Sorry for all my rambling ahead, but this video was just so good to not say how I feel about it and about Gakkou Gurashi. I found your channel just randomly and I will be subscribing after this. I really love this show, and I feel you expressed most of my feelings as to why this is a great adaptation. I personally also really like the manga, but read the 30 chapters that the anime covered after seeing the show. I can't ever express how much I like this show to most people, because they tend to just write me off and ignore what I say. The only thing I feel this video missed (even if you kind of said it at the very end) was I wish you would have mentioned the contrast between the manga and anime much more. The Manga tends to focus on the violent aspect much more often then the anime, and the anime tends to focus on the cute moe slice of life comedy aspect much more. Considering on of the major themes of Gakkou is all about contrasting the moe esthetic to a much darker world. It is interesting to me that the writer even did this outside of the show by making the anime and manga contrast each other. It literally forces you to be open minded about adaptations and even look at it thematically outside of the contained story. I know talking about meta narrative can feel like reaching, but as the original writer worked on the staff of the anime adaptation it is pretty clear to me his intentions. So personally I like to feel like both these stories intertwine and the few "plot holes" really aren't there when connecting all the information together from both the manga and anime. It makes the manga and anime companion series to each other and if you miss either you miss a ton of character development and information one way or the other. It makes Gakkou Gurashi as a series really hold much more depth then a simple panel by panel adaption. PS I do agree Yuuri was done better in the manga, but I feel that is okay considering she was leagues better in the manga in comparison to everyone else. So the adaptation really solidified all the other characters too. After experiencing both going back to certain scene straight up gives me chills.
OK, this was a fantastic video. It has pretty much perfectly illustrated a point that I know I have thought about for a long time. This is the most concise, detailed, and in depth look at this I have heard thus far. On top of that it was just a good, fun to watch video that never missed a beat. I've never seen any of your content before and I just happened to stumble across this, but I am happy I did. I do not watch a lot of anime (although Gakkou Gurashi and Girls' Last Tour are by *far* my favorites, not only peaking as my favorite anime, but also getting close to my favorite pieces of media in general, and you seem to talk about both.), but now I am going to have to look through all of your videos. If they are even half as good as this I am in for a ride. Thank you for making this, it was fantastic.
Thanks a lot man, I appreciate the kind words. It's funny you mentioned girls last tour as I also have a video in the works on that. It's mostly on the manga so I recommend taking a look at that if you haven't, already.
I really love the school live anime , a week ago at lunch I made my friend watch episode 1 during lunch with my other 3 friends (including people in the background wanted to watch) and due to little time and about 5 advertisements it took us nearly a week to finish episode 1, by the time it showed the scene yuki was talking to herself " WHAT" it's such a good series but my only friend with crunchyroll of her phone is gonna be moving away soon so I'm most likely not gonna finish rewatching the anime with friends
There was no scene that turned me into a puddle of cold sweat like when the dog gets lost and finds megu-nee in the basement……that…that broken music box man it…it’s was fucking nightmare fuel. Something straight up out of a silent hill boss fight
Also the glass vase contains a daisy which symbolizes innocence and purity and when the vase breaks, it could represent Megu-nee's innocence shattering
I posted a comment on one of your other videos earlier today, but i finished this whole series in one sitting. I absolutely loved it. I haven't watched this video yet, but this series is in my top 5 favorites no question now.
Honestly I only have ONE problem with both the anime and the manga The windows. Like, I know it's apocalypse and everything, but why every single window has been smashed ?!
The main thing that kept bothering me again and again during first episode was that even though Yuki went to class and everyone was in their classes, the school life’s members didn’t seem to be attending any classes. It was very disturbing because if it was a normal cute anime, they would explain right away why the members aren’t going to classes. But the fact that they didn’t was already enough to make us realize that something isn’t right with Yuki.
the manga is finished now. i'm going to disagree with him on this. i think the manga is a better experience when it comes to characters and story. the only thing i think the anime did better (putting aside media differences obviously) was the episode 1 reveal of yukis mental state.
Great video my dude, left my response in the Subreddit for ya! Keep up the quality content and I hope to see more Gakkou Gurashi content but maybe geared towards certain manga moments, such as when Kurumi goes home or the idea of a bigger powerhouse starting it all.

Hope to see more of these videos in the future! PS: Would you be making a video on the Live Action when it comes out?
Gakkou Gurashi!/School Live! is one of my top favorite animes and one of few i would consider rewatching over and over again. The characters are very likable, the art style is cutesy but still fits the zombie apocalypse survival plot and genre, the details, good story plot, and it's one of the animes that can make you cry and care for the characters. By the way, was is the music you used 05:00?
I recently finished the anime and started the manga (where the anime left off ) and it's rely good and I feel that they're basically on equal terms. I would love to see how they adapt the rest if they do because it's pretty cool to see both aspects on how the story is told.
Well, I have to disagree with you for this one. I watched the anime first, but I go to the manga just after, because I wanted to know what will happen to the girls after the end of the anime and... I find the manga way better than the anime. Don't get me wrong, I like some aspects of the anime (the first episode, Megunee's reveal...) But some other just make me... Hurg. The dog is ruining the anime for me. He has way to much screen time, and I have the impression he totally changed Miki's character, and not for the best. At the end she cared more about him than Kurumi! The pool episode was very unnecessary also, it was really in the "every anime need a beach/pool episode so let's do it"! The anime also left a part off Miki's story in the commercial center with Kei. When I watched the anime, Key seemed really egoiste to me, like girl, don't leave Miki like that! But when I read the manga, I understood her way better, and I liked more Also, the ending in the anime is ...meh
I felt that the anime made a great job, they explained the same story with a different pace and point of veiw. Personally I like more the anime maybe because I watched first but I still think both are great.
Guess I'm some years late to this video but I just watched the anime the other day and was looking for some others' thoughts on it. Think I'll have to try out the manga after all. I didn't really think of Yuuki being told what to do in the final episodes were a "plot hole" or a reach; to me it was most always what Megu-nee di for her; being her sort of subconscious survival instinct come to life, more or less. She's not always seemed the brightest, and most of her delusions may seem an overall detriment, however I think it's also her way of coping with the dangers she knows she must push through and to give her the confidence to do so. It might have been her idea all along to go to the intercom to get the zombies to leave, but choosing to hear it from a guardian figure that she trusted would inspire far more bravery than she knew she had on her own at the time.
There's definitely a little changes that wasn't talked about that gets me wondering if it cost Gakkou Gurashi a second season that being the small issue of who found Yuki's letter if you watch the last episode all the way through you see Yuki's letter being picked up by a girl with glasses manga readers will of course know who she is and who really finds the letter and the cataclysmic events that transpired as a result
About Kurumi I have an idea why she is so able to kill other zombies but now Megu-nee. If a zombie apocalypse did happen I would put myself in the role of Kurumi’s, I don’t really care to kill a zombie (because of my laid back attitude) but I probably would care deep down, but I would hold it in so that I don’t hesitate, perhaps the same is with Kurumi, she holds in her hesitation because her desire to survive overpowers the morality. The reason it’s different with Megu-nee is because she was dear to her, if I had to kill a zombified dog (which was mine) I’d struggle because of how much they meant to me and how my morality kicks in, it’s easier to kill other zombies when you don’t know them.
I won't lie I didn't watch this video, I mostly listened to it and everything you mentioned makes sense to me and makes me more excited to continue with the Manga. More importantly Shabu needs to get out of his hole and make more content since he did like half the video with you. Also what's next months video gonna be?
Great video, even if I am commenting two year later,lol. I'm someone that read the manga first so I prefer the manga way more but I do like the anime. My small problem was with ep.9. it's a post-apocalyptic scenario anime and they add a pool episode. To me it felt like a waste of time and episode on something that only doesn't really progress anything good. Like filler it was a big stop on everything that's happening episode (after finding out about the book) just to give miki a small moment with the dog that should've been dead already near the end of the ep, see these girls play in the water with bathing suits and have all these weird shots, just to sell merch and to appease the some of the pervs. I don't mind fan service but it just felt really unnecessary to me. Especially since you can see these girls in their underwear more than once but that wasn't enough. I still like the anime and the dog was adorable but it did bugged me after the book was reveal. ^^;
not really, they made a good point that after learning about the secret of the school, that they should just relax first before making a move based on the new info, also the theme of "living" instead of surviving is prevalent to both the manga and anime. a small break from reality is always good in any stressful environment ( especially their case).
@@jtamiing559 Im sorry but no, that's what the Sports Festival was for and the small "after school" activities they did through out the day. Heck they even did a test of courage. To have small breaks from the "reality" they were in. But in this case, You don't learn something as big of an importance as the emergency respond manual that megu-nee had kept, have Karumi be extremely upset and shock about it but then stop everything to play in the water cause of stress. Especially when in the manga karumi gets bitten in the same chapter that they found the book. Sorry but it makes no sense and the tension they had brakes for just for fan service. Just cause the anime director gave it a "reason" doesn't make it good.
@@kwhitepearl changes in the anime are necessary because of how it is as the medium since the manga wasn't finished so they focused on other details different to the manga and introduced miki right of the bat. in the pool and shopping scene was their to remind the audience their still girls who still want to live and have their necessities met ( yes, it doubled as fan service but wasn't the main point, you focused too much on those small details that you missed the main point) if you finished the manga then u know how important yuki's role is to their survival and well being, all those activities are their to keep yuki's delusion alive and keep their spirits up (the test of courage doubled as a supply run and to satisfy yuki). different, but yuki's role stayed the same in the manga and anime, she didn't know the secret but knew tensions were rising since kurumi was mad and yuri wanted the full details since kurumi thinks megu intentionally didn't tell them of the emergency Manuel. when they literally cooled their heads, that is when they made a rational plan to enter the basement.
@@jtamiing559 Dude,I understand they need to rush it a bit cause it was only a 12 ep show. So I don't really mind the changes they did for Miki. But again the tension at the beginning wasn't even there when rescuing her cause we already know she's ok and with the group cause she's telling us the story. You also don't seem to understand that to me they wasted an already short anime with a ep. that wasn't needed. You keep saying that they did that to show that they are still girls at the end of the day and that they needed small break from reality but don't realize that they didn't need a scene like that in the manga to show that. They showed it in different ways (The sports festival, other festivals that they did after karumi got better which they skipped and the test of courage. there's more but I can't remember at the moment.) And We were still able to understand that they were at the end of the day still young girls dealing with a lot of stress and trauma without having a pool scene. And yeah I'm focus on that cause while I enjoyed the anime, that's the ep. that bugs me about the anime. Cause it wasn't a necessitate like when they went to the mall. Which is understandable that they were trying out clothes, shoes and look at music stuff cause it was something "normal" to do while searching for more supplies. But the pool was just a Fan service scene that stopped everything in it's track and was giving a reason to be there (the dog/miki relationship) even though it doesn't need to be. You also say "to make a rational plan" when in the manga they were able to talk it out real quick. karumi was even able to clam down when yuuri stopped her and when miki told them her reason for showing them the book and made a plan then and there cause Miki already skimmed through the book. Yuki wasn't even in the room cause she left after Miki lied to her about reading a scary story but was able to encourage miki to talk to the others cause she can kinda tell she was troubled. But she didn't feel the tension till she came back to check up on them and by then Karumi was already heading to the basement. And if you read and finish the manga also, you would know that Yuki doesn't stay in her delusions when they start leaving the school and things get worst. And since she's naive, once she started realizing things a bit (especial when yuuri starts having distressing moments and remembers her little sister.) she continues to play the role as the character that's cheerful even when things look grim. Cause she starts to notice that if she doesn't the whole groups well-being does go off a bit. Also you can't say that because the manga wasn't finish that they focus on other detail things when in reality the manga was already volumes ahead and they were already heading out of the school when this was announced to be made in 2014 with some scripts from the manga writer. Which is why it's crazy that the director choose to wasted an ep. on a fan service scene when the series is already crammed as it is. And omits and adjusts some important plot pieces, including most of Volume 5. It's whatever though, the anime was still enjoyable and if anything it's was a good advertisement for the source material which is the manga and it gives me a reason to recommend the manga to my friend. If they ever make a season two I will be watching it but since The Blu-ray sales for the first season were poor, and anime usually aren't made of concluded manga. A second season is unlikely.
@@kwhitepearl agree about it being unnecessary, but that's what most fan services are. Unnecessary. However, there is atleast a growth in that episode, that is Taroumaru beginning to open up with Miki, considering Taroumaru was dead in the mall in the manga.
I’m honestly ambivalent towards the dog, but I’ve never forgiven Miki for waffling over saving Best Girl only get motivated over saving him. Dammit Miki do you value that mutt over Kurumi? And thank you very much for another good video on GG.
The manga was good, but the anime made me feel genuine horror towards the end. The lead up to seeing Megumi in zombie form, and taromaru disappearing 😭 it made me want to throw up but I loved it
I hated that they added the dog. SO much. Yeah, I do understand why they did it now that you brought it up... but it still left a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth. They spent a lot of time with the dog, making us love him and really care for him. And then they, not only kill him, but HAVE US WATCH HIM DIE, bury him and so forth. As someone who has a dog, who reminds me A LOT of the dog in the anime...it made what originally was a nice experience instantly turn to a sour one. Yes. The anime did what it wanted to, in pulling my emotions. But I felt they abused it. "we have a cute dog, lets hit it home that life sucks" they...they didn't need to do that. We already know life sucks with the teacher and the friend. When an ending leaves that much of a negative impact on you...you'll never want to watch it again. I was really happy to read that the dog was a quick one done in the manga.
@@maple._.leaves But would you say theyre more fan service than that filler pool episode? The manga version did have an early Miki sexual vibe tho but im glad that it didnt last long.

I've rewatched this dozens of times, it's definitely one of my favourite anime-dissection videos.
Ngl Miki in the manga is much better than her anime counterpart in my opinion. She is a savage.
There was no scene that turned me into a puddle of cold sweat like when the dog gets lost and finds megu-nee in the basement……that…that broken music box man it…it’s was fucking nightmare fuel. Something straight up out of a silent hill boss fight
Huh, I didn't know just how much it changed from manga to anime. Here I just thought the anime was amazing lol.
After watching this good video...
Still waiting for Season 2 University Arc soon, but i have to wait for more in the manga xD
22:30 except it makes perfect sense, because Megu nee isn't actually her delusion
YYYEEEEESSSS ANOTHER GAKKOU GURASHI VIDEO!!!
I love it sooo much
Im so mad i got sucked into this and there isnt a season 2
Honestly I only have ONE problem with both the anime and the manga
The windows.
Like, I know it's apocalypse and everything, but why every single window has been smashed ?!
the explosion maybe?
The main thing that kept bothering me again and again during first episode was that even though Yuki went to class and everyone was in their classes, the school life’s members didn’t seem to be attending any classes. It was very disturbing because if it was a normal cute anime, they would explain right away why the members aren’t going to classes. But the fact that they didn’t was already enough to make us realize that something isn’t right with Yuki.
Major respect for this video!
I’m a dog lover seeing the dog eating and drinking water then dies hit me hard that I want to hit my head in the wall
I'm just sad that they shafted Yuuri (best girl) in the anime. Wish they explored her like they did in the manga.
Thanks for this vid. This video articulates my thought well and adds more points
Found this from reddit. Did not expect you to go do in depth. Nice work! Gained a subscriber
Ive been waiting for this
Good to see you putting in work
the manga is finished now.
i'm going to disagree with him on this. i think the manga is a better experience when it comes to characters and story. the only thing i think the anime did better (putting aside media differences obviously) was the episode 1 reveal of yukis mental state.
legitimately found your channel through gakkou gurashi and you videos are really high quality!
Great video my dude, left my response in the Subreddit for ya!
Keep up the quality content and I hope to see more Gakkou Gurashi content but maybe geared towards certain manga moments, such as when Kurumi goes home or the idea of a bigger powerhouse starting it all.
Hiya roomi! How are ya?
Also yes, more GG videos please
If you wanna talke about how change can be good from manga to anime.
Take a look at K-on from manga to anime
I haven't gotten to K-on yet, unfortunately. But I have seen Digi's video on this exact topic.
@@UrbanTheMyth oh didn't realise he made a video about it.
I remember a couple of other anime being enhanced transitioning from manga/VN. But having troubke remembering their name.
But like you video its pretty good
this was very nice ! splendid video !
Just saw it all on hidive in one day. I wasn't expecting to feel so sad but dang this anime was good.
WE NEED SESAON 2 PLZ GOD OF THE ANIME
11:10 I literarily cried when i first seen her in her zombie state ,she was my favorite.
HOLY HELL DID YALL SEE THAT EDITING YOOOOOO WOOOO WEEE THAT IS SOME EDITING RIGHT THERE OMFG HAVE YALL SEEN THAT KIND OF EDITING IM DEAD INSIDE
I cried at Taroumaru’s death
Thanks for the video! I've been dying to see another of your review kind of vids :D they were all so enjoyable! Especially when you talk about Gakkou Gurashi! Anyway, good job on the video! Hope to see more of these videos in the future! PS: Would you be making a video on the Live Action when it comes out?
oh yeah, I would definitely talk about the live action adaptation. I keep forgetting that's gonna happen lol
love your channel man
Gakkou Gurashi!/School Live! is one of my top favorite animes and one of few i would consider rewatching over and over again. The characters are very likable, the art style is cutesy but still fits the zombie apocalypse survival plot and genre, the details, good story plot, and it's one of the animes that can make you cry and care for the characters.
By the way, was is the music you used 05:00?
Thank you Kanye, very cool!
I LOVE GAKKOU!!! it is cool show
That's wonderful, Samuel
Really great video!
I just finished watching the anime now for manga
We never get to see megu eyes as a zombie seeing her as a zombie broke my fucken heart to sweet and kind to dead cold rotten slow corpse of her
I recently finished the anime and started the manga (where the anime left off ) and it's rely good and I feel that they're basically on equal terms. I would love to see how they adapt the rest if they do because it's pretty cool to see both aspects on how the story is told.
I just wann re-live old school days ( but in anime world);
Well, I have to disagree with you for this one.
But when I read the manga, I understood her way better, and I liked more
Also, the ending in the anime is ...meh
Completely agreed! The anime ruined miki and yuuri. Also fuck the dog!
Mam... that was fucking awesome, love your videos and this one was GOOD as hell. I want to read the mangá and re-watch the anime now ... again xP
I would rather have the dog that has been through the whole story die than a dog that I barely knew die in a story.
I felt that the anime made a great job, they explained the same story with a different pace and point of veiw.
Personally I like more the anime maybe because I watched first but I still think both are great.
Tbh if I was in a zombie outbreak I would be a yuki and be fucking crazy
Thanks for this video
👑
I don't like to read, but this anime might force me to I want to know more and see more ;-;
There's definitely a little changes that wasn't talked about that gets me wondering if it cost Gakkou Gurashi a second season that being the small issue of who found Yuki's letter if you watch the last episode all the way through you see Yuki's letter being picked up by a girl with glasses manga readers will of course know who she is and who really finds the letter and the cataclysmic events that transpired as a result
I still play the Opening when I feel sad
But war never changes
I watched anime twice and read manga once. I wish there will be season 2.
what is that lovely song at 5:00 ?
: -)

Here ya go
thanks a lot my man!
no problem, by the way, I used a lot of music from AcesToAces, in this video
aah good to know! excellent music choice ^___^
I love this anime and manga so much but I really struggle with re watch / re reads because of how upset it makes me :s
The reason it’s different with Megu-nee is because she was dear to her, if I had to kill a zombified dog (which was mine) I’d struggle because of how much they meant to me and how my morality kicks in, it’s easier to kill other zombies when you don’t know them.
seeeeason 2
Taroumaru is best boi.
I won't lie I didn't watch this video, I mostly listened to it and everything you mentioned makes sense to me and makes me more excited to continue with the Manga. More importantly Shabu needs to get out of his hole and make more content since he did like half the video with you.
Also what's next months video gonna be?
KLK probs
Also watch muh video damnit
Great video, even if I am commenting two year later, lol.
I'm someone that read the manga first so I prefer the manga way more but I do like the anime.
My small problem was with ep.9. it's a post-apocalyptic scenario anime and they add a pool episode. To me it felt like a waste of time and episode on something that only doesn't really progress anything good. Like filler it was a big stop on everything that's happening episode (after finding out about the book) just to give miki a small moment with the dog that should've been dead already near the end of the ep, see these girls play in the water with bathing suits and have all these weird shots, just to sell merch and to appease the some of the pervs. I don't mind fan service but it just felt really unnecessary to me. Especially since you can see these girls in their underwear more than once but that wasn't enough. I still like the anime and the dog was adorable but it did bugged me after the book was reveal. ^^;
not really, they made a good point that after learning about the secret of the school, that they should just relax first before making a move based on the new info, also the theme of "living" instead of surviving is prevalent to both the manga and anime. a small break from reality is always good in any stressful environment ( especially their case).
Yet no season 2
Let's Don't Forget The Puppy At The Last Episode Right? There's Another Puppy At Tamomarous Resting Place✝️
What happened to that puppy on the manga?🐶
Song at 5:00 ?
nvm found it, but good work man loving it
I’m honestly ambivalent towards the dog, but I’ve never forgiven Miki for waffling over saving Best Girl only get motivated over saving him. Dammit Miki do you value that mutt over Kurumi?
And thank you very much for another good video on GG.
love you more.
The manga was good, but the anime made me feel genuine horror towards the end. The lead up to seeing Megumi in zombie form, and taromaru disappearing 😭 it made me want to throw up but I loved it
why this didn't have a second season :
Since you liked gakkou gurashi I wonder if you've watched houseki no kuni? Its not a horror anime/manga but its a very sad and tragic story
Rosario vampire season 2 review?
song at 2:33?
A remixes version of Gurashi’s episode 4 ED, “we took each other’s hand”
Season 2 👎
Bad live action movie adaptation 👍
What were they thinking?!
The only think that is more better is Shoujo Ai.
I was really happy to read that the dog was a quick one done in the manga.
first
anime had too much fan service and made it feel more for kids at certain points
@@maple._.leaves how so 🤔?
@@maple._.leaves But would you say theyre more fan service than that filler pool episode?
The manga version did have an early Miki sexual vibe tho but im glad that it didnt last long.
what fan service its just 1 episode
