2022 Kia Sportage review: New midsize five seater SUV tested in Australia - better than CX-5, RAV4?

- The Kia Sportage 2022 model range has arrived, with S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line grades available. There are three engines to choose from - but no hybrid at the time of launch, sadly.
Instead, buyers have the choice of a turbo-diesel, turbo-petrol or a non-turbo petrol, and that latter base model motor has a choice of manual or automatic transmission, too!
But the engines are part of the story - this new generation Sportage is bigger, bolder and better than ever before. It has more advanced safety, more in-car technology, more space and comfort features, and a more aggressive look than before, too.
But the question is - does the 2022 Kia Sportage stack up for customers who might otherwise be considering a Hyundai Tucson, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-5 or - CarsGuide's reigning midsize SUV champion, the Toyota RAV4?
Richard Berry will answer those questions, and maybe even raise some questions too, in this detailed video review of the Kia Sportage 2022 model range in Australia.

Your style of car reviews always puts a smile on my face and gives me a laugh while providing information about the vehicle. I LOVE IT
Richard, you do the best car reviews! Love your sense of humour 🙂
The car is great looking, but the “presenter” and the presentation is awesome! Refreshing, entertaining and informative. Thanks
Looks like he got some upgrades of his own since that review,
I really like your style of reviews, I smiled through the whole review.
Cars Guide needs to ensure they don't lose Richard, Marcus, Nedahl and the editor in their team.
Others channels I used to watch all the time, are now lost in the distance.
Keep up the good work Cars Guide.
Amazing review love the green paint just wish there's more leather colour options
I like Richard’s video. Many video was quite fun yet useful.
Mate, a very joyful presenter you are. Good work.
I have to subscribe after this beautiful review, 👍
Good stuff Mate, even if I don't care for the car I watch the review for entertainment.
Was seriously looking at the Outlander until I saw your review - now the Kia Sportage has caught my eye - you squeezing into the library nook had me laughing out loud - would have loved a gear shift rather than buttons and please always fold don't the 2nd row seats to see if they lay flat - you're the best - Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Love your style. Just subscribed.
Love the review buddy 👍
Hi Richard, cud u plz do a comparo video between sportage, tuscon n cx5 diesel engines on performance n noise insulation
One of the best reviews ever ❤️👍🇿🇦
It's a great looking car :):):)
You are such an entertainer!!!
Loved it!!!
Hey mate, any chance you'd know the wading/fording depth of the different Sportage variants? Cheers
Richard berry's another good review,🚗👍
Best reviewer all of the time!
Richard, a shout out from the cyclist who called out to you @ Akuna Bay. Another great review. As Subaru continues to contract its product range, others will take their share. Look out for a steady stream of manual Foresters from Kia dealerships to wholesalers as manual Sportages go out the front door.
FFS. Scratch that comment about replacing manual Foresters. The penny just dropped that the manual is only fwd. Is an awd manual wagon that can tow such a dirty concept??!!
@@stewartmarler1416 look at sales stats, Australia is going the way of the US market, nobody wants a manual these days. I love them but most people simply aren't interested, and admittedly modern autos are very good, and can tow a decent amount. Good enough for most drivers is what the accountants go for
@CarsGuide would you review the Sportage Hybrid anytime soon please ? It has released already in Aus but can't seem to see any review to it
I don't know how to say this and sound positive.
THIS REVIEW IS HILARIOUS!!! 🤣🤣🤣
and really informative...
Love all your reviews guys!
Indeed , and I have watched it atleast 5 times 😂😂
CarExpert said the DSG is jerky. Richard says it's smooth.
i'd say it depends on how you drive
the kath and kim reference makes this video that much better
Love it.... Mate you are the best
Just bought the cerato gt 2021 MY 2022, same engine but makes more power, so happy with it 💁🏾♂️❤️
Hello, good work and talk.
.....keeps the Honda, Tuscan, Mazda CX5, Toyota Rav 4 awake at night. Hahaha 😅😅 soooo true
Hej Richard, you rated the Subi Forester better in the shootout.
This Petrol turbo..does it hv enough grunt?
Great review
02:56 what is the grade?
Great Report as always, picked up My 22 Sportage GT Diesel last Week Tuesday, very impressed how quiet is is in comparesment to the 2018 VW Golf Diesel I traded in, so far so good, just a little disappointed with the Price of Service, it's in German Cars League.
Sorry mate I am just curious about 7 years warranty. Doesn't it means free service?
@@nohjh93 no, 7 Years warranty has nothing to do with Service, but if You don't service Your Car by the Book You fortify Your Warranty, that's not just with KIA but with all Brands of Cars
Love to know, does the diesel version require a diesel exhaust fluid (Adblue)?
@@bjm5867 No, as far as i know it doesn't
@Josef Berghofer but you don't have to take it to kia you can take it to a qualified mechanic to be serviced if you like and keep your warranty
Heard never buy Kia as their engine always having issues and expensive to maintain, is this correct? I was so ready to go for test drive
Excellent review!
Now Back in 2017 the wheels reminds me of a Mitsubishi Outlander
Love the numbat reference! I actually googled the mating call, apparently it is a series of clicks.
Love it, this is the problem with all car journalism now, just the same thing over and over again. Great move that CarsGuide exposed it and said it out loud.
Not sure about the Citroen running lights, and we have no idea if it is still a 7-seater or only a 5-seater now as the review neglected to mention it.
😂😂😂 hats off to the presenter, this is informative yet so hilarious
How does this compare to the haval h6
Great presentation 👏 ... love to humour. Information, video, and length spot on 👌
👌 review
Did I miss that it has a 360deg camera, or it has none?
One of the best looking cars out there
Beautiful car! Love the EV6 too
Nice, they should call it Kia Boomerang
Does the rear seat have a 40/20/40 split or the 60/40 split?
60/40
I’m trying to decide if I like the look of this thing or not? I don’t know there’s just something that’s off putting with the design to me.
Aussie ChainBear?? Refreshing indeed!
hey does anyone know why there is no gt badge on the front grill, the steering and the seats on the australian models compared to european or us.
Different factories and slightly different designs
No test of CVT model.... I am guessing there was a reason one was not provided...
Always enjoying your video's your are funny laughable, also my favorite car reviewer, and love the new Kia Sportage, the basic models is very good value as well, lots of safety feature and still looks lovely!
I wonder why the entry level has wireless carplay and android auto but the top of the range is wired only?
Because the bottom level Kia doesn't come with Kia Sat Nav (there's disputes between apple/android about which nav should be default when wirelessly connected). The result is, a lot of cars that have OEM sat nav and carplay, don't get wireless
If this it a top end model, why does it have wipers stolen from an early 90’s car? Is that an Australian thing because I’m sure in other markets it’s not like that.
One thing missing is the power and noice level of the air conditioning, every reviewer missed this but it is very important for Australia.
Yep vital info for WA summers
The numbat mating call. LMAO! Instant like, subscribe and follow
This guy is awesome
10 out of 1 only buy too model good u make video only for us who buy top model , don’t worry about rest 9 people
I think they should have left the right side of dash with an analog cluster. Its looks silly having two digital and the right being super low rent (lower then what a analog one would have looked like). The looks are subjective. I am not a fan. I do not understand this fascination with digital dash's. A small LCD in the middle of an analog is sufficient.
Replying to my comment 1 year later and I have a GT Line on its way....lol
Please someone tell me the reliability of kia. I know that old generation kia is not reliable
For money they are asking I want 2.5l naturally aspirated engine and 2l turbo engine.
It's a pity we are getting short-changed on the quilted leather seats.
I agree, I pre ordered this car (GT-Line diesel) thinking it would have the quilted leather seats like overseas models, I'm quite disappointed that we're getting this bland boring design 😑
Funny car guide.
The back light looks like the outlander from 2014 and the front looks like they turned Mitsubishi dynamic shield chrome strip into a light.
Also The dash in this kia looks like it's copying tesla design language.
It looks more like a blatant copy than what you said about the outlander interior trying to be a Volkswagen.
Still enjoyed your review Mr Berry gold 🌟
the last one was a very good car and was so popular but this new one is going to sell like hot cakes I'm sure.
April/May 2022 delivery if you order today !!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve now seen the Kia Sportage, rego ENE35M, reviewed on three channels. But although the plate is the same on all channels, the details of the car changes:
CarExpert channel: ENE35M is a Steel Grey 1.6 turbo petrol
Chasing Cars channel: ENE35M is a Jungle Wood Green 2.0 diesel.
CarsGuide channel: ENE35M is still Wood Green but it was back to a 1.6 turbo petrol.
What’s going on?
That's not a standard Aussie license plate so perhaps it's a dealer's test drive plate, which can be moved between different vehicles on the lot?
@@Mububban23 I think all the footage showing a real number plate such as at 1:50 is supplied by Kia to TH-cam reviewers such as this channel. It's produced well in advance of the release. That's why all channels show the same number plate.
perhaps look again, the last Letter of the NSW Number plate changes on every Car/Colour
Delivery April/May if you order today !
Still haval h6 and haval jolion scored higher overall than this Kia. Plus you can get a whole lot more for your money with haval plus save on cheaper capped service costs too
Roger that captain
this car is so gorgeous
If only the plastic bezels around those screens was larger....
Hideous
It's Way longer than a Wagon like looking CRV
While I commend Kia for having cap priced servicing they are a long way from Toyota. A RAV4 is cheaper to service than a Cerato!
Fair point but servicing every 6 months is a bit too much. Also isn't Toyota still giving 3 years warranty?
@@hugoribeiro6549 No, the majority of Toyotas have a whatever comes first 12 Month or 15000km Service
Somehow I though Australia is completely locked down
For Australia to be locked down it first needs to be real.
@@Daniel-dg3np Lol
I feel it's a mis-step to downgrade the dash on the lower models. It's just too much of a downgrade and looks super cheap compared to the GT or even the rest of the car design. Do they give you the option to upgrade?
Agree 100%. However I would rather have a analog dash then that horrible digital one the base comes with.
if you can get me 2.0 litre petrol FWD 22 sportage for $41,500 ill buy it! they all want 45k
What’s the purpose of spending 50000 of its less powered and slow
I have driven this car and gearbox is far from good and its completley unpredictable and kinda anoying, engine is too small 250 or 300 hp and at least 350 nm of torqe whould suit this car much better, other than that and the price its a solid car.
That's why diesel is the pick
Is this guy high or what?😂
Do we need the half-assed comedy routines in car reviews ??
its face looks like this emoji 😆😆😆
Looks like subaru forrestor
From which angle ?!
3 engines and none EV, very very disappointing. Come on Kia, take a stand and stop making fuel burners, give Tesla a challenge and make more EVs, especially SUVs 🙏
could not compete with outlander
Personally, the Play School humour is very off putting. From me - a regular review would be better, but going by the comments, I may be the odd one out.
Prices are BS
We where tossing between the haval h6 and the sportage , And we went with the Haval.
Saved 15k, Better and quicker Engine,
Drives quicker and with same Comfort,
and the interior is almost the same.
and one is chinese vs korean. I know which one I'd rather.
😂😍
Looks like they copied Mitsubishi's Dynamic Shield lol hahahahahahaahhaah
Richard definitely needs a numbat tattoo.
Hahaha 😅😅😀
Lol
😂
Not sure why this guy is acting like a bafoon at times, completely unnecessary otherwise nice work, the GT Sportage is impressive.
10 out of 10 for design ??? you cannot be serious ..... even in the GT-line they stick with those "ugly as sin" grey plastic wheel arches and generally the car looks as plain as an arrowroot biscuit . i do like the front 1/4 of the car but after that it looks dull and pedestrian .
Mate it's the best looking SUV 👌 out there
really bad. keep it professional
This is an ugly one.
This hipster guy trying too hard to be a cute Nic Cage but forgot to mention the GT line incldes ventilated seat both driver and passneger. Nor he did not do the most important thing when a wagon/SUV REVIEW SHOULD INCLUDE:put down the rear seat and reveal the maximum cargo capacity and floor layout
What do you base your comment on ?
Childish presenter
I think it looks ugly. My definition of good looking is Tiguan
Tiguan? Lol. Boring as hell.
