Towards the end, Meruem loses his eye sight, and Komugi touched Meruem's face so that she could "see" his face for the first time.
Really poetic.
And then he murders her.
Also meruem was never closer to Komugi when he was blind as well
One more thing, Mereum didn't live long. Only 40 days from what I can find online. He was born an insanely power supervillain, devastated a nation, fell in love, became a better man and died with his love holding him. All in 40 days.

Meruem is not evil. He's a animal following his instinct and evolutionary duties. But he's not completely robotic because he has a human side too
This is why netero keeps saying he has too choose between his human and ant side. But here comes the irony. We could interpret human vs ant as in good vs evil. But like netero said humans have bottomless malice in their heart. Humans are more evil then the ants
So in the end its not really black and white. Meruem didnt went from evil to good. He went from a ant to human. But that doesnt mean he went from evil to good.
I love the detail of Komugi calling Meruem without honorifics at the end because humans are all equal in death.
Trivia (from HxH wiki): The original version of Komugi's line "Though I may not be worthy, allow me to go wif you" (in manga Chapter 317 ) is an old-fashioned way for Japanese women to accept a marriage proposal.

When he started to say it was torture before Meruem even found Komugi I went "oh my dear child, the knife hasn't even pierced your skin and you already feel like they are twisting it"
Maybe not so fun fact, when ha asked if she is stil there Meruem had already gone blind, becoming like Komugi
Fun fact number 2, their match was pretty much a replay of the palace invasion just in gungi and Komugi found a way out

Could you elaborate on the second point because that's really interesting! Also, what did her "way out" move(I think it was the spy) symbolize? Does the spy in Gungi itself mean something, or is it saying more that Meruem did have options to avoid being "checkmated" by Netero in the end?

Man i respect you because you say RIP to Pouf, a lot of reactor have 0 empathy with the chamera ant espacially Pouf. But Pouf was as loyal as Pitou but in a different way. His death was so sad to me. He died alone without his teamates, with the sad music the wind and the feeling that it was the end of those character, i was like daaaaaaamn, i will missed them... 😢
Pouf protected the king, Pitou protected Meruem, Youpi protected the king existence.
Tbh all of their deaths were lonely and sad, but at least they went out for the King

Pouf says : his name should be king = he cares about the function as a king
Pitou says he should call himself whatever he wants = she cares about the will of the king
Youpi said he didnt care = he cares about the existence of the king
that's why pouf comes out antagonistic because he cares about the ant based fonction/position of the king
In the end even Pouf understood how much Komugi meant to Meruem
He just didnt know how much he valued her but when he found out he regretted his actions

pouf = the role/duty of the king (when meruem asks about his name he answers "king should be his name"
pitou = the will of the king, his independance (when asked about the name, she says he should pick whatever he likes)
youpi = the body/safety of the king (regarding the name he doesn't know)
this is also apparent through their abilities and personalities (pitou being more self centered and light hearthed, youpi being more of a "machine" and pouf being obsessed by how the king "should be")
44 Episodes. That's all it took for the writing in HxH to introduce a completely new merciless cell-like shounen villain and to get everyone to cry like a baby about their death. That's why HxH is god tier.

Gon and Meruem changed in their personality in this arc, one became more human and another acted as monster
everyone has a bit of human and a bit of monster in them and the important thing is to have a healthy balance of each, i see both of their developments as good character growth as gon learned assertiveness and meruem learned empathy.

Oh shit I never thougbt about that, meruem being an emitter (confirmed by togashi somewhere or so I read) was a little bit weird, but if you connect the pieces, it makes sense. I thought that meruems nen hability was to take other peoples nen, and that he was an emitter but in reverse, instead of emitting nen he was taking it, but if you think of that more of a thrait from the ants and look at meruems en as his hability, based on his name being the light that illuminates all; the it makes total sense why he is an emitter. This is why I love anime reactions men, you always get a new perspective from the show.

Meruem went from a animal following his instincts to a human. While gon was always a balance between the 2. Gon was always a feral animal but as a human. At the end he let his animal side consume while meruem let his humans side win

Has it been theorized that if Pitou was one of the guards that found king that her cells absorbing into him might have allowed him to cure himself?
I don’t think so. Pitou can restore flesh, but the infection from a poison is just too much. The cells themselves became poisonous, so unless he could destroy his whole body and recreated out of nothing, it was impossible

I loved Meruem more than Gon but don’t say he’s the best villain in all of anime. He’s amazing, his character development is amazing but Aizen is the best villain - on a completely different level compared to Meruem

Aizen is literally one-trick pony with one track personality and zero depth. Get rid of his power and he became a budget side character for Deathnote because that's all there is to him without power to backup his bs.

The totally unnecessary murder of a kidnapped special needs child -- after a long period of torture (and most likely after the murder of the rest of her family) -- is heartbreaking. Meruem is pure evil.
