If literally their best quarterbacks are a 40-year-old Tom Brady, one consistent year of Brad Johnson, Shaun King, and a Doug Williams you wouldn't pay for some reason, then the Buccaneers really have a problem with developing a quarterback.

Cam was truly great as a QB, he just had this thing where it was legal for defensive players to do literally anything to him. All QBs who can run get this a little bit, but Cam would take shots even running backs and WRs would draw flags on and the refs would just stand there. It was pretty sickening to watch sometimes. Of course the Panthers themselves never protected him either, dude would trot back out there after almost anything, no matter how comprised his ability to play or defend himself was. It was like nobody cared about his career longevity at all, and so of course it had none. It's pretty sad.

I would say Tepper's issue since buying the team is that he's a businessman, not a football guy like Richardson was. I think he's willing to invest (as evidenced by that contract given to Matt Rhule and paying Teddy Bridgewater 20+ mil) but since he's not a football guy, he doesn't make good football decisions and when those initial decisions don't pan out, the businessman in him decides to not continue throwing good money after bad.

Let’s be fair. In 2018, Alex Smith really gave Washington hope on winning the division, I mean he carried Washington to a 6-3 start being 1st in the division right before that gruesome injury. Alex Smith wasn’t declining at all before that injury, it wasn’t until after the injury when his play declined, and even in 2020 when his play had been declined, he still had flashes of his old self, being a field general, and managing the clock PERFECTLY well, and led us to the playoffs in 2020 despite being 7-9, even tho our record could’ve and SHOULD’VE been 10-6/11-5 if it weren’t for Dustin Hopkins selling on field goal attempts. If Alex Smith never gotten injured in 2018, he would’ve given us a wild card bye, straight to the divisional round, meaning he would’ve gotten us close to the SB if we won the divisional round

I’m a Utah Utes fan and I am amazed at the success Smith was able to have in spite of the many hurdles and setbacks he had to deal with in the pros. The man was a warrior and very skilled at what he did. Under different circumstances, he may have been far more successful than he was.

As much as the rest of our fans hate it, Kirk Cousins is the only one keeping the Vikings from being on this list.
Otherwise since the 90's it's been a long string of failed draftees and signings that would give the Browns some serious competition:
Rich Gannon (Became the franchise QB for the Raiders)
      Warren Moon
      Brad Johnson
      Tarvaris Jackson (rip)
      Donovan McNabb
      Christian Ponder
      Matt Cassel
      Josh Freeman
      Teddy Bridgewater
      Sam Bradford
Kellen Mond (We drafted him last year and he's already cut.)
And the occasional one-hit wonders like Randall Cunningham, Jeff George, Brett Favre and Case Keenum.
The only real franchise QB we had during that period was Dante Culpepper, and he too ended up ruined.

Two team to mention because they have been historically QB gravediggers: Rams and Cardinals.
Rams have had only one good QB career since Norm van Brocklin and that was Warner. Just within my memory, guys like Roman Gabriel and John Hadl were wasted or dealt away. They even had Namath for a particularly painful season. It got worse when Carrol Rosenbloom died and his widow got the team. The only QB worth mentioning in her misbegotten tenure was Warner. But someone decided he was surplus goods and he wound up being the only decent QB in the Cards' time in Arizona for a couple of seasons. He was shelved in favor of Bulger, who was given far too long to prove himself, and then a carousel up until Goff was finally allowed to play by the incoming McVey. They have maybe turned a corner, but I don't see Stafford playing more than three years before he retires.
As for the Cards, Warner was about it. I think Neil Lomax is still the franchise leader in passing yards, career.

As a Broncos fan myself, I think I speak for all of us when I say Trevor Siemien was our favorite QB since Manning retired. Why? Because after being selected in the 7th round nobody expected anything from him. After Manning retired and Osweiler left we threw Siemien into the fire. And he guided us to a respectable 9-7 season. I think had he been given a better o-line and a little better coaching he probably would’ve made a decent QB

Not to mention that the only QB success the Broncos had in the past 40 years wasn't even with their own drafted QB's. Elway and Manning both got picked by the other horse team. And the former is a prime example that being good at a sport as an athlete says nothing about one's skill as an executive (much like the Hornets owner). But because of his status as saint in Denver Elway gets away with mismanagement on the position he is supposed to know best.

I still think the Commanders, and really, NFL teams in general, should build a team with a placeholder QB like Taylor Heinicke, until they think they're truly ready for spending a 1st on a QB.
He's Jimmy G/Flacco tier, sure, but he could win a ring. Build a Defense, get an O-Line ready and when the time comes, draft the 1st round QB and get a running game.
Josh Allen came into a Bills team with a defense and fresh off a playoff birth, even if it wasn't the best team, but the defense could hold and gave Allen time to figure things out.
Alternatively, their QB will be good enough with the team.

  • @Hiei2k7

The problems with the Bears QBs over the years has been bad OCs, a meddling nepotism of executives, and just bad picks. Jim Miller was never a gunslinger or an OP arm talent, he managed the games well enough to win. Shane Matthews had been in/out of that pool. Cade McNown was a bust. Rick Mirer was because Michael McCaskey is a moron. Offensive Coordinator list from the 90s to today that you'd rather forget ever existed. Rex Grossman's OC was Ron Turner, but he had a good OL and RBs to hand off to, never had any receiving talent. Kyle Orton was another game manager but he knew how to make the offense work with what he had. By the time we get Cutler, the OL from rex's days is mostly gone and we get J'Marcus Webb....woof. Cutler also suffered from OC Regime Change, his longest running OC with him was 18 months of Mike Martz. Then we have Glennon, Trubisky, and now Fields. Fields is most certainly the best talent we've had at QB in a while, but he has an offensive line made up of cheap players, a decent RB tandem to hand off to, and nearly no name brand talent at WR. The strides are there, but now can the Bears put together enough tape by year's end on what we have and then get ready to roll out the amount of picks we're going to have (if we're a top 10 pick in a QB heavy draft class, it may behoove us to trade down for more picks) and the sheer clearance of cap space in $125 million ready to spend next year.
If Poles is the agent of change and modernizing the Bears front office, this offseason will show us.
