- I made a Minecraft Datapack that overhauls the oceans, in order to beat Minecraft Update Aquatic! This ocean update is huge, including lots of new Minecraft features like the Kraken, Atlantis, Submarines, and more!

There are a LOT of comments about Mojang here...i want to make it clear: This is video is not meant to seriously "beat" Mojang. Obviously, this "update" has neither the amount of content, or the amount of quality control. I used a weird metric to measure this simply to create an interesting goal for the video, but to GENUINELY compare my work to a Mojang update is grossly short-sighted.
Mojang has to create content for 2 versions of the game, they have to ensure it is well balanced and doesnt change the core gameplay, and they have to make sure it is both very well debugged and that it creates as little lag as possible.
I just simply took any cool idea i had and threw it in the game, and the work ive done here would NOT be at all worthy of being a real update. (Maybe parts of it would be cool for a real one, but thats not the point)
Im also not going to say that Mojang couldnt do better. BUT, please do not use my light hearted video intended for fun to disparage Mojang. Its not a fair comparison.
oh wow

Protecting your possible future job at mojang ? 😂
Ur a good person 👍
I'd say it's quite the fair comparison. Sure, your datapack may not be as polished as it could be, but neither is Minecraft. To say Mojang optimizes and debugs their game is insane and quite simply untrue for the most part. There's also the fact you did this amount of work alone while they have 2 different teams working on each version.
I love the mod except one thing. The sea horses should be
Slower than the submarine so you have a choice. Faster speed or strength.
Yh
Also less health since, you know, they aren't made of metal. That way you still have to watch how you move or whatever you're fighting might kill it. Makes it more skill-based so it's not just an instant power-up.
@@vormiam9242 Seahorse having less health but faster speed than the submarine, would be balanced right.
Nah, you cant breathe under water with them so they are only viable late game by which point there should be more of an incentive to use them

Sick datapack, really impressive content that actually fits really well.

I wish they added - like the Deep Dark - to the Ocean. Like ultra deep ocean areas/Mariana Trench type areas. With loot, new mob/s, scary fish/monsters, super dark and you need a special torch/lighting to explore it.
Wow, that will be seriously spooky and if conquered, rewarding
I will call it the deep abyss
They did significantly increase the depth of the worlds so this is not outside of the realm of possibility.
i think the mod aquamirae is perfect for that.
And water pressure
The one thing I always want with ocean based minecraft content is some sort of deep abys biome. I love subnautica, and I love that feeling of sinking down as the sun dims and you still can't see the bottom, just the emptiness around you. Then that sudden calm when you finally reach the bottom and everything feels isolated.
there is a world gen mod that is pretty cool " Big Globe " deepest i got in the ocean was -266 below a sea level of y 0
Alex's caves is getting a new update that adds an abyss biome and a brand new leviathan mob straight out of subnautica

To those asking, i will *not* be making a mod edition of this! Data packing has some flaws, but it also has some great perks, like being able to be played in multiplayer without custom clients, for instance. And personally, i find it a lot more fun!
Data packs get a very bad reputation, but the reality is they are very capable modding options, its just that the support and tools are not nearly as established as traditional modding. My channel is dedicated to showing what *can* be done with data packs, to show people it is a valid and good option for many applications!
But its a masterpiece
You can just pack the datapack and resourcepack into a mod and call it a day(modrinth can do it automatically too, idk if it adds the resourcepack so you might have to do that by hand)
Yoo this is so good. Great job dude. Definitely did better than mojang
Add storage to the submarine to have another incentive to use sibmarine instead of seahorse
IfI were to pop this datapack on a Java server, and I had Geyser installed, would Bedrock players be able to join still?

Have you ever thought about building your own block-based survival game from scratch so you don't have to rely on the hacks, tricks and workarounds for using datapacks?
(That's a MA-HOOSIVE task of course)
The hacks, tricks, and work-arounds are EXACTLY why I like data packing! There's a sense of creativity you just don't find anywhere else!
As far as making my own game, I'd love to, but im nowhere near a good enough coder to do that! Maybe one day :)
@@CodeNeonMCmaybe you could take on bedrock addons? They're on the same surface as addons except being able to create entities and stuff. Still takes a lot of tricks and stuff to make a good mod.
Making a minecraft clone is nothing like making a data pack lmao. I don’t even know if the guy knows how to code and your thinking he could make a 3D voxel survival game😂
@@jewishbanana7055 this level of data-packing absolutely involves an amount of coding. it's probably harder in some ways than making the game from scratch due to the work-arounds, too... hopefully the next updates make it even easier, though. the biggest downside to work-arounds being necessary is it discourages people whom lack the skills and/or patience to deal with them. another major one is they can impact performance.
also, between multiple open-source clones and tons of technical details about the engine/concepts, anyone truly willing to put forth the effort *should* be able to build a new minecraft-like game from scratch. or at least, build-over the code someone else already wrote.
@@ETXAlienRobot201 @jewishbanana7055 guys, guys! I'll just tell ya lol.
I have dabbled with coding on and off since I was 10, I started with Basic, and moved on to C#. I never got very good at it, but I could definitely code some simple programs if push came to shove.
Data packing, especially on this level, is very similar to coding. It's simplified, but the core concepts are there. The system itself is easier than full-on coding, however pushing it to this level is very challenging.
So could I code a voxel survival game? Absolutely not lol. Maybe if I dedicated myself to it for a couple years, but not now! If I wanted to, I'd probably tear Minecraft apart and rebuild it 😆
You’ll be able to find the submarine broken on the ocean floor 💀💀💀

I audibly gasped at the jelly jar. I love that so much. I wish it was in vanilla minecraft
That sea horse and city of Atlantis with residents in it is sooooo cool , Mojang should definitely add it
If Mojang had one person with the same desire to work, motivation and conviction for any part of creative process and development (art design, game design, feature concept, debugging, etc) as you have we would have updates the level of Village and Pillage or Nether Update each half year or even less.
You know, i always felt like this mojang hate is stupid. I mean, they have the fraking creator of the aether in their team and all, i doubt they are lazy.
What is more likely is that microsoft put some guidelines in place for them, which makes it difficult for them to add more features, which honestly makes a lot more sence that 600 people being lazy.
They make updates for the community
How would your desire to work be if you were making something for a group that treats you like shit constantly because you didn't add a mod into vanilla that doesn't fit at all?
@@CherryBotV2 Oh, sorry, I didn't know that the job of programmers and designers was to spend their entire day on Twitter, I used to think that people who need to earn money to eat offer their work in exchange for money and that they work during their work hours. My wrong
What I have to say, these excuses about "don't turn vanilla into a mod" don't they don't fit anymore, in the Minecraft forums the puritans of the community have always been complaining about the suggestions of the rest of the community calling them "so mod-like" or things like that, Mojang has been years adding mod-like things and usually withut the "cool" components that make those mods good. Extensive examples like polar bears, bees, strider, axolotl, allay (in general all the mobs from mob votes) and warden (rare case in which it went right).
@@Blink-qq3tx You got a point right there, we don't really know, who is more to blame if Microsoft or Mojang, but it would be strange to think that Microsoft would like to pay 600 workers for just ocassional and limited job.
Also isn't Microsoft the current owner of thing like COD and Doom? I know it could not be possible to use the same guidelines on all games since are different themed and with different players, but wtf is this ideology of "not adding sharks, snakes, crocodiles or any other """ferocious""" carnivore animal, because kids could not understand it and they'll try to go to search them on real life wheter trying to taming or killing them". And I'm not trying to say that adding sharks should be a priority for Mojang but that hypocrital thinking make them lose opportunities on lots of ways to improving Minecraft biomes and ecosystems.
What I mean with hypocrital is, that if it is Microsoft fault, they falling in the nocive idea that video games disrupt the minds of young people. If it is Mojang fault's that still being hypocrital and ignorant, while they keep things like the wolf, spider, bees and polar bear, when their interactions with players could permit or enhace them to kill or to try to tame them, and that's ignorant because if not being for that ideology they could add lots of animal mobs (again I'm not saying this is a priority but must be a possibility), with the same neutral behavior but different game mechanics (just like in real life animals are not killing machines that must be killed)
@@Blink-qq3txnaw they’re lazy, they could easily have the aether mod guy add the realm as an actual feature
This is a really cool datapack! It feels more like a mod than a datapack haha
That's what I try to do here! I'm a data pack advocate lol. The biggest reason data packs aren't seen as powerful as mods is because the tools and resources for modding is MUCH more established than for data packs....I want to show that data packs CAN be just as good as mods in a lot of cases, you've just got to learn how to do it!
It’s awesome to be able to use Datapacks anywhere with no hassle
datapacks aren't "just as good as mods" for a lot of scenarios and their drawbacks are definitely noticeable... usually takes way more work to do the same thing as a mod. more compromises.
that's not to say i think datapacks suck, they've got way more powerful as mojang has implemented stuff like the display and interaction entities, but we literally got a /damage command not long ago.. and we don't even have NBT crafting. its just.. weird all around. but it's cool i guess for the convenience of not having to install mods
@@avexus7756 oh I'm not saying data packs are as good as mods across the board. At the end of the day there's a huge list of things mods can do that data packs can't.
But people are also overly harsh on them. I started making data pack content because I noticed how many GIANT, high quality data packs were out there that nobody was looking at simply because they assumed data packs were bad.
At the end of the day, my point isn't to say that data packs should replace mods, it's that they have a much better place alongside modding than the stigma around them suggests. For instance, a well-made data pack will almost always be a better option for custom multiplayer content than mods simply because they can add content without requiring all players on the server to mod their clients. Just join the server, and it's there. No hassle.
You are so underated for the quality of content you make you should have at least 100k subs. Spending 2 months on a data pack is fantastic great job it looks really cool!

better work than Mojang has done in years! Keep it up!
Mojang has to add stuff that fits into the game, Polish it, and make it for Java and bedrock and both use different coding language and way more reasons
@@niceriley And just imagine one person in two months made the first part of the job (adding features), a big team as Mojang is, is supposed to make all the rest of the job you mention during the same time. "Stuff that fits into the game" can barely be more than an excuse of a worker tired and bored of its job and finds a way to reduce the work that have to deliver at the end of the month.
No excuses here for Mojang more than having to do that all in two different coding languages (which by the way must be easier to make than make literally anything on the precarious "programming language they provided as datapacking is).

The logic thought and algorithms behind solving something that is far away from your limitations is something to appreciate.
Something with Mojang has years dealing with it (movable tile entities as example) and a much less limited programming language to deal with it.
If you are going to use those kind of arguments, why isn't Mojang developing its own coding languages and building its own computers from 0?

This is the most stupidest argument I have heard against Mojnag and its baffling.
Community: Can we get more updates?
Mojang: Ok, thats what we are trying to do. But honestly, its impossible.
Community: CodeNeon was able to build this in a cave! With a box of scraps!
This is insane! I can't believe you actually did all of that in a datapack!
Great work. Deep sea needs more dangers and the Kraken is a perfect addition. And i like the mines - although i would look to replace them with something that feels more like Minecraft, e.g. a plant that has explosive spores. Mines feel too modern world warfare to me.
Mobility with the sub and sea horses is important when players need to search the oceans. But as you said they are similar - and i would either only keep one of them or give them distinct disadvantages to have players chose their playstyle. Like Infinity vs Mending. I'm a big fan of exploration, so finding a broken down sub that you have to repair sounds fun (also city of Atlantis!!)). Maybe the key difference would be damage, i.e. subs need to be repaired with iron while sea horses require potions. And subs would be a bit more clunky to steer but protect you from damage. Or something like that.
And i love the Eldritch Core trade off with permanent hunger. God tier item, but you can't use it forever because it will consume you.
no. kamikaze fish. We need kamikaze fish. Minecraft players need to experience the horror of hearing that high pitched whistling sound as that stupid red fish speeds towards you, using its own body as a weapon. Fuck crash fish.
TNT was first properly discovered in the late 1800s, but it’s still in the game. I think mines are fine.
I think the Helmet of the Sea misses the opportunity to provide a new diamond+ tier of stuff (at least, armor) to compete with (but not clearly surpass) Netherite. Although, if your other datapacks all have different unique items to replace the generic ones, that could work, too.
2:07 you can specify that the item frame is invis before you place/spawn it (not sure which you are doing there, but you can give a player an item frame with that nbt data attached or summon one with it) by the way. That way you don't have that one tick of seeing an empty item frame. :)
This should get way more views, crazy effort put into it. Cant wait to try out the data pack
2:58 its funny because hes saying that it will inevitably be connected to the meme but here i am getting this recommended 1 year later and i would NOT have thought of the Titan Submersible had you not brought it up.

@@NRH_1776 I’m not saying what he made isn’t cool I’m saying the minecraft devs are lazy, and most of the updates severely lack content. What they usually add is usually less than what could realistically be made by a single person with the time between releases.

If only Mojain did this.
Haven’t finished watching but

Scuba flippers (x2 water mobility)
How about an island that was submerged? A new biome that no longer exists but has loot.
Or maybe a certain area where it’s full of toxic chemicals/waste and you’ll need certain gear to explore it without being poisoned.
Would you be willing to make a datapack tutorial? I keep trying to follow others but they skip around and just don't get to the point most of the time. Just a basic pack that goes over ALL of the basics. Something to teach a foundation in one playlist.
most tutorials are this way... though datapacks largely feel like it's an intentional thing to omit so much information. some parts are legitimately hard to get in-depth with [worldgen, particularly...] , others i feel like either they expect you to figure out or are actively gate-keeping the information. blame our society, it incentivizes this behavior. i won't deny other issues playing-into this; it is just as difficult, if not more to teach it as it is to learn. however, i don't believe either that it is JUST those reasons. scarcity makes their skills "valuable", thus profitable. also, it's possible/likely they inadvertently end-up giving-away key information which could be used to mess-around with the stuff they made. [well, it makes it easier to do...]
there's also another common issue with tutorials : easy content, easy clicks.
i agree it'd be great to have a tutorial/playlist [even spread across several creators specialized in different aspects of it] that really lays-down how to do something useful. but one thing that is universal to these sorts of problems/topics : dissect/study what someone else made. it's a good way to learn how to do things yourself. rather than asking "how do i do this?" , ask/study "how did they do this?". bonus points for asking/discerning "why did they do this?". some people don't appreciate this line of thought, pay them no mind, and just don't do something scummy like [re-]sell others' stuff on some shady website.

If you want to blow your mind, some big recommendations-
1. The Bracken Pack (adds 11 new dimensions!)
2. The Expansion (space exploration!)
3. Beasts and Monsters (tons of Witcher content)
4. Ethera (huge, detailed new dimension with over 100 new things)
5. The Way of the Dragon Warrior (kung fu RPG)
6. Essence RPG (HUGE, very, very well made RPG system for MC)
7. Manic (very spooky and scary...one of the highest quality data packs out there)
@@CodeNeonMC I was into datapacks mostly for world gen stuff. Thanks for showing me these, I'll 100% take a look.
I think mojang should hire you and have you put these genius updates officially into the game. It would be dope af fr.
Bro they have the aether dev on their team it's not gonna change anything

Holy crap, the jelly jar is a must have for actual vanilla Minecraft!!!!
Everything in this video was pretty well designed except the helmet of the sea, since it completely removes the conduit from use in the base game
I think it'd be better if you made it potentially easier to get conduit power or included conduits more in the datapack maybe as a way to fight the boss.
asside from that great datapack!
not calling the underwater villagers Gillagers is a missed opportunity imo
i love the idea of minefields and the submarine, amazing
I was in awe when seeing Atlantis and the underwater villagers
I just realized that finding two identical seahorses will be a 1/100,000 chance which is probably the rarest event in the game.
What id really like to see is somebody A) remove minecrafts arbitrary build limit, B) extend world generation to make full use of an uncapped build height and C) make oceans MUCH deeper and more terrifying (think subnautica)
All of these are very possible aslong as you also fixed minecrafts inherent optimization issues, which can be done but is very annoying to do without just remaking the entire game from the ground up bc Java sucks ass sometimes.
Lets hope "mojang is lazy" people won't use this as ammunition...
Considering how much of the creation process for this pseudo-update was spent catching up to the artificial bloat of the obscene number of tropical fish variants, if you didn't do that, I have a feeling this would be relatively easy to do. Update Aquatic was.. frankly a bit underwhelming in terms of content.
Y'know, I'm surprised no one thought about making a scuba helmet recipe. Maybe a square of eight irons and a glass on the center would do it. Boom, breathe underwater, or at the very least have a much more expansive air limit. Plus, combining the helmet with glowdust or lanterns or so could allow to add a light source to it, albeit a not very powerful one, so it'd still be more limited than a Night Vision potion.
Still, excellent job on the modifications! This looks really fun, and I love many of the ideas!
Actually this was the very first thing I considered adding lol. In fact, that's pretty much what the Helm of the Sea is, just a bit more Minecraft-y.
@@CodeNeonMC aye, good point! I just figured it would be a good early tool for folks who wanted to explore the ocean but couldn't yet craft potions.
DUDE KRACKE !!! Yo, this is so sick. Honestly, I know you’re not trying to beat Mojang, but… dude, it’s so good, and I’d argue that you have. Atlantis, minefields, the bloody SEAHORSES, I love it so much!! Plus, subs. This is so rad, I love it, and if Mojang released this, I’d be so psyched.
Idea: have each of the seahorse colors contribute some but different amount to their speed. Doing some clever math (which I could help out with), you can choose these different parts such that there are 100000 unique speeds, and thus a single fastest seahorse :D, with all seahorses having equal probability of occurring (if the parts are distributed randomly and uniformly).
"I need to add smaller features"
*Proceeds to add the entirety of Atlantis*
"Insane task" just add more than two mobs and a tree and you've already beat Mojang's updates lmao. Jokes aside, I absolutely LOVE seeing the Minecraft ocean get the love it deserves.
Honestly, I’ve always thought Minecraft is limited to early Industrial Revolution mechanics, so things like mines, submarines, guns etc will probably never be added, probably to encourage people to create them themselves. Another thing I don’t like is the murfolk. Again, Minecraft isn’t supposed to have too many humanlike mobs, otherwise it’s not gonna have that lonely feeling. The kraken is good, but it should have a specific way to be spawned. I actually really like the atlantis idea, and the trading could still be done in the form of a sacrifice altar or something. And the armour is just great. I really think you should’ve added sharks & whales though, those are really missing from Minecraft. Saltwater crocodiles would be nice too.
My biggest wish for minecraft is this:
Imagine this, the oceans in minecraft would be quite shallow and a little deep near shore, but the more you swim out, the deeper it gets, and eventually it gets so deep you can’t even see the bottom of the ocean, and if you swim too deep, a loading screen would appear and you’d be transported to the deep dark waters where its pitch black and theres only water. There is a floor but its really deep down and not even night vision would help a lot.
The mobs that would appear here would get more dangerous the more you go down, like at first theres an angler fish, then theres a shark, and next thing you know you’re up against the kraken, and the bottom of the deep dark waters is just sand but there are going to be items only found on the bottom
New items that will be made for this could be a glass helmet that gives you infinite water breathing and to get it all you gotta do is get 8 glass panes and craft it like a furnace.
I really hope this is made or at least modded In because this would make the Minecraft Oceans so much better and scarier
10/10 Dude! 😁
This is how Minecraft should be imo, i still cant understand to this day how Block Story never got its recognition that it deserved with the amount of content that it had.
I always preferred plug-ins over mods because plug-ins are server-side, but you just blew my mind with datapacks. Thank you.
Also, I may be a bit biased for the Kraken. :>
Admittedly, plugins are more reliable as far as performance goes. This pack, for example, will support at most 4-5 people on your average server when it hits version 1.0, and in it's current state I wouldn't want more than 2-3.
But with a careful look, they can be better than plugins in some applications!
@@CodeNeonMC Very true, I was wondering about the performance as a shower thought believe it or not. Thanks for answering pre-emptively!
@@krakenmahboy np! And there are packs that will do GREAT in multiplayer. Particularly structure focused ones, but also some other packs! A great one is Essence RPG for multiplayer!
Anyways, glad to offer some insight lol! Have a good one
This with the Abyssal Chasms from the Alex’s Caves mods sound like a perfect combo for ocean-related stuff.
A mod creations youtuber who actually releases the amazing mods he shows? This makes me very happy.
2:40 i think its much nicer if you replace submarine to a scuba dive were you can build an oxygen tank and using 8 irons and a pearl or heart of the sea. submarine is a lot more complex
The submarine stands out so much and clash with the style but the seahorse feature was very clever and I could see it added to the game itself.
Minefield is in the same boat (ha) as the submarine in that they stand out. There are way too many and they are way too big
This rocks!! Atlantis architecture really reminds me of that super old minecraft animation
Pro tip, you can make the jellyfish glow _without_ shaders. Just use the light tag for the Display Entity. You're welcome
That's what I did! It's just not very visible underwater, though it does technically glow in vanilla
so based
i wish mojan devs did more than 30 minutes of work so they could add cool stuff like this too
the ocean update felt so tame for an ocean update it was basically just blocks aside from the mini boss temple area
this looks amazing! i wish the ocean biomes felt as interactive as this, currently they feel so useless aside from just treasure spamming and getting a helmet to explore underwater caves for more resources which is just mining but underwater this time;;; this sense of progression in minecraft feels so poor compared to mods and datapacks :(
Wow this is really cool better than mojangs 😂 good work !!
You should make a tutorial series that goes over how you make things like the deep dark "update". It would be very cool and entertaining, and could lead to so many cool data packs!! Found your channel yesterday, and I LOVE your work

now I need the "surviving a 100 days" videos with this amazing data pack!!
Really cool pack and video! And it was made in 2 months? That's really impressive.
Now I can force it upon my friends without getting them to download a mod loader...
Mojang should take notes, everything you added actually has valid uses and depth
