    Great vid. I'm a counsellor and find myself discussing this model a lot. Good to see a thorough but accessible, easy to follow walk though of the basic theory.

    Guilt vs Shame...... book/TV series Atlas Of The Heart differenciates between the two and defines them.... Shame hurts and often causes a withdrawl from others, while Guilt leads to being sorry, trying to fix situation, apologizing, changing behavior, etc.

    Another graph in a TH-cam video shows and iceberg with the ego fully above water and the super-ego partially submerged in the unconscious sea whereas the ID is wholly submerged in the sea of unconsciousness.

    Perfect explanation.Thanks a bunch.but I'm confused about something.You have said that the ID does not change with time or experience as it is not in touch with the external world,but then in defining the Ego,You've said that it is the part of the ID which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world.How it comes !? Isn't this a contradiction !?

    • @shortsinpsychology1680
      @shortsinpsychology1680  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Adila, thanks for your question. I can understand your confusion. When I state that the Id is unchanging, I am referring to the Id component of personality once all 3 components have developed. Not all three components of personality are present from birth, only the Id. The Ego is second to emerge, with the Supergo developing last, at around 5-6 years of age. Therefore, yes, the Ego does develop from the Id as at that stage, the Id has been the only active component of personality. When I say that the Id is unchanging, I am referring to the part that remains constant - it is still “Id” and hasn’t developed into part of the Ego. This explains why we retain the Id part of our personality into adulthood. Does this make more sense?
