Man, that should be considered ideal for a forced landing; you stayed calm, you thought things thru in sober manner & landed as pretty as pie. Great job, Gerry! Slainte!
I sub to a vlogger named Gerry. His vids never used to be scary. But with motors that stop, And bolts that loose from his prop, His adventures have become quite hairy.
Hi YankeeinSC1 Those are really good Limericks. The place I landed in was on the side of Vinegar hill which goes to a battle back in Irish history. That's not why I landed there though lol. Cheers and thanks Gerry
I wish I'd have been into PPG back when I was flying for the airline. I'd spent many nights in Dublin and Shannon wondering what there was to do other than curry houses and pubs. Looks like some beautiful places to fly. Like you however, my home area is strung from one end to the other with high tension power and cable lines :(
I have never been in the business end of any big planes but I would love to. I have been to Dublin and Shannon though... Beer helps Lol. Power lines are a pain though, I landed in the lee of that hill while a thermal was kicking off. Neither of which are good for health, if I had power and wanted to land I would have landed on top or the other side of the hill. The glide ratio with the netting and trike is pretty poor. Most new paraglider wings now are doing about 10.1 GR. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
I believe you told me that you and I are related somewhere along the line. I could not think of anything better to be related to, your an incredibly skilled pilot.
Hello Gerry, Gene from Iowa U.S.A. Enjoyed watching you fly. Your talking as you fly makes for interest as to what is on your mind. Great you stayed calm, now get it fixed and back at it again. Stay safe my friend. I'll be watching :)
I know the video is older, but I have only just viewed it. Very nice video. I appreciate the fact that you kept your head during a malfunction. I skydive, and know so many "sky gods" that talk a lot of garbage...until something goes wrong. Every jump I make is made with the assumption that something will go wrong. I doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the moment, but I always want to know my exit strategy at any given time. I am going to take up motor paragliding soon. Canopy flying is where my best enjoyment comes from. Jumping just gets me to altitude. For the $, I think this will be less expensive. Thank you for taking the time to do this! Blue skies my friend!
Hi RockFlyDiabloI have done some skydiving too but I really like the staying up bit with the paragliding and paramotoring. It's really nice to be able to fly low over trees and or up 10 grand or more. Generally I get about 4 hours out of a tank of gas and could stay up longer if I want to do a bit of thermalling. Thanks for the comment. Cheers Gerry👍
Oh man.. Flying over the fields there just reminds me of when I did some jobs down in Milton Keynes, and used to stare out the window of the plane. It always felt a bit sad going back home to Sweden. I don't know why I fancy the UK so much. Hehe
I can't say how relieved I was to see the fasteners on your property. Thanks for showing that - I just wish you had opened with that info. Very sorry about the damage; I hope it won't be long before you get it in the air again, and glad that you can still go sailing. Really hope you can put some stout wheels on - maybe motorcycle front wheels.
Hi Sean. It was not ideal and the trike could sure use some improvements. I did manage to straighten the wheel a little over my knee and was able to wheel it out of the field. Of course being able to walk helped too. I will start the repair and upgrade process tomorrow evening all going well. Thanks for the kind words Cheers Gerry
I’m thinking about getting into the sport, I appreciate seeing this video, not sure if I will, but if I ever am in this situation, I hope I’m able to keep calm cool and collected like you did! Florida
Hello Mark. There are lots of paramotor schools there in Florida. Definitely worth getting training. I know of Aviator paramotor there. New gear is expensive but there are lots of good second hand stuff available too. I fly without the engine too in the mountains. Unbelievable views. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
Hi njoyingtube1 This was a sad day for the little engine on my paramotor but I have had many flights since then. Great to hear you having the Craic as we say here in Ireland. Thanks for commenting. Cheers Gerry
you stuck the landing nicely Gerry though I would have liked to see a swan dive from the trike upon entry Grin I'm so glad you are not hurt, kept your head together well done mate
Hi Moondyne .joe I was moaning about the glide ratio of the wing but the trike and paramotor cage netting act like a big sail slowing things down into wind. That and cables made my landing options less than optimal. Still on a happy note I walked out of the field smiling. It's a pity I don't drink cause I would have been to my local with some wild tales. Thanks for the comment. Cheers Gerry
Gerry I like you dont drink by choice I would rather save my limited money for things I need , but a situation like that is enough to lead a man to drink! still when logic comes into it you have a Parachute above you and one in spare and the hieght at whick you switched off the motor ( or it stopped) gave you enough time to plan your landing, you obviously got home ok have you autopsied the Machine yet? and then what next are you going to put new wheels on it ( try mountain bike wheels and maybe suspension from a mountain bike ( maybe go to garage sales to find a second hand one on a good idea a Recumbent bike / trike then you could peddle your way home at the end of a trip!) Tony
Hi Tony I will make a lot of mods to the setup. I finally got my camera although I did look at aliexpress too. It's a thieye t5e and the quality of the video is amazing 4 k at a genuine 30fps although I would need to get a different pc to edit the 4k stuff. My laptop thinks I am having a laugh when I ask it to do 1080 60fps but can manage it. I was in Spain last November and I drank enough beer to do me until the holiday this year. My Spanish sounds great to Me after a couple of cervezas but unfortunately not to the poor people who have to listen to me. lol I will be pulling the engine apart tomorrow evening so I will do a little video of what's going on. More shed time Yeaaa. The idea of the recumbent bike is very good. There is a scrap yard within 10 miles of me so I will have a look Thanks for the helpful advice Cheers Gerry
Hi Bill. I had to land in the lee of that hill because of the power lines but I was lucky enough to walk away. I fly paragliders and when we go Xc ( cross country) we have to find a suitable field for landing. Of course a paramotor is alot harder to get home. The poor engine needs a piston, head and cylinder but will live again. I will build an Aluminium trike over the summer but I might get flying tonight on another motor if the weather holds. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry👍
Nice wiring job on the prop Gerry. You'll find out soon enough what the problem was. I guess you double checked the 2-stroke mixture before you filled the tank. If you're planning on landing out more often, maybe consider some knobbly tyres for the trike and maybe a mono-shock suspension. That'd be cool :) - Great vid - Thanks
Hi Zalida100. The suspension on the trike was a little limited alright. I had just mixed up a fresh batch of gas, I do it in 5 litre containers with 125 cc of fully syntheric race 2 stroke. That was 10 litres of gas with 250 cc of 2 stroke. The mix was good but something happened as when I checked the plug it was white so she was burning lean. There is still some compression but feels rough. I will pull it apart tomorrow evening. Once I know what to buy I will do a rebuild. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry
40:1 mixture seems a bit lean. (Of course I don't know anything about modern 2-stroke engines. My guess would have been somewhere between 25:1 or 33:1 approx). Hope the repair isn't too expensive.. Good luck
Hi Richard. The wheels were used in the build because they were available but absolutely not the best choice for a build that's true. I will be rebuilding the engine with a new cylinder, head and piston soon Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry👍
Just found your youtube channel and love your trike build. Did you ever find out what caused your power loss situation? Hi optionstraderman. My engine was too lean and it melted the piston which in turn scored the cylinder. I will rebuild it soon but I fly paragliders too. In the mountains here so if the weather settles down I will get my altitude fix soon but unlike paramotoring you have to climb the hill to get high enough to take off. Here in Europe there are many different paramotors. The engine on my one was a moster 185 classic. This is used in Dells flattop and many other paramotor factory units. I build autogyros mate and land outs are just one of those things. Every landing you can walk away from is a good one! Hopefully there is nothing wrong with your motor. Carb icing,as you will be aware,is a bit of a recurring problem. I am a CAA licensed engineer and happy to help if you need any advice. Fly safe.
Hi Thomas. The high tension electricity lines really focus the mind. There are lots of crops and cattle in the fields just to make it a little more interesting. The wind was from the other side of the hill which means flying in rotor and just for fun there was a thermal kicking off as I was landing. Other than that just another day at the office. I was happy to be down. I will have to put a tow bar on the car and get a trailer. That's after I fix the little trike. Thanks Thomas Cheers Gerry
The night was black and sky somewhat blue, around the corner Geri's 5 dollar rig flew. The brakes where pulled and a scream was heard, we looked to the ground and Geri had landed in a turd. With laughter and glee Geri shook his head, and with a loud voice he said " I could have been dead!" He gives himself a good harsh brush, and leaps back into the air with a real big rush. As he flew into the sky, he proclaimed " I'll do this paramotor thing till the day I die!"
Hi Captianjessie1. He approached me with a big smile saying you don't see this everyday. I chatted with him for about 10 minutes before packing up and heading for the main road. There were so many wires around Enniscorthy, also livestock so my landing options were a little limited. There is a tv mast on his land since the 60's and he gets free tv as payment. I was happy to get down safe and he has something to tell his mates in the pub while supping guinness. lol Cheers Gerry
Andrew, I doubt if there is any carb heater on gerry's engine. It's very unlikely that he will be flying very long if it was cold enough to freeze the carb. It's summer weather and he isn't going very high either. We'll find out soon enough :)
zalida100 whoa there! Carb icing has nothing to do with outside air temperature! Very common assumption but is deadly misguiding. In fact you don't get carb icing when the air temperature is below zero as all the moisture is frozen out of the air. It is however all due to dew point temperature and relative humidity. Can get carb icing on a summers day! This has and will kill people. There is a Venturi in the carburettor,it's how they operate. Venturi action causes a drop in temperature and this can cause carburettor icing depending on moisture in air and how the engine is being flown. His flight very much has the symptoms of this. I can't urge you strongly enough to read up and learn about it. Assuming it won't happen because it's fairly warm outside will kill you,it has, very many times in the past.
Hi Andrew. I can't get to the engine tonight but I will be taking the head off it tomorrow evening. I pulled the plug and it's white so it looks like the motor was running lean. Thanks for the comments and advice Cheers Gerry
Andrew, you're absolutely right. I wasn't thinking what I was saying. I understand what you mean. Thanks AK. My force is low at the moment. I took the engine apart last night and the list is long and expensive. "Fixable though". I walked away from that landing, so not a bad landing. I might smelt the head in one of my burners though just for the craic. A few beers, a guitar, starry night and my minion stove roasting the cylinder head while we practice NOT remembering all the words of any song or even all the chords. Bet we could get a no 1 song out of that. Lol Cheers Gerry
@@GerrysDiy Iv,e always dreamed as a kid about defying gravity and takeing to the air .But i dont have the courage to attempt it .So for now ill watch your vids.Plus these are expensieve ??? Cheers
The landing was a little tricky but I was happy to get down safe. I was in the lee of the hill which didn't help. Engine needs a rebuild but she will fly again. See you Sunday. Cheers Gerry
GERRY! I think your a nice person and know doubt your readers think so too . I really enjoy your projects and the bits of info you share and know doubt your closest friend does to " your wife " I for my part can't watch you do this activity anymore and I won't . Your whole life could change in a blink of an eye you either get killed or injure yourself badly, and for what; a short adrenal rush. This happened in my family It's not only the dead or injured person that's affected but all the friends around them to. Life's too short to pull straws like this. I don't write this to offend . just something to think about friend.
Hi Hemi. I agree and I know from experience exactly what you mean. At least for now I have things to fix and rebuild. Thanks for being thoughtful. Appreciated Cheers Gerry

Sounds like it's a carb or fuel delivery issue.
Kinda cool to fly around with no risk of really crashing.

Fantastic landing!
How in the world do you get the guts to try flying one of these for the first time???
I've been there myself mate! Miles rrom home, thunderstorms approching, darkness descending. Hope you sorted it out okay! (USA).

I'm interested in knowing what the cause of the engine trouble was please.
The piston had melted and wrecked the head
Am I losing the plot ? at 16.20 2 vehicles pass each other but on the wrong side of the road ?
good landing a walk away one . your trike wheels are not meant for sideways forces .Hopefully your engine is repairable .
Hi Richard. The wheels were used in the build because they were available but absolutely not the best choice for a build that's true. I will be rebuilding the engine with a new cylinder, head and piston soon Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry👍
Your an awesome pilot brother
Glad you're ok
Just found your youtube channel and love your trike build. Did you ever find out what caused your power loss situation? I live in Florida, and used to fly Cessna small planes, and carb icing was very common down here in the south. Thanks for sharing your videos. I'm getting ready to learn how to PPG, and have my eye on a Fresh Breeze system with the real float bowl carb setup. Fly safe.
Thanks Andrew. Autogyros are really cool, they make my little setup look a bit anemic. Thanks for offering help, it's much appreciated Cheers Gerry
Good job buddy
looks so fun but thats would be what would happen to me if I went up in one be looking for a ride home glad your ok
Thanks Thomas Cheers Gerry

i hope that the farmer was not too badly bother by your crash landing into his field and maybe you made a new friend in the farmer
Gerry's Waste Oil Burner the is good the farmer had a smile. and you landed safely
Sounds like possibly carb icing? You got carb heat on your engine?
Andrew, I doubt if there is any carb heater on gerry's engine. It's very unlikely that he will be flying very long if it was cold enough to freeze the carb. It's summer weather and he isn't going very high either. We'll find out soon enough :)

Andrew, you're absolutely right. I wasn't thinking what I was saying. I understand what you mean. It's the quick drop in pressure due to venturi effect causes condensation and sometimes icing - like if you let out high pressure air from a pressurised container very quickly etc etc.
Thanks very much for explaining what you meant. I appreciate it. (I wonder if it is more likely at high engine revs. Is it more likely in a 2-stroke fuel mixture than 4-stroke engine)?
Thanks
Safely down anyway that’s the main thing!
At 7:40, wonder why they have made a big teddy bear in the grass below you?
Hi Andrew. I hadn't see it in flight but I do know what it is. There is a model airplane and heli club on that site and it's their runways for the different wind directions. You can just see the windsock out in the field and the buildings are just the clubhouse etc. Well spotted Cheers Gerry
Did you ever find out what happened to your engine?
Hi Michael. I melted the piston and wrecked the cylinder head. I hope to get it sorted over the winter. Cheers Gerry
Hello Gerry. Great Video. Whats the story with the teddy Bear at 7.40 Cool
Hi Frank. It's a landing strip for a model aircraft club. They have different runways for the different wind directions. I didn't see it on the night. Well spotted. Cheers

Yeah, how about electric PPGs?
great video , pity about the engine , i will attach a few ideas to fix your problem with the engine !
1 . the force
2 . consaw engine
3 . lawnmower engine
4 . a very large elastic band
5 . home brew rockfuel
6 . get a push bike
7 , try walking
8 . new drawing board
all these ideas are copyright free and you are free to use them !

Are you required to have a pilot licence for this ?
Hi Mike.
Its a bit of a gray area at the moment with wheels but we fly in class g areas without atc. Cheers Gerry

I have been subscribed to this channel for some time. I did not get a notification about this post. Fucking TH-cam. I'm glad you are OK.
Beautiful countryside, sorry for asking Sir what language are you speaking?
and this is why I'm going to stick with fpv LOL
Hi ClockworkFPV I thought you flying your drone inside the colvert was cool. I have to give fpv drone flying a go. Cheers Gerry
Did I see a bear in a field ?
It happens:)
You could have saved the hay lol
Oh bullshit!!!! he hit the kill switch oh something happened.
