I daily a 1997 miata I bought it last year for £2150, I had to spend £2000 on bodywork had to get new brake discs new suspension joints and springs, new clutch etc… ended up spending about £3000 to get the car completely fixed up. So I spent about £5000-£6000 buying and fixing a 27 year old car with 123k miles. (1.8L engine btw) and it works great. No problems at all after driving 8k miles not broken down once, sailed the yearly MOT test.
Never broke down since I first bought it. So I practically have a brand new NA miata for 1/6th the price of a brand new 2L ND miata. The best part is I don’t have any stupid technology in my car spying on me or just weighing me down.
As someone who is now 20, (I was fresh 19 when I first bought the car), it definitely felt risky at first but it’s probably the best thing I ever done because I’ve always wanted a miata. Only thing was I always wanted an NB but recently found out they rust so much worse than the NA so settled for that instead.

all these points are solid. Old cars are just cheaper and more fun. You can also usually tell that a person with a classic drives a cool car because they love cars as opposed to a person with a modern sports car, where there's a good chance its just a status symbol.

my father has a Volvo 850R and had a Mercedes CLA45 AMG for around 6 years and I learned to love the Volvo over the AMG. The AMG has more power but it lacks so much in emotions as it’s a “boring” 4 cylinder, full of electronic nannies and a DCT. On the other hand I feel much more engaged with the Volvo as the 5 cylinder is much rawer and sounds so great while also having more fun with its manual transmission. And I can’t have fun with the AMG without breaking the law while the Volvo is always fun

I have already told people I would never buy anything past 2014. My mom’s w204 facelift has never given her a problem and she treats it like garbage. The reason he had a problem with that pre facelift w204 is because the m272 has balancing shafts that can go bad and none of it was refined. The facelift models are the most bulletproof Mercedes of that era as long as you fix the subframe and you don’t skip any maintenance intervals. I have a 2007 a4 b7 3.2 6speed and even though it scares the shit out of me with a code once in a while but it has never left me stranded. I also could change the oil easily and change spark plugs with minimal effort on that car. I do know that the timing will be expensive and a pain in the ass but besides that it will last longer than most newer cars.

I'm 39 and have owned "old" cars for the same reasons you articulated (I currently have a '91 BMW E30, a '69 BMW 2002, and an '08 BMW E90, the newest car I've had in years). I financed a new car one time, and leased a new car one time. The car payment + insurance costs were far greater than what it cost me to own 2 or 3 older cars simultaneously, including what it cost me in parts to keep them on the road. I think when you start doing more of your own maintenance you'll really be stoked on just how much money you're saving over financing a new car.

Im 28 so a little bit older than you but I feel the same way. I have 2 exotics from the 2000s and a few 90s offroaders, new cars are just boring and stale. There is something so charismatic about older cars in general. In the age of every influencer having a wrapped Huracan or GT3 RS, I have always preferred having a well maintained older car. I would only buy a newer car if I had kids and cared about their safety. Newer supercars are just not exciting to me, they're just bragging rights for lap times and numbers. They don't feel visceral and rare like older supercars.

Same here my next car is gonna be a 2006+ Mercedes Benz with the M113 or the M273, all I want that modern cars have is the shift buttons/paddles on my steering wheel and maybe an AMG appearance package, then I’d be set until I buy a older Mustang (most likely a Cobra), new cars suck to me and I rather have older/used

I'm on the same train. I used to think modern cars were cool. Since I bought an Miata NA 1.8 in 2016, that has changed completely. I drove the car for 8 years as a daily and apart from a new timing belt and a stuck brake caliper, I haven't had a single repair. Besides, I also had modern cars, Golf 7.5 GTI, Cooper S. Compared to an old car, most modern cars are boring to drive. You are too isolated from the environment. Everything is digital and there is too much technology. I now drive a Saab 93 SE from 2002 as my daily. I only paid 3000$ for it. A fantastic car. Well equipped, comfortable, safe and it has that certain something for me. That's all you need. I also drive an 1989' Honda CRX ED9 (124hp) and a 1988 Toyota MR2. I couldn't be happier.

I'm 36 and although my bank says I can afford a £1100 monthly payment for a car I would never do that! The depreciation, among stuff, that I really don't like like downsizing, questionable reliability, crazy complexity, tablets all round, worse materials, than in the past. What I would do if I had to finance a car, I would buy something special. Still pretty modern, around 12-15 years old, Japanese, four door with 2UR-GSE under the bonnet. :) It holds value really well, it's reliable, fun, usable as daily, good for longer journeys. MPG is less concern and prices for parts, as you usually don't spend that much that often for repairs anyway. So yeah, that would be only reason to finance a car for me. :)
