My favorite tip from this video is the fact that you emphasize that we should be dressing for the person, season, circumstance we have right now… And not focusing so much on our dream state. I’ve taken that advice and applied to other areas of my life and it makes a world of difference!

I love it too! I'm currently a 22 y/o student who lives a casual life style. I don't have any use for wearing skirts, heels, and dresses for day-to-day life. So I just add elements of my "dream style" now

I have learned that making my bed and getting fully dressed before leaving my bedroom in the morning, helps me to start my day with purpose. It sets the tone for my entire day. I homeschool my four children, but I still dress as if I'm going to work. Because I am! They see me putting in effort and I think it helps them also to feel motivated. And if we get an unexpected visitor, I'm not ashamed to answer the door. Even if it is just for an Amazon package.

I have a lot of respect for that. I’m a SAHM now with only a baby and I find it hard to make up the bed in the “mornings” (whatever morning is anymore, LOL). Good for you. I’m hoping when my sleep time gets normal(ish) I can do the same.

Thank you for this video! I am a work-at-home empty nester who loves fashion. When I go out, even to just the grocery store, I dress as if it were an event, not that I wear an evening gown and heels just to buy groceries. It lifts my mood when I wear my favorite pieces, wear jewelry, and do my hair and makeup. It feels so depressing to wear worn-out loungewear and keep your hair unkempt at all times. I take a shower at night to wash off the daytime grime and choose my outfit, my jewelry and handbag for the next day to save time in the morning. In the summer, I always take a light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned places that feel like the Arctic. 💕

  • @janeburkhart4051

I don't buy lounge wear so that's never an option for me. I pick my outfit before going to bed and set it out so that I get dressed first thing in the morning (I shower at night to help facilitate this). Love your winter white outfit!

Some challenges with dressing for hot and humid weather include preparing for the extreme disparity between the outside temperature and the extremely cold AC inside and also the effect of humidity on natural fabrics such as cotton and linen. I can never go sleeveless or wear sandals in the summer because the AC inside buildings is so cold and I do not want to look crumpled when I arrive! I look forward to your suggestions!

I realized as you said, " . . .it will likely change" that what made me feel great (colors, silhouettes) in my 20's are the same aesthetic that makes me feel good now at 60. My "colors" have shifted a bit with added gray hair, but the "lines" I choose over and over that feel good have remained the same. So interesting!

I, too, discovered capsules by accident. I had been creating them for travel---every piece must match everything else, limited number of shoes, paired down jewelry and cosmetics---and then one day decided to do the same for my work clothes. By pulling out a "work collection" and hanging it on a rack by itself, I was able to "see" combinations I couldn't visualize when the office-appropriate pieces were mixed in together with my "too casual" or "too sexy" clothes. I also learned which items and styles were the most versatile for my every day life. It wasn't until a few years later that I learned these curated collections were known by some as "capsule wardrobes". I've been a student and a fan of "encapsulating" ever since!

I just ran across a woman who complained that no matter how she dressed, she never looked chic or elegant. I advised her to look at her hair. Like you have found, I have found that if my hair isn't right, my outfit isn't going to look good. If your hair is in bad condition or the style is frumpy, the chicest outfit in the world isn't going to look chic.

These are such fantastic tips! I tried the capsule wardrobe for December and I called it my holiday wardrobe. I gathered my Reds and greens and both casual and dressy. I picked out bottom step matched and isolated them in one part of my closet and it was extraordinary really helpful. As soon as I would wash them I would hang them right back up in the same spot. I felt like I got a lot of use out of those garments in a way that I wouldn't have otherwise. I liked not having to think hard about what I was going to wear four different occasions since they were all hanging together and I could ignore the rest of my closet. So as soon as January came around I did the same thing with completely different items. Now I'm already forming ideas of what to do for February and I will bring the red back out and also some pink sand burgundy's. This one change has made a huge difference in having more fun getting dressed each day!

Hi Audrey, all great tips as always, I love your relaxed style although my style is nothing like yours. I am a ‘romantic/natural’ and warm spring colours suit me best. I have forced myself to keep up my styling throughout the pandemic as it makes my life (which is so transformed like so many of us) feel more normal. I do also give myself ‘days off’ from styling so that I won’t go out walking that day perhaps and wear just jeans and a top and focus on creative tasks at home... knitting is my new hobby, losing myself in great books, playing my sax, writing songs, sewing etc. These simple and enjoyable activities go some way to compensate for some of the social activities I have lost currently, and crave. I use a colour wheel to help me choose separates and basics that work together, I lay my outfit on the bed and then because I’m a bit ‘extra’ I always like jewellery. My style is very vintage, so I love a good brooch, and choosing what to wear is another creative pleasure. These things are keeping me sane. Thanks for your lovely calm energy and ever evolving approach to wardrobe management xx

I watch your videos for tips and reminders and they are always helpful. I see that your style applies to your home as well - brilliant! The key to my capsule wardrobe: I am retired. I combined some of my career clothes (which are classics) into my present wardrobe... kept more casual fitted suit jackets and ditched skirts in favor of close fitting knit pants, leggings or dark jeans... and have dresses and skirts for going out and summer. Only one pair of heels now (I'm tall). Cotton/spandex, cashmere, merino and high tech down alternatives for non-bulky layering in New England. Silk or cotton scarves. Hats to shield my face. A Burberry raincoat from 1984, a Dior coat from 2004, a Ferragamo bag from 1980 still work - simple and classic. I choose a flattering silhouette, quality, and stretch, so my worn out clothes look great for painting and yardwork (!). Even at home, during COVID, I dressed nicely. My attitude is part of my look: I have always been active and fit (former equestrian), eaten well, and taken excellent care of my skin (sunscreen & dermatologist) and styled my undyed hair for its texture and my face shape... so that I can feel good about myself and remain physically independent. Very fair skin = covered up!

So excited to see content pop up post-holidays! Happy New Year, and I hope you and your family are doing well. Was so scary to see that you had Covid after the holiday. My mother got it as well after having lunch with some friends. Hope you're fully healed, extra positive thoughts coming your way :)
I couldn't agree more with your notion of having the go-to, dream wardrobe, and making the effort to 'get dressed' (as I sit here in my lounge wear lol). I've been working from home now for 2 years and during the cooler/colder months got very comfy in lounge pants, but now make the effort to put on something more 'real world appropriate'. The pandemic, and hitting a certain major life-milestone (gasp, 50!) have seen my wardrobe soften a bit. I'm leaning towards more casual and comfortable wear, but trying to also keep a certain level of sophistication as things change.
Thanks for the reminder that 'showing up' matters to how you feel, and that what feels good will change over time and our wardrobes can match those changes and still look and feel fantastic.

This video is so relevant to me, I had to retire on health grounds during the first on lockdown (I'm in UK) and immediately most of my clothes became redundant as I dressed for comfort only, wearing the same few favs on a daily basis. I seem to lose all previous interest in clothes, yet still bought them and my wardrobe is now overflowing, with no clear plan about putting outfits together. It just feels too much effort to get it all out and try on! I know I do feel better when I look smart, and previously I always ensured I did, I think being constantly at home for so long has had a huge effect on how I feel about dressing well. Coming to terms with having to stop work and dealing with the effects of the pandemic has been huge to deal with, but I really want to try and improve by Spring (my favourite time of year) and find that interest in clothes that I used to have. Your words and idea have inspired me, so thank you Audrey! X

Audrey - just love your gentle speaking voice and calm presentation. You are so correct about a capsue wardrobe, I have lived overseas and travelled alot and can manage anything with two items to cover legs (trousers or skirt) and three tops, and that fashion faux pax - a pashmina as it takes no room to pack and if you buy the pure wool and silk is really warm. For shoes I take a pair for the day and flip flops for best. This tiny wrdrobe only works if every item works together. i never take pyjamas, just and old pair of culottes and a top - then if needed they can be worn as daywear!

Another of your thoughts-- clarity--yes it is super easy for me to pull on a pair of yoga pants and a long sleeve T shirt. I want that same clarity to grabbing better choices

I love your videos...your quietness and gentleness make me feel relaxed... I agree with you on hot weather! I can find sweaters to wear but when it gets hot, I get lost... I'm also trying to lose weight so that doesn't help... Thanks for being here!!

Oh I can’t wait for the summer stuff! In new Zealand the climate is mild to hot and I also like to use my summer clothes as a year round base, adding more layers as required as day to day weather is so changeable 🌹🌹🌹

Great video, really enjoyed your point of view on this topic. My favorite time of year is August through February. I dread dressing for the warmer months, too! I have a lot of things in my closet that I wore in my twenties, and now, in my thirties and with two kids, they just don’t make sense to me anywhere. I don’t want to be wasteful and buy a lot of clothes I won’t wear so I just sort of make do with what I have but the clothes aren’t me anymore.

Audrey, I hope you had a beautiful start to your new year. This video has solidified the tone in my wardrobe right now. I just did yet another mini closet clean out. It’s just like you’v mentioned “it’s going to take time” but I’m very excited about the process. I live in the hot dry desert 🏜 of California and I only wear cotton during the hot months (which is a lot of the year 🤪). Every layer is cotton. I like dresses & sandals or a comfy Converse. So I have already started to be on high alert 🚨 for anything that will fit with all my current pieces. I also always try to find a good 👒 straw hat. I’m looking forward to your next video. 💕 Thank you.

Welcome back in the new year, Audrey! My "bare minimum" the last few years have been scarves. Even putting one on with a t-shirt and jeans, suddenly makes the look more intentional, like I put in some effort. Still, it's so easy ;-)

I thought I just found your channel, but while binge watching, I see I've been here before and already watched some of your older videos. I'm so glad I found you again! I hit the subscribe button fast. Your whole style philosophy is parallel to mine, but watching your videos and reading your blog reminded me a closet and home edit is needed ASAP. I will be going through my closet and home AGAIN soon, while living by the same four words you use Classic, Modern, Elegant, Relaxed - Refined is the completed look I go for, but I need to edit out impulse purchases and items given to me. The local donation store is going to love me! :-) I will be mentioning your name and channel in one of my upcoming videos for sure!

I had my hair cut into a pixie style two months ago….I cried for the first day or two because it was sooooo short. But got used to it growing out a bit and now I feel great every day. I have to pull my hair back at work and it just looked awful….think Grannie from the Beverly Hillbillies. Has increased my style level to days when I worked in fashion.

Yesterday I sorted out a big drawer of sweaters - a task that was overdue. After the diminished social activities of the past 2 years, it was much easier to identify the items I knew I'd never want to wear again. And in trying on everything, some very attractive new combinations seemed to magically come together, making me wonder why I hadn't thought of them before. I so look forward to wearing them! So I found value in not using these clothes much for a couple of years and then getting a fresh look at them. Your video seemed to reinforce this for me. Shopping your own closet is real!
