The first thing to understand when searching for cheap flights is to BE FLEXIBLE the more flexible you are the better deal you will find! That means being flexible with your dates, destination, and departing airport!
Fly out of Hub airports, Especially for international flights major airports have significantly more daily flights therefore much cheaper deals! Sometimes it even makes sense to fly from where you live to a hub airport in order to save money!
Plan a stopover, this is a perfect way to see a new city without breaking the bank some airlines even allow you to do this completely free!
Sign up for Scott's Cheap Flights! This service emails you every time they see a cheap flight sometimes the airlines even make mistakes where they price the tickets TOO CHEAP! I have personally flown round trip to Paris for $220 from Vegas thanks to Scott's!
Fly carry on only! Some airlines charge extra for checking a bag, especially for basic economy tickets! If you can manage to fly carry on only you can save a lot of money on excess baggage fees!
Search for flights in private browsing, some airlines track you cookies/search history and raise prices on routes that you have been watching! If you search in private browsing this can easily be prevented!
Cross check travel comparison websites! Once you find a good deal make sure to cross check it with other travel comparison websites to makes sure you are getting the best deal! My favorites are Google Flights, Skyscanner, and Momondo!
When to book? There is a common misconception that you want to book a flight as early as possible! That is simply not true, I have found the best time to book international flights is 3-12 weeks from departure and 2-10 weeks for domestic flights!
Book now and ask your boss later, most airlines offer a government mandated 24 hours cancellation policy that means if you see a deal you can book it now and ask your boss for the time off the next day! Worst case they say no and the airlines gives you a full refund!
