That jacking up the engine didn't look right. Imagine the stress you are putting on the transmission by wedging the gear that connects to it. Scotty, this was so sloppy! I watched others on TH-cam and they do it without all the extra jacking up the car, wheel removal, mount removal, jacking up the engine, etc. You still had almost same problems getting stuff out and you didn't even tighten any of the bolts to the torque specifications. Hey Scotty, that reminds me of one of your other videos, when you said you were so disgusted with an old Audi because you had to remove the motor mount to change the fan belt!
You dont need the whole tensioner assembly, just the pulley. Or even just a new bearing $7 on ebay. The bolt is reverse threaded so clockwise to loosen
Tensioner shot in a 2015? I had a 2008 Civic with 200K miles and the tensioner was still good, but I replaced it as a "preventative" measure. I didn't have to lift the engine off of its mount.
Exactly. New OEM alternators aren’t cheap, and I’d rather have an old OEM than a new aftermarket. Besides, it’s right there on top and easy to swap later.
You would've changed a perfectly fine working part? You sound like one of those folks that do unnecessary wasteful things just for your own piece of mind
@@TTime685 Well he changed the alternator & that's easy to change & doesn't require loosening the motor mounts. On these Civic's,usually the tensioner & water pump's are changed at the same time since it's accessible.
Bought me a 2015 civic with 40,000 mileage 2 weeks ago I’m hoping it lasts few years without issues. The car feels amazing and the engine sounds strong feels like and sounds very sturdy. Honda said for 5 years they’ll fix whatever issue the car has majorly
I have 138k on my 14' Civic ex. Have had to replace a torque mount. Just had a evap emissions issue fixed. Other than those issues, motor is strong and the one thing I was unsure of, the CVT is still buttery smooth. I'd change the transmission fluid earlier than what Honda says. Reason being, you just never know. End of the year I'll trade it for something a little bigger. Maybe a 16' or 17' accord. Been driving a compact last 11 years. Ready to go midsize again.
@@DS..69 what was your evap issue with your civic? I’ve had the code come and and go. Never stable. I drive 60 miles daily between work and home so I can’t figure out what my MPG should actually be as I’m not fueling every 5 days.
Nah just a normal tool and then stand on it medium pressure with your foot and its good to go Edit: this is for wheel nuts for other bolts obviously take it easy
@@stephenarling1667 Really??? I’ve been a Maintenance Supervisor of heavy machinery and industrial equipment for over 40 years. I have never seen anyone tighten to spec with a pneumatic impact gun. To think you can or to claim you can is irresponsible. They make torque wrenches for a reason. Maybe backyard mechanic wannabes don’t, but career professionals do.
If you have to jack the engine up, make sure you use something soft(like a piece of 2x4 wood) and you can jack up from the oil pan, unless it's plastic.
Did that on my sisters 06 Toyota Camry. Took me 12 hours because I broke the nut on the tensioner pulley and had to go run around for 3 hours to try and get one. Those tensioners are hydraulically actuated and aren’t like the ones I was used to working on which use spring tension. So if you ever do this job be aware that when you go to release tension on the tensioner don’t jerk it with all your strength, instead apply a good amount of force (not too much though) on your wrench and let the tensioner slowly retract. Leverage is going to be your best friend so break out the cheater bar if you need to, but be careful don’t apply all your strength at once, slowly apply it. Good luck
Honda isnt so good, i have honda civic 1992 when it says good at US and Europe, it didnt good enough in Tropical asean country, some of their stuff like pulleys, clutch and radiators is not build as good as corolla in same era. After tired repairing many things i sold my civic and never look back again
Honda makes the best engines but not necessarily the best parts that go around the engine .... Their reliability is still legendary but they still lag a little behind Toyota.
I find it's easier just to pull the alternator then the tensioner assembly. EASY PEASY ...One bolt holds the tensioner...two bolts hold the alternator.
i recently replaced my tensioner on my 8th gen civic and i did not need to remove the motor mounts and jack up the car. I just grabbed a 3/8 rachet and extension and removed the tensioner bolt. You can remove it without jacking up the engine just in case anybody is wondering.
I'll say about the late 90s Explorers, the V8s were awesome, but the V6 engines weren't all bad - the SOHC V6s were wrecks with timing chain nightmares, but the lower trim-level OHVs were designed more simply and were much more reliable.
Mechanics run from my 06 civics tensioner. It only makes crazy noises when it's cold. At operating temperature no noise. I have no idea why you would replace a good alternator with no problems Scotty???
Definitely truthful about the 98 explorer that V8 will virtually run forever as long as you take care of it as it should. Only issue is rust takes out the trucks before it’s their time if you live in the north or near the ocean. My family has had our 99 mountaineer V8 since it was brand new I just hit 191k miles and it’s still going strong. Only issue is now it’s starting to show its age my dad used it for a bit and it sat outside. Rust is appearing, but major fixes were only needed no later than 4 years ago.
@@golferpro1241 these things truly last, granted the 5.0L is the engine you want the 4.0 with its trans was hit and miss like Scotty said but if you take care of it well it’ll truly go the length. The 4.6 was alright for the SUV but better for the sedans they got put into. Ours was garage kept for the longest until my dad started to use it for work. I’m truly tempted to get some body work done as it isn’t a lot of rust but it’s creeping out to view. Still got a lot of life left good for at least 300-500k miles
@@golferpro1241 definitely wouldn’t get rid of it, that thing can keep going. My mechanic is always surprised on how well kept ours is it’s over 90% original. It was also an around town car grocery getter

I battle with that stuff a lot in my Honda Civic 09 just this morning this same stuff got lose and my bet was off causing nothing to work in my car I have to take it to the mechanic to fix
What? New idler and alt. but the old belt? For shame. 🤷♂️😏
For shame.... is one of my fav sayings everrrrrr 💜💚❤
Nah, are you sure? Scotty wouldn't do that, he doesn't play for "comebacks".
Yep you got take a look at those special serpentine belts, no ordinary ones
He could have bought just the tensioner pulley and a belt and not just saved a fortune but done the job in an hour.
Watching Scott did all these videos and work, man, he's a mechanic legend.
Scotty telling to fix my own car. Me with that same honda civic is going "uh.....sure".
Yup. Done my share of those. Honda went a bit prematurely though. Don't make em like they use to! Great video Scotty. As always!
Not good!
He did it wrong supposed to remove alternator no need to jack the car up or take the tire off or remove motor mount, he just winged it
Glad to see you had a change of heart and moved back to the old house in Houston.
I wish he would come back. I am very tempted to drive up to have him fix my car in Tennessee.
That is not a DIY job Scotty!
Need to change the wiper blades
Scotty proceeds to remove tire, radiator, motor
thanks for the video. i had same issue with a 2009 honda civic. the engine mount failed a long time ago and didnt notice it. once i started hearing a similar noise to this one, did i figure out the belt tensioner had failed because of the engine mounts having failed a long time ago.
I love that you have a license plate cover with your name on it for the videos. I've been watching your videos since you started putting them up! Keep the the awesome work!!
I had the same car. I had 0 problems during my ownership.
Me2. 2010 exl
Same. I had a ‘14 EXL that I traded with 82K miles on it and it was perfect. The AC wasn’t the greatest, but I loved that car. I was extremely regular on the maintenance and avoided all potholes.
Those 5.0 litre explorers are awesome! I had a 1998 and eventually regreted selling it. It had 318000 miles and ran awesome and no major work had been done. No rust and sold it for 2200 bucks 😄
Very entertaining and informative as always, you are a walking encyclopedia of automotive repair knowledge!
Just replaced the pulley assembly on our 2013 honda civic (same body) a few months ago and yes that is the sound of the idler pulley assembly
Next week: Why the Honda Civic is the best used car
(You heard it here first)
Took him two weeks to go from Mazda is going bankrupt to Mazda is going to be the next best manufacturer
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer and this vehicle have given me great service over the years and I got it when it was one year old and had low mileage on it (less than 29,000 miles). It has had some minor work done on it and no engine or transmission work at all. The regular work like ball joints and tie rod ends have been replace, and the lubrication of the vehicle changed as required..
Old house in Texas!
Sounds like a retroseries.
BRILLIANT SCOTTY...I was always a shade tree mechanic...did it as a hobby and I loved to help people!!! Now I'm 71...don't move too fast anymore(Snail with arthritus...fast huh??!!!) Love your professionalism...you are a CRAFTSMAN!!! I ended up as a Glazier Auto Glass Master Tech...Im all cracked up...later Buddy...
"Now with a bunch of wiggling and cursing...", boy oh boy does that sound familiar. LOL😂
Me: In NC Eyeing TN
Scotty: Come oooooon down you're the next contestant!!!
Scotty how many more Houston video do you have before running out?
I had two Civics: 1.8 2012 and 2.0 2014. Both presented the same problem which was solved by changing the piece (tensor) showed by Scotty.
How many miles you have in them now?
@@nikooliver1 Hi, I sold both in January 2019 with 67,000 miles (1.8 2012) and 51,000 miles (2.0 2014). Now, I have a HR-V 1.8L 2016 with 53,000 miles and no issues.
4:17 'Scotty- "they didnt design these with much working room"
Me- "does any car manufacturer design there cars to be easy to work on any more?"
Market shape cars.We want car big inside and small outside.
Even the motor mount has some kind of electronic sensor on it! Thanks for keeping it simple Honda!!
you can tell when Scotty is wore out when his voice starts cracking lol
Yeah, he does seem kind of exhausted. Hope it's not a future issue.
Hey Scotty, that reminds me of one of your other videos, when you said you were so disgusted with an old Audi because you had to remove the motor mount to change the fan belt!
Lol Your torque gun sounds weak. Needs more pressure or something. Great vids, Thanks
You dont need the whole tensioner assembly, just the pulley. Or even just a new bearing $7 on ebay. The bolt is reverse threaded so clockwise to loosen
You know the mechanic is Old School when he calls it a fan belt :)
What do New School mechanics call it?
@@Mohapi_Tau serpentine belt
They call it a silly drive belt now, lol
Tensioner shot in a 2015? I had a 2008 Civic with 200K miles and the tensioner was still good, but I replaced it as a "preventative" measure. I didn't have to lift the engine off of its mount.
Damn that was a quick trip back to Texas
Ikr even brought all the tools back with him
Legends come and go! Who remains? The one and only Scotty The Texan Legend!
Scotty does a lot of praying 🙏 when he’s working on cars hehe
Especially Fiats (Jeeps, ect)
The plier on the pulley is genius, in order to remove the 4 bolts on the tensioner pulley
That alternator would have gone another ten years !😉
@Tim of free thought
I was thinking that too.
If not broken why fix it, the alternator.
@@metzmatu8409
Same question!!
Exactly. New OEM alternators aren’t cheap, and I’d rather have an old OEM than a new aftermarket. Besides, it’s right there on top and easy to swap later.
Scotty,
I would have changed the water pump too.
It's accessible when changing the belt tensioner.
You would've changed a perfectly fine working part? You sound like one of those folks that do unnecessary wasteful things just for your own piece of mind
@@TTime685
Well he changed the alternator & that's easy to change & doesn't require loosening the motor mounts.
On these Civic's,usually the tensioner & water pump's are changed at the same time since it's accessible.
I'm about to tackle my timing belt on my sti this weekend 🙏🏼
Good luck. I had mine done on my Accord Coupe V6 recently and changed the water pump
least you have working room
Don’t forget the ring lands and the head gasket 🤷🏼♂️
Good luck!
Bought me a 2015 civic with 40,000 mileage 2 weeks ago I’m hoping it lasts few years without issues. The car feels amazing and the engine sounds strong feels like and sounds very sturdy. Honda said for 5 years they’ll fix whatever issue the car has majorly
I'm going to buy a 70000s miles Honda Civic 2012 Model off a used car dealer hopefully it holds up
I have 138k on my 14' Civic ex.
Hey Scotty, I see you use an pneumatic impact gun to tighten bolts and wheel nuts. Do you use or recommend using a torque wrench to tighten to specs?
Nah just a normal tool and then stand on it medium pressure with your foot and its good to go
Edit: this is for wheel nuts for other bolts obviously take it easy
He probably knows the torque characteristics of his automatic wrenches well enough to do a perfect job just as he did.
@@stephenarling1667 I doubt it.
@@brianwaldo2642
I would bet on it. I know the torque responses of mine, yet own far fewer and have decades less experience.
Scotty working so effortless good job I couldn't even have time to talk while opening up the hood when my car goes out...
Heck of a drive to work for you clear back to Texas 😂🤣
Scotty made that look so easy
Oh shoot, I have the same generation civic!
i have a 2012 civic in silver :)
My Gf has 2012 in white great car
@@himynameisbrianw hey me too! It's my profile pic and I also have an instagram for it @stormfb2
If you have to jack the engine up, make sure you use something soft(like a piece of 2x4 wood) and you can jack up from the oil pan, unless it's plastic.
0:54 Arabic letters😍
Good luck
That groaning makes me shudder
Sounds good Scotty. Your new place looks better than the old one. I too thought it was an idler pulley.
It's funny you just have to get your videos just to 10 minutes
Do you clock out of work early? Dude has to get paid
Dudes giving free advice
I’ve had a 2014 civic for over 2 years now super dependable car it’s good runs good I’m over 120k mileage and no tranny issue which is good
If the Honda part was so good, why did it fail?
@ww ww But someone does and Honda should have some oversight of them and the quality.
Honda isnt so good, i have honda civic 1992 when it says good at US and Europe, it didnt good enough in Tropical asean country, some of their stuff like pulleys, clutch and radiators is not build as good as corolla in same era. After tired repairing many things i sold my civic and never look back again
...because EVERYTHING mechanical on this earth eventually wears out. It’s the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics at work.
Rare for a Toyota to have this issue Honda quality is lower ofc
Honda makes the best engines but not necessarily the best parts that go around the engine .... Their reliability is still legendary but they still lag a little behind Toyota.
I find it's easier just to pull the alternator then the tensioner assembly. EASY PEASY ...One bolt holds the tensioner...two bolts hold the alternator.
Oh boy. I have a 2013 civic. Same design. Hope my pulleys never go ugh. That'll be fun to do..
i recently replaced my tensioner on my 8th gen civic and i did not need to remove the motor mounts and jack up the car.
That motor mount looked cracked, and when you started it, it bowed dutifully to you!
From my experience the alternator or spark plugs , ended up dropping the hex screw to the alternator wire bracket support
This guy's problem solving, thought process, mechanical aptitude, and quality control is a testament to what competency is.
I have a 2001 Silverado. 265,000 miles. It's still a great truck.
kudos to this owner for really taking care of his car
Mechanics run from my 06 civics tensioner. It only makes crazy noises when it's cold. At operating temperature no noise. I have no idea why you would replace a good alternator with no problems Scotty???
This is my new favourite Scotty Kilmer video.
