- I am growing more and more smitten with the modded AKG Perception 420 with each passing day. This is really a fantastic sounding mic now.
This is raw audio cut right into a Zoom F3 at my desk. Zero processing. No EQ, compression or anything on it at all. Not even Hush. Just the mic.
You sound great on this mic.
Thank you, Paul! I do really like the way the midrange presents on this thing.
Welcome to the club! I now have two and I use them for everything!
Happy to finally join! I totally think these are amazing all-rounders. Balanced with a lot of great midrange energy. As crazy as it seems, these are better than most of the mics out there, and I don’t say that lightly.
You're sounding great!! Glad you're enjoying messing with it!
Thanks Jar! I’m really in love with the way this unexpected bundle of wow sounds.
Another great video. The mic mod sounds really nice!
Thanks Duff! The mod really does take it to a whole new level.
DOes this work on the P series also like the p420?
Yes
You would sound good using the mic from my old Remco Caravelle radio transmitter.
Thanks Richard! This voice is the product of lots of work, training
and maintenance so I’m very flattered you think so. It’s probably why all my mic demos basically sound the same.
Can we hear the figure 8 and Omni patterns as well?
Sure!
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff You rock, Mark.
Nice! Did you do anything to that mic other than the capsule?
Stock capsule. All I did was change one capacitor inside the mic.
Very nice. I want to try to get the AKG 420. Is the capsule same as the Microphone-Parts RK-87? I had the Microphone-Parts S87 done few years ago and like it a lot. Thanks
The Takstar capsule is a much better capsule and much closer to the Neumann overall than the 3x overpriced AYM capsule that MicParts passes off as premium. The Takstar has a better, thicker midrange.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff thanks. I wish I have find your channel earlier. The capsule is TSC-2 from JLI? Also, I went to build the mic-parts v-251 tube mic. Any similar diy I can do cheaper?
@@keithphoto4882 Yes, Jules Rykenbusch, a very well-respected mic DIY guy and circuit designer confirmed from JLI that it is the Takstar capsule. And if you're looking for a more authentic vintage tube mic DIY project there is no better place than Dany Bouchard's vintagemicrophghonepcbkit.com.
BTW, any clone KMS 105 you test or experience?
@@keithphoto4882Sorry to say, but no.
Are we able to do this mod on newer versions of perception line?
Yes
Nice one bro , wanted to ask you if you suggest Sooth2 for V.O work - Please suggest , seems promising - want to know from the expert - TC
I suppose it depends upon your room. I’m trying not to use any post on my raw tracks aside from de-essing now. There are no rules, but if Soothe works for you, use it. At this point, I’m leaving nearly all post processing to the client.
The urge to pick up a microphone on your downtime and talk into it speaks more to the egoistical side of creatives, yes? I do the same thing. “Ooh, don’t I sound good…?”
Right? It's me constantly chasing the tone dragon.
By the way, where do you buy those magic Takstar capsules? It's not for me, a friend asked to know, just out of curiosity.
They are easily available. You can actually buy them at JLI. They sell it as the TSC-2, but it has been confirmed by one of the more respected mic DIY'ers as the same Takstar in the Perceptions. www.jlielectronics.com/microphone-capsules/tsc-2/
There are capsules that look very similar on Aliexpress, but given the difference in the visible tension ring screw types, I have no idea if those are Takstar-made or not, so as far as I know JLI is the only retail outlet that carries them.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Thanks!
