      It's a friend's truck - lets me borrow it to make videos. Definitely needed a new box or should have been driven to the salvage yard but.... I figure someone might need to do the same to save a vehicle if there's no new parts available. Thanks for checking it out Greg :)

    Getting busy around here with summer in full swing. BUT!! I make time for your rust repair videos!! I always learn something! I am taking a liking to your low rpm, large disk grinder… I bet you are the only one on the Internet that uses that thing!… It makes sense! Low rpm and low heat means no distortion! Thanks for your continued videos and education! Another good one!! Chris in MN!!

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That style of grinder (only air tools) is the only thing you'll see used in an actual body shop for the reasons you stated - no heat, no shooting sparks across the shop, no worries about thinning the sheet metal :)

    Excellent work! Why lap weld instead of butt weld the patch panel? My '81 Trans Am needs this repair on the passenger side. Everything on the lower rear quarter panel from an inch and a half below the body line on down needs to be replaced. I'll cut what I need from a new quarter panel skin I bought. I was planning to cut along a line even with the half way point of the side marker light hole.

    Ithink if you read directions on some newer fillers they say for use over bare metal only . The one I use will stick to any metal. Oldays primer and bondo may have a hard time sticking so Chrysler came up with the epoxy thing
    In professional shops they dont use it any more they use metal to metal primer. I did not know people still used epoxy until I watched some utube stuff. It is a good adhesion promoter in the old days we used it on new parts and bumpers it would still work for that.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points Roger - your right most shops go direct to metal - filler and primers - no epoxy 1st. Thanks for your comment :)

    Professional RUST Repairer... HQ in MICHIGAN... that is job security!! It's heartbreaking how many late model trucks and cars rot here. : ( Question, and I know nothing about welding, but will water get in that lap joint? Will that be more prone to rust in the future than a butt joint? Why a lap joint over a butt joint on that patch panel? ( just curious, not second guessing a professional). Thank you for all you do and sharing amazing content and videos!

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's a good video explaining in better detail than I could explain here - th-cam.com/video/JIIonJOVro4/w-d-xo.html All or most quality body shops use a combination of lap and butt depending on the area you are welding. Lap for areas where you can tap the seam down butt for more rigid areas like door jambs, rockers, edges, etc. I think lap lasts longer than butt actually - probably cause you can tap the seam down and the filler acts as a buffer between the seam and the finish. You really don't want a seam right under the finish - most likely the seam will end up showing later on.
