I just transplanted baby leeks here in Louisiana. These things get huge and they`re doing well so far. Bad "organic" soil killed a lot of my onion seedlings until I lowered the PH. It was so alkaline it was frying everything. I tested the PH adjustment with arugula and herb seedlings and when their health improved I planted my leeks and scallions. Now I`m slowly building soil in my yard garden. I`m bringing in forest soil/leaf mold and testing it with seedlings and adjusting fertilizer and PH very slowly. I bought two bunches of grocery store green onions and transplanted those in the garden for tops and a huge seed harvest, planted some radishes, beets, carrots, strawberry plants, cape gooseberries, chokeberries and spinach plus I`m getting holes ready for 8 fig, 5 mulberry, and two pineapple guava trees. If there`s room left I want to try a fig variety "surprise" bundle of 4 because I only have brown turkey and celeste right now. I found a huge 10x30 concrete slab in the woods left here 60 or 70 years ago by an oil company that was covered in compost and got four garden wagons overflowing where I could barely pull it with the richest, black as coal rotted leaf compost I`ve ever seen. I mixed in some sandy forest dirt and made rows and finished a raised bed where my cucumbers and pole beans trellis is, filled multiple strawberry planters, then made a 3ft diameter 10 inch tall flat mound in my garden for Danvers Half Long Carrots. My garden soil is terrible so this was a huge time saving score!
I’m so proud of the onions I’m growing. They are huge. I planted the 3 varieties you offered back in October. They started slow then took off a couple weeks after I planted them and haven’t slowed down yet.
I chopped a hole out with axe today and stuffed a seed tater in there. Waiting for ground to thaw a bit before planting onions. Satire, just having some fun. Greg is great to follow. Have learned a whole lot from the Hoss !
Not sure what I've been doing wrong, but I planted from seed some Creole Red Onions last spring and let them grow all last summer in the shade to keep them from getting too hot. By Fall, I transplanted them into a garden bed along about middle October or early November. Here it is February, and they don't look much bigger than the onions I planted in the Fall.
Strawberry question… I planted the chandler variety I got from you this past fall. Plants look great. I followed your instructions to a tee. I pulled the runners and blooms off til the 20th of January. I’m getting a few strawberries ready now. Tons of small immature berries. Is it normal to have some ripen this early?
Thanks for the information. I have to order some calcium nitrate and get it on my onions soon. I'm in zone 8b Georgia. Are there signs to know if bulbing have started?
The onions we bought from you are looking great and ready to harvest. BUT, we have had continual rain and it continues to look like rain each day for the next week. Should I pull and let dry in the greenhouse then store; pull and store; or wait out? I would hate to lose them as they look wonderful.
For onions to form bulbs, they first need time to grow healthy leaves. The nutrients in the leaves help to support bulb growth. Onions will start bulbing once they're receiving enough sunlight. Bulbing is dependent on daylength and temperature, not the size or age of the plant, so choosing the proper varieties for your area is critical.
Today is Feb 25th, how many leaves should be on my short day onions? I've given them enough nitrogen to grow corn, what more can I do before our day length hits 12 hrs?
The perfect onion has 13 rings, so the goal is to create 13 leaves before the onion starts the second stage of its growing cycle by transferring the carbohydrates that are in the leaves to the rings of the onion (bulbing). Once the bulbing process begins, no more leaves are created.

Mine are all still standing tall. I can see some good bulbs already so I’m going to wait until the leaves fall.

Our rainy season for NW Oklahoma is March, April in to May...
We have ours going just can't plant them outside yet in our zone but it's almost time 👍

My onions only have 8-9 leaves here in South GA, will I still make some good sized onions?
