Evil Otto is named after a Security Chief, who worked at Alan McNeil's (Berzerk's creator) former employer, Dave Nutting Associates. Otto liked to reprimand employees, and smile at them while doing so. He was a security guard jerk, who enjoyed pissing people off, while smiling at them, so that is where the smiley face and Otto name came from. The Otto concept had nothing to do with the dislike of 70s smiley faces..
Absolutely EPIC classic game. I always thought that Berzerk had a dual joystick control panel. One for movement and the other one fired your laser in one of 8 directions. Of course its been a long time since I played an original Berzerk cabinet arcade game. Thanks for the video buddy. Love seeing all those original classic arcade games.
They're probably referring to the fact that two players died in the early 80s while playing Berzerk. One of them had a heart condition, and not enough is known about the first guy to know whether he did or not, but they both died of heart attacks while playing Berzerk. That's what I was referring to when I said it's not for the feint of heart. The one in 1982 was at Friar Tuck's in Calumut City, IL and it was still open 20 years later. I always wanted to go there for the history.
Freaking awesome! I love Berzerk! I've only ever seen two machines of it, so I'm glad I played them when I did see them back in 1988. As much as I love Berzerk, I must admit that it's not for the feint of heart.
That joystick is a 8 way optical. Only four opto sensors and they kinda work like switch closures on a conventional stick. I just bought a berzerk that has fully working original hardware and a Jrok in place for reliability. Has the original stick, which was wonky from a damaged capacitor on the pcb on the stick assembly.
Out of any 80's arcade game, Berzerk is always my go to. The speech is memorable, and funny, even Futurama used "Intruder Alert" in one episode. Other than the annoying Evil Otto, the game can be hard as hell once you get to the blue robots that shoot multiple bullets very fast, and can gang up on you. Shame the original boards aren't that reliable because it's one of a few arcade games i'd love to have
I think the JROK boards are AWESOME! I dunno, I think this is where we are going. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the problematic pcbs are slowly all re-created in FPGA. Zoo Keeper / QIX anyone?
Didn't the original cabinets use 2 joysticks for control? One moved the player and the other fired the laser so you could simultaneously move and fire in different directions. It's still an iconic classic arcade game and "must-have" for anyone building a retro gaming system.
You should come visit the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY. They have a museum section about the history of video games with some machines on display, etc. I can get you a behind-the-scenes tour as well. :)
Peter's death was the one that really got people since he didn't smoke or do drugs and he was a well mannered 18-year-old. They did, however, find two week old scar tissue on his heart that no one knew about previously. So little is known about Jeff's case in comparison to Peter's, though you would think he would have to have had a heart condition as well since he also had a heart attack like Peter did.
I'm hearing Q-Bert / Mad Planets is next and there's rumours of some vector games too which would be awesome, plus your buddy Adam doing the Pole Position board which we can't wait for over here. My PP cab is super reliable with extra fans and split power etc but would love PP2.
Lol I was waiting to pounce on this. XD ha. Love your videos. At 3:19 in your video im pretty sure if i saw that Id of thought i died and went to heaven. Also im surprised you didn't mention the berzerk curse.
Yeah-Jeff Dailey (according to legend) in 1981 and Peter Burkowski (Hope I spelled his last name right) @ Friar Tucks in 1982. Jeff's death was extra creepy-according to the story his score on the game when he died was 16,660 points (NOTE: the mark of the beast [666] surrounded by the basic binary coding [ 0&1] numbers (insert scary music here!). BTW- Stern Electronics was founded around 1976 by both Gary Stern and his dad after they bought Chicago Coin and other assets.
Great video man. Cant wait to see that pacman all done up..Nice. Can you provide a link for that vinyl? Im looking for a cheap alternative. Any help. Thks
I just did a video on a JROK conversion on a Robotron on my other channel, it seems to have spawned a little controversy on a UK forum but that's understandable. If you want total originality, stick with the original hardware and learn it, they can be bulletproofed. If you want reliability, go JROK. Either way you need space in the basement so if you're selling Paperboy........ lol :)
Great video John, but you made a spelling error in the title - Berzerk, not Berzek. From what I know, Berzerk has killed at least 2 people. It also has a song made about it. Buckner and Garcia - Goin' Berzerk. Played it a lot when I was really young. It vanished from the arcades by the time the 90's hit and now I know why. Why wants to shell out money to keep an old game working when Street Fighter II earns 50X as much.
wow Funspot reminds me of the arcades on 42nd street in New York City. There extinct now. Anyway can you give me the ebay sellers name or search term that you used on ebay because im looking for the same type vinyl for my mame arcade,
Check out arcade-dot-souzaonline-dot-com for his 4-in-1 ROM mod and HSS kit. I just installed this on my original pac PCB and love it! software control menu and dipswitch settings too. Very cool.

Hi Komet163B
The voice compression in the game was innovative at the time and reportedly cost $1,000 per word for each of the 30 different words in the game.
I have used a sample of "Kill the humanoid, attack the intruder" as my ringtone.

Robotron. The follow-up game.
You know what I just realized. This man just drove miles to a arcade and just played one game.
Berzerk is my all time fave arcade game! Could play all night on the quarters I'd line up on the marquee.
I'd love to find one for my home!
same here, Berzerk is one of the best video games, so underrated...

The best thing about Berzerk is the voices! It still sounds so cool.
TOTO!!! Love isn't always on time.

This game although I never played it but it's somehow gives that Tron Vibe for me every time I see it

Original boards can be repaired, but the JROK FPGA is exactly original. Most games on location a running it anyway.
More pac! Love your videos!
This FPGA thing is awesome. I'd love to learn this tech.
Every time i see John going to fun spot i always hear mappy noises
I think I just died and went to arcade heaven! I swear I will visit this place soon....
You would love the Silverball Museum in Asbury Park NJ. 200 pinball machines plus old arcade games
I think the JROK boards are AWESOME! I dunno, I think this is where we are going. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the problematic pcbs are slowly all re-created in FPGA. Zoo Keeper / QIX anyone?

That would have been great.

Yeah, the voices are AMAZING.

Spelling has been fixed. Thanks for catching that. I didn't know Berzerk killed two people! Whoa.
I like how you charismatically nerd out on these videos.

Bobaflott, love the voices. the parody on Futurama is awesome "fork em over!"
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the games most infamous bit of history in your intro, John.
You mean the heart attack guy?
Lol I was waiting to pounce on this. XD ha. Love your videos.
At 3:19 in your video im pretty sure if i saw that Id of thought i died and went to heaven.
Also im surprised you didn't mention the berzerk curse.
yeah, I'll put up a vid about that probably this week.
That huge arcade looks better than Disney world
I've never really cared for berzerk, but I respect it too :)

This was a pretty fun game on the vectrex.
WTF!!! Otto isn't supposed to come out until two seconds per robot but will randomly come out earlier. He came out early in every f'ing room for you!

Holy wrong joystick. Not talking the original bat stick, but not even a red ball leaf switch? Bunk.
You're not even going to input your initials into Berzerk? I bet the next person that walked by, input something like ASS. lol
JOHN'S ARCADE
...................dubstepDONE
Where?
Good game
How did you not die of a heart attack?
blue joystick on Berzerk looks like rubbish!
How much you pay for power
