The Orioles don't recognize any of the Browns records.. and even tho the Browns were basically a cellar dwelling laughing stock for most of their existance, there was a time in the early 1920's where they had a good team (Missed winning the pennant by one game to the Yankees in 1922.) with one of the greatest hitters of all time, George Sisler. And even tho it was during WW2, they did win the AL pennant in 1944. Maybe Baltimore has something against the color brown?
The current day Ottawa Senators have banners commemorating the 9 Stanley Cups the original Senators won between 1903 and 1927.

As a Mariner's fan, I 100% expected our "116 win season" banner to be up there. All it does is remind me that we literally had one of the best teams in all of baseball, and still didn't even _make the World Series_

I would of left that banner as an honorable mention, as setting an MLB record for the most wins in a regular season makes not that dumb of a banner. I say that’s quite the accomplishment.

I'm a Mets fan and I hate that banner, I would take it down myself if I could get away with it, but a lot of teams hang Wild Card banners. I think even the Braves have 2010 and 2012 banners up in the outfield. Anyone who does it is tacky.

As a brewers fan, you missed them putting up a "2020 NL Wild Card" Banner behind home plate....it was an extended playoff field....They went 29-31...and got swept by the dodgers....
My Blue Jays did the same. We were the 8 seed and were swept by the Rays. Got a banner at Rogers Centre for AL Wild Card Series

The Lions are so bad they don't even get clowned like other franchises in their tier. Imagine being so trash the only time you're even acknowledged is when you do make the playoffs once every 10-ish years. It's an expectation for them to be bad. When other teams are bad it's usually, "What's wrong with.." with the Lions it's "Yup, they're bad." And that's the end of the discussion.
Nothing to cling to unlike other trash franchises like the Jaguars who have a Super Bowl appearance in their history and the Browns who at least sign players of note and have rosters that are in theory supposed to be competitive.
For a while the Sharks put up “Western Conference Regular Season Champions” banners when they had the best record in the west going into the playoffs. It was definitely an eyesore once we actually won the West in 2016 and the team finally took them down a couple years back. I think the Predators did this too a few years back.
Sharks could probably raise a banner like "Best win% without a cup" and management would think it was a good idea...
Predators are terrible, so it would make sense they would hoist a "We Had a Good Season" banner.

In 2017 the NHL celebrated its 100th anniversary. During the season there was a poll on the website for best team ever. The 1984 Edmonton Oilers won the poll. Edmonton raised a banner to commemorate the achievement.
As a Pats fan I support the 16-0 banner (I wish we kept it), and I would also support a 73-win banner for the Warriors.
Both of those were accomplishments that absolutely are worthy of recognition/remembrance on their own.
Further, I don't have a problem with division banners etc. either; especially for a team like the Braves who won the division a million years in a row. But a fortiori, if a division banner is acceptable, then it surely is also acceptable to hang a banner for one of the greatest seasons in the history of your sport.

I agree, I also think the near perfect banner is a bit humbling, which the Patriots probably still could benefit from. Six bowls in two decades, appearing in like ten of them. A sort of "memento mori" sort of reminder, don't let up because you can still lose. They could also get the same idea by hanging a 28-3 banner in their stadium.
As a Pats hater, I don't see a problem with a perfect season banner. It's a very short list of teams that have done that. It's no different than when teams hang division title banners imo.
Support the record-setting regular season banner, even without a Ship, still a massive achievement that won't be easily done again.
The Bulls handle this correctly, or at least handled it correctly. The Bulls hang division championship banners, which you could debate about if they're worth hanging, and added a "72" secondary banner below their 1996 division championship banner. All of their championship banners are consistent in layout with one another, so the then-record 72-win distinction is recognized separately from the NBA championships they won.
I remember seeing “1995 Wild Card Champions” for the Colorado Rockies back in the late 90s and thinking how desperate the team needed to be to affirm their club.
At least that was a full series and not a single game eliminiation. Plus, they only started playing in 1993 so I'll give them a pass for putting up the first reasonable accomplishment they ever made.
@@theMoerster There was no series. The division runner up with the best record got the wild card spot. The wild card started in '94 but there was a strike that year, so the Rockies were the first NL Wild Card team. Understandable they'd raise a banner. It was hard as hell to make the playoffs in baseball up until that point before the 3-division split and wild card. Simply making the playoffs was a huge accomplishment.

In the Rogers center there is a banner that says 2020 wild card series the problem is they got swept by the rays in that series and for some reason it still hangs up there to remind everyone of that useless season
In terms of the CFP, I feel like the smaller conferences like the ones UCF and Cincinnati are in should do their best to try and get a team into the playoff, not because they can actually win it all (they most likely won't), but the money they'll get will help the conference out more. Even if you lose, that $50 Million or more to the conference for its team getting in the CFP will help each school build its program better.

USC hung a banner for reaching the Elite-8 in 2021, while crosstown rival UCLA got to the Final Four. The Bruins only hang banners for National Championships, so they didn't even recognize their 2021 as banner worthy.
The Blue Jays actually have a 2020 AL Wild Card Series banner at Rogers Centre. Due to the Covid shortened 60-game season, It was an expanded wild card with 8 teams in the AL making it to play a best-of-3 series. The 8 seed Blue Jays lost 2-0 to the Rays. I don’t understand why that banner exists

Alabama has claimed several national titles where they lost their bowl game, and one with 2 regular season losses. UCF's title claim isn't nearly as bad as those.
UCF claiming themselves as national champions just made them look like clowns. With the behavior of their fanbase, I'm amazed that the American Athletic Conference hasn't fined the school for intolerable fan behavior. UCF is an embarrassment to college football. There fans will spit on visiting fans and will flick off opposing players who get hurt during a game. The fanbase for UCF is way too toxic.

1941 you're absolutely right, it's a trash claim. But the rest of them you have to remember back in the day they awarded the National Championship BEFORE bowl games. You're viewing those years through a modern lens when that's all the sport knew at the time. They're actually partly responsible for that change of awarding it after as they were awarded the title by UPI (who was widely recognized at the time same as the AP) before the bowl game and AP had already started awarding it after. Alabama lost to Notre Dame and AP gave it to ND so you had split champions and UPI as a direct result changed it after that game.

They even got shafted in 1966 being the only undefeated and untied team in the country. ND and I think is was MSU played to a tie and they were named co-champions with Alabama being left out. The poll that named UCF champions in 2017 named Alabama champions in 2016, the year they lost to Clemson at the last second. Should Alabama claim that one, too?
This reminds me when the Tampa Bay Lightning hung two banners for individual game attendance records. One was for a regular season game and the other for a playoff game. Before Amalie Arena was built they use to play at Tropicana Field, a baseball stadium.
Sometimes I wish they’d play in Tropicana Field for hockey. They’d easily fill up the 27,000 seats or whatever for games.
The Expos had a banner for their first place “second half” finish when the season was split in 1981. The Reds had a banner that read, “1981 Best Record in Baseball” because they got robbed of a playoff spot from that same season.

The 2020 cancellation of the NCAA Tournament led to some weird banners as well. Winthrop hung a banner for saying that they earned an auto bid to a tournament that didn't happen in addition to the conference championship banner. South Carolina women's basketball also hung a banner for being the #1 ranked team in the country at the time the postseason was cancelled.

I can kinda see the South Carolina argument, like how early in college football national titles were based on final polls rather than CFP/BCS/etc.
I choose to recognize NCST as the 2019-2020 ACC Champion. They were set to play Duke and the Blue Devils pulled out, meaning NCST advanced. And at the time of the Tournament's cancelation, they had advanced past everyone else. Therefore I choose to call them the ACC Champion.
FSU's says NCAA Cancelled #4 final ranking. Personally just hanging ACC Tournament Champions would have been enough since they were awarded that trophy. So unfortunate.
The Braves have extra pennants on the light tower for the years they made the playoffs via the wild card too. Carried that over from Turner Field.

Could do whole episode on retired numbers for non uniform personnel, or non-number retirement honorees in a team’s retired number section (broadcast mics, old time logos for legends before numbers, names & even initials (KSM in Colorado for longtime Rockie executive Keli Scott McGregor upon his passing in 2010)

I LOVED the UCF National Champs banner! Having gone to a small school myself (Northern Illinois) it gave all small schools a little validation with UCF being the ONLY undefeated team in the Nation and beating an SEC power like Auburn in their bowl game. Was it a little silly? Yes. But the fact that they were left out of the playoff that year was totally bogus. Even if you play a supposedly “easier” schedule (which I don’t buy that narrative. It’s all D-1 FBS football) being undefeated should count for something.
They were ranked #1 in the Colley Matrix at the end of 2017, which is an official ranking recognized by the NCAA and gives them a share of the 2017 national championship

You should definitely have the Nashville Predators "Regular Season Western Conference Champions" banner and the Minnesota Wilds "Retired #1 fans" banner.
UCF claimed a National Championship in 2017 because the Colley Matrix - an officially recognized NCAA National Champion Selector since 1992 - dubbed them National Champions. In the same way Alabama, Auburn, and other traditional schools have “claimed” National Championships to go along with consensus National Championships, UCF does too.
Heck, if you want a more egregious example from the last decade, Auburn tried to sneakily claim 3 additional National Championships (1913, 1983, and 1993) shortly after losing the 2013 title game to FSU… only to walk it back by claiming they were just pointing out that the NCAA recognizes those teams as National Champions but NOT claiming them… but still keeps them up on the football team’s website under “Champions”.
Falcons fan here, gotta say I can appreciate the loss after all these years. It kind of tells you something about life. Pride comes before the fall. Also you have to pick yourself back up. Also, a healthy dose of loyalty, to still believe in something that has let you down. That's all the lessons, besides that it still sucks haha.

And, yes, Alabama would've demolished anyone outside of the ACC, let alone Cincinnati, who at least held the Tide to 27 points, which is a lot better than how Miami's or A&M's defense fared.

@bread You only made the playoffs because UCF was denied a spot two seasons in a row after going 25-0. Don't act like UCF didn't do anything and the committee wouldn't have treated Cincy any differently than they did UCF if UCF never made that run. Both UCF and Cincy deserved to be in the playoffs imo, but Cincy getting in last season doesn't detract from UCF at all.

@@rynomclaughlin1595 Technically it makes sense that they hung two separate banners because the Presidents’ Trophy distinguishes the best record in the whole league as opposed to just one conference. While it could make sense to not have two separate banners, Nashville obviously loves to go all lot every year.
The StL Cardinals have a ridiculous false Banner stating 2001 NL Central Champions. They tied the Astros at the end of the regular season but lost on tie-breaks and went into the playoffs as the wildcard. They even include this on in media materials that show photos of their banners in the background. Considering all the titles that team has it's very puzzling.
Actually the ncaa recognizes the 2017 UCF as national champions so technically that banner is fine lol

To be fair about the Colts banner, that WAS the Deflategate AFC Championship, so attempting to muster positivity about that season isn't the worst idea in the world.

Back when Kansas City had an Arena Football team, the Brigade, the Chiefs Neil Smith was among the owners group. So when they played on Monday Night Football, they had a banner ceremony where the first year expansion team, which was actually the relocated New Orleans VooDoo after Katrina, officially "Retired" Smith's #90 jersey for the team. And then they got humiliated on national TV in one of the worst, sloppiest, penalty riddled AFL games I'd seen.

Another dumb banner is inside Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington. A century before the Seattle Kraken of the NHL started playing at the arena, a team called the Seattle Metropolitans last played in the city 38 years before Climate Pledge opened. The team played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and won the Stanley Cup in 1917. (at the time, multiple leagues competed for the Stanley Cup.) The PCCA folded in 1924 and the Metropolitans went in the same direction. When the Kraken started playing in Climate Pledge, the team decided to hang a banner that celebrated the Metropolitans' Stanley Cup title when the latter NEVER EVEN PLAYED AT THE ARENA.
The blue jays also have wild card banners + one for hosting the all star game (right in between)

Actually a few MLB teams have banners for the Wild Card. For instance, the Braves have 2 banners (2010, 2012) in right field at Truist Park.

Thankfully they've smartened up and consolidated, but Providence College men's basketball used to hang a banner for each NCAA or NIT tournament appearance.

I want to say that Ole Miss has a "2003 SEC West Champions" display on their stadium despite playing in the conference championship game that year because they lost to LSU and the tiebreaker to them. They are currently the only team in the original SEC West to never play in the conference championship game.
