However because Michael had dropped out of college to join it might have earmarked him as prime officer material but he would have got that all on his own as leading a platoon is more likely to put you in danger than shield you from it. Michael wanted to make his own way in the world and although it hurt Vito as every father wants to protect their son I think Vito probably respected Michael the most out of all his children

21:09 - in case you missed it, the guy who shows up at the hospital is Enzo, the young man who the Godfather arranged to marry the daughter of the baker in order to stay in the U.S. Also, one of my favorite details is outside the hospital after Michael and Enzo have successfully scared off the men who came to kill Don Corleone, and Enzo's hands are shaking as he tries to light a cigarette but Michael notices his own hands are not shaking as he helps Enzo.
And Enzo, who simply came to personally thank Vito, stayed and supported Michael. The Corleones never forgot this and made sure Enzo had a successful career as a baker.
A lot of things are clearer if you've read the book. The Godfather might threaten terrorize or even order someone killed, but he's also notoriously old fashioned about certain things. He doesn't take the deal with Sollozzo because he truly doesn't want to get involved with that kind of business despite the potential for enormous profit
I will keep saying it. Of all the new additions to the channel, Steph is the best by far; she is probably the smartest of the channel, appreciates well-acted, written, and filmed scenes, doesn’t talk over every dialogue and about unrelated topics to what they are reacting to, etc. She is so good; I missed her when she was gone, and I am glad she is back. I would love to see Achara and Steph react to Mr. Robot, Dark, The Bear, Barry, Fleabag, or Severance.

Well, maybe, except for the scene where Sonny is kicking Carlo's butt out on the street. A couple of those punches that Sonny throws at Carlo missed hitting him by an obvious, considerable distance. Once that is noticed it becomes to obvious to overlook on repeat viewings. Someone in the film editing process somehow let that clip slip by.

When there are short moments in the Italian language without subtitles, it is because it doesn’t matter to the progress of the film, exactly what they are saying - the audience has the general idea of what is going on, but it makes the audience focus more on what shows on the faces and body language of these phenomenal actors, and watch their reactions to each other, and we also can absorb the atmosphere built up in the scene through camera movements, lighting, music, sound fx, placement of the actors, etc and we get whatever information we need from all of that, without specific words. You will notice the same in Godfather Part 2.

Part 3 was never supposed to be made. It was a money grab. Francis always intended it to end as part 2 ended, With Michael alone. Al Pacino murdered the michael character in part 3 anyway. I don't know who he was playing.
That first scene is great, and not just because it tells you who Vito Corleone is. It tells you WHY he is. He's an immigrant and immigrants get treated poorly. So he became the government/justice system for his community. They come to him for help and in turn owe him It's one of the reasons he's so powerful, more powerful that the other mob bosses. His first scene tells you all that without having to spell it out.
if there's anything that impressed me like this movie, it's the struggles the filmmakers had to face while doing it. Really recommend the recent Mini-Series "The Offer", where the making of this movie is documented. Especially the cast for Coppola and young Pacino was great.
This is such an American story, not just an Italian immigrant movie. It's the blend of the New World and the Old World that forged the modern nation. What is fantastic about it is that every scene is like a "slice of life" - you tend to forget that the lighting and camera are there, and that the actors are even playing a part. The effect is seamless.
That actor playing Lou Cabrassi was outside practicing his speech for the Godfather was him actually rehearsing his lines and the director decided to film him doing so. Wasn't a bad idea.
Regarding the hospital scene, according to the book, when the assassins saw two men standing outside the entrance acting like guards, it looked like the whole place was guarded.

Yes Steph,Talia Shire "Connie" besides The Godfather & Rocky Series was also involved in the Filmmaking of 3 films during the 80's the most memorable for me was "Rad"(1986) Talia & her late husband Jack Schwartzman were both involved in the making of the movie,a Family,Cheesy but Good Film she also stars in the movie as well.
That nervous actor is a real mobster, he was in the movie representing Colombo family (as I recall) to supervise if everything is going according to cosa nostra will.
An even more interesting story about the actor who plays Luca Brasi. He was an actual mafia enforcer for the New York crime boss Joe Colombo. Joe Colombo got his hooks into the production of this movie and had script approval. The actor that was slated to play Luca Brasi became unavailable due to illness I believe and they had to scramble so they offered the part to former wrestler and mob enforcer Lenny Montana.
For Marlon´s Brando character in this movie, Don Vito Corleone, Francis Ford Coppola put a jaw prosthesis in his mouth and a gauze, to give him that particular face. Brando was relatively young in this film, and Coppola pretended to age him and look more threatening.
In Francis's DVD commentary (which is awesome btw), he said the jaw thing was Brando's idea. He told Coppola that he should look like a bulldog when they were doing make up tests and screwing around at Marlon's house

I recently watched the 3rd film (1990 cut), and I liked it more than the 2nd film. The 2nd film felt more like a sad documentary. Where as the 3rd gave me more emotional depth. The ending hits so hard. It actually made me cry.

The cat in the very beginning on the Godfather's lap was a stray cat that wandered onto set and the actor just went with it. The horses head was real which they got from a nearby slaughterhouse. The newspapers & photos about the gang war were real (which is coming up next!)
The horse's head was real. It came from a slaughterhouse where horses were being destroyed for dog food. A member of the production went to the company, chose a horse that resembled the thoroughbred used in the earlier scene, and asked that when the time came, the head be sent to the filmmakers. The company later sent a box with the head packed in ice.
I also read that during rehearsals a fake horse head and blood was used, but when the actual filming was done, they used the real horse head, which shocked the actor so his reactions were authentic. Can anyone verify if this is accurate?

Part 3 was never supposed to be made. It was a money grab. Francis always intended it to end as part 2 ended, With Michael alone. Al Pacino murdered the michael character in part 3 anyway. I don't know who he was playing.

That first scene is great, and not just because it tells you who Vito Corleone is. It tells you WHY he is. He's an immigrant and immigrants get treated poorly. So he became the government/justice system for his community. They come to him for help and in turn owe him It's one of the reasons he's so powerful, more powerful that the other mob bosses. His first scene tells you all that without having to spell it out.
I always thought (and maybe they were) the nurse and Enzo who saved Don Corleone in the hospital better have been set up for life! 😄

if there's anything that impressed me like this movie, it's the struggles the filmmakers had to face while doing it. Really recommend the recent Mini-Series "The Offer", where the making of this movie is documented. Especially the cast for Coppola and young Pacino was great.

This is such an American story, not just an Italian immigrant movie. It's the blend of the New World and the Old World that forged the modern nation. What is fantastic about it is that every scene is like a "slice of life" - you tend to forget that the lighting and camera are there, and that the actors are even playing a part. The effect is seamless.

That actor playing Lou Cabrassi was outside practicing his speech for the Godfather was him actually rehearsing his lines and the director decided to film him doing so. Wasn't a bad idea.

the "nervous actor" from this movie was an actual mafia enforcer irl and he was sent to the set to make sure the movie wasn't being shot in a way that made the actual mafia look bad. Since he was hanging around on set all the time, they decided to give him a part in the movie lol

The actor playing Luca *was* nervous but it didn't help that Brando was making faces at him while he was delivering his lines ;) Brando also loaded his stretcher with bricks. Watch the ambulance bearers faces while hoisting him up ;)

The reason that the scene was in the movie, where Lenny Montana, who played Luca Brasi, was rehearsing is lines was, the director saw him actually doing that and thought it would be great if he did it for the camera.

Okay ladies, you are CORRECT, girl on the left, that yes the actor that plays Luca Brasi was extremely nervous to act in front of Marlon Brando!! Which is kind of funny if you think about the fact that that actor, whose name is Lenny Montana, was actually a SOLDIER in the Colombo family (Mafia)! Joe Colombo, a mob figure in New York, at first did not want a film being made from the book!! The Italian American community felt that it through a negative light on the Italian people!!!
But the producer was able to befriend Joe and get him on board!!
There is a great series on Paramount called "The Offer" which tells the whole story of trying to, and eventually getting to, make this FILM!!! Lots of great information on The Godfather is contained in THAT series!!! Including that the horse's head was actually a real horse's head but they didn't kill a horse to get it!!😮
Also DON'T let anybody TALK YOU OUT of watching the third Godfather!! It completes Michael's Arc as a character!!! It's not as great as 1 and 2 but it isn't necessary addition to the story!! I think you OWE it to YOURSELVES to watch it and JUDGE it for YOURSELVES!!!❤
Yes Steph,Talia Shire "Connie" besides The Godfather & Rocky Series was also involved in the Filmmaking of 3 films during the 80's the most memorable for me was "Rad"(1986) Talia & her late husband Jack Schwartzman were both involved in the making of the movie,a Family,Cheesy but Good Film she also stars in the movie as well.
That nervous actor is a real mobster, he was in the movie representing Colombo family (as I recall) to supervise if everything is going according to cosa nostra will.
An even more interesting story about the actor who plays Luca Brasi. He was an actual mafia enforcer for the New York crime boss Joe Colombo. Joe Colombo got his hooks into the production of this movie and had script approval. The actor that was slated to play Luca Brasi became unavailable due to illness I believe and they had to scramble so they offered the part to former wrestler and mob enforcer Lenny Montana.
For Marlon´s Brando character in this movie, Don Vito Corleone, Francis Ford Coppola put a jaw prosthesis in his mouth and a gauze, to give him that particular face. Brando was relatively young in this film, and Coppola pretended to age him and look more threatening.
In Francis's DVD commentary (which is awesome btw), he said the jaw thing was Brando's idea. He told Coppola that he should look like a bulldog when they were doing make up tests and screwing around at Marlon's house

I recently watched the 3rd film (1990 cut), and I liked it more than the 2nd film. The 2nd film felt more like a sad documentary. Where as the 3rd gave me more emotional depth. The ending hits so hard. It actually made me cry.

Somethings that I've heard about this movie! The cat in the very beginning on the Godfather's lap was a stray cat that wandered onto set and the actor just went with it.
The horses head was real which they got from a nearby slaughterhouse.
The newspapers & photos about the gang war were real (which is coming up next!)

The horse's head was real. It came from a slaughterhouse where horses were being destroyed for dog food. A member of the production went to the company, chose a horse that resembled the thoroughbred used in the earlier scene, and asked that when the time came, the head be sent to the filmmakers. The company later sent a box with the head packed in ice.
I also read that during rehearsals a fake horse head and blood was used, but when the actual filming was done, they used the real horse head, which shocked the actor so his reactions were authentic. Can anyone verify if this is accurate?

I think that the first 2 Godfather movies make the greatest movie ever made. The 3rd one is a let-down, but still has it's moments.
