"I was bored" part makes so much sense and gives so much depth to light's character
He is a genius, a genius forced to do mundane things every day. everything is already too easy for him and nothing challenges him.
The main reason I think L wouldn't have became kira if he had gotten death note instead of Light is only this reason that L already had difficult cases as challenges to keep him busy but Light was a bored teenager
I also think that the delivery of the performance makes a difference. In the Japanese dub when Light says that he’s bored in that scene, it comes off as very cold, almost sociopathic, as if he’s really got nothing better to do
Light helped his father out on cases. If he truly was bored, he could have skipped the last grade of high school and gone to a university. Light made himself bored by not pushing himself to do more, instead spending his time in silent resentment of the world state, likely only helping his father as a way to lash out at criminals rather than actually try to make the world a better place.
L was likely brought up in an environment that cultivated and encouraged his detective skills. Cases clearly aren't that challenging since he has time to not only be himself, but the second and third best detectives in the world. It's too easy. He just has his own moral code that wouldn't ever use the Death Note as childishly and mercilessly as Light did.
"After writting the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds". This is going to start making sense after a few chapters. They will start explaining the kinds of details you could add to the death if you were to write a cause of death. If I tell you now it will be kind of like a spoiler.

In the Japanese version of "I am justice!" L says "私は" now 私 is a polite way of saying "I" and は marks the "topic" meanwhile Kira says "僕が" 僕 is a casual way of saying "I" and が marks the subject however when used in this context it's used to put focus on the subject basically Kira is being quite narcissistic while L is being calm.

@@Animaster151 Yeah same also I'm gonna use this opportunity to talk about how I hate Romaji to start Romaji doesn't account for allophony for example the word for Japanese is 日本語 it would be romanized as "Nihongo" but it's actually pronounced more like "Nyihonggo" with the uvular nasal /ɴ/ turning into a velar nasal /ŋ/ (Which is written in English as "ng") because the next sound /g/ is also velar this is not even talking about how じ and it's variations are pronounced as zh /ʑ/ except when it's at the start of words after a nasal sound or when it's long then it's /d͡ʑ/ (Kinda like the J in joke) I could go on and on about how う isn't u or how ひ isn't hi or how ふ isn't fu and how たちつてと are slightly different from the English T but I think anyone interested enough in this to get to this point will know about these already.
There are a few cases like this where the sub is much better, but this is still the best dub of all time.
And just to make it a bit clearer:
Light is saying: _I_ am justice. I = Justice. There is no justice without I. Everything I do is justice, and justice exists only because of me.
L is saying: I am _justice._ I represent justice. What I am doing right now is justice.

I think Light's boredom stems from a sense of meaninglessness, unjust, uninspiring, and unchanging world. Through the deathnote he may have found new meaning.

The 6 minute and 40 second rule is there if the writer wants to add more details about the the death, if you want someone to choke on cake you don't need to describe how but you could if you wanted to

I know I'm late, but I really would like to explain the 6 minutes and 40 seconds thing.
Let's follow your example: death by cake
1) The person with the notebook will write the name of the person affected "John Doe", this will unlock 40 seconds for them to write how they die, otherwise it will just be a heart attack.
2) The person with the notebook adds "dies choking by cake" within those 40 seconds, so now they've unlocked other 6 minutes with 40 seconds to add details, or the person will just somehow randomly die eating cake.
3) The person with the notebook adds "John walks into the bakery outside his job, gets a cake, walks back home, gets a fork, and then goes to the park where he'll seat, eat his cake, and choke at the 3rd bite" and that's how the guy will die as long as the person writing, wrote it whithin those 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
So if he wants an specific way to die of however death he picks for the person, this is how he can do it. You know you can say "death by falling off a cliff" but there are different ways that could happen: someone could throw them off, they could slid, they could get accidentally pushed, etc. He can just leave it there and it will happen somehow, but if he wants a certain way, he has 6 minutes and 40 seconds to write it down.
Writing the death note would go like this:
John Doe Choked on cake (within 40 seconds) While recording a YT video and eating cake, laughed at a joke he read and sucked a bite of cake down his windpipe. (within 6 minutes and 40 seconds)

The 6 mins and 40 sec rule will be clearer in later episodes.
But to give you a brief explanation - suppose the cause of death is drowning (no spoilers so don't worry)
Details of the cause of death - time of death, by water or some other liquid, where (river/pond/sea) etc.... All these can be added and basically you can "customise" the death.
Note that light has literally been killing everyone with a simple heart attack (as pointed out in the ICPO conference) despite the fact that he can customise these deaths. Because in ep 1 he said that he wants everyone to "know" of a pattern and in turn his existence.
Also, the reason why light says he's bored is because he is one of those teenagers who are overachievers no matter what they do so nothing is a challenge to him, be it school or extra-curriculars. And this is a "new and exciting" challenge for a supposedly mentally disturbed and lonely teenager who is faking his life as the perfect honour student. Basically he's just too smart for school and society. But societal system doesn't have any good use for him and he finds it mundane. Example of this are hackers.
Notice how light got irked the moment L called him "evil". This is where we learn that we all are only humans at the end of the day and fall prey to some weakness/insecurity or the other. Light desperately wants to be perceived as a "god". And it only took another human to find him. So now he has good challenge to win. Hence he is not bored anymore.
And now that you have met L, welcome to one of thee biggest debate in anime community: Are you team Kira or are you team L ?

Yeah, I was bothered by the 'bored' this as well. However I think it's quite common for incredibly intelligent psychopaths to be bored. Especially if everything is easy and everyone around them feels stupid, something like a death note - that feeds grandiose/narcissistic view of self, is confusing and needs to be figured out, gives them power over others - is a perfect cure for boredom

40 seconds - 6 minutes 40 seconds (total 400 seconds). 4 is supposed to be a cursed number in Chinese (4 is pronounced shi like die in Chinese). I wonder if it's the same for Japanese.

Bordem is really the bond between ryuk and light. In this episode you see how ryuk lights up the same way light lights up when their bordem is fading away. Smart/Rich people biggest enemy is bordem there is a lot of studies on this too. Also highlights how childish light us and where there thoughts of becoming a God come from.
I love L, but I have to admit the L/W jokes were kinda funny.

Well about the "bored" thing...
In japanese you say the same word -taikutsu- on bored and done
so Rryuk was bored 'cause he has nothing to do, and Light was done with this rotten word.
And on the time after you write a name in the deathnote. There is an example:
name: Michael -> then you got 40 secs to write the cause of dead or poor Michael is gonna die on a heart attack into 1 min.
cause of dead: choke on cake -> then you got 6 min 40 secs to write specifications or it is gonna happen inmediately after the time ends.
details of dead: this night, at 9 pm, alone in his house Michael will be eating a cake with his coffe and is gonna choke on cake. He will try to call for help, but being unable to speak, he will desperate, fall from his chairr, knock his head and lose conciusness. Then he will die. -> so, you can setup an hour, place and more to not be sus if someone is watching you in the moment you are writing.

I'm pretty sure when Light said he was bored, it's not the same as Ryuk. Ryuk is basically immortal stuck in the afterlife, and messing with mortals is how he gets his kicks. Light, on the other hand, is bored by what he sees as a stagnant world, and wants to be the one to break the status quo. Mix things up and make it interesting.
At least that's how I see it.
BEST EPISODE
The “I’m bored” part is simply perfect to show how much of a psychopath Light is. He’s basically saying that his life is more interesting now that he can kill people indiscriminately, compared to his old regular high school life where he always looked rather absent in class and still was a top student.
It’s crazy to think that the Death Note, a mass murder tool, gave him motivation to live his life to the fullest.
So, couple things. The Shinigami (god of death) is named Ryuk. He's said it a couple of times but you may have missed it. Also the bored thing does make sense because of Light's intellect and disdain for the world. One flaw about Death Note in my opinion is that they don't let you see Light pre Death Note at all, but he is very much bored with the state of the world. He's also just sickened by the state of it and how it makes so little sense.
You do realize there's real people in the real world who committed crime just because their were bored, right?
P/s: The shinigami's name is Ryuk. Shinigami in japanese language mean God of Death/Reaper.
When you write a person's name in the death note that person will die of a heart attack. If you want to specify the death or change the cause of death like accident you can do that in the next 6 minutes. If you don't specify and just write the name of the person he will die by a heart attack.

The 'rule' of: After writting the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds
- basically means that you have 40 seconds initially after writing someones name to specify the cause of death, your example given at 10:20 choked on cake, only written in those first initial 40 seconds means that the person would simply die of that.
-but then you could add details if you want for example: choked on cake while going to disneyland on 02.06.22 and once they got on the teacup ride they were too dizzy to properly swallow and inevedebly choked on a bite of vanilla cake.
->this detail writing isn't required as you could also simply state that instead of a heartattack you want that person dead in an accident, just like it was shown in the first episode when Light tested the notebook! so basically write just a name with their face in mind results in a death by heartattack, you have 40 seconds after writing the name to specify the cause of death (which is why he waited a minute after he tested the notebook for the first time on that news incident in the first episode), and if you want to be real fancy you can go ahead and write specifics for that persons death for the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

This is stupid but after knowing death note for a while only now did I understand that people named him "Kira" because it sounds like how japanese would say "Killer".
I'm pretty sure Light meant that he was bored of the state his world is in, similar to Mr death man, though tired probably would've been a better word

Something I noticed: I think you’re so used to watching AOT where there are a million hints and chess moves happening at all times that it has you overthinking some parts of death note LMAO. This anime has its mysteries yeah, but it’ll just tell you the majority of what you need to know straight up 😅 Its definitely not as complicated as AOT

I believe what light meant by saying he was "bored" is that he was bored of the current state of the world, that there are a lot of criminals and bad people and that the world would be better off without them. And he wants to be the one to change the current state of the world.
I liked that he at least showed Light's political corrrectness speech (because even if most people don't want to admit it, he speaks FACTS), considering most reactors straight up REMOVE the scene from the reaction. I didn't knew about the futbol players hehe...

I know it's a bit early into the anime but when you finish it, i highly suggest watching Evangelion. For me AoT, Death Note and Evangelion are the holy trinity of animes

The Death Note has a TON of rules, there's no way you'll be able to remember them all.
Also, I have a prop death note of my own, and all the rules in it are written in Japanese and then incredibly poorly translated into English. I'll give examples for your entertainment:
Rule # 1: "It was written on the name of the people will die in the notes."
On page 5 we have: "Become a death note holders of human, if the half of the rest of his life in exchange for, get to see a human appearance will know the name of the man of life death eye."

if you look up difficulties in life for highly intelligent people it is often stress due to boredom. This is why a huge chunk of high IQ students fail school. They tend to be so much further ahead than their peers, but school does little to acommodate for this.
Today there are a lot of programs who help gifted children reach their full potential, but I guess Light wasn't lucky enough to be acknowledged by them yet. Ergo; he was bored.

He is the smartest kid , he is good looking , good grades , popular among everyone ,boys want to be him and girls want him, perfect child , perfect family , perfect status and has everything that he wants. So in short , everything is too easy for him. And because of that he is bored.
Its psychological fact that people who are very smart (and mainly Psychopaths who lack even the pleasures driven of emotions) get easily bored and tend do risky and dangerous stuff if their intelligence is not being used at the right place. So for Light , this whole deathnote thing is like a game where his intelligence is challenged , a fun challenge to his intelligence.

That inmate was already on death sentence and he was supposed to be executed that day at that moment. He's going to die anyway.
