pulls the same shit on Peach/Mario at one point, and they give you the option to pick like healing items and stuff
Finally
This has been out since last week.
+possessedmofo No shit Sherlock. Too bad Escapist's video player is garbage, and most people have to wait for the videos to come out here.
Is that really the case? Does it not play in some regions? Cause for a WHILE now, I've watched ZP with no problems other there phone and PC.
+Kurt Adams Fair enough
possessedmofo Oh, I didn't know that. I never check their site
i love how the character you called "black" is the jazz singer... That made me giggle.
Quicktime = Cancertime.
I feel like this guy hates every game
It's not so much that he hates every game its that his brand of humor thrives on pointing out the negative aspects and magnifying them. Pretty much everyone can enjoy seeing someone shit all over a game like Until Dawn. I love the game and I found Zeros review to be funny and absolutely true.
+Wirt TrapezoidStone He's got to. How else is he suppose to support his son going through college.
I see everyone complaining about the qt events. The game was recommended to me as a playable movie. So they made sense to me.
"It's more like a log."
That is the most accurate thing I've ever heard about these "DAiivID CAiiGe" "Branching Narrative" games.
I'm pretty sure the character stats/relationships were meant to imply how the best way to play each character. For instance, while you could do whatever you liked, if you played each character's strengths, then you had a better chance of saving every character from danger, and thus getting more of the plot.
The bit with the saw where you chose who dies does actually have a major effect, if you choose Ashlee the later I. The game she kills Chris
"The party must have been fucking legendary" funniest thing yahtzee ever said
You were kinder to this than I expected :D
Especially with how aggressively terrible all the characters are XD but yeah. Thats the point. But that doesn't stop them being terrible.
Honestly, at 4:37 I couldn't tell whether that frame was just a simple design choice or a reference to Yahtzee's past.
I wonder who’s decision it was to edit some of the jokes in the yearly compilation videos. They took out the black character joke. He’s an equal opportunity reviewer and makes fun of everyone.
"Dayvid Cayge's gaymes" I'm twitching from laughter here like a moron.
"And let's not forget 'black'." That line destroyed me. Lol
Until Dawn may not be great but compared to Man of Medan it's a god damn masterpiece
"more like a wooden spear being jammed up..." You get the idea 4:57
