Maybe not everyone wants that ideology rammed down their throats by a huge building dominating the skyline. It's pretty obvious that the LDS church used its wealth to bully its way around building codes, like a typical multi-billion dollar corporation.
Would you say the same thing if the Satanic Temple decided to build their 200' high religious building in your neighbourhood with a 80' high Baphomet statue in a prominent location and brightly lighted at night? I bet if any of the locals across and around in this area installed any large statues of Baphemet, Budda, Ganesha up to 35'-0" high with lights ,where the Mormons could always view, you bet their lawyer would file complaints or worse harass them constantly to buy their properties

Show me an area where an LDS Temple has been built that didn't increase property values, decrease crime, beautify the neighborhood, and be a blessing to the community? The LDS Church will do everything they can to alleviate concerns of residents, but in the end, we live in America and they have a right to build a religious edifice and worship according to the dictates of their conscience.
The first temple community in Vegas is not exactly going the way everyone thought now is it. Cody Wyoming proposed temple is causing so many hard feelings in that area that the rift may never be healed and missionary work is doomed. The church puts these temples in areas that are not easily accessible to the average person and in neigjhborhoods that are "safe". How about putting one in downtown LV so members who need to, can get there by public transit?

the PHX temple had a very similar fight against it. after it was build, the local area wrote an appology letter. it was a wonderful thing for all people and none of the believed issues ever happened.
Everyone seems to be very even-handed with their opinions, which we should all be grateful and appreciative. I don't think I would refer to it as fierce, although I haven't attended the meetings. As far as land values are concerned, a study found that in 95% of observations, a temple added between $29,455 and $77,445 to a neighboring property value. Inflation was factored into the study. The study also concluded that the larger a temple is, the more substantial effect it will have on neighboring property values, adding 43 cents for each square foot of temple floor space.
So how much will the taxes be raised? How much taxes with the church pay to the community? Will the church pay the diference to the locals who only want the temple built within the local building ordinances of max 35'-0" and dark skies at night? BTW - all religious buildings must be open to the public to serve the public. That is why they recieve special tax statu. The public must be able to access the grounds and building. Respectfully of course. Tithing no donations cannot be demanded. so not locked gates and fencing. If not, then they are a private club, not religious buildings which would mean no special exemptions. Cathedrals and temples around the world can be visited by non-members. The Vatican , Hindu temples, Shoigan Temples, , Temple on the Mount, even Mecca. Just follow the rules and be respectful.
If you find the dollar value the most import selling point for a church building, especially one supposedly based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, you've lost the narrative. Any religion is supposed to be about serving THE community. Not A community. Equating Jesus Christ with the golden idol of the dollar is blasphemy and heretical. Jesus Christ tore down the temple exactly for this and they crucified him for it.

It's ironic that in a place where the land is so vast there is such an animated reaction to an edifice that will enhance the area's visual appeal and lead to an increase in property values in the area.
Not everyone wants higher property values. Higher taxes isn't a good thing. A temple isn't appealing to those who aren't members.
Living in a rural area, I can see the issue they raise. But they live in Vegas. If it wasn't going to be a temple, it was going to be a casino. And one improves property value better than the other

Should this go to council, all members who have received more than $5000 from the lawyers representing the LDS Church should recuse themselves. Oh wait a minute, then there wouldn't be a quorum.

Five of the seven council members (Knudsen, Seaman, Crear, Diaz, and Allen-Palenske) have all received at least $10,000 ($20,000 in the case of Seaman) from Kaempfer Crowell, the attorneys representing the LDS Church in this matter, since the LDS Church started looking at this property in 2021. Prior to 2021, there is no record of this law firm making any contributions to local politicians.

Respectfully, I think that there are plenty of evidences for the Book of Mormon within the text itself. People have found hebraisms (Hebrew sayings that fit into an ancient Jewish context) and chiasmus, a form of poetry utilized by hebrews. Furthermore, the individual voices inside the Book of Mormon are more distinct from each other than any fictional character from any American book in the 1800s, including Oliver Twist and Moby Dick.
You can believe what you want, but you can’t dismiss something from the surface level.

Current numbers show a conservative estimate is about 4.7 million active members with it probably closer to 3.5 million. I'm sure you've noticed like I have that ward attendance has drastically gone down compared to the 00's and wards keep combining and expanding boundaries.
Mark Twain would completely disagree with you about it being a good literally work. His words were that the book of Mormon was "chloroform in print". Though to be fair the church has drastically updated the BoM to fix the grammar, wording, removing racism, and punctuation. It's much easier to read the current version than the original. It still has a ton of "and it came to pass" which gets annoying. Moby dick is definitely a better read.
But if I understand your point correctly you're saying that your evidence for the BoM is the BoM saying so. By that same standard could we also say that Harry Potter and The Lord of the rings is also true history?
Why did you assume that they were dismissing the book of Mormon from surface level? The ex Mormon space is getting pretty big why do you assume devout members who were like you that left have it wrong?

I think it is one thing to move to an area where there is a temple and you know it is there. Great. Lovely. I use the temple as a great rule of thumb as to what will grow in a garden in that area. But to live in a night sky neighborhood and an area where 20 years there are established rules for the height of a home should not be ignored.

This is an architectural issue. There is no reason the temple could not utilize an architecture that is less intrusive to the community. I think those requirements are not exceeding 35 feet high and adhering to a dark sky community at night.
Often the intent of a temple is to stand out against the landscape. This temple is going into a dark sky protected community. Most architectures consider ways to integrate with the landscape. I would love to see the church explore less intrusive architectures. As a member of the church in Utah that loves the outdoors I am concerned with the architectural impact these buildings have on the landscape, especially at night. I totally understand how this community would be concerned with this project.
Please build a temple right across the street from my house but wait to announce it til I can buy a lot more houses next to me and watch them all double in value by the time its built

I can't defend it to non member friends. Are you aware the church has sued the tiny community of Cody Wyoming two times now? Cody is a small budget town. They don't want a temple on the high hill bla bla bla but they can't fight the billions of dollars that the church has.
I recently talked with someone who owned land near the Cedar City Temple. He said his property value quadrupled. Those who don't want a temple in their neighborhood should wait till it's dedicated and then sell and buy something larger and better.
Cedar City is also 80% Mormon, so of course there are no objections to a temple there.

The Temple brings peace and beauty to any neighborhood! The area isn't very attractive where they would put this Temple, if anything it would add to the area in ways nothing else would! 1. This neighborhood is zoned RURAL. All the surrounding houses are custom built and on large .5-2 acre lots. Nobody wants to move from the lifestyle they bought into, nor can they find this someplace else. Most of you couldn't afford to move here anyways.
2. There are no commercial areas close by. It is strictly HOUSES and a park and a school. It will never be commercial, casinos or low cost apartments.
3. Lone Mtn is a popular hiking destination that overlooks the valley. This Temple will be in the line of sight disrupting that view. Specially at night when it is lit up.
4. The traffic from the Temple will be disruptive to the neighbors, horses and other life. Remember, Residents bought into a quiet area.
5. There is a Chapel down the street that meets religious needs and a nice Temple already in the valley.
6. If you don't live in Vegas you don't have a say. Looks like half the comments are from non-local Mormons.

One could argue that the Temple wouldn’t be that much of an eyesore, and that it would be relatively quiet. Although I do understand what the issue would be with traffic, however I think that is why temples are usually built by church buildings to provide for parking. Traffic also depends on what time of day it is.

Tell me where in any of the Standards Works of the Church it says that the height or size of a steeple on a Temple is needed for worship. As a member, I am embarrassed by even suggesting something like this doctrine, but it is not! The church leaders need their architects to design a Temple that will fit into a residential neighborhood; think of Pres. Hickley Temples. To claim the church is being persecuted is rich; it is not. It would be best if you told the truth.
Building something like a temple will dramatically decrease the crime and other things that are running so rampant in places like Vegas. This will bring such a calming beauty to the entire area. Anybody that wants to oppose it now will see that when it actually is built, it will be wonderful and they will love it. It will also dramatically increase property value like nothing else could possibly do. Even if you don't like the temple, it will do wonders for the quality of everyone's living situation. What could possibly be better to build in an area than something as beautiful and clean as a temple?

This is not in Vegas. This is outside Vegas. They people in this area don't want to live with the lights and traffic of Vegas. That is why they moved to this area with these rules. This community does not have crime like Vegas which is exactly WHY the church wants it in this area. The church wants to protect its 69 million dollar asset by building it in a nice community. They should build it in downtown Las Vegas so people without transportation will be able to access it.

Interesting conversation. I understand the concerns of the neighbors. It’s just difficult though, because wherever a temple is built, it will be opposed. It always is opposed, wherever you go, but then if you build it an hour from where the membership lives that wouldn’t make sense. I wonder if a Catholic cathedral or a Jewish Synagogue or a large evangelical Megachurch would be opposed as well in the same spot. It would be interesting to document that across the US to compare opposition to the different faiths.
They follow the building codes. If they want to build a large Cathedral or Synagogue or Megachurch, they do due diligence and find property where they can do it . Tehy don'f bully code changes. Especially ones that have existed for decades or longer. This isn't persecution. Church leadership failed looking for property. The simpliest research would have found the restrictions. They need to admit wrongdoing, apologize and change the design to honor and respect the community. And no pathetic 'property value' doesn't work on everyone

They are not opposed to having a Temple; it is the size and height. Why can't the Church follow building codes like everyone else? I am ashamed to be a member of the Church because of their actions because they are not Christ-like.
Years ago, there was another temple somewhere in the US that residents protested because the temple allegedly took away sunlight. The church agreed to build the temple a lot lower, but when everything was finished the building turned out to be so beautiful that they regretted their action. Now they wish the temple could be seen in its full glory, but it is too late for that now.

There are certain SPIRITUAL requirements of a TRUE Temple of God , and these are well attended to in the design presented . Those who _got_ the shortened Temple regret it now that they SEE the beauty brought to their area by the Temple as well as the people attracted to the area , but SADLY , once built , it was far too late .

@@boysrus61 I've been to many temples, and they were never noisy from the people nearby. There tend to not be many people outside them, and it's more common than not that the people are being quietly reverent even outside. Traffic is only high during open houses before the temples are dedicated.

As an LDS person I can confirm that the height of the temple has nothing to do with the religion or the ordinances that are performed inside. There are many temples with no steeple on top !
Hi Chris, I’ve been witness to the process of two new temple approvals. In both cases, neighbor activism was aimed at such things as the spires. Salt Lake personnel present listened and nodded. Both city’s councils had already voted their approval of the temples’ original plans, but the Church greatly reduced the size of the spires anyway, just to be good neighbors. So when you see abbreviated spires, consider their milieu. Spires do have purpose; they are not benign decor. They have intent; they point toward Heaven.

I grew up with the Cardston Alberta temple . I highly doubt the size was reduced to be a good neighbor. The fact is the church leaders seem to be implying that the steeple is important to the worship. I have been a member for 50 years and have never been told this in my life .

I'm LDS and I think the ranchers there have a ligitimate complaint. but the lady that said no temple this size belongs in any rural neighborhood is full of it. as for a temple blocking the view of the mountain, I'm sure it does. and if no LDS temple should be built near a mountain, most the hundreds of LDS temples around the world wouldn't have been built.
The Church has every right to build their most sacred edifice on their own property.
As someone who lives fairly close to an LDS Temple, I can say The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is second to none on the beauty of their Temples and being respectful to neighbors.
I'm a member of the LDS faith and I attend the temple.. I love the temple, but I can totally understand where these people are coming from. If I lived in a rural community the last thing I'd want is more traffic and growth. Of course it'll be beautiful, of course it'll increase property values, but those things usually aren't the most important things to people who seek out places like this to live and/or those who grew up there and never left. That being said.. the church did legally buy the property and are going thru the proper channels to build there, so if the people are going to be upset they should look at those they voted for.
Obstructing the view of a barren hill is on the list of concerns? It's always something isn't it? I say a temple would greatly improve the view.
Or maybe people like to view God's creation without a Disney castle obstructing it.

Interesting that the LDS felt the need to build a second temple in Las Vegas. Most major cities only have one LDS temple while they still have a number of smaller meeting houses which are similar to many small to mid-sized churches.
As a member of the church the most distressing part of all this is hearing my fellow members say "well they should want this, its good for the community in x way" The pride on showcase is heartbreaking. Its not our place to tell others what they should want, instead we should be striving to humble ourselves and our buildings to serve the needs of the community we plan to construct in. Temples are beautiful to us members, but they are see as exclusive and eyesores to others.
I understand the concerns but unfortunately if it’s not the temple it will be something worse likely. Just the sucky nature of cities expanding. Here in Atlanta our area went from rural to traffic nightmare probably eventually pushing us out of state to Tennessee.

It's always hard to see your little town grow, but it happens. A temple will be the best thing to happen to it. It's quiet. It's beautiful. It draws honest, good people. It increases the value of your land.
We are experiencing a full moon right now and the amount of light it puts off is astonishing in addition to the lights of the strip. The lights of the temple will pale in comparison. I live in the Southwest close to rural horse properties and there is simply no escaping the light. I realize this is only one concern but lots of light is a side effect of living within 50 miles of Vegas and having a moon 🌕.
I sincerely hope the neighbors will find peace with the new temple as it will bring peace to so many lives blessed by its presence.

In the adjacent area , they did that and once the Temple was completed the residents realized that the beauty of the building only added to the value of the area , and they wanted to return to the original plans , but by -then_ it was far too late . @@chuckintexasperhaps some have the attitude of "those mormons". but i imagine that the vast majority do not. even if it was a hospital that was being built to cure children's cancer, residents have a valid concern that their skyline will be interfered with significantly. as a latter-day saint myself, i know that the spire itself serves no functional purpose. we have a number of temples that have zero spire at all.

The building codes and height limits (codes) both have to be waived at the start - The "tie runner" goes to the neighbors who bought their land when the code said no temples and limited height.

The LDS church is not doing itself any favors by coming into these smaller communities and essentially bullying their way in to build these ridiculously tall steeples that ARE NOT REQUIRED in order for the temple to be acceptable to the Lord (speaking from the POV of an LDS person). For the church to have their lawyers and members speak to how important the steeple height is to them and their worship and how it points to God (as if we wouldn't know where to look for God if the steeple wasn't there. What are those poor people in Mesa AZ doing not knowing where to look for God?) is soliciting false statements - ie., the church is asking them to be less than honest - so a temple can be built. Anyone else see the sad irony of that? Jesus never taught such ideas. Follow Jesus, not Russell Nelson (who, BTW, has the final say so on temple designs - the man who could come along and say - "I don't want such a hotly contested dialogue going on. I will submit a new design that respects these children of God in Lone Mnt Nevada." Why won't Russell be a peacemaker?)
Since almost every temple design is criticized by opposition for the height of the spire, it only makes sense to start with a really tall design and then reduce it after public comment. If you start with a shorter design, it gets reduced to where its purpose is defeated.
The church leaders sent a letter with detailed points to the members impacted by the McKinney Texas temple, and asked them to send letters to the city council explaining how important the steeple was to the religion. Wow, 45 years in the church and that is news to me that a steeple o a temple is part of worshipping. One brave LDS man at the end of the meeting said he was disappointed in the General Authority there to speak at the planning and zoning meeting because he knew the GA was not being truthful. You can watch Mormonism Live's podcast on this very topic. My warning to the people in that preservation area, if the LDS church wins this battle and a temple is allowed, the loss of the night skies is something you will never get back. 10 years living on a property and a home with 54 lights is allowed on the property near us. The night skies are gone.
