Good advice!...still screwing around with my cleat placement even after almost 20 years of road riding. Glad to get some logic around what changes when the cleats are moved forward/backward/laterally
Great advice! I have the same tool and it works great. I would recommend to also mark the position of the 1 mtp joint line and measure the ditsance the cleats are behind it, this makes it easy to find the correct position when changing shoes also. Steve Hogg has a great article detailing how to this.
1 - My toes have to be a bit outwards, if else there will be a strain on the knee tendons, which can easily lead to knee pains that linger for weeks/months. (So: be very careful adjusting the angle) 2 - find your natural foot position by sitting on a table with the inside of your knees fully against the edge, then dangle your feet: you will find if your feet want to stay more straight or at an angle. 3 - changing the fore/aft position is more forgiving but with pressure/pain on the front of your knee, move the cleats backwards so your bottom leg is more straight downwards when pushing down
Fantastic Information and Well Explained, I never knew there was the TP1 Tool also. You are right you have some smart friends but so too are you. Thank you for sharing this information.
New sub here from Portugal. 1st off congratulations on being such successful athlete and thanks a lot for making these videos for us `common weekend cyclists`. I would like to hear you opinion about Steve Hogg, since the site is my "first go to place" when it comes to any bike fit issue.
Hi Victor, I'm not sure if anyone touched on your point about power in squats. Squat position is very dependent on how the femur inserts into the hip socket. This insertion dominates foot position, but most often it is indeed with toes slightly out! Great video regardless!!
Great videos Victor. Can we have one on how you setup your road bike fit? Love the way you and Adam have super aero positions on the bike. You are both similar to a TT position. It’s amazing how many watts people are saving with smart positions 👍
what is the effect of the cleat position on the muscle groups used in the legs? In my experience this is a big factor in cleat positioning - e.g. more forward will cause the heels to come up more because of the natural movement, and so more stress on the calves especially when the pedal is moving upwards. But so far the best video on setting up cleats I've ever seen!
It's very difficult to predict what your ankle will do when changing elements of the bike fit. That's one of the reasons they do dynamic measurements. I think in general a more forward cleat will "feel" like your saddle is slightly lower and your cranks are somewhat shorter but your calf muscles will need to do more stabilizing work when you're putting down power.
I wear SiDi size 48 and ride in same cleat position. I feel my foots more stable on platforms. If you have big foots try it. If is need put your saddle forward.
7:04 "my right foot, the heel is just slightly a bit more out" - do you place the cleats the same? (this way the right heel goes a bit out because being possible by the float of the cleat) - or do you place the right cleat slightly a bit more out? thank you! great video! ;-)
It’s a good idea to have some float either side of your natural foot angle, so I’d adjust the right one to suit the position as opposed to allowing this movement with float alone
Merci Victor! :)
@@Numeriwar so much so that half the pro cyclists buy them for themselves instead of using team sponsor cleats when they can. e.g. dowsett, wiggins and many many more
@@jamesd5241 speedplay works if stance width is perfect and your applying force verticaly. Otherwise the plastic body will wear out and then there is not much keeping your feet from rolling beside the narrow butterfly plate.
Another good video Victor. But why force your feet to be straight? I pedal slightly heels in/toe out as that’s how my feet naturally hang and what feels most natural. Arch support does make me less toe-out though. Cheers
I would not suget to force your feet, I just would sugest. If your feel look realy funny. You should do some specific work on it. It will not change over time. But my feet are now already a lot straighter as at the start of my carreer. This only happend my specific exercices. Watch this vid!: instagram.com/p/wyWFWxyXJY/?igshid=128idwqpjfhht
If the cleats would be more in the middle of the shoe, wouldn't that make you sit lower and thus be more aero? As how Egan Bernal is trying at the moment, which this video is analysingth-cam.com/video/cicLFf9981o/w-d-xo.html
I don’t think a totally straight/inline shoe is gives correct ergonomics. We’re designed to walk and run, not pedal a bike. If you look at a running motion the foot goes through a fairly large angle change and there is a predominant ankle in/pronation bias. There may not be a power difference but for knee health, ankle in should be more natural.
who would take cleat placement advice from a FORMER hour record holder when you could get it from the CURRENT one?
I LOLED way too hard

Good point about not trusting the markings on the shoes. I've always felt things were off a bit when you try to line the cleats up with them.
Victor, can you please do video on pedaling technique
Thank you man in advance
That would be great!

Perfect explanation and especially relevant as a shimano yellow cleats user myself.
No one has ever done this - thank you ! tho after 20yrs riding I know my positions but still great to hear 🙏

Do you think a shoe with a wide toebox is better than a smal one? This way the foot can spread better, resulting in a more stable position.
Nice video. What is he pedal dead spot device?
Thanks for sharing, this was very helpful.
Good advice. When I don't position my feet a little bit out, I get pain in my knees
I have the same bought from HK, cost about 5 Euros!
Which insoles do you use?
Useful stuff Victor, thank-you.
no markers amongst your tools?

Hi Victor,
At the beggining of the video you mentioned that you used to use another brand of cleats? Where they Look or Time cleats?
Just wondering

Bij naar achter plaatsen van de cleats, moet het zadel dan niet wat lager en naar voren?
what did you think about speedplay ?

Adam Hansen uses kevlar for keeping his cleats in place. Weight gains? And why the challenge with Alex Dowsett :-) ?

Replace every month? sounds like Look cleats :)

Had to give this a like based on your funny comment about Alex at the end Lol

I would suggest look keo
