  • Welcome to Episode 16 where I go over my experience with both the Oculus Rift S and Valve Index headset. Was it worth the upgrade? Should you also leave your Rift S behind? Or for first time buyers, is it worth dropping a grand on your first headset? I answer all those questions in this video.

i recently used the Index for the first time after 3+ months of using the Oculus Quest, and i couldn't shut up about how good everything looked. the higher FOV + framerate + pixel density makes such a huge difference, especially if you're used to a cheaper headset

My first headset was a Lenovo Explorer and every time I put on my quest I marvel at how much better everything looks and how much more comfortable it is visually and being cordless. I hear about how awesome the Index is and it makes me really curious but for now I think I'll be sticking with my quest and Virtual Desktop. Especially since being wireless let me go from my 4x4 playspace in my home office to my 12x8 playspace in my how gym without moving my PC. Perhaps in a year or two there will be a wireless index solution or a more comparable quest and I'll be able to join you all in the realm of the highly pixelated.

Nice summary and I mostly agree. Rift S is super solid and the best budged headset if you don't have the money or want to wait 8+ weeks for an Index. I've never had driver issues however the mic and headphones are total ass. Also don't get if you are not close to average IPD it's just going to strain your eyes. It does feel more comfortable and has less noticeable god rays than the index but just about everything else the index beats it out. I might also add the Rift S is easier to travel with if you want to take it too a friends house as well.

That being said, for the OP, I don't see why you would want to stop using VRChat all because the headset isn't the top of the line. Remember that many people's introduction to VR was the Quest before the link functionality was added, and to them, it was still great.

I'm still on the Rift and I've luckily never had *any* of those issues you've mentioned PHIA.
The closest I've had was connection issues that only occurred when moving my equipment across country to visit relatives for a longer period of time when I then had to re-setup everything.
    But that was about it.
I otherwise hear a lot of complaints about the Index'es controllers breaking way too easy.
For instance one of my streamer friends have had his break 7 times in total so far.
Knowing that and having owned my Rift for 2 years without any major incidents with the exception of me breaking my right controller once because I was an idiot trying to clean it where I shouldn't; I will say... Yea no thx; I think I'll stay with my Rift and if I do upgrade at one point I will never sell my Rift.
With that said, keep up the great work making these videos PHIA.

Literally taking a huge leap from small hp laptop to my new gaming pc that I'd say is worth investing. 3D Modeling, Illustration and Graphic Design is up my alley that I want to run and get into as well and I feel vr is one incredible tool and experience that supports that.

I love my Index and it's features over the other HMDs, especially the off-the-ear speakers (not really headphones) as it allows you to hear more naturally (and around you if needed) and retains no heat around your ears.
On the other hand, the black levels of the Index's LCDs suck. I mean, really suck. Its more like a very dark gray. Its not as noticeable in games like Beat Saber (games with lots of objects or bright colors on-screen); however, in games with night scenes (Walking Dead Saints and Sinners) it can be slightly annoying. I believe this was the trade off with these LCD panels as they can be set up to 144Hz.
The soon-to-be released HP Reverb G2 might be a good choice for those wanting the best of both worlds (Valve tech + no external trackers). HP colab'd with Microsoft and Valve to design it - its a Windows Mixed Reality headset (inside out tracking) but uses the same speakers from the Index and Valve designed lenses. It will feature the highest resolution panels vs all the other mainstream, consumer HMDs (barring the Pimax). The only issue with inside-out-tracking is that your play area needs to be well lit, as opposed to the Index/Vive bc of their external trackers.

I'm so curious if you're a voice actor.
If not, your voice is perfect for it. English dubs on anime, or small but awesome animation projects. Your voice is cute, clear, and it has character! :3
Also, I came from an og vive to the index. The upgrade was amazing! Loving it. My only complaint would be the speakers. They aren't perfect, but they are quite convenient.
Also, with the controllers, I have issues with my pinky a lot of times. I learned I have to move my hand down a little. Just enough to get over the pinky sensor. For a guy, I guess my hands are just smaller then others. Oh well though.
