    The main thing I learned as a mechanic in the Marine Corps was always look busy. Whether that meant making sure I was far enough under a truck with my coverall sleeves buttoned together over my head while I napped or making sure I had a rag and a wrench in my back pocket or a clipboard with some paper, blank or otherwise as I roamed aimlessly around the maintenance yard. :)

      LOL Oh how I remember those days....Semper Fi Vern !!!! Even us grunts did the same thing !!! If I cleaned my weapon anymore it would've been polished.

      As a 0331 i just held the trigger to look busy. Did use my 240 as a pillow once, but she was clean and ready to roll. Just like Sarah said, clean them before use. Wise words.

    So happy AF,Retired, my 91miata runs great! GOOD LUCK Florida Keys Mike, when I worked on the flight line on aircraft I always went to job control and looked at their maintenance board, if you want to make a day off for yourself clear the board , then you get to go home early, I hate cutting myself especially on the inner forearms

    Sarah...the main buzz in town (there's still more to come). Re-bolt removal from new jobs, I've often used disposable paper plates; cheap (ie-don't throw them out when they're demoted from the kitchen), you can write on them, ie crossmember bolts, gearbox bolts, and they soak up stains (to a point).

    Clean it before working on it. Great tip. Most people think it's obsessive to keep an engine clean, but in reality, it's just good practice. I can spot a leak at a glance.

    When I was working as a tire tech I found that cloth gloves were an absolute must. If you're doing something like rebuilding an engine or working in an engine bay nitrile gloves are way nicer but if I'm working on suspension or something where dexterity isn't as important I go with the cloth gloves. They both have their places in my opinion.

    • @SarahnTuned
      @SarahnTuned  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      knexfreak32 I watched two different colleagues in the Air Force lose a finger working on heavy equipment because of cloth gloves. I only wear them, like you said, on instances where I know without a doubt dexterity isn’t an issue.

    Great video! I'll try washing the truck before working on it next. Some things I've used in the past for times when I couldn't put the bolts and nuts back from where they came is using ziploc bags with a sharpie to mark down where they came from. Egg cartons come in handy for parts with long shafts so they don't roll around and don't fit in a ziploc.

    In the spirit of this video, I figure I’ll share a couple things I’ve picked up over the years. First, since you were filling your coolant in the video, I got a spill proof funnel to do that on my cars, and it’s great. It comes with attachments for pretty much any radiator cap, and makes it easy to fill without spillage, which always happened to me because there never seams to be a funnel that works well in the radiator. Admittedly, this isn’t as big a deal on a car with a surge tank like the TT, but if it has a regular radiator cap and overflow, it’s the best.
    Second, I keep track on the date and mileage of any work I do on one of my cars in the notes app on my phone. This way, I know when I last changed my oil/brake fluid/coolant/AC compressor/camshaft/heads or whatever whenever I need to know, since I always have it in my pocket.

    one thing you could use that dial gauge on is measuring the runout of a brake disc or a wheel hub. To see if they are warped. Also if you are ever rebuilding an engine you could use it to measure the end float of a crank. But there are lots of uses for it

  • @Dave-fx5zw
    @Dave-fx5zw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most cars are setup in a way that from a cold start, at idle the radiator will lose enough heat through natural convection that the fans aren't necessary. On the TT, the low speed fan switch, F54, closes at 95*C, so actual coolant temp you would read from the ECM or Cluster/49c from the coolant temp sensors, G2/G62 would have to be a several degrees above that, since they're located directly off the head, and the fan switch is halfway down the big heat sync that is that shiny new radiator.
    Even before the radiator upgrade, you were only sitting at 99* after driving(with fans full on the whole time) so those fans probably won't be spinning up much anymore, at least until you get on it a little. Good to hear they're working correctly now!
    I've witnessed well experienced, dealership techs condemn $1,000 cooling fan assemblies because they didn't turn on in the shop, only to later find out that the engine had a cracked cylinder sleeve or warped head. Those are fun conversations to have with customers. Glad you decided to drive it before assuming there was a problem.

    I was working on my car over the weekend and had a swarm of bees show up in my garage too! It was nuts. Ended up turning on the car and running it for a few minutes to give off exhaust gas to get them to leave. Swarms must be out in this warm weather looking for new hive locations..... NOT IN MY GARAGE!!!!!
