- A effective method to Clip in and out regardless of your level as a cyclist. Keep in mind that these are techniques that have worked for me and you may obtain different results entirely.
As with any cycling activity, follow all recommended safety rules and only do so in an environment that you feel comfortable and safe.
Have your pedal release set to the easiest setting while learning.
Decide what leg you will use to clip in and out and do so consistently.
You aren't clipping out both legs, just one leg.
There are a number of pedal and cleat systems, Do your research to find the one that works for you.
I followed these steps perfectly yesterday and conquered my fears. Last year I broke my arm on my first attempt, but yesterday, I successfully clipped in and out for the whole 22 miles with no falls or scares. Thank you! .
I am glad you are back on it and that you persevered passed your injury to have success. Thanks for the sharing that.
I never comment on videos; however, I feel obligated.
You single-handedly made my 1st clip-less experience that much less frightening and less injury prone with this great technique of counter-balancing off one un-clipped leg.
I practiced 15 minutes at home then outside simulating stop signs/red lights then went out on a trail with no big issues.
I watched this for a second time. I have not started using my clips yet. I subscribed to your channel. I have much to learn. Thank you so much.
Thank you!! First timer here, had zero issues after watching your video 🎉
The most perfect and detailed explanation ever for how to clip in and out the cleats , thank u so much, the best video
Thank you Jewell! Glad it helped👍🏾
Wish I had seen this two weeks ago - clipping in and clipping out were never hard for me, but I kept falling at stops because I stayed seated and couldn't maintain balance. After seeing your video and then kinda watching other riders, it should have been more apparent in hindsight. Now I'm more balanced and used to it, so it's not as important for me to get out of my seat, but that would have seriously saved me scraping my new shoes and dropping my bike at a lot of intersections as well as given me much more confidence early on.
I had watched a LOT of these videos too and this is the first one that clearly shows the body mechanics that help.
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped

This is a great video and I love the advice for falling! Just got new pedals and am back riding in my neighbor hood bc I’m scared. Thank you!!
Much appreciated! Your video gave me the tools needed to clip in and out! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Good video and info. After years of using basic SPD cleats and pedals I got myself some SPT-SL numbers. Put me back on the learning curve a bit. And, I'd say, clipping while rolling is my biggest problem right now.
Luis, in the video, when you fluffed your clip-in, at least you got it on the second attempt. When I fluff it, (which is way too often, and why I was watching), it usually takes me multiple attempts. Thanks.
This is the video, of yours, that I had been searching for since I just got my first set of clipless shoes. Thank you Luis for this video. It's straight to the point and also seriously informative and helpful. #Excellent The only addition to this video would be the best position and technique for clipping in initially.
Man! Thank you for that and I am glad you found it.
I’m brand new to clippless pedals that last part he mentioned when you miss the clip in (every beginner will do it I’ve done it like 10 time already) is so important I think when we miss the clip we get scared and panic don’t do exactly what he did give yourself another pedal with the shoe already clipped in to give yourself more momentum. That’s so important!!
👍🏾
Great job covering something so basic. Essential material to be safe and efficient in clipless setup. TY
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Very helpful advice, especially keeping hold of the handle bars for as long as possible when you know you're going to fall. On my first ride with clips, I didn't do that and my elbow and hips paid the price.
Ouch. Stay safe Keith
Thankyou for a clear and helpful demonstration. Getting back on bike after bad fall a while back
Awesome! I will try this on my ride tomorrow. Havent used this technique. Thanks!
Nice. Hope it helps
Thanks for this!
That's a very good explanation.
Thank you
Excellent video. Especially for a newbie like myself. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
This video helped me the most after watching several great job explaining
Thank you Yolanda! I am glad you found it helpful
This is exactly what I was looking for. Great tips and straight to the point. Thanks, brother.
Thank you for watching 👍🏾
I never leave comments but this was a very good job.
Very eloquent. Thank you!
This video really helped. I just fell while riding today. Luckily, I did hurt much other than a scraped knee. I came back and watched this video. I went out and practiced this technique and much easier. Thanks!
Awesome to hear that! Thanks gor sharing 👍🏾
Thanks for the advice. Was presented in a very good way! :)
This was great. Much better than most videos on the subject. I can't seem to clip out with the left leg in the high 12 o'clock position, but I guess as long I stick with the right leg it should be fine.
👍🏾
Best explanation I have found. Perfect job !!!
Thank you 👍🏾
good tips, especially how to fall as I know i will need it one day :D
Really great explanation, thanks for the video
Great tip about the not sticking your hand out
I’m going to follow these steps as I’m a new clip in cyclists and i don’t want to fall while I’m 🚴🏿on the road
Thank you for sharing, this video made it look so easy i will give it a try today.
Best of luck Petro!
This was so good. Thank you.
You're so welcome!
Thank you. Very clearly explained
Thank you Peter👍🏾
Thanks a lot for the video, it's very helpful!! You saved my ass from another fall)😁
Always good to know this video helped👍🏾
Thank you
You're welcome
Great clear video, thank you!
Thanks for watching👍🏾
Great video!! Wish I would have seen this earlier. Where can I find those wall racks to mount the bike? Thanks
Thank you. My wife got them for me from Amazon.
Good stuff. Considering clipping. Still a few weeks away from doing so. Secretly, I was waiting for you to slip Haaa j/k.😎
Good luck to you on the attempt👍🏾
Hey do you remember what brand your stationary trainer is?
Tks
This is awesome, I appreciate the advice, I’m new to riding, the device you’re using to cycle indoors? Which one is that? Which brand would you recommend?
Hi there. The Device on this video is really really old. It's a wheel on system by Elite. Mist devices today are what is known as direct drive and most brands are very good...
Saris
Elite
Wahoo
Just google direct drive bike trainers.
Thanks for watching and good luck!
Yep sprained wrist here as of yesterday.
Sorry to hear that
I never clip out with the leg at the top because I find it harder on that ankle movement. Then I unpedal the other leg to get balanced on both legs and stop safely.
Thanks for sharing!
Any advice on doing this on an incline? I live somewhere hilly.
Thanks for watching. That's a tough one. You would need to be really comfortable balancing the bike at low speeds... with a strong push off., but the mechanics would be the same.
What if you're stopped on an incline?
If SAFE... Go downhill for a bit using all safety measures... using moment, clip in and then... IF SAFE, turn around and proceed, MAKING EVERY EFFORT TO BE SAFE.
Or, if it is close to the top walk up and proceed👍🏾
What stand is that you have your bike on in your garage?
My fault but I was confident in trying my new clipless pedals without practicing and on my 2nd trip, couldn’t unclip in time and fell over, injuring my right shoulder with a deep contusion.
Ouch, sorry to hear that. Hope you heal well👍🏾
@@thegoodwheel it’s a rite of passage I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Brilliant instruction. Thank you for putting this together. Super helpful. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia
keep i mind when your on the road dont be lookin down tryin to clip in thats dangerous (cars) your body should develop muscle memory by than
👍🏾
Wooooo, boy... I watched this video on June 4th, 2023, and on Monday, August 20th it saved my life. Did that slow fall... and held onto the handlebars for dear life. I came away with some minor scraps and I'm good to race on Saturday! Thanks for the tip. An acquaintance fell the same day, and thinks she sprained her arm. I am beyond thankful that I heard this and kept it in the back of my mind.
I am so glad to hear this. Good luck on your race👍🏾
@@thegoodwheel Thank you!
