Johnny and his younger brother Edgar Winter were nurtured at an early age by their parents in musical pursuits.] Both were born with albinism and couldn't go outside in the sun and were legally blind. Their father was a Mississippi native, John Dawson Winter Jr. was also a musician who played saxophone and guitar and sang at churches in the South. Both played multiple instruments. Johnny was a blues/rock guitar Icon, and Egar was simply a genius at everything he touch. Thanks for putting these guys on; it's greatly appreciated.
I called them twins. I've done it before. I should know better. I lumped them together even when I typed 'Twins' in my post. Not editing it because my imperfections are mine to own. But I remember reading they are not twins. They got billed as 'Albino Brothers' by radio DJ's and some music news rags back in the era. I guess being more into Black Sabbath I wasn't paying attention is my excuse and sticking to it. But I'm not blaming it on Black Sabbath. One of my high school friends was a total ZZ Top and Winter Brothers guru fan. Groupie really. It was convenient to Houston residents to be ZZ Top and Winter Brothers fans in mid 70's. I had just moved with my family mid high school from Florida, where I'm a white kid playing basketball listening to Motown just adding rock to my ears. So I didn't grow up around it like my friend Kenny. He had really good taste. Neil Young was his favorite artist, which I'd chuckle and shake my head. Like I said: He had good taste! I was still a greenhorn.

The Winter Brothers were living, breathing, walking, talking, playing, human musical notes! Saw them both, manyjust great performers with unreal musical skills, just so much energy from both and the musical chops of genius savants. A good friend and often collaborator with both Winter Brothers was Rick Derringer, who was a pretty big deal himself back in the day with hits in the 60s and 70s, try Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo, his biggest hit from around the era of this video. The studio live cut of Frankenstein is about 12 minutes and Edgar plays 4 instruments I believe. All very very well. Strange up Moog, piano, sax, and drums. It's not only immensely talented - as is the entire 4 piece band - but it's exciting as FFF to watch. It's serious talent in that Geddy Lee rare air. Maybe more. Rush may have had more and more unique material of high quality performances, but Winter Brothers were playing with instruments indoors, not out working on their tans.

I've seen Edgar Winter twice in concert. First time in about 1975, and the last time in 2017 when my son took me to a concert featuring Edgar Winter, Deep Purple and Alice Cooper. My son was 32 at the time and said that he wished he had grown up in the time the best music was made! I had to agree. You don't see that kind of talent anymore.

I just mentioned this now and you said it an hour before. That Frankenstein Live Studio video is maybe one of the if not #1 live music instrumental performances ever. I'm a Sabbath, Rush and Pink Floyd guy who was lucky enough to see SRV rise from nobody at age 17 in San Marcos Texas all around Central Texas for years...and that Frankenstein Live Studio performance is just stunning. What couldn't he do?!

This man has played sax on so many peoples albums, in fact Tina Turner made sure he was on most of her albums,with sax or keyboards when he was available. He really loved playing in studio

Now you have seen what truly gifted musicians the Winter brothers were. Johnny was the most talented guitarist I have ever seen. His ability was god-given. My favorite album was Still Alive and Well, check out...Too Much Seconal. From the Second Winter album, Highway 61 Revisited is my favorite, especially for hard hitting slide guitar. Lots of people mention Stevie Ray Vaughn, who in my experience was a younger version of Johnny. Stevie Ray grew up idolizing Johnny and both were from Texas. Interesting fact: Johnny lived with Muddy Waters for many years down on Tabacco Road in Mississippi.
ZZ Top fed of Winter brothers vibes. I was living in Houston late 70's but busy working too much. I saw so many flyers all around with ZZ Top and Winter Brothers playing festivals and concerts. Houston was rather racist in those years. Nightly local news still referred to undocumented immigrants from Mexico as "wetbacks". On TV local news. And here's ZZ Top and Winter Brothers playing black blues music staples to flip the script. I wasn't aware then of course, but you can bet that Motown and blues like this pumping into Houston back then has a huge impact how Houston is turning more Progressive politically. And that's a good thing.

Johnny was the first non African-American inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. The bassist here, Tommy Shannon, went on to play bass for Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Hey guys. A great band with insane talent throughout the band need its dues. THE BAND is unreal and had many many great tunes. They do a beautiful version of THE WEIGHT with back up vocals with the great STAPLES on the very talented album THE LAST WALTZ. Many greats playing with them at a farewell Thanksgiving bash for 500 close friends. Jr John, Eric Clapton, johny Michelle, Neal Young, Van Morrison and more had a turn to ay and it was recorded on tape. Its AWESOME
Listening to the fantastic "Tobacco Road" reminds me to suggest the live version of "Black Coffee" by Humble Pie, which is one of the most fun live performances you will ever see. You liked the studio version, but the live version is one of few songs that is better than the studio version.

Back in the day, I saw Edgar and Johnny solo. Never saw them together. That would have been a serious light show. Their talent is way beyond their notoriety. Very underrated, in the true sense of the word. Brilliant.

I went to a concert at the Brady theater in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 80s and saw Edgar Winter open for Stevie Ray Vaughn! What a fuckin show!!

Saw Both before Johnny died. Johnny was old but still could play really well. He wasn't as slick as he once was due to age but still very good. Glad i got to see him finally. I saw Edgar years earlier in his own band the Edgar Winter Group. He's a heck of a musician too.

You have done great with Floyd and Zeppelin, thank you. Now you're hitting home. Edgar was my first concert. Came to my school, with the great Ronnie Montrose. Fantastic musician, and he had to measure up to Johnny. You really want some gut tearing blues, you are home, as am I.
I saw Ronnie Montrose around Houston in this era, sadly, I was busy working not going to many shows yet, just trying to keep my apartment and car paid, but I went to an outdoor festival at Rice Stadium with 10 bands or more. All day long outdoor Stadium festivals were a thing back then, as you probably remember. Hand stamps days where you better have some relationship with gate security if you leave, because it was so hot, you'd sweat-off the hand stamp. Anyway I remember up in the bleachers meeting up with friends getting high jamming out and thirst being the factor you can't stay all 12 hours. Beer was like 50 cents or a dollar but I still had to drive. This is around same time / just before I moved out of Houston up to San Marcos and places in San Marcos had 50 Cent PITCHERS OF BEER 3 DAYS A WEEK. You read that right. And SRV around 16-17 years old playing Cheatham St Warehouse. Those nights, might have $3 cover and $2 pitchers, 50 Cent longnecks. Adjusted for inflation not as cheap as it sounds but in Texas, you could see major bands for $8 and even had places like Animal House that every Wednesday, $5 at the door: All you can drink. It was a dance club. Meat market. No live acts that I remember (ahem) just DJ, but that party town environment brought in music acts to other venues. I left Houston too soon. Then again, not fast enough!
The Winter brothers grew up in Beaumont TX and because their albino traits didn't allow a lot of exposure to sunlight, they focused on their musical talent. Johnny, the guitarist, played at Woodstock with this hall of Fame bassist Tommy Shannon...who later went on to play in Double Trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan's band. Edgar Winter, on keyboard, plays multiple instruments and his Edgar Winter Group recorded "Frankenstein"...an absolute banger that you must watch live to believe!
We up here in the upper East love snow and we all love the WINTER bros. Insane talent once seen at a ski resort hillside on a beautiful 4th of July festival day drinking funny juice and smoking a few hippie sticks. Great show and yes I do remember.....Thanks

Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton = Double Trouble. Do you remember their rivalries with Fabulous Thunderbirds? There were some years the big brother was a real asshat to Stevie. He knew little brother had serious talent. He didn't like sharing venues because he was aware everyone was carrying on about Young Stevie's talent, even when T-Birds had hits on national radio. They patched up obviously but I don't think Winter Brothers had that negative tension, at least not like Jimmy and Stevie. I give SRV a nod in raw talent over Johnny, but Johnny Winter definitely better guitarist than Jimmy Vaughn. I think that played into the friction because that was blues foundation in the 'white blues players' in Texas roots of modern blues. Vaughn Brothers album healed it up. Great album too. I know Winter Brothers were close to their parents and had musical education at home together. Whereas SRV would sneak in to listen to his big brother's albums and get a beat down if he was caught or scratched a record. So that's 'the grist' you see SRV on stage kind of "Yeah, I listened to your albums... Look at me now!"

Blues, with heavy doses of Jazz and Gospel. Music like this never reached the charts but was still easily accessible to all. Yet another reason why the music from the 60s and 70s will never be matched.
I had the privilege to see Johnny Winter a few years before he died at the Boardwalk in Orangevale California. He had aged, but he was still playing that soulful Gibson Firebird he was so famous for.

Both Edgar and Johnny have albinism which affected exposure to sunlight. So while their friends were outside playing enjoying the outdoors, the brothers were forced to be indoors and learned to play various instruments honing their skills

In my opinion his soul screams are on par with Wilson Pickett, Bobby Womack and the Godfather of soul: James Brown. Chk out Edgar Winters White Trash live at The Apollo- 'Cool Fool' and Stevie Wonders 'Do Yourself a Favor' are must listens if you like that funky soul.
I saw these brothers way back in the 70's , separately of course, saw Johnny at the Palladium in Hollywood and Edgar at a small after-hour Club called the Golden West, l wasn't even old enough to get in but there l was having one of the best time of my life, thanks for the awesome memories 👍🥰
