Thank you for this video! I’ve been wanting to try shapes. I’ll be on the hunt for the patterns you need mentioned . I’m currently making rag throw pillows for my couch. I also wanted to share my technique for adding a border. I cut strips 1 1/2 - 2” wide and sew them on to the edge of the blanket. You don’t wrap the fabric over the edge, but instead just butt it up to the edge. I usually do 2-3 layers. I pin them on, then do the seam around the edge. That way you are only making one seam, then rag like usual. It makes a dramatic difference in the look. You don’t have to attach the strips together in length, you can just use your scraps. I hope that makes sense. So it’s essentially like how you did it, but you don’t fold the fabric over the blanket, you add it on top.
I love the idea of adding a "binding" on the edge to make the edge ragging fuller. I'm recycling a flannel sheet set to make a twin size quilt for my great niece Kylie. The original sheet set was queen size. The fitted sheet is the "batting" because it is worn. The selvedges on the flat sheet will be perfect for the binding. It will add strength to the edge and use up all the sheet set!

Nice video :) I once made a rag quilt from jeans for the back and flowery fabrics for the front. For some added interest I made some squares out of 4 smaller quaters, which worked out pretty good. The difference between the sturdy denim and the soft flowers worked really nice 😊
My 3 yr old grandson loves giraffs and zebras and dinosaurs. I need to practice doing some of these. My dil asked me to make her one for her baby shower , lambs and bunnies. I think im going to find daisy fabric and applique a bunny in the middle or bunnies throughout it. Ive never made anything bigger than a table runner so im going to make this as my first quilt ever!
@@TamarasJoyDIY When I buy the satin blanket binding in packages, I open each one. They are not all made with one side longer than the other. I buy all the even ones 😇. I also, put the binding on before ragging (word?) the quilt, and use a walking presser foot. It gets pretty thick at the seams. I didn’t on the first blanket, and it looked a bit rough.
I have been sewing for 60 years. Quilting for 20 years of that. Making my first rag quilt now. I did learn that if you are using up batting leftovers, do not cut batting the same size. Batting should be smaller 1-1/2 inches on each side so that you cannot see batting after washing. I have now prepared over 70 squares now. My squares are 10 inches and I anticipate another 1-2 weeks for this. This is not as easy as it was reported. If I had to advise a newby, I’d say to proceed slowly. Those scissors can ruin it. Careful and methodical is the way forward. I will post my finished quilt. 120 squares and mostly denim, which rags so nicely. Just take a deep breath if you get overwhelmed and walk away for a while. For the edge on the quilts, if you place the fold on the back leaving it at it 1/2 inch and 1 1/4 in on the front on the front-equally 3 1/4 cut of fabric. This should give you two layers and the back should look good when you sew the 1/2 seam.

I have used Joann’s flannel to make the rag quilt squares. When does the linting stop when washing? I am a little embarrassed to give as gifts because even when i wash them twice before gifting they are still linting like crazy. Love your videos!
Hi Joyce, I know what you mean. In the beginning I used to feel the same way. but then I realized that the blankets are always appreciated and as long as I give them washing instructions with the gift it is all good. So first I take some packing tape or a cheap shaver to take off the excess lint that is on the blanket after I wash it. This way it looks nice and new again. Then I let the person I have gifted the blanket to know that they should wash it with some old towels for the first few washes, after that it will stop ragging up so much. They always seem grateful for the gift and the tips. Hope this helps!

Hi! One more question. Do you recommend prewashing flannel which will be used as a center for a cotton rag quilt. You told me in a previous posting that you usually don’t prewash cotton fabrics. I have decided to follow your practice. I thought I heard you say in one of your tutorials NOT to prewash flannel but a friend of mine suggested I should. Your opinion?
Hi 😃If you are prewashing one fabric then definitely prewash them all. If my blanket is only flannel and I want it to rag out anyways I don’t worry about washing. Often fabric is prewashed these days before being sold as fabric is also precut into smaller packed sizes for quilting and other crafts. If you are planning on putting red and white pieces together then for sure prewash to take any risk of bleeding away. Hi Michelle and welcome to the world of sewing! Rag quilts are a great place for beginner sewers to start. However I have never added photos onto fabric with fabric photo paper. But if I were to do this I can only assume it would work better on cotton fabric then flannel fabric so I would suggest doing a rag quilt using this method: th-cam.com/video/_Sya4HdwF-s/w-d-xo.html that way you can use the photo's on cotton fabric but still get a nice ragged look. I so badly need help. My grand daughters fav. holiday is Halloween. She is dealing with her 3 year old daughter having Leukemia. She h has asked me to make her a large RAG quilt with vintage fabric. She wants the solid in between. SOOOOOOO I have 16 different fabrics, 8 for the front and 8 for the back. I have the solids also. I have 16 squares of each cut. I a.m doing cotton with flannel in the middle. I don't know how to lay it out. That is going to be 16 sqaures in a row and 16 columns. I wanted to do it where the squares formed a pattern like steps going down. like the first one being the second one in second row and third in third row. I really could use any advice suggestions even pics. I want this to be special because Violet is getting ready to go through a hard dose of chemo. through the end of the year. Please quilters help me. I also am thinking of making the solids 4 inch finished size as my squares are 8 in and will be 7 finished. Thanks for any help. I have made rag quilts before but not with this many fabrics. I am an intermediate quilter
I am so sorry to hear about your families heartbreak. A three year old should never have to go through anything like that. I will pray for her and the doctors who are caring for her. As for the blanket I would suggest laying everything out on a queen bed or open floor space to see what the pattern would look like. If you want the step down look take your stacks and start with the first row. Place one of each of the fabrics down in a row and then start over doing that again until you have laid out 16 sq. Then for the next row start your pattern one off from the previous row. Doing this will naturally make your blanket have the step down lines you are looking for. One you have laid out your pattern pin your rows together and then number your rows so they don’t get mixed up during the sewing process. Taking a picture of your laid out pattern will help too! I hope this helps! Happy sewing 🧵💕
i'm not a very experienced sewer..but how bout when attaching the binding just sew it to the one bottom layer, pull forward the upper layers. 2 of the upper layers up out of the sewing line will decrease the bulk in the binding plus, with 2 layers of binding added with 2 you kept out will be a nice thick raggy layer...does my reasoning make ant sense?
Hi Mary, I think I understand what you are saying...but the layers are already sewn together. Or are you talking about the binding layers. Either way, if you have a better way that's awesome! I will have to sit down and give your suggestion a try. Less bulk is always a plus!
If I'm understanding correctly, this way would mean that the binding is only attached to the bottom layer. this would created too much weight & stress on that one layer. I've seen where the sewer added a (multi layer ???) strip along all of the outside edges, sewed two seams, one at the edge & one about an inch or two in & ragged those to get the full edging. This is how I would do it.
I have seen these done in fleece. But because fleece doesn’t fray it just won’t rag out. But you can still clip it so it has a nice “ragged” look. The biggest concern I would have with fleece is that it will make the layers you see through quite thick. So maybe do one layer of fleece with a layer of flannel?
I am searching for a copy of the Simplicity 1822 Rag Quilts Sewing Pattern with snail, turtle, and butterfly that doesn’t cost $40. If anyone has a copy they would be willing to sell for a reasonable amount, I sure would appreciate it!
Hi Kathi, the best way to have more ragging is by adding another layer of flannel to the project. But I do find that over time the ragging does disappear from some of the edges depending on the animal. Hope that helps! And happy sewing!
Hi Anne, Sorry I don't have a tutorial for that one. But if you watch all animal rag quilt videos you may still find your answer there. I have made the teddy bear before. Can you tell me what your struggle is exactly?
To avoid that I would suggest using a cotton layer on top. But prewash the flannel and cotton fabrics ahead of time as they will shrink at different rates.
I like your videos, but would like them better if you would avoid all of you personal comments until the end. Sometimes I watch a video for almost ten minutes before you get started.
Thanks for your suggestions! Hopefully my newer videos aren’t as bad. Each video I try to get better 😉 and since my goal is to have most of my videos no longer then 10 min you shouldn’t have to wait so long to get to the good stuff🤔

@@TamarasJoyDIY thankyou Tamara i just saw and watched your reply videos to me i hope using my cotton sarongs will work well i also have javanese wax batik fabric sarongs..i'm hoping those sarongs will work out to i own 166 sarongs in my collection the woven balinese ikat sarongs i have in the past don't cut all the way very well i was always told because that the cotton ikat sarongs from bali get a straight grain if ripped rather than cut all the way ..but thankyou for the videos found them helpful love Scott🙂💜💜
No problem! Glad I could help you out Scott. That is a lot of sarongs! Happy sewing 🧵
@@TamarasJoyDIY 🙂💜💜 cause there are so many sarongs in my collection i may need a few people to help rip them so they can be sewed into rag rugs...will make things quicker to get done
Hi I'm so confused on how much yarn I need for a strip rag quilt , I'm making a twin/ double , what ever it ends up, cotton print I bought 2 yards each, want to make back and middle of flannel. If it is 70×90 how do you figure your materials so it is still that size after ragging
Hello so when doing the binding do you add that to both sides or just on the edge of the quilt
Hi Toni, The binding will fold over the edge. Check out this tutorial to see the full concept: th-cam.com/video/mStz7vz2qRA/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more clarification😊
Can rag quilt squares be set on point for meow of a diamond effect?
For sure!!! It is on my list to do something like that and just cut a bunch of squares in half for the edge pieces. Thanks for the question Corinne :)
@@TamarasJoyDIY I feel like I’m standing on my head to come up with a design. I don’t do random well, I guess. Can I match the front with the back fabric so it looks good on both sides? Or will the fringing not look right with the same fabric on both sides?
Absolutely! Matching the front and back is something I have done too. Makes things much easier when it comes to keeping the design on both sides.
Did you ever get the peacock pattern? If not I have one I can send to you.
I never did...for REAL!?!?!?!?! Can you please email me? tamarasjoydiy@gmail.com
@@TamarasJoyDIY I sent email.
I think that you are Canadian, but from what province? In south shore of Montreal, I have 2 stores that I can ask if they can order the ones you want. The more small store is a family store and the 2 sisters are so nice. I will ask them if she can order them!
Hi Claudette, Yes! I am Canadian, grew up in BC and now I reside in AB. I stayed with a friend in Montreal once, LOVED it! I have a cherished piece of art from there that shows old Montreal against the backdrop of New Montreal. It is beautiful. Sadly I do not speak french, my mom was a french teacher and it still didn't stick! I suppose I am just better at sewing🤪 You are so kind to offer to help me find a pattern💝I won't put you through all that. I have so many other blankets and patterns that will keep me busy for a long while so I will survive without it. But if I ever make it back to the states I will definitely go on the hunt!! I am also pretty sure simplicity patterns are no longer sold in canada unless hunted down online. But I could be wrong🤷♀️
I want to make a grungy style rag quilt with the batting sticking out is that ok?
Sure! That’s what creating is all about. Making it our own. Have fun sewing your rag quilt Mary! 🥳

What about fleece?? Has anyone used that thick fleece
If anyone has a copy they would be willing to sell for a reasonable amount, I sure would appreciate it!
i have one if u r still looking
If anyone is looking for the simplicity pattern for the bear, dog, cat.its online for 4.99
I have made several animals cat, dog, bear and duck. The problem I am having is the ragging comes off the rounded edges. Any help would be great.
Hi Kathi, the best way to have more ragging is by adding another layer of flannel to the project. But I do find that over time the ragging does disappear from some of the edges depending on the animal. Hope that helps! And happy sewing!
Do you have a teddy bear rag quilt tutorial I need desperate help! Simplicity s9674
Hi Anne, Sorry I don't have a tutorial for that one. But if you watch all animal rag quilt videos you may still find your answer there. I have made the teddy bear before. Can you tell me what your struggle is exactly?
Mercari has the pattern 38$
I made a rag quilt .when I washed it, it looked old and worn out . Never again .
To avoid that I would suggest using a cotton layer on top. But prewash the flannel and cotton fabrics ahead of time as they will shrink at different rates.
I don’t consider them blankets
I like your videos, but would like them better if you would avoid all of you personal comments until the end. Sometimes I watch a video for almost ten minutes before you get started.
Thanks for your suggestions! Hopefully my newer videos aren’t as bad. Each video I try to get better 😉 and since my goal is to have most of my videos no longer then 10 min you shouldn’t have to wait so long to get to the good stuff🤔
