  • Today's special edition unboxing review comes to you straight from the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Nissan gave us exclusive access to its new Sentra Nismo and we jumped at the opportunity. Starting off with the basic Sentra sedan, Nissan handed it over to its in-house performance division, Nismo, for a few modifications. Power? How about a 1.6-liter direct-injected turbocharged inline-four with 188 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or a CVT. Yes, go for the manual. It's cheaper and, above, makes the car more fun to drive.
    Take one look at the Sentra Nismo and it's obvious this isn't your typical Sentra. Inside and out Nismo has added a ton of unique bits, like new front and rear fascias, 18-inch alloy wheels, Nismo-badged seats and an Alcantara and leather-wrapped steering wheel. You should be excited. Pricing still hasn't been released just yet but we imagine this will start off at around $25k. Yes, Nismo has just built an affordable performance car. Life's awesome. Enjoy the review!

    The interior looks much better, cleaner layout and more logical than the Civics.

    It's no rocket but i've seen people get 235whp and 230ftlb torque from just an exhaust, intake and a tune running more boost. 1.6 is small but you guys forget about the tune ability with a turbo. Also remember its not competing with a focus st and others because sentra was never meant for high performance. If you want power from nissan get a 350 or 370 with the vq series.

    Shame they didn't opt for a 200+ HP engine in this. That's what everyone was really looking forward to...

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Everyone keeps mentioning that but I wonder if the Sentra, given its aging platform and only so much that could be done to tune the suspension, could handle 200+ hp. But say if it could, my guess is that Nissan couldn't keep pricing low enough. Just my two cents.

    • @LordTrayus
      @LordTrayus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They advertised it on the concept car. If they moved that concept car directly to production without nerfing the engine, it would've been an instant hit. When asked why the engine is so weak, they said "We needed to keep the price down." Complete garbage! At the 25k price point, that car is way too expensive for the power that drive train offers. At 240hp and 240 torque in the concept model, 25k would've been a steal but I would've totally been okay with paying 28-30k for that car because it could easily have competed with the luxury sports sedan. And so would a lot of other people.
      Nissan screwed up on both fronts with the production model. It's neither a performer or a cost effective car.

      I bought this car. Nothing embarrassing here. 0 to 60 in 7 sec is not slow. I've seen Veloster Turbo with 200hp doing it slower. Nismo is quite overlooked because people like you see the spec sheet over everything. This car is roomy, drop dead gorgeous, practical, quick, handles superbly and solidly built. Give it a road test. Then say it has embarrassing performance. 😉

    The guy doing this preview has to be paid by Nissan. This guy is the only one excited for $25,000 188 hp car. All he has mentioned about the Nismo Sentra is badges spoilers, interior and wheels. Last I checked Nismo is about performance.

    Nissan design team:
    Gilbert- We should probably do something about the fact the 370z is going on 9 years of production with no major changes...
    Kevin- Fuck you Gilbert, the plan is to throw a Nismo badge on everything. The Juke wasn't fuckin ugly enough, so we're going with a Corolla- i mean Sentra now.

    This car, unfortunately, fucking blows. It's no more powerful than the new Sentra SR Turbo, and it's not really anything more powerful than the SE-R from 10+ years ago. The only positive here is they are finally embracing manual transmissions again. Nissan has lost their way, and it sucks because my first car was a 1990 Nissan Maxima SE

    • @buildmorefarms1007
      @buildmorefarms1007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I drove the SR turbo, it is plenty quick and fun....but it lacks the sport suspension...that is where the Nismo fills the gap.

    • @TomesEsq
      @TomesEsq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      buildmorefarms100 You can get a much better and more powerful car like a Fiesta ST or the new Honda Civic Hatchback in Sport Trim (both cars offered in 6-speed manual) for a shitload less money.

    • @buildmorefarms1007
      @buildmorefarms1007 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** The Fiesta is ugly and it isnt much quicker than this (maybe a 1/10th or 2 of a second) The Civic hatch is also a design mess and the interior bits are so cheap. To me this looks decent and it has more hp than a Civic hatchback.

    • @TomesEsq
      @TomesEsq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      buildmorefarms100 First of all, exterior design is subjective (I happen to love both designs, and hate this Sentra). Second, I don't think you've driven a FiST, because the ride and drive is in a different league than this car. Also, the new interior on the Civic is top-quality so I don't know what you're talking about. The fact is that this Nissan is too expensive for what you're getting. I drive a fully-loaded GTI w/ Performance Package, which costs about 10k more than this Sentra, but you can get into a base GTI for this Sentra's money and it will outdrive and outclass this car beyond compare.

    • @buildmorefarms1007
      @buildmorefarms1007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** You would be wrong I did drive the FiST...wasnt impressed by it, it is ugly in my opinion, if you love it so much buy it? It was decently quick and fun but SO ugly and small! The Civic cup holder area plastics are horribly cheap...Im guessing YOU havent been in one! Price of the Nismo hasnt even been officially announced yet so you arent basing your comments on any concrete facts...GTi? Dont get me started on all the problems it has ..Seriously if you hate the Nismo so much why are you hear watching the video?

  • @mistamaog

    • @postalpancho
      @postalpancho 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your better off just sticking with the S type. The Nismo is just a few red stickers and and slightly nicer appearance package. If you want to drop 25k your better off just getting a GTI, FOCUS ST, or just save a bit more and walk off with a WRX. I don't see how this car plans to compete, it is a couple years late, overpriced, and underpowered. Your S type could probably out handle this by just upgrading your wheels and tires to a wider stickier compound. There is absolutely nothing impressive about this car when you compare it to the competition other than it has a bit more trunk room.

      The Focus has a tiny interior -- A Sentra can carry 5 adults comfortably..... The Focus can't even carry 4 well (the backseat is tight with a low roofline). The Sentra isn't as fast, but is just a better overall car.... I actually traded a Focus into a Sentra Turbo SR. The Sentra is better equipped and has a much more solid feel with much better safety ratings.

    This car looks good and has the right touches with some awesome suspension parts from Japan. unfortunately it's chassis wasn't designed to be sporty from the beginning since underneath sits the Nissan Slyphy the true rival of the Toyota Corolla.
    Nissan USA design team did an awesome job on the new body panels for all the Sentra models also recalibrated and changed some parts; they even gave it the Juke engine but couldn't add more power for safety reasons do to the chassis not being designed for it.
    so basically your'e getting a turbo Corolla from Nissan. not a bad deal if you don't care about performance numbers.

    Why are they holding back on the specs? A GTI has 200 hp and they sticker right around 25k and a sunroof is available. Although I do like how tastefully restrained they were on the exterior. This is a very nice car, but not a good value when you can get VW GTI with cash on the hood at the end of the model year. This Nismo they will put 1-2 at bigger dealers and have needles markup.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess is that Nissan simply couldn't make the business case for a more powerful engine for whatever reason. However, I'd still wait and see just how this things handles. It's tuned by Nismo, after all.

  • @JohnnyUkeOfficial
    @JohnnyUkeOfficial 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would imagine this would be priced probably at $24,995. But the new Honda Civic Si will probably be close to that price with a 220HP engine.
    I'd wait for the 2017 Civic Si. Honda makes some of the best manual transmissions, especially the Si. You probably can also consider the 2017 Elantra Sport which starts at $22,000 with a 201HP Turbo engine.

      CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars Yes, the Nismo suspension should make the car handle extremely well. But I believe the Civic Si will give you more bang for the buck. if Nissan did a 2.0 turbo it would have been able to complete. This car isn't going to fair well against the GTI, focus ST, SI, and WRX. This car won't even be able to hold a candle to the fiest ST.
      This car doesn't even come close to what any of its competitors have been doing for years.

    Civic EX-Turbo $21,500* (174hp - 167tq) 2,900lbs
    Fiesta ST $21,600 (197hp* - 202tq*) 2,720lbs*
    How much less weight are we talking about if the Nismo version is the revised model, It couldnt be by much? The Sentra is just too darn heavy. Would be better if it was 100lbs lighter. I like the styling of Nismo and SR turbo but the Civic Si might be a better deal, probably more fun too. What in the world is Nissan doing, they should have just done the IDX instead of milking it's fans with "Sport versions" that don't have much of an edge on its competitors.

      It's not hate, I'm just upset because I had higher expectations for this car. The Fiesta is the oldest car, and the civic is newer than the Sentra. What does age have to do with value and packaging when they're both being sold as 2017 models? The Fiesta ST still has the upper hand, uh look... The point im making is the ECO box Civic EX-Turbo is basically the main competitor to the Nismo Sentra, the Si will probably bring HP to Nismo RS Juke levels. But which one would you buy just out of curiosity? On paper the Fiesta ST would be my choice but I always liked how the Sentra looks. You can't ignore the Spring and Shock package on the Nismo but I wonder what the Civic Si will bring to the table.

      @@staircast The Fiesta ST has the upper hand? Have you even sat inside one? The thing is a shitbox packed with cheap plastic and flimsy handles. My SR Turbo feels like a fucking Infiniti by comparison (yes, I test drove all 3). Granted, the Honda was nicer but Honda dealers just don't budge on price. With incentives, I got the SR Turbo for $17k out the door. With the 6 speed manual, it's a badass car.

    Nissan has not answered the call! The Nissan Nismo Juke RS has 215hp and the AWD version 211hp, why Nissan couldn't come up with the same power? This "new" Nissan Sentra Nismo is basically a Sentra RS with a little bit of make up and that's all. Very disappointed! I've been a Nissan customer for over 15 years, who was excited about getting the new Nismo but after seeing the final product, I'm gonna go over to Honda or Subaru. Bye, bye Nissan

    188hp please the Jetta GLI will destroy this so call called pocket rocket sedan. The GLI is much better looking and when comparing prices and features the GLI will you get more for your money as well as performance. Nissan used to be on top of their game, but now they are falling way behind in the pack. My dad's Camry would embarrass thing hell even the Quest would leave it too and that's a damn god damn minivan. At this rate you might as well call that a NISMO too at least it has the engine that is worthy of wearing the name. Hey maybe even a NISMO note, or just put NISMO on their whole entire models since it's just nothing more than an accessory line than performance. To sum this up get a the Jetta GLI, Civic Si, Focus ST, Golf GTI, even a Fiesta ST is quicker than this. Wake up Nissan! last time I checked it's not 2003 anymore.

    @ronochow 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your enthusiasm...but it's really exaggerated for this car. It's decent at best, but really lacking power. It doesn't even break 200 hp or torque. Ford Focus ST is way above this car's level, so is the civic Si. WRX would smoke this thing, so would the GTI or GLI...like are you serious? At best, this competes with the civic higher end turbo charged sedan or hatch, 1.8 tsi jetta, Mazda 3 GT, but even then those cars have more creature comforts and nicer base looks this car doesn't have. The nismo enhancements only pretty up the base Sentra, but the base Sentra just isn't all that pretty.
    If you drive it I guess it might be decent to throw into a corner...but at the end of the day a BRZ or GT86 might be funner and even those cars leave people wanting more power.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before everyone determines that the Sentra Nismo is a failure, it should be driven first. Yes, it's not as powerful as it probably should have been, but that's only half of it. The other half is the Nismo-tuned suspension. My gut feeling is that the Sentra Nismo will be redeemed when it comes to handling.

      If NISMO spent more time tuning and less time slapping badges and stickers everywhere maybe they could have found time to to get a better engine. Your essentially buying a $5k appearance package. Don't let the vlogers fool you. This car can't stack up to anything in it's price range. Like seriously..... the WRX has almost 100 more horses than this and and AWD system. I don't see how this thing has a chance.

    let's see, focus st, nah too much, ~250hp
    fiesta st still way more power ~200hp
    civic si still more power ~200hp
    dart! the dart has 184hp. it costs ~23k

    Nissan weird decision here again. The always do shit like this like the did with the qx80 and turned into the new armada when the qx80 is becoming outdated. Why bring a nismo Sentra when this Sentra is in its second half of it life cycle. So how long do the expect to sell this for, another four years?...when the car only has two years left. Next thing, not even 200hp are you kidding me.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason why Nissan is bringing the Nismo version now is exactly what you said: because this generation Sentra is on its way out. Nissan figured that it's sold enough Sentras at this point that the money can be allocated for this niche model. Remember, business is business.

    • @keino111689
      @keino111689 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars yes but dont you want a nismo sentra in the same years and model that a regular sentra is being made. this will do for the next two years i guess but this is a pattern with nissan(bringing an updated version of an old car). when BMW makes a performance 3 series it makes two of the same car to run the same lifespan(the 3 and the M3....the 4 and the M4) they dont make a M3 when the 3 is on its way out because when you bring in the new design language the car will be using the outdated design language.
