Thirteen seasons isn't long enough? People are upset because Howie was smart enough to get out with his health intact.

The difference between Howie Long and other great Raiders is that he was as tough as any of them but he wasn't a head case. Howie always had class. Something that was blatantly lacking in other Raiders and fans as well. Case in point, the guy in this video with the Raider shield on his melon.

There's a belief (untrue) you have to be a psycho to be a Raider. Not so. Long, Jim Plunkett, Art Shell, Mike Haynes, Daryl LaMonica, Tom Flores (probably others) were 'eagle scouts' Others like Matt Millen, Skip Thomas, Cliff Branch, Ken Stabler, Reggie Kinlaw, they were what's known as 'characters...with character.' Then there were the psychos, too numerous to mention. What I mean is the Raiders just wanted you to be yourself (WHATEVER that was) and then play your guts out on Sunday.

“Class” is not something one would associate with players or fans of any team of this brutal sport.

Not a Raiders fan, but Howie will always be my favorite man to have donned the silver and black. In my family, he made my grandma a fan of the team (long before their move to Vegas, the area my grandparents live now; back then, they lived in New York) in his heyday not just because he was a great player, but because she had a crush on him, too!

Greg Townsend got all those sacks because of Howie Long being double team and sometimes triple team it freed up Townsend to rush the passer but Greg Townsend was a great defensive end make no mistake about it with Howie Long being the Wildman and then throw in Lyle Alzado aggression with a short temper and you got one hell of a group on the defensive line

Steve Largent is probably the most underrated player. Yes he made the Hall of Fame, but he is still relatively unknown. Led the NFL in receiving yards until Jerry Rice beat him. Was the reason Rice wanted number #80 Had arguably the greatest hands of all time. When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception. He also holds the distinction as the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions in his career.

Old Man Willie played the majority of his days as a RAIDER so basically he was a RAIDER through and through. Mike Haynes played half his career with the Patriots and the second half with the RAIDERS so you could go either way. A last example would be Jerry Rice, he would be considered as a 49er despite his 3 or so years as a RAIDER (3 excellent years, but he wasn't a 'long time' RAIDER that you would compare with other 'long time' RAIDERS).

into a power house. He led them to a 13-1 record and a Super Bowl berth in 1967, a 12-2 record in 1968 ( lost to Jets
in the Playoffs, and went 12-1-1 in 1969 losing to K.C. in the Playoffs. That 36-4-1 W/L mark is still the best 3 year

I'm probably in the minority but I'd call Howie Long the #1 RAIDER player in team history. From his rookie season to his final game Long was a beast, and everyone knew it. He was relentless, a pass rushing DL that could play NT and the run with the best of them. IMO only a handful of guys, like Joe Greene and Reggie White, are ahead of Long... and not by much.

If we ranked raiders players based on how much of a true raider they were, lyle alzado would be #1, no doubt. Absolutely murderous on a football field, and lyle was damn nice

Do you remember that 5 sack game Khalil Mack had against the Donkeys when he took over the game?
That was Howie about 4 times a year.
Townsend got more sacks because he played his entire career with Howie getting double and triple teamed next to him.

Yeah NFL Films didn't distinguish that Howie Long is an "LA RAIDER", his power and competitiveness was straight out of the "Oakland" Raiders playbook, but he played in Los Angeles other than his rookie campaign in Oakland. He helped define LA Raider football.

Any ranking from #1-#10 will do but you HAVE TO INCLUDE Howie on that list. Howie was all action and zero posturing. At least not until he delivered the game-breaking sack or tackle.

Townsend was great but he's the sack leader BECAUSE he played opposite Howie, no question about it. That's a fact. Great pass rushers often do NOT lead in sacks because they are double or triple teamed every play, which means more sacks for everyone else!
    Not complicated.

What other player for the raiders destroyed other teams game plan because they had to focus on one guy for the whole game ok maybe one Bo jackson. Greg ya he had more sacks its easy when you just play one position but Howie played every position down the line and was great at every one but not Greg. Howie was a threat you couldn't prepare for you can't try. He is the definition of a raider. Put one two three guys on him and still couldn't be stop how many interceptions did Greg have. So ya he should be #1 but #2 is good too.

Only guys besides Art Shell and Gene Upshaw I’d put ahead of Howie would be Mike Haynes and he only played 7 years with the Raiders

Howie Long was everything nasty about the Raiders in the 80s, he's number 2 in my book, but technically he's at 4 on this list.

Measuring a defensive lineman’s effectiveness by sack numbers is lazy. The 2000 Ravens didn’t have a lot of sacks. Does that mean they weren’t a great defense?

People don't realize that the sack number was so low because he wasn't always used to pass rush. He was used as a defensive tackle at times which doesn't help in the sack department. He would be much more celebrated today with advanced metrics
