    I read somewhere that the bride carried a bouquet of flowers, because people could only bathe a few times a month, so the flowers hid her funky smell.

      Funny sidetrack: the reason all the names of the days of the week have Scandinavian origins except Saturday, is that the Scandinavian name for Saturday is "washing day" and the ancient British were like "who washes as often as once a week?!" ^^

    From as long as I can remember I knew the whole having rings and giving away the bride had something to do with women being property so I refused to be walked down the aisle by my dad to my husband. Even the whole white dress thing, I know in the video it says it was a sign of wealth but people in this day and age still associate it with the bride's virginity. I probably will not have a typical 'wedding'. I don't want to be 'married' on legal terms. What I will have is a "celebration of love, growth and partnership forever" party. I just want a life partner that I can come home to, build a family with and grow old with. That's it.

If I recall, magic school bus wasn't entirely accurate and they didn't source. Also people are encouraged to make their own opinions on the topic,more fool them than me. On top of that, if you are being schooled by a comedian)TV host, I wouldn't be admitting my lacking in intelligence and common sense.

      actually for most of the middle ages in Europe it was green, blue was regional and different colors in different places. Red was more asia, in fact in Christian Europe red was called the "Harlots color" and no self respecting woman would have worn it

  • @krystle4983

    The red dress part isn't true. For the longest time women would wear the nicest dress they already owned. Then one day what's her face got married in a white a dress and it became a trend.

    • @krystle4983
      @krystle4983 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Also, the church wasn't always a thing. People often got married in places like barns and streets.

    • @blucat5223
      @blucat5223 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Krystle actually no, it wasn't necessarily her nicest dress, there was no dress code before queen Victoria because weddings were very simple get togethers that happened at home.

    • @michaelbcohen
      @michaelbcohen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Actually white was cultural and in some parts of Europe and the Med region people wore white back long before Queen Vic, it was a cultural thing. But yeah, red was Asia, Christian Europe viewed red on women as the "harlots color" and women would not have worn red. And in most of Europe the Church was the place for weddings, in other places people used other venues. Things depended on time and place in history

    • @Katniss777

      @inamib.9786 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      If you look at the Wikipedia page for white weddings, it does claim that red was a popular choice among wealthier women. I can't verify the the source since it's a book, but that's probably where she got it. I think you're both right, ordinary women would wear their nicest dress but those who could afford it would wear something special

    Another reason for the bouquet and having weddings in June: in the 1800s, people took baths only once a year, particularly in May. By June people started to smell hence having the bouquet to ward off the smell

  • @WaiferThyme

    Actually the tradition of carrying a bouquet or nosegay at the wedding stems from the middle ages when people only took baths once or twice a year. Usually in the spring and again in the fall before and after the cold months. Since most weddings took place in late spring or in summer, the bride would be starting to smell pretty ripe so they started carrying bouquets
    of flowers and herbs to disguise her stink! (true fact!)

  • @davidwiessing416
    @davidwiessing416 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Any tradition can be said to be antiquated. The value of tradition is not bound to it's origin. Most of the practices in this video still exist because they have evolved from their original purposes. Groomsmen, brides maids, best man maid of honor, rings, the kiss, the honeymoon... these all have modern symbolism or even practical use to this day. Of course it's your wedding and you should do what you want with it, but simply because the origins of these traditions may seem strange today, that doesn't mean they are without meaning or beauty now.

  • @malvavisco10
    @malvavisco10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It may be a different area of the world that what she discussed, but brides used bouquets so they couldn't smell the wedding guests because people back then bathed rarely and everyone smelled horrible.

    I'm glad we did away with about half of these when my daughter got married. The wedding was in Las Vegas. An Epic Choice to begin with. We threw out the "Rule Book." I asked her for only two things:
    A "Rehearsal Cocktail Party" and invited all guests who were in town the night before the ceremony. It was a blast, everybody made new friends and hung out at the hotel pool, went gambling, went to the spa together. Big success! Plus we didn't need a rehearsal per say, because we eliminated all attendants!
    Number 2: A traditional Receiving Line" that guests passed through so every guest could be personally greeted and thanked for coming. Their reward was an open bar and mountain of delicious H.D.s .
    Make choices that feel like Freedom - and always remember - GUESTS should be treated like visiting royalty, not bit players in your personal drama fantasy. Cheers!

    If I ever have a wedding I dont want it to be traditional at all, I would want it to be Tim Burton themed, black, orange and white. On Halloween, at 10pm the wedding would end at 12. (I know I seem very spisific but its just a very different concept I like)

      Obolobi Beep is different, but you are not the only one. my favorite holiday is Halloween. I got married on the 28th, hubby's birthday is the 25th. So it all works out. Can plan fun trips to Salem, ceder point, ( if you live in the USA). Oh it's always fun to visit cemeteries.

    A bouquet was also used to make brides smell better because typically in olden times you couldn't bathe a lot

  • @patriciacorreia9150
    @patriciacorreia9150 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    the flowers were also used to disguise the smell - people in the middle ages sure didn't bathe much, so they had to come up with something to mask the smell of a bride whose last bath was 3 months before.

    The best man tradition actually originated in Scotland, when a man couldn't find a wife he had the option to go steal one from the neighbouring village, the best man was the best and most trusted fighter the groom knew, and on the day of the wedding, the Best man would be the only one with a short sword, his role was to fight the brides family in the event that the brides family came for her

    Actually, the origin of the WORD honeymoon (rather than the concept) was from middle age taverns gifting newly weds a tankard of mead that would typically last a month. A "honey" "moon cycle".
