      I'm not shure about the soul food but I think they mentioned that the Tumnus was quieter (not to mention its bottom end) so the Klons totaly lost. And if you factor in that the Soul food even if its not an improvement like the Tumnus is, costs only 70 bucks.....why on Earth would you lose a kidney for a Klon?

    They all sound great, especially the Gold Archer and the Tumnus (as clones)... But, I think the Gold Archer would sit (and cut) better in an ensemble context. The low-end of that Tumnus might get muddy outside of a trio set up. If you added keys and second guitar to that trio, things get cloudy quick without space and EQ... I guess it all depends on the style of music, the amp, and the EQ... Just a practical thought, because what sounds good to you in your room doesn't always translate on stage with others...

    • @simonmarcotte2432
      @simonmarcotte2432 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good point! Adding to that : 99% of the time in a live setting, sound engineers will hit the low cut button or will attenuate as high as 150 hz because that's where the low end for the bass and the kick drum is. But yeah, everyone's usage is different. I would set the Tumnus as a 2nd overdrive with a little mid boost and the gain set to 12o'clock to get a dirtier sound because it would cut into a live band setting.

    For my money I would have to specifically shoot out the Tumnus and the Ikon. I would probably end up with the Wampler because it just comes alive at higher gain levels but sounds authentic when it's down low. Also I love Brian's work so ya!

  • @gdasilva
    @gdasilva 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    My experience has been that as a player, I can get a great tone out of a pedal/amp/guitar by myself but once in a band mix, the perception changes drastically. I suppose the Klon/Klone mythos relies primarily on what it does to your tone in a band mix situation. Any chance of repeating this demo/shootout with some backing tracks including drums, bass, and a rhythm guitar? I suppose that would be the ultimate demonstration of which of these get the job done.

    • @JaiceyLynnWins
      @JaiceyLynnWins 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am truly curious to see just how much of a difference would be discernible in a live mix, pound for pound. They are all so close in this setting that it still challenges a seasoned ear to hear the subtle nuances between them, but then adding in a band with the interplay of frequencies vs. the slightly different tonal characteristics cutting through.
      Part of me thinks it would be even more difficult to pick out those same differences, though I feel as if certain pedals may actually surprise us when the amps are pushed to a higher volume in a live band mix.

    Ya know...we all have our struggles. Body aches & pains, a loved lost, poverty in some form or fashion. However, when you have at least 20 very cool amps, literally hundreds of pedals and a good buddy to jam with, all those big, bad problems get lost in the darkest corner of the practice room.

    31:30 Larry Carlton! Nicely done indeed. LOL, I think your tones overall are darker then I'm usually allotted to, you 2 certainly play marvelous. But for me the EHX Soul Food is probably more to my usual recipe, but, as you point out so well, there is a bit of secret sauce compression going on, especially in the original Klons. And you shared several other tonal secrets in this episode so thank you again

      Hey Captain, why are Klon Centaur so expensive? It's just circuitry. If it's possible to truly "clone" the circuit, then what are people shelling out three thousand clams FOR? The faceplate? If it's NOT possible to truly clone the circuit however, why not? If it's just circuitry after all. Is there some two-thousand-dollar capacitor in there or something? I don't understand! I heard that Klon last night through a LP on your channel last night, and it made me jump in the air! So I looked it up, and WTFFFF!

    • @fernandocastro1357
      @fernandocastro1357 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CraigFlowersMusic TL/DR: the design is inventive and the product sounds good, and there are only around 8000 units in the world, so that is probably the main factor justifying the price.
      Long answer: The Klon was one of the very first truly boutique pedals. The guy who created and hand-made each of these pedals used to take orders on the phone, he wanted to hear what a potential customer expected to make sure the Klon was something for them; then the sold product was shipped via post. This went on for a few years. It used to cost under 300 dollars new, hand-made. Over time, more and more guitarists started to consider it a "secret weapon", because it sounded different from the usual go-to, mid-boosty overdrive pedals (e.g. TubeScreamer) at the time. It ended up landing on the pedalboards of some famous artists, which increased demand for the product. The guy couldn't produce them by hand anymore in a timely fashion, and refused to have it produced by some contracted factory. Eventually he stopped selling them, after shipping around 8000 units total.
      So there you have one justifiable explanation for the price: there are only a few in the world, and if you want to have "the true thing that was touched by the hands of the artist", you have to pay top dollar for it. The guy tried to protect his invention buy covering the circuit with hard black epoxi. Ever since, some people "destroyed" their Klons to see what was underneath it, and the circuit has been known for many years. You can check its schematic and analysis in a website called electrosmash dot com and see that it is indeed a very inventive and original design -- which can be copied and replicated, in theory. The original creator states that he bought a very large number of old, vintage, no longer produced electrical components that are the "fairy dust" responsible for the unique sound, but this is higly debatable. Moreover, some highly regarded pedal designers like to point out that the "magical" components are not even relevant if the Klon is used only as a booster, which is how most people like to use the pedal.

    I never thought I actually needed a Klon-style pedal until I saw this video... amazing demo as always.
    I actually ended up getting a Red Jasper from Free-the-Tone Red, which is not exactly a Klon-clone, but occupies the same space - so to speak. I am absolutely in love with that pedal: it fattens the overall tone, acts as a buffer for my pedalboard, has so much dynamics, is very very touch sensitive and organic, and stacks perfectly well with other drive pedals.
    Guys, please, please, please, show the amazing japanese pedal makers some love too, there are some pretty amazing stuff coming from them (Free-the-Tone, Human Gear, Shin's Music, Vemuram etc). Cheers!

    Six years later and they still all sound nearly identical to me. I guess you'd have had to have been in the room with these guys to hear the differences they were hearing.
    Josh Scott* did a video on his JHS channel comparing a boatload of Klons and klones, adjusting them to allow for pot tolerances, and got virtual identical responses from pedals priced forty bucks to obscene.
    I'm happy with my thirty dollar Caline and the TC Zeus Drive which cost me twice as much. The Caline is a bit noisier but, other than that, they both seem to me to do the same thing.
    *Mr Scott doesn't seem to approve the use of the pedals as boosts and uses them as overdrives, gain at over one o'clock.

    Once again, another superb demo/analysis. The real surprise to me was Dan's new guitar which I couldn't take my eyes or ears off of... I own both of the Rockett pedals. In the studio, you have to pick between them as they are different, but at a gig any differences are lost in the shuffle. Theres so much there to explore; treble bleed vs no treble bleed on strats, 50s wiring on a Les Paul vs modern wiring, linear pots vs audio taper. I think Klon type pedals would be perfect for an episode on the subject.

Awesome pedal One my favorites! Wampler makes great pedals. I own the 'Ego compressor' also on my board, they are paired with a Keeley Red Dirt, 'MXR Carbon Copy' and a 'Boss EQ' to add more versatility and to tame the tube amp beast for home practice. There are so many different types and sounds: the smooth Wampler Velvet Fuzz, the spitty ZVEX Fuzz Factory, variations like the Catalinbread Karma Suture harmonic percolator. Some fuzz pedals have gate and bias knobs. It's a minefield for someone like me who has been playing for 26 years but never owned a fuzz! Cheers.

      For those on a budget or those experimenting with the idea of buying into this sound, it's very nice. Not Klon territory, it's got it's own flavor. Admittedly didn't work for me and my setups but for someone on a budget, it's a colorful and unique take on the circuit. Ultimately I went for the Wampler as it's much more organic, true to the original and didn't have that weird high-mid bump/fizz thing going on that the Soul Food did.

      I use a JHS Modded soul food and it's absolutely the best overdrive for a semi clean amp, kills the 808. I kept both, the 808 for metal. Anyway, the JHS had selectable germanium diodes which makes the soul food go from convincing to uncanny. Love that thing, perfect bright spanky "clean" tones and it works with all guitars equally well.

      I was skeptical and passed on the Soul Food at first and went with the Archer. After discovering that I didn't care for the Archer I took a shot with the SF and haven't looked back. I don't care if it's not a faithful klone. It sounds great on its own and makes my other drive pedals sound better when paired up. What more do you want?

    Oh man I got my Tumnus today!!!!! It is so glorious! I had never played a klon klone before. It is everything I had been missing in an overdrive. It sounds like it adds the perfect amount of compression even at low gain and low volume. It really does leave you nowhere to hide like you guys said. It somehow adds even more touch sensitivity to my rig. I was playing an old noname (Sound Projects) All-American 5 style amp (tube radio tubes) and it made it sounds like I was playing some $2000+ boutique amp or something.
    I have the Earthquaker Palisades for my tubescreamer mod+ clone, which has been fun, but I think I must be more of a Klon guy. Thanks for introducing me to it!!

      A great demo to prove the overpriced Klon will only sit in your signal chain if you tweak it right.... the same as other klones do.
      Klon is a rip-off: Josh at JHS will a/b any of his creations against other pedals, and because of that I have faith in JHS... but Bill Finnegan is too scared to a/b his Klon... he’s a weak hermit for good reason.

    • @davidburke2132

      toetappin bob To be fair the hype over the Klon Centaur wasn’t really Bill’s doing and most of the people profiting off the back of the product are the people who own them rather than Bill himself. When they were in “production” by Bill originally they were fairly reasonably priced according to the custom or relatively expensive components, construction methods by Bill, etc. Now he is producing them again in very occasional almost one-offs and selling them typically according to eBay bidding, so they’re expensive again as they’re obviously competing against the price for the original run second hand units. Personally I’d prefer the original creator to make that profit rather than a lucky owner/collector. I understand your viewpoint of the price of Klon’s not being justifiable in the second hand market but I don’t understand the need you seem to have to attack Bill himself? None of this is his fault. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    When I first plugged in the Tumnus at home it sounded okay. When I used it on stage, that’s when I “got it”. Now I never turn it off. It makes everything sound better and more alive. It cuts through the densest mix without sounding hyped. It’s the drive for people who hate drive pedals and love their amp tone but need a little more hair on the note. Internally it runs at 18 volts and the drive knob is actually a mix knob. That’s what I call “transparent”. The buffer alone is worth the price of admission. I would not want this pedal in true bypass. Love it.

    I have a Soul Food. I'll admit the treble knob is really tricky and can make your tone sound really harsh if not put in the right setting. But everything else is a win with that pedal. 60 bucks got me a really good od tone plus a built-in buffer, which saved me the money I was gonna spend on a separate buffer. it's a great deal.

    • @HeviNova
      @HeviNova 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree on it being non transparent. When using it with a clean channel with headroom I can get dirty and clean clarity. Even with a solid state amp. Level around 10 ish to match clean guitar level, tone at 1130 drive at 2:00. Decrease drive and increase level with a tube amp to taste for clean OD. I get everything from andy summers clean to bb king blues with the pedal. The only downside is the treble can escalate when cranking the drive.

    Never ever set the knobs in the same place. To compare these pedals you have to dial in the treble content and the dirt/gain content to match what you are hearing EXACTLY ( with eyes closed perhaps ) Then compare whats different about the two pedals in every way from there. Simply having a knob at noon doesnt allow for part tolerances and also where the pot is tightened against the box in orientation. Cool video and I enjoy the relaxed vibe of things.. but its unfair to compare two pedals.. ( even if they are the same exact pedals ) based on where the knobs are pointing.

    • @MrShaneConaway

      Shane Conaway they spent their time on the gold clon because they'd borrowed it, this kind of thing is very hard to guage the hype of klon is ridiculous the soul food is close enough for me, they've increased by about £30 since I bought mine but its still half the price of the archer and everyone gets a crack at the klon which is good I think because nothing should be exclusive to only those that can afford.

    Well done, fellas. Top-notch production. Love the video overlays highlighting which pedal is being used, and the recording quality with compressor; voice comes right through and amps are clear and articulate. As for the pedals, themselves, well... awesome. Great choice of guitars and amps for evaluation. I got a lot more than I expected from this survey. I was just recently lamenting not having a low-to-moderate overdrive sound that yields great touch-responsiveness and transparency (seems that term is often overused/overhyped, but is clearly warranted in the discussion of these pedals). You guys have given me a new itch to scratch! Oh, by the way, really nice playing from both of you, as well. Relevant and tasty. Rock on.

    So, to sum it up: the Klons both sound very throaty, lush, hairy. The Archer has less mids and a clearer sound. The Soul Food sounds slightly harsh in the upper mids/treble, especially with the gain turned up, and is clearer than an original Klon. The Tumnus is closest to the original Klon to me, more hairy and less clear than the Archer, also more bass.

    Great vid. I'd been looking to get a decent Klon-type pedal for a while. Other videos had led me to reject the Soul Food, although I was considering the Turnip Greens for the reverb option given the price. Your vid narrowed things down to the Archer Ikon and the Wampler Tumnus. The Tumnus seemed a little bass heavy but given Brian Wampler's near fanatical quest for great tone I figured that was as much down to your setup as it was the pedal. So I waited until the Tumnus came into stock and was about to pull the trigger when ....... I found a second-hand Archer Ikon at a friendly price on Ebay. I am very happy with the purchase. I used your comments during the video as well as from others online to set the pedal up and got that very unforgiving yet guitar friendly tone that the Klon(e) is renowned for. Thanks. :)
