  • This one is all about upcycling random items into diy birdhouses, ready for spring.
    We'll be repurposing salvaged items like an old boot, enamel pan and an offcut of PVC drainage pipe. An old wooden shelf, a piece of corrugated roofing and a copper extraction shroud. We'll also be experimenting for the first time using Yakisugi or what's more commonly known as shou sugi ban to preserve the timber. Really the world is your oyster, just use your imagination to make beautiful homes for your nesting birds.

    Omgah!!
    I LOVE THE BOOTHOUSE!
    my brother has kept all his old hiking and work boots.
    He said he didn't know why...like 20 pair
    I'm going to get them and make these.
    We are having unusually harsh winter this year.
    Thank you so much!
    You are the greatest!
    From South Carolina, USA

    You will be aware that nestlings need something to help them from the base of the nest to the entrance : e.g. deep grooves in the wood. They will find it very difficult to climb up the inside of a metal saucepan. Perhaps a mesh fitted to the inside of the saucepan would fit the bill. It needs to be in a shaded area or the saucepan will become an oven. The overall design is very clever. This is not a criticism but, hopefully, a constructive suggestion.

    Super ideas and awesome birdhouses. But one important detail is that the inner side with the hole must be rough or with shallow notches applied. Otherwise, chicks, as a rule, cannot cling to the smooth surface and get out of the hole. Accordingly, they remain inside and die. Tested in practice. On the metal inside, you can stick wooden sticks for clawing. Kind regards.

      I use a fine wire mesh on the inside to enable the youngsters climb out. In larger bird homes use a larger wire mesh.

    Great ideas and I just wonder about the pot having enough for the bird to get into the hole with out cutting it self of the metal edge?

  • @tvbox6955

    I wonder if the wind will blow the shoe tounge over the opening. Why not tie the laces on both sides of the toungue to prevent this?

  • @johnlewis9745
    @johnlewis9745 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A great piece of work, but I feel that the corrugated roof detracts from the first nest. A piece of green waterproof felt would have looked much nicer.

    Very creative , but it will be too hot inside because you must have ventilation holes . And black colour is too hot too . Besides that , that’s great ! Congratulations!

    Remember that the birds need to be able to get up to the exit hole, or they will be trapped. Don't assume that they can fly or jump up to the hole.

    Did you sand the inner rim of the hole in the pot too? Don’t forget bird needs to get out too.

    • @ritchandsj3333
      @ritchandsj3333  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did sand it, to get rid of any sharp edges, but the inside is well worn, so should be enough grip.

    what is the size opening in a bird house for wrens?

  • @bagsandbling7564
    @bagsandbling7564 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the boot house! Unfortunately, since there is no (easy) way to remove the old nest and clean out the boot, birds will only nest one season in it. Just like you wouldn't live in a house with someone else's s h*t in it, neither will birds. It looks good though!

    • @ritchandsj3333
      @ritchandsj3333  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The insert in the top of the boot does come out, so we can clean the boot out. But thanks for the comment and advice.
