  • How To Fit An SPD SL Cleat To A Cycling Shoe
    Bikes are very intricate pieces of engineering. Each individual component fits together and the whole bike just seems to work perfectly. Of course, the complications start when you add a rider, particularly if that rider isn’t a regular shape, size or weight.
    It can be a bit of a butterfly effect. Change one small thing to fit the rider and it will have a ripple effect that, potentially, could lead to some major changes elsewhere on the bike.
    One such thing are the cleats on cycling shoes. The perceived correct position is very much dependant on several other things being correct: so for example, saddle height, saddle fore and aft position, crank length, and Mars being in the correct alignment with the sun.

    Thanks so much for this video, been struggling with knee pain since I started using clipless pedals a few weeks ago, I tried adjusting them following other videos but it didn't help.
    After doing it exactly as you show in your video, not only the pain is gone, but I also feel my feet in a much more comfortable position while biking.

    Most straightforward video yet, just wasn’t exactly sure which point on the cleat had to line up with the mark on the side of the shoe?

    a few month's back I ordered a nice pair of shimano carbon shoes and the spd sl cleats...I used them for around 3 weeks after carefully setting them up but and a BIG but I couldn't get used to them after my normal spd cleats...I didn't feel safe in them which I think came from the extra stiffness of the shoe...I immediately went and ordered 'normal' shimano' shoes with my favoured spd cleats...the carbon ones are currently for sale in my favourite specialized dealer in heraklio!!!!

      I also used to ride with SPDs and liked them well enough until I swapped over to the SPD SLs. They feel like I am much more connected to the pedal and able to pull up with more power. Each to their own, I suppose.

    Thank you Leonard, very instructive, while the first time I went to a bike fit for the cleats, I discover that with the progress of my riding, that position is no longer good, and I wanted to try to do it myself, while I managed to remove any discomfort in the saddle and my legs and knees, the only issue I’m having is with my left foot, the ball and most important my toes get numb after a few miles riding, it goes away if I stop and place my feet in the ground for a couple of minutes, any advice on how to make this disappear? It is the only thing that is stopping me to ride miles and miles without stopping I’m afraid! Thank you in advance!

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds to me like you might not have the cleats in quite the right position and/ or you shoes might not fit properly.

    • @ixmemphis
      @ixmemphis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jollygoodvelo I think I’m aiming for both, my left foot is wider and usually for regular shoes is the one when I get tired after a long walk/hike since I was a child, I will try to find some wider shoes, maybe try something for Santic (not the Alpha 2.0 though) and see what happens! Thanks a lot Leonard!!! 👍🏻

    I use MTB cleats on my road bike, much easier to walk around with. I'm curious as to what do you think about wheels. My road bike is £750 and the rear hubs on my 2 budget wheel sets are constantly breaking down, given the price of the bike what do you think is a reasonable spend to replace them? Currently have Shimano RS010 and RS11.

      Hi Nigel, I also used to ride SPDs back in the day. Double sided pedals made it much easier to clip in. I certainly noticed a big difference when I swapped over to SPD SLs. The larger surface made it feel like I had a lot more power on the up-stroke.
      As for wheels, if they were the original ones that came with a £750 they won’t be the best quality. Not surprised they keep breaking down, especially considering the mileage you do. I would suggest getting a set of hand made wheels with some decent hubs. They might cost you around £300/£400 but they would be worth it.

    • @purpleaki7135
      @purpleaki7135 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Leonard, maybe one day i will try road bike pedals but for now the ease of walking around outweigh any marginal gains. Thanks for the advice of the wheels i will start my search in the morning. I do about 14-16000kms a year so maybe its time to invest. That's a subject (wheels) I don't think you've touched on? Have you?

    I have Shimano shoes with Shimano yellow cleats. The problem is, when I push the cleats all the way forward its still doesn't line up with the ball of the big toe. Wtf.?

    Just a dumb question. If you are not cycling at super speed, is there any benefit of using clipless pedal versus normal flat pedal? My average speed is around 28km/hr to 30km/hr

    • @jollygoodvelo
      @jollygoodvelo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not a dumb question at all. Firstly I would say that your average speed is slightly above what most recreational cyclists would ride at so you are already getting towards ‘super speed’. If you are not already using clipless pedals it might not necessarily help you ride faster but may help smooth out your pedal strokes. I also find that being able to pull up on the pedal really helps when climbing.

      You should feel a big difference in your pedalling, especially on the up stroke. You may have to experiment with the position a little but it will help you, I promise.
