  • @robins5828

    I love how Nick Offerman can keep a totally straight face while delivering such dry, pithy humor. Plus his advice was helpful for a beginner. A good reminder to keep it simple and not bite off more than you can chew. I would LOVE to make one of those giant slab tables, but I know that's way too ambitious at this point. I've learned a lot just making little projects like a bookshelf from pine planks (FYI, 12 inch pine from HD that's not totally dry will cup a *lot*. That's how I learned to use a hand planer lol.). I can always see the flaws in anything I make, but it's still more solid and unique than a piece of particle board stuff from IKEA, and hey, even if it's not perfect it does its job of holding books just fine:)

    • @yunofun
      @yunofun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keeping it simple is something I wish more people would do. At least for beginners. I teach a beginners woodworking workshop, the number of people who come to me who have never made anything more than a cutting board who have thousands of dollars in power tools when all they have made so far is a cutting board never ceases to amaze me.
      There are always two points that I stress. First is start with a few cheap(relative to power tools) hand tools. Not only does it help you avoid the sunk cost fallacy but also you tend to make smaller mistakes.
      The second is that no matter what you are going to make mistakes. The key isn't to be perfect every time, the key is to learn to hide the mistake.

    This was one of the most humbling forms of communicating a love for a craft. I've always been interested in woodworking and recently I had the opportunity to work in an industrial shop. Unfortunately the person I was working with was unbearable, and greatly discouraged my interest in it. Now every time I try woodworking it takes me back to that abusive environment. This healed me a little bit. Thank you.
