@@strangenate27 Their albums have been kind of formulaic for a while. It's fine, they've been around for more than 30 years, they're allowed to be in a phase of their careers where new albums are just an excuse for a global tour :P. Live, they still absolutely kill it.
Flew to Chicago last October and saw 311 2 nights back to back at the HOB , had our own little VIP section and they played blue the first night the. Transistor the 2nd. Probably the 30th time seeing them and they’re the best band in the world. They’ve been playing for 30 years, doesn’t happen by accident. Legendary band.
This song is about an acid trip. Keep rocking! "I remember pine trees and the coat of many colors. I was nineteen. I'd do anything. Shit like that now scares me but I'd like to do it again. It was Independence day. I've seen the other side and I say. Oh, I've been insane And I won't ever be the same."
It's also brilliant in how it uses 4th of July as a way to describe the acid trip as a sort of Independence Day - breaking away into a new awareness/realm. The music video makes it all come together even better.
Also the drummer, Chad Sexton doesn't get enough credit for how absolutely skilled he was. watch a live version of "Applied Science" and it'll blow your mind. Not on a Danny Carey level but without a doubt one of the best drummers that no one has really heard of.
I preter their first 3 albums, little harder and edgier. before they smoked pot all the time, lol. saw them for the first tike in 1994 on long island in a place the size McDonald's. Snuck in with a fake ID. still have the cassette bootleg of that concert. seen them 27 times total. grew up with them, still one of my favorites .
You guys might like "Freeze Time" by 311, I'd love to see your reaction to that. Their catalog is so extensive that I could think of a million others but that is stuck in my head right now LOL.
This entire Grassroots album is low key legendary. Cover to cover raw groove.
It's jam band meets rap rock meets funk meets jazz in a way I've never heard on another album of any artist.
The rapping verse that started off the song was actually the lead singer Nick. The 2nd rapping verse was SA the DJ that was rapping on the song Down.
311 Day awaits 👽
Dude theyre still killing it since the 90s.saw em last year
I wouldn't say the newest album was killing it and I love 311 but they missed the mark. Hopefully the next one is better.

Was? Why the past tense? 311 are still together with their original lineup so Chad is still in the band and he's still excellent.
Deep thoughts..............good advice.....U2 are pretty kool.....
In the end, revenge sends into the defendant
I hope you guys can see 311 live one day. I finally did last fall and they melted my face off!
Nick Hex is the one singing and SA is the dude rapping. I love this group, so many memories. Music always brings me back to a certain time in my life.
Nick raps the first verse...and sings most of the chorus.
