- Imagine this. You are a world renown minecraft speedrunner, on record pace. Making you way to the stronghold, you begin to see it in the distance. As you arrive you realise that the stronghold is completely broken and you can't go to the end. So whats going on, is this seed unbeatable?

The sad thing is that I may have played one of these seeds and not known because I don’t go for the Ender dragon
I completely forgot that before 1.9, instead of 128 strongholds, we had only 3 per map. Wow, this should be practically impossible to happen, yet it still did.
I never even realized they updated it from 3 to 128

Considering the importance of the end portal to officially "beat" the game, you'd think the portal would be protected during further world-gen (my mods protect end portals, along with chest and spawners, it's not hard) -- or at least set to generate last so it overwrites other structures. I guess the devs just decided it was too rare/unlikely to be worth the trouble and small amount of performance cost to do that.
Yeah I was thinking that while watching the video, like, why do all of these cave structures and monuments have a higher generation priority than the freaking End Portal? That should be priority #1, and it should overwrite everything else. It boggles the mind that Mohjang had the thing generating first and then everything else generating later. If I were the coder, I would have had the entire world generating first, and THEN have the special structures generating ontop of it, and then, very last, the End Portals/Strongholds since they are of vital importance.
Terraria does this; it generates terrain first, and stuff like the Dungeon and Jungle Temple are generated quite late in the whole map generation thing, IIRC, they actually generate last to prevent stuff like this (though it's not 100% foolproof either, but there's far less chance of a broken world).
@@catzilla2248 I don't recall ever hearing of game-breaking world gen that make finishing the game utterly impossible outside of maybe one strange case of the entrance to the dungeon not spawning properly (which makes it difficult to summon the Moon Lord). But EVEN THEN you can still go to another world and grab the item that summons the cultist and come back to your world and summon the cultist without the dungeon entrance, and thus finish the game.

@@ihatehandleupdate but everyone has encountered a stronghold where it's been so far invaded by a cave (or dungeon or something else if modded) where it's even harder to navigate because whole rooms are cut off
Some people don't realize how much goes into MC seeds. It's absolutely unbelievable. Big props to those who can understand this stuff.

The real problem isn't just that there's only three strongholds. The real problem is the order the structures are generated in. Strongholds, especially portal rooms, should be generated LAST, so that they overwrite anything else that might be in the way (caves, mineshafts, ocean monuments...)
maybe mojang made it be like that on purpose >:))
I dunno I feel like the fact that most strongholds are broken up my caves and minshafts really adds to the immersion that you're actually exploring an ancient forts lost to time.
@@baranorak4080 Hmm... I suppose that's fair. At the very least, have the very last step of generation (after all other features) be to overwrite the ender portal frame with a fresh one, to ensure at minimum that the portal frame will always be intact.

I used to play on PS4 edition where only 1 stronghold generated for the entire world. I spent ages building up the world, thinking I found an OP seed due to all the spawners, diamonds and other good resources could be found not too far from spawn, only to discover that the ONLY stronghold that spawned did so without a portal room. I spent countless hours in creative trying to find it, it just doesn't exist

Here is an extra knowledge fact: Seeds that shared the lower 48 bits are called sister seeds. So if you hear that term thrown around in the seed finding community, that is what that is. Sister seeds are very powerful btw.

He already explained it in the video, it’s near impossible to obstruct every single stronghold in the world, since that would require insane probability which is theoretically impossible, and even then it would take much longer to look for due to the amount of more strongholds they have to look for

1:20 this stronghold is beatable, when the eyes are placed the portal will cut through any block in its path, plus in the top rightish corner u can see the frame has cut through the block aswell

due to their efforts in finding these seeds, now server owners have a list of seeds they can use to prevent players from going to the end, instead of using plugins to disable the end that can fail and be trespassed.

It's possible Mojang have changed the stronghold generation code since then to prefer the portal over other structures too, which would make unbeatable (of this kind) seeds less likely in newer versions

Honestly, I think that speedrun scenario was the best case scenario. Could you imagine if you decided to play on a normal world, and made some really cool builds you're very proud of, and then you couldn't get to the end?
That's just another reason to leave cheats on tbh. If I saw that my world was unbeatable, /gamemode creative and build a portal literally next to my house. ezpz
@@nepnep615 I just feel dirty if I use cheats, it feels like no matter how small it was, it devalues my work.
In this situation, I might recreate the portal in the places it was, but leaving cheats on isnt necessary, you just open LAN with cheats, spawn in the portal frames, then exit and rejoin the world, and then no more cheats

The seed I'm currently playing has a stronghold under an ocean, but no ocean monument covering it. The stronghold itself has actually been offset to be partially under a tiny island in the ocean, but you can still see the stone bricks of the library and portal room at the bottom of the sea.

In my current main world the first Stronghold we found was overplayed with an abandoned mineshaft! It’s the craziest stronghold I have ever seen, and really rough to navigate as the floor levels don’t really match up

I found something like this before actually, the stronghold was entirely screwed there wasn’t even a portal room at all. Although I think it was actually a result of the world being so old that the structure generation had just completely messed up. (I started this world when Woodland mansions were first introduced if I remember right. And back then I never knew how to beat the ender dragon in survival)

I remember in the really old versions, caves would override the strongholds quite often and make it impossible at that stronghold, and I wasn't aware that other strongholds could spawn so that sucked lol

I've been playing on my main survival world for a few days now and decided to go the end and when I got there it wasnt there, the portal and the portal room were absolutely nowhere to be found. I even went into creative to find it and could not. It really sucks when it happens on a main world you've worked hard on. In the end i just spawned myself the items to make one

I remember of playing minecraft on my ps3, and after months on the world, i decided to beat the game. But when i found the strong hold... there was no portal room, and that was the only one strong hold on the world.
When I was very young, I would often play Minecraft on my aunt's ipad. It was about 2015 or 2016 about the time when I booted up a new world and had an idea of making an under ground base in creative mode as I would not die. But wile I was digging down I found AN OCEAN MONUMENT UNDERGROUND! It wasn't in any body of water but might have been near one, I can't remember. But being as young as I was thought it was a normal thing as I was new to the game. I don't know if I deleted that world or not but I could still go back and check. This memory stuck with me until this video I had to say something, seeing it might be darn rare.

In newer versions we do have more options in how to destroy them. Ocean monuments still work up to 1.15 (on bedrock even today they can) , ruined portals, ocean ruins (1.15 I think), and fossils. I might be forgetting a structure

I think the generation of the strongholds being in the same spot is is saying the the different seeds are sister seeds. Therefore the reason why the ocean monuments were also in the same place. This also means that other structures such as villages, or nerther portal riuns can be in the same spots throughout the seeds.

i once had a map on xbox 360, where the stronghold didnt even bother generating the portal room, and this was back when world size was big but limited, the stronghold was well within map bounds so this was very wierd.

1:26 you can still access that portal, you just need one TNT, 5 of any solid block and a lever or redstone block. Place the TNT against the Prismarine pillar then cover the 4 sides with blocks then either cover the last face with a redstone block or another solid block and use the lever to ignite the TNT. It'll destroy enough blocks to give you access to the portal.
Or you could use a pickaxe

as soon as you said a special guest i knew AntVemon was coming then i watched and heard his song play and i was just like I KNEW IT!!!.
I have a 1.4 world where the stronghold is partly exposed by an open air ravine. The rest of the stronghold is fine and normal, and I don't see any issues around the ravine as there are other biomes other then the ocean around it.

It is still possible, just extremely hard. You can see that one of the portals is still intact, just obstructed by a pillar. If you could kill the elder guardians and mine the pillar, you can still enter the end. You just need to prepare more.

That's true, however if you launch an ender eye from each of the 2 strongholds you know, as shown, you can get the 3rd position by intersecting lines

My one gripe with this video, though it's so cool, is you explained Stronghold generation, but did not explain Ocean Monument Generation.
the very first time i tried to go to the end i found a stronghold with no portal, spent 2 days looking for it, turns out a mineshaft generated through the portal room. i was so confused. this was also on bedrock a long long time ago, which i think only had 1 stronghold to begin with, either way i at least believed there was only 1 at the time, so i restarted my world :(

100.000 with 5 digits, (00000-99999)
1M with 6, etc..
so I guess having 1 of those 10.000 seeds have an obstructed portal room is pretty dam rare

I got something like this on the Xbox 360 Edition once. There was one of those secret underground base things underneath an igloo and it cut into the End portal.
i had this happen on my hardcore world, all 3 strongholds closest to spawn didnt generate portal rooms, i had to travel like 10k blocks out of spawn to find a stronghold with a portal

In my pixelmon world, my stronghold ended up being _just_ the portal room in the ocean. That was a fun revelation

@Masha GG yes the portal is not good for a speedrun but from what we see the portal is still capable of taking players to the end. The video claims it can’t.
@Masha GG you can just place eyes without mining prismarine, portal blocks will brake some, then you just need to brake 2 prizmarine blocks to enter - time lost 10 sec

About a year ago, I got a seed where a geode had spawned over the portal. I was kinda pissed when I found this out as I had spent about a month on the world to later figure out I couldn't complete the game. I still have the world on my Xbox, I would love to know how rare this is.

you dont triangulate the position of a stronghold by knowing where the other 2 are you triangulate them by throwing 2 eyes towards the same strong hold at different locations and go to where their paths intersect
I think they were expalining how to find the 3rd stronghold if you know the positions of the other 2 - you can do guesstimates with just one stronghold position to find the other 2 as well

I remember seeing something about a guy who was on his survival world and he was about to go beat the game, but when he arrived at the stronghold he saw the portal frame had been obstructed by a fossil. I remember considering how unlucky he must be, but after watching this. Imagine if someone EVER downloaded one of these seeds randomly and made it their main survival world! xD

Ideally the game would generate "structure spots" in suitable areas, and then grab a random structure fitting the spot's keywords (underground, in the ocean, biome, etc) from an array populated at gamestart. That way no structure could override another, and the system would be infinitely extensible by populating the array with more structures.
Interesting, but it's probably hard to code, but I personally think the Mojang team can handle it
that would mean even longer world gen times seeing how many structures there are, this is the optimal since now we have many portal rooms.

This is actually how nether structures are generated (only fortresses and bastions though I think); only one can spawn in each 368 x 368 region.

I actually found one seed without a portal on legacy Xbox 360.
I played it with a friend through months and we decided to find the portal, and when we got to it - no stronghold. No portal. Nothing.
That was my worst failure during my life, we even entered creative to check but literally NO stronghold, not even half a block of one, it just didn't spawned.
You just have to remove the prismarine in that portal room with the portal frames. As long as a full frame is there all you need is a replicated portal room. It'll ignite.
