Yasssssss, been absolutely buzzing for this! Now, time to hit the toilet to pretend I'm having a 💩 so my kids will leave me alone and I can watch in peace!! Lads, we all do this don't we?
You chose the best option getting a 2nd hand engine and rebuilding it. I bought a 2014 Focus ST from Copart with a hole in the crank case. Same story as your RS4, bought a 2nd hand engine, just fitted it and the replacement had a big end bearing knock. I've just finished rebuilding the engine and got the car in for MOT today. Wish I just bit the bullet and rebuilt the engine when I first bought it. oh yeah, and get yourself a cheap welder. much easier welding a nut on to those rounded bolts than making a mess with a chisel.
Great content 👍👍 I find so many car channels are run by annoying people who fancy themselves. Not Dean, straight to the point, honest & no faffing!! Well done
As i mentioned - the advantage of rebuilding a 2nd hand engine gives you a lot of extra parts on the rebuild -- plus you may have some that can be sold at the end. Looks like a lot of work and a lot of cleaning .
If it was me, I would judge the condition of motor by removing valve covers and oil pan also camera scope cyl bores. Engine appears to be in great shape looking at cylinder bores and clean internals. I’m 99.9% certain this engine does not need rebuild. Great video nonetheless, good luck w rebuild Dean!
Not sure if you've tried this, but an old trick to loosening bolts that are difficult, is to try to tighten them first, it sometimes helps. (old trick i learnt during my apprenticeship years ago)
I learnt that trick in my apprenticeship as well! Also hitting the end of the bolt with a Hammerton shock the bolt also helps! Penetrative fluid is your friend 🤪
Brilliant Dean! How many of us have had an R8 sat next to us at the lights and wondered about the engine powering it? What a beast of a thing it is, again you make it look easy when we all know it would be mind blowing without the training and knowledge. Keep going...
Great update, and rebuiliding the second hand engine on this stage seems like the best choise! 👌Further down the road, when selling the car, nothing is coming back chasing you.. Anyway.... Wall mounted storage Shelfers/system, mounted tables well lighted, clean shop floor, engine stand, lifting table on wheels for ergonomics, parts washer etc etc..... A day worth of effort cleaning, making time/quality spend/delivered a hell of a lot better.. Just look at M539 restaurations. Keeping fokus on all "details" is on the longer stretch going to pay of big time in all areas incl the delivered quality of the finished builds.. But perhaps this place is just a small step in the pogress of getting a real workshop further down the line?
On the flywheel, the last few will always get more difficult as you've already removed most of the bolts. If you replace the removed bolts with new ones torqued down to the right spec, you'll find the remaining stuck and stripped ones are easier to remove. And yes I realise they're a horrible wierd M7 thread or something.
nice, i was surprised at how complex the timing is. never worked on one so i didnt have any knowledge of it. love that you mention our comments, i was one of those who said to do this option. i do think it makes a good vid too since if you had gone for a new engine it wouldnt have been torn down/inspected.
Great stuff!! Remember when we did the first prototypes of the chain drive engine (the original V8 was belt drive) at Cosworth (who were owned by Audi at the time). Great fun engine to develop and saved a chunk of packaging space by making the whole timing drive more compact. Great to see it all being rebuilt well.
Very impressed at your thoroughness. I would’ve just tested the cylinder compression, bore scoped it, pulled the cam cover and checked the timing. Loving the channel, proper 👍
Out of interest how many miles were on the second hand engine that you’re rebuilding? Seems odd the head gaskets are knackered if it’s not partially high mileage. These cars are very expensive new yet don’t seem to be very strong over time. Great videos tho love the content👍👍👍
Not often you see an engine being stripped with no problems, apart from tight bolts. Please think of your back and get an engine stand, so much easier to work on. Great video Dean, love the way your doing vids now compared to when you first started,
Good news you found an “affordable” alternative Dean. One question… did they sell you the engine without a leakdown test? I see normally when buying 2nd hand engines it is always a good idea to check for compression test proof.
Would be interesting if you could find the history on that engine, looks like a back street performance shop job, big turbos blowing the heads then a patch up n it did it again so they pulled the engine. Copper crap on the gasket looks like the "sealing" spray you can slop on before fitting, not sure I would go off book on something so expensive!
Having the spare engine for bolts is probably £1k saving! I am aware you have a relationship with Audi, but have you tried TPS? Assuming there is one near you - very good for consumables
Great video Dean I’m pleased yo are back. If you had a welder you could have welded a bolt on to the rounded off bolts and use a socket to undo the bolt which in turn should remove the rounded off bolt. It’s good to see the workshop a bit tidier not sure how you find anything in there. Looking forward to the next video.
Dean do you have an impact driver - hand held and you hit the end with a hammer which transfers to a rotational shock force? I bought one to shift stubborn fixings. Just had a quick look and Halfords have one for fifteen quid. Halfords advanced so lifetime warranty.
Well thought out Dean, totally agree with you deciding to rebuild.. At least you know its sorted before all the hard work putting back in the car.. More haste less speed 😉👍
Idea for a future video: Go into the differences and commonalities between VAG cars, VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat and so on - and if there are any differences in build quality or perception of quality. It would be very interesting! Thanks for the video.
WOW thats a rebuild engine by the looks of it a few times good thinking rebuilding it from the ground up i mite get the heads skimmed if i was you while your at it Good luck nice to see your positive about this engine
@@SavingSalvage I know about the RS4 i seen your Nightmare with it hopefully this engine wont be a total Nightmare for you Plus you have spares sitting around LoL

Rebuild a good engine… I’m not sure I’m convinced, but fair play. I’d just get it in there and see how she runs- if no good, maybe an option to take it back to the seller?
Congratulations on choosing the most economic solution to your problem AND for doing it properly. Personally I cannot wait to see how this rebuild turns out but expect nothing but total success.
Step in the right direction but I certainly feel you have too much going off at once which is never a good thing. Things get cluttered, things get lost, mistakes get made. Maybe clear a bit of backlog and hit the reset button.
We got a great insight into the architecture of this engine when you did the RS4 rebuild. I find it hard to comprehend how the mighty VW-Audi Group can design these highly stressed V8 engines with so many obvious design flaws! They certainly don’t seem capable of high mileages without major maintenance on some of the major internals. I presume that this engine is also used for the Porsche Cayenne, I wonder if the same issues prevail with that engine? That complex timing chain arrangement looks frightening to me! Great content Dean, can’t wait for the next instalment 👍😎
What design issues? It's more complicated than it needs to be, but it's a robust and reliable engine. It wasn't used on any Porsches, only the RS4, RS5 & R8 with a few mods between. Detuned versions were used on all contemporary V8 Audis & VWs. Nick
80 quid a cylinder for new rings! extortion! few hundred quid more and you could put forged pistons in and get uprated psiton rings with the new pistons
You are nuts! I hope you know how to put that all back together again. That’s some great work and really interesting to see all of the internals and the sharing of your knowledge along the way. Another great vid!
Awesome content as always Dean! My favourite part "Can get very confusing, so I've taken lots of pictures" haha.. You removed the cover for the chains and I thought no! Hats off to you Dean, love watching your channel as it offers exactly what is written on the tin.

Hi mate, You’re going to be joining the knackered back club with all that bad position and lifting I speak from my spine being held together with clips & rods. Hire a engine stand save yer bones,my spine is keeping me awake now can’t wait till next episode😊😊
Good luck with the engine, I think you are very brave even trying, those engines are a nightmare and from this video it looks like this one was an oil burner, the carbon and oil in the combustion chambers is quite bad. I would say that this engine has sat outside for a while and started corroding and that's why the bolts were so tight. TBH, if you could have got a bit of a discount on the brand new engine, it might have been a worthwhile investment, the engine you have is going to need thousands spent on it in parts and machining to make it like new.
Film as you go to Audi?..(would be nice if you`d let us leave the garage also..) Very nice build to follow btw, as you seem very honest as a mecanic!! Would by a used car from you, any day of the week.

Forget the chiselling, tap on a nut/bolt extractor, job done. Worth their weight in gold. You can reuse the nuts/bolts again in most cases.

A bit of heat sometimes helps get stubborn bolts and nuts free .
Use an impact on hex, torx, and triple squares. It is almost never an issue since I stopped using a ratchet.
For the bolts like that is the best to use hammer/impact drive
As you use to take the brake disk off for that countersink bolt what always got stuck
