    the best thing i did was putting a retractable dog lead on the ceiling and hook the cables up to it. no more tangling wires

      @MakeUseOf  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hmm, I tried mounting my PC into the rafters in the garage, and to be honest I found the wires just got even more in the way. Maybe I just wasn't used to it.

    • @Kmobful
      @Kmobful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah you need something that will pull any slack up and out of the way. my pc is on the floor the wires go up and tacked onto the top of my tv. i placed the dog lead in the centre of the vr space, then tacked the wires to it.
      this does waste some cable length. if you had a bigger room you might need to buy longer cables

    • @Kmobful
      @Kmobful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you could use like one of those key chains if you wanted it to look pretty. maybe a ceiling rail too.
      theres a vid somewhere of a guy that did a way better job than me but he used 3d printer for all the clips and rails and bought longer cables. he used 2 dog leads to run up the extra cable slack.

      Amazon has adhesive hooks (cable management) there a square shap and come with 3 pound weight holding adhesive come in Black.
      For 11.99 you get a set of 60
      Thee best deal you will ever see as most 1pound adhesive hook are 10-20 for 1-6
      I’m setting my pc on top a higher area next to my massive desk/hutch. Used ikea metal rod shelves zip tied to ikea both room metal rod swiveling towel holders to be mounted onto the hutch with extra wood support to hold more resistance. Effectively it will keep my pc from tipping over I made (2) one for the back and the front.
      The front has ( two of the four ) rods free to move so I can hang headsets and headphones. The front also had 3 metal trays about 4” deep and 6x6 in LxW
      The metal rod shelves were kitchenwear and the two support rods have square shapped Rubber stoppers on the effectively to prevent any transfer of conduction and still see my glass panel and interior of the pc with access to the front and the back.
      I have ikea chair foam attachable about 3ft by 5.5ft and enough to rig along the wall for 3-5” of food padding.
      Though it’s cost effective to get a roll of Black foam off amazon and stick with the 24” width only. Don’t go below 5” thick
      For $75 it’s 5x24x72 you may be able to get by with 1 or 2 if you go sideways for one wall
      But with plenty in my the basement I’ll use the chair attachments and put a fabric over the random color lol. By the way the is super light you can use the extra clips and some fishing line or thread to penetrate the foam and feed it threw the hooks for simple mounting with no surface damage to the wall.
      The foam will also be sound dampening aka proofing at the same time but 5” thick all around

    In the future i'd like to see ceiling representations in the boundaries in VR. Also maybe the ability to add objects into the boundaries, so your ceiling fan can actually be visualized even if it was just a simple box. Many people have more than just a simple plain box room to play VR in, and the addition of this will really help.

    • @bossbam
      @bossbam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree that they need to add a ceiling boundry however I don't think there's a need to add custom objects simply because you should either move the stuff out of the way or make your boundry smaller

    Those tension rods are genius, I was going to buy a light stand. I ordered 4, I'm going to use two for light houses and two for my large green screen.
    Update: Tension rods have replaced all my tripods now. I had tripods for studio lights and now I just use tension rods for those also. Just buy what are called super clamps and you can get a studio light end that screws into them. If there is a bundle deal of them I'd consider going that route if you stream and leave things up permanently. I have 6 now and I would have saved a bit had I gone with a 6 or even 8 pack to begin with.

    I would add that you can increase your space by quite a bit if you move any obstacles to the same sides/corners of the room as other obstacles. If you have furniture (or similar) in opposite corners of the room, you severely shrink your play area.

    The idea to use tension rods is something I haven't seen before - I've ordered some straight away! When you're in rented accommodation, its even harder to justify drilling into the wall

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Be sure not to overextend them - it's very easy to accdientally push your ceiling up! They don't need to withstand human levels of yanking on them, just enough to not fall over .

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're overrated in my opinion. You can't turn around without hitting the cable if you do that, which is more immersion breaking for me than having to avoid stepping on a cable.

      Whaaaaaaaaaaat??!!? Jesus, its like its made for hobbits, lol! Here in Sugar Land most of our ceilings are 10' high in any home made in the last 20 years or so, and often in the living room the 1.5 story house is popular, where half of the home has double height that goes all the way up to the ceiling of the second floor's ceiling, which comes out to about 22' or so, and the great room, dining room, dining nook, and kitchen are all one big area. We call that "open concept" which is the most popular, so there's really no such thing as a small room. The smallest I have, which is considered quite compact is 13x11' with a closet and shared bathroom since its just a guest bedroom. O_O
      My big issue is that I'm trying to use what is my "dining area" in my open concept as a VR zone, but the smallest I can make it with available wall-space is 7 meters diagonal and the HTC Vive is complaining, but still seems to work OK despite its warning protest. *shrugs*

I went from the Oculus, Mixed Reality, HTC Vive, and the Index. Ended up ridding of VR. Awesome exp but hassle with out a proper space.

    It was recommended by the manual not to have the IR not further than 5 meters from each other. Is it the wide angle that makes yours look further apart from each other or did you put them further away from each other than the 5 meter and it's working well?

    • @MakeUseOf

Steams app turn signal to show the centre of the room, where the ceiling is and to stop your cable tangling up and locomotive vr for walking without moving by using your arms walking motion to navigate. It said the Vive was good up to 5m (16ft) but from what I have seen it only goes a maximum of 2.5m x 2.5m (8ft). I can now do my maximum room of 5m x 5m (16ft x 16ft). Vive or Rift? ... Rift, I would drill some holes in the stands and screw them to the ceiling. Vive comes with wall attachments, is that out of the question too? Difficult to advise without seeing an actual photo. Does the cupbaord go all the way to the ceiling, or is there space on top? Either the Oculus stands could sit on top, or a small mini-tripod for the Vive basestations.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, depends on how big your room is really. If you can use the sofa to split off one half, such that it's VR playspace, sofa, then TV on the far end, that would work. I just wouldn't risk a TV anywhere in the actual playspace, or near the boundaries of it. Otherwise, put them in a different room and cast to it. Steam Link lets you view remotely: www.theverge.com/2019/4/3/18286931/steam-games-stream-how-to-valve-link-anywhere-in-home-streaming . Or Quest 2 you can cast to a suitable Chromecast device or the Oculus app.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They shouldn't, no, unless you have a Kinect hooked up - that blasts the room with IR lasers in the same way SteamVR lighthouses do, and may blind the Oculus sensors. The standard console stuff shouldn't matter, beyond being a little bit shiny and reflective...

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @computethisinfo

    I am really unsure about getting a vive Friday if it goes on a good enough sale. I really want it but my play space is not adequate. I have a 1.5x1.8 floor space that I could use, but a lot more air space above my bed area. But not one of my walls is suitable to place a polr so I would have to directly mount into the wall, and one of the trackers would be facing a mirror with the other on the same wall. I guess I could take it down but sont want to. My computer is way out of the way under my desk behind the bed, and my screens are far enough back to hit the desk before the screens. My roof is high enough to not reach it but I have a dangling light right in the middle. Not sure how I go about changing that. I have an LED bulb in it. Not sure how shatter resistant they are.
    Will the side of my bed cause me to lose tracking if I find myself leaning towards the floor where only the camera behind me would be able to see it and could end up covering it's view? And I have no way to wire manage other than to tread it under my bed. Should I buy or not? I would get WMR instead if I could get the Samsung oddysey in the UK but I can't. Also my pc has a gtx 1070 so pimax is off limits due to performance, and I may still struggle with the oddysey as a result of the higher res. I hate living in a family house.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's tricky, but you'll absolutely need to cover or remove the mirror. The light might be annoying, even if it doesn't shatter, but changing it would require drilling into the ceiling and rewiring. If it dangles down, perhaps you could just loop the cable and tie it back to shift it up a bit.. assuming it's not too heavy. The Vive basestations are more forgiving than Oculus cameras are when it comes to tracking - in fact, you can run with just a single basestation, but woudln't be able to turn around. There may be some better ideas for basestation placement - consider posting a floor plan and picture to r/vive subreddit, they'll come up with some ideas there. Mounting the basestations isn't too tricky, you could get away with little tripods if those are more convenient, like stikcing one of top of your monitor or desk.

      @@MakeUseOf thanks for your suggestions.
      just an update, I ordered the Oculus touch bundle this morning as it went on sale while the vive from my understanding is not. And I decided with my dodgy room layout, the rift trackers will be better bet as I can place them both on my desk and angle them through trial and error till I can get somewhat of a working experience. I won't be able to go full vr like gorn as I would likely break my wrists and controllers. At least the rift sensors are a lot easier to remove and move elsewhere whereas the vive base stations would have been screwed into the wall. I just don't like thst the rift uses usb ports. Meaning I can't put the trackers far from my system which is under by desk at the foot of my bed. And I wouldn't be able to thread a chord all around my room. It would be a pain. But I'll consider it if I have problems. My main issue is my door taking up half the play space area and I have the mirror next to that on the adjacent wall. So I can't have a wire along the floor infront of the door, and my desk goes right upto my door frame but covers half my floor space as the bed covers half my room space and desk space. And the opposite wall is a full length window with a ledge and curtains and draws underneath. And I have a freaking cupboard built into the wall taking up a third of that wallspace. The list of problems goes on. So I guess it is at most one direction standing for me till I eventually move out in a handful of years. Assuming I have money

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be misunderstanding, but if the bed is in the middle of the room..... it'll be in the way, yeh. Can you shove the bed off to one side and clear at least a 1.5m square area? That would allow you full 360 tracking, if not roomscale.
