I saw Roy in Perth Australia. The auditorium only held a few hundred and was only half full. He was well and truly "out of it man". He managed about 40mins and had to leave the stage. We waited but soon we were told that was it. Some of the best 40 mins of my life. It was only a short time after that that his life tragically ended. RIP Roy, legend.
This is the first time I have watched your chanel, because I saw Roy Buchanan in the headline. Like you, and many others, we are blown away the first time we hear Roy. Luckily I am old and have had the privilege of listening to Roy since the 70's
My late husband's favourite guitar player. Saw him on the Pittsburgh PBS station as a kid and picked up the guitar the next day and didn't put it down till the day he died. So, so glad to see him here, and to hear that others are not letting his music die. Very well done, young man. RIP Buchanan. RIP SBZ.
I first heard Roy Buchanan in the seventies. Have cassettes of Roy. I was in my twenties. Loved sixties music. Loved Jimi.and others back then. Then heard Roy! Changed everything! Listening ever since. My all time favorite player. God bless you Roy.you showed us how to do it all.
For the price of a beer and hour, I probably saw Roy play about 60 or so times. He was playing at the Crossroads Inn in Bladensburg MD with Danny Denver's band. The crowd was a very mixed group. Power drinkers off from work, and college kids attracted to the most amazing guitar player any of us had ever heard. Talked to him several times between sets. Super quiet and polite.
My dad also saw him play there (went to Bladensburg HS) and took guitar lessons from Roy, even had his hair cut by Roy during Roy’s hiatus from full time performing.
I got to meet Roy twice between sets and he was gracious and humble.Roy died in police custody under questionable circumstances 9/14/88.R.I.P.One of the greatest.
Yeah, same here. It was back in 1977 at Alex Cooly’s Electric Ballroom. Found out the next morning reading the Sunday paper that Doc and Merle Watson were playing in a joint a couple blocks away and had a guest sit in named Richard Betts.
I saw him every time he would come to NY in the 70s ! He could be as clean as anybody. When Jimmy Hendrix was growing up he took some lessons from Row .My opinion hes in the top 3 with Jimmy Hendrix and Jeff Beck !
If I am mistaken with my post it's ok to correct me. My memory, and I am going back a bit, is that the Rolling Stones approached Roy to Join them when Brian Jones ceased playing with the Stones. Roy responded that he didn't want to be tied to a particular style of music. He was a trailblazer when it came to guitar. Stones went with Ronnie Wood, another favourite of mine from playing with the Faces.
I started listening to, seeing, and trying to play like Roy in 1977. I saw him approx 10 times, and even met him once very briefly (we shared a little chuckle at the expense of our mutual friend). I love and high!y recommend Second Album, Livestock, and That's what I'm here for. It's important to remember that he is playing his Tele straight into his Fender amp - no effects. So basically, he invented sounds and licks and became the guitarist that everyone had to go see in the early to mid 60's. I feel like he was the Van Halen of his day and after seeing him, players loosened up and let the new sounds flow. Beck, Hendrix, Robertson, etc. all went to see Roy early on in their careers.
Roy invented the pinched harmonics. His first recording was My Babe in 1958 at age 19. Used to hear him when gigging in the old Jersey Shore scene at the jazz clubs in Long Branch. Awesome era - Buchanan - Springsteen - Levon and the Hawks - Dion - Thorogood all up and down the Jersey shore.
Interesting to hear comments about whether Roy or Van Halen did it first! ( & whether Roy was still around) Roy was doing his thing in the 50s. He played with Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before they became The Band. I first heard about him in a Robbie Robertson interview in 1969. Robbie says (more or less) "we had this guy Roy Buchanon who was so good he was scary". I agree with other post who said his "suicide" in jail was questionable. Hung himself with his T-shirt from the bars on cell door??? fishy....
Been a fan since he was playing at colleges ,,, sat right up front like in this video between the speakers when he came east on this tour .... great memories ... no crowd noise .... no damn cell phones .... check out the Carnegie Hall videos. Sat in in Opera Box (Box No.1) and he came over after one of the gals in our group called out. It was like Romeo sernading Juliet.
No problem coming late to the party as long as you appreciate the artist when you do 🎸😎. It’s like finding a rare jem when you discover a great artist buried by time. Hope you find more artists to enjoy …Cheers 🍻
Great insight on Roy’s playing. Thanks for posting. Roy was married to my dads sister. Uncle by marriage. I’ve seen him play many times, live. I still am amazed at how Roy played, he was like a magician, I still wonder how he did so many different licks as though it was endless.
Curious if you remember Demetri Callas, super Guitar player for the 4 Seasons. He was a friend of Roy up in the DC area. They shared ideas, Demetri was my friend for a brief span of time before he passed away. He told me alot about Roy Buchanan.
saw him many years ago in The Paradiso / Amsterdam...I even waited for him at the parking lot to appear, after the show, and I shook his hand! Great memory of a unique guitarist!
Never heard anyone with that many techniques, plus smoking fast leads. A class of his own is all I can say. Amazing. Thanks for your video. Subscribed.
he was the original knuckle buster ,and so sorry about how his life ended. In jail over a D.U.I. arrest ,started listening to him in 76 till this day! Thanks so much fo turning others on to Roy , You just touched the surface.
He makes your eyes water doesn't he! Only guitarist I ever saw who made a crowd go quiet, yea a rowdy Memphis crowd, he walked out on stage didn't say a word and ripped that guitar from top to bottom and we all froze, that crowd went dead quiet. Never ever witnessed that again. We knew that here was a master of guitar. after the show he came out front and smoked one with crowd.
I'm an old fart. I grew up idolizing Jimi Hendrix. I thought nobody was a better guitar player. Then in 1977 I went and saw Roy live. Blew me away, and cause some inner turmoil, because honestly, I think hes a better guitar player in general, and strat player in more detail. He blew me away so much I just didn't know what to think anymore Jimi was a better showman I think, but damn. Roy just plucked his strings like he didn't even need to think about it. It just flowed so natural.
Nobody like him before or after. Best guitarist I've ever seen live in concert and over the years I've seen many. Certainly up there with Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page. He loved playing Hendrix tunes as well and did his songs justice. RIP Roy.
That tone is a telecaster into fender vibrolux with all the dials set on 10. Legendary. And roy invented many of these things, he was around before hendrix. Jimmy page and Jeff beck were both buchanan fans as kids.
I’m greatful to have the same amp he used all those years ago, that being the early 70s/late 60s Fender vibrolux reverb. He was said to turn the bass and treble all the way up and run it full volume, without a doubt the best tone to go with any vintage spec telecaster
There was one comment I read that came from Les Paul back then. He compared Roy with Jimi Hendrix by saying they were similar in talent and sounds but heard Roy doing them first.
saw Roy in the mid-80's here in Oz. He played his set. Typical Roy stuff. One of the great nights and concerts. About 2 hours. When he saw how loved he was he came back out and played a 90minute encore of his favourite Hendrix songs. Yep.
@@setonhillstudios he played for nearly four hours just like the first time we saw George Thorogood & The Destroyers in the late 70's. These artists loved the reaction they received and just kept playing. How memorable for us and them I suppose. Better live than ever on record.
He was astonishingly good, and relatively unknown, but so was the legendary Danny Gatton. Together with Terry Kath, three of the very best to never appear on “greatest guitarist” lists by the idiots who compose them. Jeff Beck uses his fingers to accomplish unusual voicings, is difficult to reproduce his technique and sound, but he doesn’t have a broad repertoire, doesn’t play outside his genre or style. Roy and Danny Gatton could hear a song, and play it back to you, in any style, across any genre. There are many fine rock guitarists listed near the top of rankings though, who could NOT do that, like Vai, Satriani, Hendrix, Page, EVH, Santana, etc. There is no single best or greatest guitarist. Too many ways to measure greatness.
Roy will always be remembered by those who knew him as one of the best of that time period, a true innovator and inspiration to all. Roy poured out his soul whenever he played, an incredible genius. Check out Eric Steckel and Walter Trout !

Amazing. Lucky to have seen him once. Never saw anyone who could play faster than Roy.
Jeff Beck dedicated a song "Because we've ended as lovers" to Roy. Watch it live !
