Hey Scotty, I was looking into this Honda Civic that looked super clean, so I asked if I can see the car and check it out. I also asked to see what work been done on the car and if it needs work. It’s $800 bucks, but I wanted to ask if it’s even worth it to get. Also the guy never replied back

I have no clue what he's doing but I always watch his videos lol he's just naturally entertaining
Basically he had to remove the motor mounts so the engine could be low enough so he reach up inside. Honda is notoriously bad with that. The older Honda's are a bit better space wise and a bit easier to work with. As much as he'd say not to I had a 1994 accord with 275k on the engine that ran beautifully

@@kibawhitefang7176 most fwd and transverse engine mounted awd car have the belt on the side too. Audi's can be a pain too before they switched to timing chains but even those have chain issues too.

You know it’s amazing, I’m a nurse and I assisted in many surgeries and when I watch a mechanic work the way this man does it blows me away it’s like watching a surgeon do an operation, you have to know where every part is and goes after you move all those parts around. Scotty you’re one amazing dude! Mechanics don’t get the appreciation they deserve.

That's modern cars for you. They want you at the garage to pay their mechanics fees. My wife's uncle used to have an Alfa Romeo, needed an alternator, engine out job. Ouch

True, would be a very difficult diy, new pulley and alternator, car must run great now, good for another 60k miles.

I give you credit Scotty. I’m in my mid 40’s and working on my cars takes a huge toll on my body. Sometimes a simple control arm change takes me 2 hours to complete because frequent breaks are needed to alleviate pain in my back and arms. You on the other hand make it look like child’s play even at your age. Thanks for another diy video. Those types of videos is why I watch your channel.

You mean the torque? I've noticed too. But yes, you can safely tighten bolts with an impact if you have the experience. I can't, but I know it can be done no problem.

There's some pretty reliable Hondas out there, too. I'm not judging. In fact, imo, the two brands complement each other. They're both Japanese by heritage.
Changed my 09 civic r18 for a 09 Acura Tsx. I've always appreciated Scotty's advice, he reminds me of my grand pa that used to teach me how to drive nails when I was 2
I had this problem on my 2012 Civic at 165,000 km.
I can confirm that my after market replacement part has already started making a sound after only 25,000 km.
Honda parts are the way to go, I guess.
Think you can do this more easy. First remove the plastic fender liner in the wheel arch. Then you can directly unbolt the tensioner.
Top tip, Never take off a wheel and rest it on the car.
Garage did it to me once, we didn't know rear brake wheel cylinder had started to leak, brake fluid was on the tyre so took paint off car body 😯

@@vladone428 best way no harm will come to the wheel and it is out of the way,stop you from falling over the wheel and you might yourself do a wheely and brake your back
I know a guy that took the wheel off and had it resting on the bumper while he was putting the spare tyre on. He let the jack down but the wheel was part jammed under it, put a hole through bumper and cracked the headlight lens. Ouch
What I like about watching Scotty's work, he just does it simply, just like I have to, on the driveway, no fancy workshops, hoists or assistance. Scotty your the boss...

I have a 03 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 and it has 120,000 miles on it. Never had a problem and I'm still driving it. Only changed the lower oil pan gasket and valve cover gaskets. Runs great!
my stepdad has a 2001 Ford Sport Trac with 215k miles. It has the 4.0L V6 and the rear timing chain rattles at times.
8:35 for me It was the windshield wipers that were vibrating, I thought it was the dash board too until one of the mechanics told me it was the loose black trim the wipers were attached too. They tried to make me pay $200 for a new one but I just bought a $20 windshield black sealant and put it under and sealed it. 90% the noise is gone. Only does it when on a bumpy road.
All jokes aside Scotty has taught me soo much and most importantly saved me lots of money. thanks Scotty!!

thanks for the video. i had same issue with a 2009 honda civic. the engine mount failed a long time ago and didnt notice it. once i started hearing a similar noise to this one, did i figure out the belt tensioner had failed because of the engine mounts having failed a long time ago.
Looks like the newer Honda’s are not holding up. I’ve heard about these kind of scenarios happening more often. You did a good job fixing it, Scotty.

🤣 my 2008 civic starter replacement was quite an adventure. I just wish the engineers would consider common repairs.
I was gona try do it on mines by it sitz so high in da engine bay no space 2 work on it.if i had a lift i would of done it
I just did one on an 04 element. Below the intake manifold. I decided to go from underneath...in all honesty I have no idea if it saved time or not, just a horrible job...

Very difficult to replace that starter.
Easier if you remove the exhaust so it's out of the way.

Took me 3 hours to replace a starter on those civics with a hoist and everything. Absolute PITA. Will never buy one of these cars just because they're a huge pain to work on

Wow, it really does seem to be a lot nicer to do car work there in Tennessee than it was in Texas. In Texas, you always had to use that big cooling fan, but in Tennessee you don't. I'm glad you are in a much nicer place now. Take care, and God bless.

It's amazing what you can see when you take the tires off... really helped with the fuel filter on my Dodge 2500 Cummins. Cursing is an essential part of any repair... When engineers go to hell, they have to work on the cars they designed!

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer and this vehicle have given me great service over the years and I got it when it was one year old and had low mileage on it (less than 29,000 miles). It has had some minor work done on it and no engine or transmission work at all. The regular work like ball joints and tie rod ends have been replace, and the lubrication of the vehicle changed as required..
I love my tsx. I have done this same replacement with ease. So much space since they designed the second gens to fit the j35 v6. Mine has the k24 so there is plenty of room all around.
"Now with a bunch of wiggling and cursing...", boy oh boy does that sound familiar. LOL😂

Just replaced the pulley assembly on our 2013 honda civic (same body) a few months ago and yes that is the sound of the idler pulley assembly

Thank you Scotty for this wonderful video, it looks easy, but maybe it's just you and your 50+ years of experience that makes it looks easier, but glad to see you helping us honda guys, also what was the reason for the pulley to go out like that? What was the mileage when it when out? Is it caused by harsh driving conditions or was it through regular driving
The bearings in the tensioner pulleys and idler pulleys on all kinds of vehicles go out all of the time, it's really just a wear and tear kind of thing. They'll typically last at least 60k miles, any time after that it's not unheard of to need to replace them. (Coming with a mechanic with 15+ years experience)

yeah real nice.. 2015 and already needed a new tensioner assembly.. but what's that.. had to literally dismount the engine and jack it up 8 inches, then drop it down 6 inches below where it would be mounted, rinse and repeat a few times... are you kidding me? First gen mazda 3 far superior to that piece of junk.. super easy to work on just take off a front wheel and the splash guard.. wow job done.. but a 2004 mazda 3 with 300,000km still doesn't need the tensioner replaced on the belts or timing chain... why is the 2015 civic such a piece of junk?/

I wouldn't try that repair job myself. The potential for disaster seems high, like oops, the engine fell out! I'm actually amazed that you can move the engine around like that with the tranny attached.

look this man is the best. I learned from him and other sources online to fix my car. I just installed new brackets on it. He has a since of humor about something very serious well all feat. Broken transmission engine mounts. Its not a bug deal. Be good to your car service it when needed and listen to him.Ive used public transportation 4 times! fixed and bought new cars. Its not a big deal .
I have a 2015 Civic Sedan with 5 speed manual. I bought it at two years old with 9,000 miles on it, been a very reliable car, good gas mileage and I enjoy driving it.

Those 5.0 litre explorers are awesome! I had a 1998 and eventually regreted selling it. It had 318000 miles and ran awesome and no major work had been done. No rust and sold it for 2200 bucks 😄
Hey Scotty, I see you use an pneumatic impact gun to tighten bolts and wheel nuts. Do you use or recommend using a torque wrench to tighten to specs?
Nah just a normal tool and then stand on it medium pressure with your foot and its good to go
Edit: this is for wheel nuts for other bolts obviously take it easy
He probably knows the torque characteristics of his automatic wrenches well enough to do a perfect job just as he did.

I would bet on it. I know the torque responses of mine, yet own far fewer and have decades less experience.
@@stephenarling1667 Really??? I’ve been a Maintenance Supervisor of heavy machinery and industrial equipment for over 40 years. I have never seen anyone tighten to spec with a pneumatic impact gun. To think you can or to claim you can is irresponsible. They make torque wrenches for a reason. Maybe backyard mechanic wannabes don’t, but career professionals do.

If you have to jack the engine up, make sure you use something soft(like a piece of 2x4 wood) and you can jack up from the oil pan, unless it's plastic.

Same. I had a ‘14 EXL that I traded with 82K miles on it and it was perfect. The AC wasn’t the greatest, but I loved that car. I was extremely regular on the maintenance and avoided all potholes.
That alternator would have gone another ten years !😉

Exactly. New OEM alternators aren’t cheap, and I’d rather have an old OEM than a new aftermarket. Besides, it’s right there on top and easy to swap later.

This reminds me of my Pontiac Grand Prix. I had the alternator die on the car. The year model before was up top of the engine so an easy repair. The one I had you had to remove the right front tire. Drop the A frame just to get to it. The people who design these cars need to consider those working on the cars.

PS -- Soooo much easier to do on a (shudder) Chevy. Heresy?
I soon as I heard it I said, “Power steering pump!” which is what a mechanic of 50 plus years experience, also first guessed. Wow
I had to change the tensioner pulley on my SI, much easier job on the K series engine, it only took maybe 30 mins. I did have a 1.8L Civic before, it was great, never had this or any issues with it.
Looks like you changed the idler pulley in about 10 mins

Honda isnt so good, i have honda civic 1992 when it says good at US and Europe, it didnt good enough in Tropical asean country, some of their stuff like pulleys, clutch and radiators is not build as good as corolla in same era. After tired repairing many things i sold my civic and never look back again
...because EVERYTHING mechanical on this earth eventually wears out. It’s the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics at work.
Rare for a Toyota to have this issue Honda quality is lower ofc
Honda makes the best engines but not necessarily the best parts that go around the engine .... Their reliability is still legendary but they still lag a little behind Toyota.
