  • Why You Should Watch Gakkou Gurashi (School Live)
    So why should you watch Gakkou Gurashi (School Live)? Well, being my favorite anime, Gakkou Gurashi is something I have immense respect and love for. It's creative, it's fun, it's sad, it's unique, and it's something that always manages to hit me where it hurts in the best way. I don't want to say too much to avoid spoilers and It would feel redundant saying what I already say in the video. Besides, explaining why your favorite, is your favorite, is... difficult. I hope I was able to encapsulate enough of what I loved in this video... but there's still plenty to say. If you want to know specifics, leave a comment and I'll try to answer it. Also, kudos for reading the description, I don't think people ever do.

    On the topic of the zombies being blurred out (8:20), I noticed that when the zombies have that weird effect on them, it was mainly Kirumi who was dealing with them. My interpretation of that was that the weird effect was what Kirumi saw, obscuring the figure and hiding what the zombie once was, a person. By doing this, she could pretend it wasn't a person once, and therefore not freeze up when killing them.

    • @UrbanTheMyth

      that's actually an interesting observation I haven't considered

      @@UrbanTheMyth If you want the moment I think clearly represents this, it's when Kirumi confronts Megu-nee. ( th-cam.com/video/nRzqaFvoqYs/w-d-xo.html here's a link to the moment for convenience). When Kirumi first sees her, she is completely covered in the black mist. The mist then lightens up a little, so we can make out the features of Megu-nee. Kirumi then hesitates, but gathers the resolve to kill her. Her mind is putting the mist there, so she can pretend it's not Megu-nee. It's only when she gets closer, that the mist disappears entirely, and she freezes up. Now that the mist is gone, she can see Megu-nee in her entirety, and can't bring herself to kill her, because she remembers who she once was. (Also, thank you for noticing my comment!)

      I have to admit, the blurred zombies leads into my only frustration with the anime adaptation of School Live. With the way they have blurred the zombies, you cannot actually tell... but the lone zombie that Miki looks back at that was in the school yard was Kei... always heartwrenching when you read it.

      stormtrooperdylan - I haven’t really watched the anime but in the manga you get a little glimpse of how the zombies think , Changing perspective from the girls to the teacher ( who is a zombie ) and showing us how she feels / thinks as a zombie. I highly recommend the manga !!

    • @awesomechainsaw
      @awesomechainsaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I also believe that to be the case as in the first fight with a zombie we see in the series. Episode 2 about 8:40 minutes in. Kurumi spots a zombie and we see it for a good few seconds completely normal. Then Kurumi psychs herself up and the scene becomes murky and shadowy hiding it’s form. Kurumi bashes the zombie to the ground. Plants her foot on the chest, and goes for the death blow. Only to notice that the zombie’s phone has been knocked loose and turned on. Revealing it’s screen saver. A picture of the girl the zombie used to be and her boyfriend. As soon as Kurumi notices the shadows around the zombie starts to recede revealing parts of it’s body once more.

      I just finished watching it, but I have been left with the same ache of know exactly when and how she passed, it was really a well done plot twist that even tho I saw it coming when she suddenly teleported to the car in the mall chapter, nevertheless it was sad cuz I grew fond of her, but I can't stoo this feel to know more about such a major plot twist and how it happened.....very well done, cuz in other shows even for the walking dead core characters get massive plot armor to advance the story but here it's more believable that someone would die if they aren't careful how they handle things in an outbreak like that...and how the show doesn't shy away from showing the aftermath of such mistakes take place, it was kinda shocking seeing her like that. Very well done. I do have some issue with the many questionable decisions the characters make that would put them in very dangerous situations, but then again, they're supposed to be high school girls and not some spec ops units with knowledge on how to act during such event...but they are few and really don't detract from the overall experience...

    Just a quick note about the "cross in the garden" shot :
    When you're studying scene in a cinematographic point of view, you'll notice that something the spectator have to see as to be placed either on a third of the picture (vertical or horizontal) or at the center and in rare exception, the edge of the screen. The cross isn't at a third, isn't at the center, isn't on the edge. It is placed in a strange dead-angle on purpose so that your brain "sees" it but your eyes don't, and the timing is so short that you don't really have the time to notice it.
    In fact, most people I showed the first episode didn't noticed it at all !
    And that was the goal : putting it in plain sight while hiding it. They did such a wonderfulll job on hiding things on a very deep level.... I have a deep respect for the team behind the storyboard

    One thing I enjoy with this show is just how in the dark the viewer is alongside the main cast. In similar zombie related media like Highschool of the Dead and the Walking Dead the zombies are wondered about for an episode here and there, but in School Live the zombies are constantly questioned about and they wonder more and more about them. the story opens with the zombies being more of a force keeping the cast at bay, but as more is discovered the audience learns more alongside its main cast. My single favorite moment for this is after they find the safe with documents talking about how there's some sort of bioweapon and how the school is meant to support a large amount of people in the event of an outbreak. I love this moment because that shock and realization hits the viewer at the same time it does the main cast. I honestly could go on and on about this show and why I love it, the hardest part for me is not spoiling it for people.

    I just finished the show and I think what really got me is the relationship between megami and Yuki. I think it helps the ending. The whole time I was hoping megami was real and not a figment. During the letter episode they talk about what are the chances it getting to someone. I feel like the ending and the graduation scene shows this theme of Hope and tradition. That maybe when a love one says " I'll always be in your heart" it means it is true. What are we without our past and the people we have encountered along the way.

      I think that is interesting, but also really hard to do logically with the anime. Only from rewatching the first episode today I find that this would be hard. There are many things that she would never be able to do without the other members with her. With the anime it’s a thing where she slowly but surely starts to realize what’s happening around her and her fake reality is breaking. the anime would be very different if all of the characters were to be killed off.

    This is an awesome review and I feel like you were able to properly explain the anime's charm points. The more I think about Gakkougurashi, the more I like the series.
    Reading the manga enhanced my experience with the anime, and at the same time watching the anime enhanced my experience with the manga. I feel like they compliment each other in a weird way because they both have things that add onto each other (e.g. Yuri has development in the manga, but Megu-nee as a character was more impactful in the anime). Both of them offer different experiences that when combined, result in a (mostly) new, complete experience that is the Gakkougurashi franchise as a whole.
    TL;DR Gakkougurashi is awesome.
    PS: while I fully understand your point about the anime's messy/random/"out of nowhere solution" ending, IMO the manga is guilty of that as well, mainly because I feel like "it just so happened that the school was near a body of water which had the antidote". But that's just me being picky, the manga's ending at least makes some sense.

    Well I’m a little bit late to the party but I just enden Gakkou Gurashi a few days back (my first anime of 2020 by the way) and I’m absolutely agree with you with how awesome this anime is, it reminded me why I like anime, because back in 2017 I was completely uninterested by the medium, for me they were just “big eyes cartoons”, and just by a casual meme whitout context on a Videogame Facebook group I think “Meh, let’s give it a try”, the anime was Konosuba and to this day it still has a special place in my heart, but the one that show me the greatness of the anime was Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso (probably my favorite anime) and after that I started to seriously appreciate anime as an art form and the years past and I keep watching anime trying to find new and great stories, until like half a year back that things happened in my life that again make me lost interest in anime, I keep watching anime (Log Horizon or Parasyte we’re pretty good) but not with the same passion, until I found Gakkou Gurashi in my TH-cam recommend videos, it was a comparison of the OP’s so more or less I spoiled myself but I say “Well, let’s give it a shot, why not” and actually I never thought I would find such a masterpiece, the last two chapters got me really tense (specially because Kurumi and Miki we’re my favourite characters) and I almost cried at the end. You mention almost all the reason why I love this anime so much but for me specially, it reminds me why I started to watch anime and that’s something really special.
    PD: If only Gakkou Gurashi had more quiet and moments to really think deep about its themes it would be between my favourite series/movies of all time, but the way it is it’s great and probably I wouldn’t change it in any way

    I recently found this show after watching Girls' Last Tour. I was scrolling through different sites finding other shows similar to the style of said show. I didn't really expect anything from School Live because it seemed like another cute moe show, which isn't too bad by itself, but I gave it a shot. After the first episode, I instantly fell in love with the show. By this time, I finished both the dub and sub and caught up with the manga. I am so glad to have stumbled upon this show

    Weirdly you have many of the same sentiments as I towards the Anime. Argued similar talking points as well that I addressed on another video by Hiding In Public.
    Nevertheless, I agree that going blind is the only true way you should approach the anime. The bait and switch is one of my favorite treasured parts, even though I was decently spoiled as to whats to come initially by starting with the manga. Everything else was blind and honestly, I think Anime managed to evoke more emotions outta me compared to the manga. And I only just finished the manga an hour ago as of writing this. I'm uncertain how to feel about the ending. It isn't as 'clean slate' as Girls Last Tour's but it's better than them being well SPOILER,
    blasted to bits. The ost of the anime heavily managed to effect me during crucial plot points, without it, the manga felt void(?) it was still good regardless and intriguing but I wasn't as emotionally drawn in. Maybe because I'm still jaded by the emotional turmoil that was the last few episodes a day prior, but idk.
    Why is this the second essay I typed about this Anime/Manga in just one hour? I honestly have no idea, I guess I'm still clung on and I can't feel anything on how to conclude my emotions towards this gripping story. I'll prolly linger around neck of the internet for months as I did Girls Last Tour again.
    Going to binge watch all your videos tomorrow on this series because I need my closure lmao

    Just finished this series yesterday after starting it midweek, late to the party I know.
    I absolutely loved it and honestly, that damn dog and Megu-Nee absolutely broke me. All the scenes with Zombie Megu-Nee still at a desk with small humanity in her just made me cry.
    And the small tears of happiness I had at Toromaru being cured, literally became devastation inside 2 minutes, like, his traditional happy go lucky smile to Miki, followed by him going, I haven’t felt that way since Marley and Me.
    Anyway, one of my favourites and I went in to it without knowing much so the plot twists and sad moments caught me and I’d highly recommend it.

  • @ogre7699

    It's all the subtle shit that manages to make this all the more endearing. All the subtleties it gives you, could easily go unnoticed, like they did for me. I actually didn't notice anything was up, until the actual bait and switch, which really threw me off guard and just had me curious from that point on.
    It was only after it was pointed out that yeah, now I fucking see it, and Christ it was actually unsettling that I missed the warning signs. My only clue was that it fell under the genre of Horror when I stumbled across it. I didn't know why, until it pulled the ol' tablecloth pull and just made it so painfully clear, it was impossible to miss or ignore.
    I kept watching out of intrigue as to why it did this, and later it grew into genuine interest and investment. I fucking lost it by the final episode, with how well it managed to manipulate my emotions.
    I'm going to give this another watch sometime soon, especially to notice if there were any subtleties that I might've missed the first time. It's rare I remember the name of an anime using it's original Japanese title, but Gakkou Gurashi really stood out to me. Not just as an anime, but also a zombie apocalypse setting. They way they did everything was just.. Unique, even for anime.
    Gakkou Gurashi truly is one of a kind, and I'm going to suggest this to both zombie fans and anime fans alike from here on. Of course, I'll tell them the same thing. Do it blind for the best results.

  • @tbqui2529

    It's kinda funny how I discovered Gakkou Gurashi. One day, while I was searching for the next anime to watch on Animelon, I came across Gakkou Gurashi. At first, I recalled it being an Anime about cute girls fighting zombies with a shovel. I thought it would be cool to check it out. The first episode started, but there was just one issue. The subtitle was out of sync. Usually, when this happened, I would just call it bad luck and find another Anime to watch. However, somehow, inside of me, there was a voice begging me to watch it WITHOUT THE SUBTITLE.
    My Japanese level was just around N5 or N4 back then, but I still gave it a shot without any doubts. And, I was glad that I did. After going through all 12 episodes, I realized that Gakkou Gurashi had become one of my favorite anime. I could've missed this amazing series if I had been feeling a little lazy back then, but it was all thanks to that mysterious force pushing to watch it without the help of the translation.
    After that, I dug the manga and I was not disappointed. The events and dialogues that I barely understood while watching the anime became clear and logical. It was like experiencing the show for the first time again. I hardly read and finish any Manga, but Gakkou Gurashi has managed to capture me from start to end. All of this wouldn't have happened if I didn't brute-force the first episode that day.

  • @Ryusuta
    @Ryusuta 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I didn't realize that the ending was considered bad. It made perfect sense to me, and I think the last two episodes are the show's strongest.
    The way I see it, Yuki had insight into the zombies' patterns and memories because she was going through a microcosm of the same thing - trying to relive her past when it is now gone. She uses the PA system in order to trigger the zombies' memories and change what they're doing. The zombie students remember what it's like to be dismissed from the school and they shamble home out of their lingering memory of doing so at the end of the school day. Far from being "infamous," I think it's absolutely brilliant.
    To put it another way, one of the most popular Dr. Who episodes, "The Doctor Dances" (the second part to "The Empty Child," both from 2005) uses this exact same concept in the cold open. The Doctor is surrounded by a bunch of what are effectively zombies with the minds of children, and he demands that they go to their room and a loud and angry voice, which they then obey, because they - again - have the minds of children.
    While I agree with most of your thoughts on this show, this is the one major point I feel I have to differ on. I feel like Yuki's idea was the culmination of all the lessons she learned and had to overcome in itself. It was a brilliant moment, 100% earned.

    This show has mixed feelings for me, having watched the first episode I immediately jumped to the manga it was based on, which is a shame, because it sullied the show for me subsequently.
    I won't go into too much detail so as to keep your reccommendation as is, but the arc with the dog and immediately afterward was the strongest part of the manga and is changed entirely/cut out to a much less impressive showing for me personally.
    It pushed the group to breaking point, a breaking point specifically with Yuri that affected me greatly, in a way the anime didn't handle in the same way at all, handled so differently I felt a little disgusted with it.
    However I do agree that the visuals and audio production is something that's very impressive. I might give this a rewatch sometime, this video might have convinced me.
    You also gained a sub, so there is that too.

    • @UrbanTheMyth
      @UrbanTheMyth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First of all, thanks for the sub! Also, I really do want to discuss the manga in the near future as I like that it's very different. Going into the manga after watching the anime, I was worried I'd be reading the same thing. But I was pleasantly surprised, it was like seeing a different take on the same story. There's definitely a lot I feel was done better in the manga, not to mention, the art is fantastic as well. But I do prefer the anime, as some of my favorite moments aren't in the manga, and I prefer how certian relationships were handled in the anime. Either way, I love them both.

    Got to say all the named characters even the "deceased" all have some relatable elements crisis or not though personally I would say I identify most with Kurumi wanting to maintain that cool level headed champion of the group image on the outside seemingly out of a sense of duty even though on the inside she's just as terrified and melancholy as the others as for the others I find I can relate to that greatly being biggest of my siblings I basically an the protector of the family after my father
    I see Megu-nee as being a bit of an outsider given her societal role and age difference to the girls the one's she wishes to protect but also obtain the respect, admiration and maybe even acceptance of and will make even physical sacrifices to that end
    Kei and Miki were both understandably rather pessimistic about their situation while Miki acted out of indecisive or cowardly self preservation Kei acted on impulse and a desire for escape
    Miki would go on to be cynical but reluctantly optimistic questioning the rational behind Yuki's impulses but going along with them in the end
    Yuri as implied by being addressed by the others as Rii-san is like the big sister or eldest child of an absent parent house hold during a crisis she stoically takes up her roll as head of household despite wanting to break down or indulge remains steadfast in her duty lest those she cares about suffer which after seeing ep 10-11 we see that seeing her friends suffer strickens her with grief
    Yuki of course is the most relatable as she's that part of everyone that just wants to escape or dissociate from a crisis

    I loved Gakkou Gurashi. Not my favourite but a solid 9/10. I think it really managed to nail the tonal dissonance and merging it together in a way that keeps you on your toes and creates satisfying emotionally jarring moments.

    • @Person01234
      @Person01234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the advice I would give anyone when it comes to gakkou gurashi is to watch the ENTIRE first episode, and if it grabs you keep going. That being said, I don't think spoiling "the twist" is a fatal blow to the show. Most of the twists aren't there specifically to surprise you and although the first one is to catch you off guard, it can do that anyway even if you know the premise. I did go into it knowing the premise and I don't think it took anything away from the show, it's not the "wow so shock" moments that actually stick with you anyway, by themselves. The twist is a nice reveal for what was up to that point a perfectly generic moe SoL, but it's really not essential.
      Spoilers ahead. I do think it's very well done though, the show does throw all these hints at you that, if you've never seen anime before, SHOULD be flashing red lights with sirens going off, but if you actually do know anime tropes the "plain girl" teacher who nobody pays attention to, the fact that the girls are allowed to live in the school, the fact that you have a girl walking around with a shovel, the generic low-detail background characters and a number of other things, none of them stand out as particularly odd. But when you know the reveals, they make actual sense not just anime sense.
      Something a lot of people don't think about probably because they're from the west - The cross on the roof should immediately give away who is buried there. The only character we see evidence of being a christian is megu-nee, as she hangs a cross around her neck, and this is japan, christians are the exception rather than the rule. It may be that this is still a thing that is done for makeshift memorials in japan, but having googled pictures of japanese graveyards you don't really see any crosses so it's not some cultural import in general, and I don't think it's a coincidence that megu nee explicitly wears a cross and is buried with a cross.

    I’d actually also found this show by having the first episode spoiled to me (thanks, tvtropes), and it still made me relax just before the twist. • @UrbanTheMyth
      @UrbanTheMyth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the best way I've seen it described was that the amount of development yuuri received in the manga took away from other characters like kurumi and megu-nee. And I actually really like yuuri's more subtle development in the anime, she just doesn't stand out as much as the others.

    Yup just watched another one of these. That one divisive thing that happens at the very end that most people don't like really doesn't come out of nowhere though. It is foreshadowed all the way throughout the show. Even in episode one with the you know what on the soccer field. Not to mention the manga version of what happens is way less "deus ex machina" Meaning the writer initially knew how to make it work without a "deus ex machina" Granted I might be way more of a fanboy than you XD. Great video overall though. I wish more people would be passionate about this show. I just recently bought up to volume 9 of the manga so I can do a whole read through soon. Been over a year since I read up to 48. Had to wait forever since the manga went on Hiatus. Do you know why it actually went on Hiatus? I am to lazy to search that up. And fear spoilers lol.

    • @UrbanTheMyth
      @UrbanTheMyth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yeah, the method is consistent with the story's logic. What comes out of no where is HOW yuki figures out she needs to go to the broadcasting room. The fact she was told where to go by megunee in that moment is what bothered me. But as I said in the other video, I actually loved the ending otherwise.
      The reason it actually bothers me is because it affected everyone else's perspective on the show. Which left it falling short in scores and reviews. It was one of those tiny plot conveniences people focussed on while forgetting the otherwise, immense amount of detail all throughout the show leading up to that.
      With the manga, it's a lot more cleanly constructed, but you miss out on some of the best moments in the series if you ignore the anime. Also, not sure why it went on hiatus, but it's up to about chapter 66 I think, right now. The arc the manga's in at the moment is starting to get really interesting, so hope you get caught up soon!

    • @TehAnimeHQ
      @TehAnimeHQ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I can quite get why that aspect would be annoying. Can't say I was 100% okay with it myself. Love the ending otherwise too.
      While it did bother people. I think the show just changing so much is what hurt the show in retrospect. Most manga readers were really upset after episode 1 because of said changes. I know my friend complained that the show didn't explain how the outbreak happened completely and called that a plot hole. He wasn't a manga reader, but I just found that super silly.
      Yeah that I can mostly agree with. The anime is a bit more messy but it adds so much to the story overall. I personally as I said in another comment call it a companion series that develops the rest of the cast rather then an adaptation. I will get caught up when my order of manga comes in. Will read most from those and then the remaining chapters online.
      The only thing that really bothers me with Gakkou is the amount of super awkward fanservice.

    At one point I tried to figure out how Gakkou Gurashi succeeded in creating such a great athmosphere. The athmosphere in Gakkou Gurashi is often unic, and it can be described as "empty" and "ill". It's really enjoyable, but when I couldn't exactly tell why I felt this way, the thought kinda faded away.
    However, here you paid mind to the music. When you said something along the lines "even the more chipper songs feel like they are missing something or that they are just kind of off. While sounding distinctly up-beat, these tracks are kind of empty and simple" and one of the most fitting tracks for this statement started to play at the background, I succeeded in identifying the experience that I had while watching Gakkou Gurashi AND why I had that.
    The music is probably a huge reason for the experince, and I agreed with the way you explained it. Your statement guided my thoughts, and I figured out that while I watched Gakkou Gurashi, I felt like (1) something evil was coming closer, (2) the way the characters' denied many things gave off an unfriendly vibe and (3) Yuki keeping up her delusions felt powerful and a mix of other questionable themes... My experience contained other things too, and it's nice to feel that it existed cause you felt something kinda like that too when watching.

      The final character is one of the side characters that come up in the manga when they reach the college. I haven't read the manga in a while so I don't remember if she's thaaat important, but many of the side characters in that arc aren't all that important. I do have a video explaining some of the differences between the manga and anime, but I only really cover up to where the anime concludes.
      And despite preferring the anime, I do recommend the manga. It's incredibly different in many ways but it fleshes out the characters a bit more in some areas and the artwork is fantastic.

    Funny story about this anime. I saw a fanart where Sakura was depicted as a ghost. And I thought to myself " her to die". I just expected her to die at some point, I didn't expect she was dead from the beginning. Honestly, I think I was more surprised than if I hadn't seen the spoiler. This is the second time this has happened to me

    I do think the asspull solution is rather sweet in the moment, but it is absolutely an asspull.

    I feel like there is only one thing that is not so we'll done in this anime is the fact that everyone gets a side story except Yuuri. Kirumi lost her boyfriend/crush to the apocalypse, Mii had a dear friend kei(i don't believe they were friends girllies screamed sapphic) and she also had her story with toroumaru, mugune and yuki got their story. But all we know about yuuri is that she was in the gardening club, is the clubs president and that she takes care of the clubs resources. Kind of a missed chance. But tbh everything else is 10/10
