Being Albino's, Johnny and Edgar were kept inside due to the sun and they practiced and played all the time. Their father was a musician
that played in churches and clubs. Johnny is a blues/rock & roll Icon...one of the great guitarists to play the blues. Great choice, guys,

Johnny Winter was a part of my world for the last 12 years of his life. As a concert promoter I presented him a couple of times a year and got to know him fairly well - Edgar too, but to a lesser degree. I had a lot of fun aboard Johnny’s tour bus on many occasions ! He loved to smoke, and I lived beside the US border in Ontario Canada, so I’d hook him up when he arrived, and he’d drop of his stash with me before crossing back into the US.
I’ve played both his famous guitars.
I miss Johnny.

I saw him at a little club in Columbia SC back in the late 1980's. He did a great show and I saw him light up a bowl on his Bus when we were leaving.
I got to see him in Philly once. One bad dude! Great story Cherry!
Johnny was the second concert I went to, and I was 17 at the time. My first concert was Springsteen, before anyone even knew who he was. I saw Johnny Winter in Long Island, NY. At a smallish club called 'My Father's Place.'

Johnny was used and abused by the 'higher-ups" in the music industry. I was lucky enough to see him perform at Infinity Hall in Norfolk Ct(300 seats). He was gracious and hung around to chat/sign anything for his fans after the show. The world needs more like him. Rock on.

I think it was Willie Dixon who said Johnny was the blackest white man he ever met. This song shows you a bit why he would say that.
He was the only caucasian in The Bluesman's HoF for quite some time. He was welcomed with open arms, too!

JW was definitely one of the best blues guitarists to ever walk the planet, but sadly mostly overlooked by the mainstream. I’m 66 years old and when I was a young teenager in the early 70s, me and my buds were listening to him regularly and considered him fire in those days. I highly recommend the albums “Still Alive and Well,” “Saints and Sinners,” and the live album “Johnny Winter And Live.” You guys may have found the real GOAT right here. 👍👏

One cool thing about Johnny was that while he was playing traditional blues numbers, he was innovated in other areas, like his finger-style, speed, and he played electric 12 string and an electric mandolin(type thing)

Johnny Winter was (RIP) an amazing Blues Guitarist/Producer, he Produced Muddy Waters best version of "Mannish Boy", and a great performer. Had the good fortune to see him three times, once with his brother Edgar, and I walked out after each show totally satisfied and in awe. Johnny was a true "road dog", he was always working or touring, and he passed in a hotel room in Switzerland, while touring.

Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and Eric Clapton were and are considered three of the all -time great Rock/ Blues guitarists of all Time. And they all played in the same era, Late 60s through the 70s at their peak.

One of the top-five performances I've seen live was on March 16, 1975 (I was 15 yrs old) when Johnny Winter & harmonica great James Cotton played the Macon Coliseum. Most shows were over by 12 o'clock, police looked the other way in a crowd smoking weed, nobody was fighting, nobody was rushing the stage, etc. They played until finally the house lights came on at 2:45 a.m. This is one perk (if there's any other) to being 63 years old. You guys are the BEST!
As a pure bluesman, I think Johnny was the best, considering 1) his rhythm guitar accompaniment, 2) his fills, 3) his solos, and 4) his singing. A complete package. It's almost like having Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in one guy.

SRV was clean and crisp. Johnny was gritty and sleazy. I love them both if you listen carefully he has a ridiculous way of slowing down a solo before you can blink an eye

He did a couple of albums and toured with Muddy Waters in 77. Saw Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and James Cotton, live at the Palladium, New York on March 4th 1977

I was turned on to the blues in 1984 at a party and someone put a Muddy Waters album on and Jonny Winter was playing the lead guitar for him and I have been hooked ever since But no one could sing the blues like Muddy Waters He is the real king of the blues to me Everyone that plays the blues has covered most of Muddy Waters songs Jonny don’t get enough credit for how good he was on the guitar He is one of the best guitarist in the world

Johnny's first album was a solo album titled "Johnny Winter". His follow up was titled "Second Winter" which included brother Edgar. Coincidentally, today (7/16/2024) is the 10th anniversary of Johnny Winter's passing. Johnny Winter deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Johnny was a bad bad man on the guitar. One of the baddest for sure. Overlooked now in terms of popularity, always good to see some appreciation. Really liked his Roots album late in his career too.

Johnny was the first white man inducted into the blues hall of fame. If you look at his Bass player in this video that's Tommy Shannon, who you will see in Double trouble playing Bass for Stevie Ray Vaughan you can see in all Stevie's live performances. That London audience didn't really know what to think about that guitar playing back in 1970.
He brought great blues players like Muddy Waters to play at his shows, and opened up whole new careers for several black blues greats
Muddy waters called Johnny his son several times in interviews and they produces Grammy winning albums together..
Stevie Ray Vaughan had similar tight relationships with many of the great older blues players. I used to go to his new years eve party shows in Houston and he always had several of his childhood blues players on stage with him, and at the end they all went on stage and played together. It was awesome.

Aside from Texas and the blues, theres another connection between Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan: Tommy Shannon was the bass player for both.
Beaumont, Texas' favorite son. Saw him open for Janis Joplin in 69,Beaumont Civic Hall.

This is such a legendary performance by the line up from his Columbia Rec. years with rock solid Uncle John Turner on drums and Tommy Shannon who became SRV's bassist later on, playing bass chords to heavy up the sound. It always cracks me up that the audience has no idea how to react a player like this but hey they got it on video anyway ! I got to see him live in 1977 with Jon Paris on bass and crazy ass drummer Bobby T. Unforgettable. One thing about their parents is that were very religious and got spooked when Johnny was born albino. They got over it but when Edgar came out that way too a few years later. I guess the family stopped right there. They both listened to EVERYTHING blues, jazz, country, pop and could do it ALL. You gotta hear the Still Alive and Well as well as Johnny Winter ...And ( the studio album ) with Rick Derringer. Peace and Good health.

Tommy Shannon on bass and Uncle John Turner on drums. Long before Tommy's Double Trouble days. He started with Johnny very young! I think this was from around 1970. Tommy was probably 23-24 years old. You should check out Tommy and his Double Trouble band mate drummer Chris (Whipper) Layton's work in the group Arc Angels.

Edgar's band was called Edgar Winter's White Trash and Johnny's best band was called Johnny Winter And. They are probably best known for their live performances. So I would say Edgar's best two cd's would have to be..... Roadwork (a live cd.... and please check out their versions of the songs Tobacco Road and Back In The USA, on this cd....but all the songs are good on this one) and They Only Come Out At Night (which is a studio cd with Free Ride and Frankenstein)..... and for Johnny's Best 2 cd's, I would have to say Johnny Winter And Live (check out It's My Own Fault and Jumpin Jack Flash.....but all the songs are great on this one) and Johnn Winter Captured Live ( check out the songs Highway 61 and Boney Maroni.....but every song on this cd is great) Check it oujt, guys. My 2 favorites by Johnny are this one and BB's Its My Own Fault. Tommy Shannon's Bass Lines on both are the purist Blues Progressions I ever heard. Johnny IMHO at this period in time (late 60's) was at his best before the drugs got to him. He may have been even a better Slide Guitarist than Skydog!
I've seen most of the greats of my generation accept Hendrix. Johnny, Jeff Beck, Roy Buchanan blew me away the most.
I've seen Johnny maybe 9-10 times, once with Edgar with Johnny's And band. Never a bad show. I own everything by him I can get. The drummer was Uncle Joh. n Turner who wife killed and Tommy Shannon on bass who went on to play with SRV. Jim

The Winter brothers put out the best Texas blues there is, especially Johnny, imo. Check out his "Second Winter" album - the first 2 tracks will floor you.

Johnny Winter, and Jimi Hendrix had a lot of similarities on their attack, and quick change ups. I believe these two are the greatest blues/rock guitarist icons that ever graced the earth. In their time neither of them couldn't be matched. If you listen, the band is working real hard to keep up with Johnny's transitions, and fast tempo. Hendrix was the same. They had a lot of the same qualities, but they played way different styles. The more you hear Johnny....The more you like it and want more....Same with Hendrix. Johnny, and Jimi both started playing professionally in the late 1950's around the same time. It is hard to say if either had an influence on the others playing, or style of playing. I believe they had played together a couple, or few times. But, I am not certain if that was Duane Allman that played with Jimi Hendrix. But anyway.....
