Because they don't have the best reputation in many parts of the world. There are some great hostels, but there has also been a lot of issues with crime, drugs, uncleanliness, etc.
Hostels specifically in the United States are not good. They usually have a better reputation in places like London, Germany, France...European Countries.
I've been to lots of hostels all around Europe and never had a problem with any of them. They're cheap, usually very close to the centre and I always stay just for a couple of days so I don't care if they're not the most beautiful places to stay. I think as long as your standards are not too high and you want something cheap, hostels are the best option.
I went to Germany for a school trip once and we stayed in a youth hostel... one of the German kids from another school threw a knife through one of our windows lmao (I have nothing against Germany btw)

I have never been to a hostel, but why does she act like they are negative? I googled it and it looked like hostels are cool and cost effective
Because they don't have the best reputation in many parts of the world. There are some great hostels, but there has also been a lot of issues with crime, drugs, uncleanliness, etc.
Hostels specifically in the United States are not good. They usually have a better reputation in places like London, Germany, France...European Countries.
I've been to lots of hostels all around Europe and never had a problem with any of them. They're cheap, usually very close to the centre and I always stay just for a couple of days so I don't care if they're not the most beautiful places to stay. I think as long as your standards are not too high and you want something cheap, hostels are the best option.
