Loved this video and the end results. I'd really like to try this, I don't sew (I've worked and taken care of family and home). Now retired and alone, I have found hand stitching, junk journaling, and embroidery to be so therapeutic. I love these rag quilts. They're gorgeous, so I won't rest until I give it a try. Thank you for a detailed tutorial.
Wow! Quilting has certainly changed since our grandmothers' day. I guess I'm just 'old school'. I still enjoy pieced quilting by hand on a quilting rack, and I'm making two rag quilts right now and snipping by hand. And, I LOVE it. The detail and creativity of hand quilting is the part that I find relaxing. I see today's quilts completely different. Today, with everything done by machine, it takes the individual creativity and heart away from it.
At first I wondered the same, but I think it's just two different experiences. I'll always treasure sitting next to my Mom Mom as a little girl at her quilting frame
The curvy seam all around is a nice touch rather than a straight plain seam. I like it. I just watched another one of your videos, but you forgot to mention about sewing all around the quilt. Probably an oversight. Very cute rag quilt, thank you.
Love this, it's SO cute ❤. I would really like to see a complete view of your sewing space and if you have a drawing with dimensions as to how you set everything up in that space ( floor plan )? It looks so wonderful 😊

No, don’t catch the edge of the batting cuz you don’t want it showing in the raggedy seam, not pretty. That is the reason for the X in the middle is to catch the binding that way, no need for the sides.
I would like to become good enough to sell as well. I'm curious, is it okay to sell a licensed print fabric like Dumbo? I'd like to do a Grinch and wonder if it can be sold. Super cute quilt and great tutorial!!!
It can, depending on how large your batting square is and how large your seam is. When you sew the X to quilt the square, it holds the batting in perfectly so you don’t need to worry about catching the binding on the sides. 😊
Hi Erica- Yes you can cut the squares by hand. If you look under Rag Quilts Playlist, you will see several videos there where I show how to cut by hand. 😊
Do you pre wash the fabrics? If not do you have any issues with them shrinking differently after it's been washed and dried? I'm wanting to make the quilt but I'm nervous about mixing the fabrics.
I don’t pre-wash my fabrics and I haven’t had any problems with shrinking. If you will be using multiple colors, I highly recommend using a color catcher.
Hi Josie- At this time, I still cut my batting with a rotary cutter and ruler. I have cut batting with my AccuQuilt and it works fine. You will just need to clean the lint from your blades when you’re done. :)
Or you can make 3 blocks and no batting. I’ve done that and the ragging is much fuller and very nice effect. So you sandwich flannel or whatever fabric you want in the middle, same size as top and bottom. No need to put batting in a quilt with 3 layers.
I recommend cutting them in squares. I've only used squares, so I'm not sure about other shapes. I think if you cut rectangle, it will work as well. You will need to keep a consistent size in order for it to work though.
Thank you for clarifying. You would cut the squares whatever the desired size is. You would then sew the blocks together, with the wrong sides facing each other. Use about 1/2" seam allowance. Hi Anisa, I loved watching you on the cut out and assembly of this adorable quilt. I don't have a Accuquilt Big Machine for the squares but I wanted to ask a question when cutting by rotary. What roll does the corners being cut out serve and is it something I should do to my squares before assembling them? I have seen some tutorials without corners cut out and wondered what the necessity of this is?
It really is a personal preference, I do believe. You do not have to cut the corners out if you don’t want to. It just gives it a cleaner look and makes the fringing around the corner a bit easier. When o cut by hand, I usually do all of the cutting at the end. 😊
I have made rag quilts both ways. I prefer it with batting because it makes the quilt warmer but you can definitely leave the batting out. It will not affect the look of the quilt.
Can I ask you what type and number of machine needle you use now? All the store are closed in Quebec so I can ask to the seller of my machine. Since a change my needle, my threader don’t work. Is my needle eye too small??
I love this quilt and your instructions were great. Like another follower, I wondered if you try to catch the batting in the seam when you stitch the square together or is the X stitching enough to hold the batting in place? Also, if you mix minky with cotton or flannel, do you have to wash (and shrink) the cotton & flannel before starting since the minky doesn't shrink? Thanks!!
Joan- I have made several rag quilts with minky, cotton and flannel and I don’t wash my fabric before sewing. I do however, wash it after it’s all sewn together. So that the machine doesn’t bunch up the thread and make a nest of thread. You use the little pce of fabric to start on it and also at the end of your seam, then it’s ready for the next pce, and you keep going to the back and cut that one to use again in front. I never remember what you call these, something like enders. My machine bunches up when it starts sewing as many many machines do and it’s ugly. This works wonders on it.
Sorry, were the squares 6” squares or 7.5” squares. You mention that you thought they were too big so you cut them 6”? Sorry I’m trying to find it again in the transcript but it’s not clear. I know I can make them any size, but I like your size; they just don’t look like 6”. Thank you!

I know I can cut fabric squares using a Cricut maker but I’ve never thought to go ahead and cut the fringe as well. I wonder how well that would go.
I’m not sure how well that would cut with the Maker. I think the fringe might be a bit difficult to remove from the mat.
I cut my fringe after sewing together I don't have to fidget with the little fringe stuff.
Beautiful rag quilt.also your sewing room is sooo ice.Love it and the quilt❤️

Make a mesh bag to wash and dry your rag quilts
Do you catch the outer edge of the batting into the seams? Is just the criss-cross stitching enough to hold down the batting after washing?
No, don’t catch the edge of the batting cuz you don’t want it showing in the raggedy seam, not pretty. That is the reason for the X in the middle is to catch the binding that way, no need for the sides.

I use Pellon 90/20 batting. I really like it. 😊
Would you recommend completing the squares first and sewing all the squares together before doing the rag cut, especially for beginners?
Yes. I would recommend putting your squares together before ragging your quilt. 😊
Nice
Thank you!
That is awesome!
When you sew the side seams together does it attach the batting
It can, depending on how large your batting square is and how large your seam is. When you sew the X to quilt the square, it holds the batting in perfectly so you don’t need to worry about catching the binding on the sides. 😊

Fiskars has spring loaded snips that are perfect for rag quilts.

I am using the AccuQuilt GO Big Electric Cutter and the 8 1/2” GO Rag Die. You can check it out here: shrsl.com/23bmf
Hi Anisa. I was wondering did you cut your batting with accuquilt die
Hi Josie- At this time, I still cut my batting with a rotary cutter and ruler. I have cut batting with my AccuQuilt and it works fine. You will just need to clean the lint from your blades when you’re done. :)
Do you have to sew the X on the squares??????
Yes. That is what holds the layers together.
So im using fleece for the batting between two cotton squares so would the fleece need to be same size as my cotton blocks?
I’d make your fleece square a bit smaller. If your square is 10”, I’d cut my batting 8”.
Or you can make 3 blocks and no batting. I’ve done that and the ragging is much fuller and very nice effect. So you sandwich flannel or whatever fabric you want in the middle, same size as top and bottom. No need to put batting in a quilt with 3 layers.
Do the blocks have to be square? My needed dimensions aren’t coming out right if I cut them square. Will it look weird if they are rectangular?
I recommend cutting them in squares. I've only used squares, so I'm not sure about other shapes. I think if you cut rectangle, it will work as well. You will need to keep a consistent size in order for it to work though.
They look fine in rectangles, squares. I’ve seen every shape, it’s all fine.
