You are a remarkable chap -not just the job itself but filming and editing it all into an absorbing upload . You deserve success here and clearly have a growing following which proves the point . Excellent !
Dean I take my hat off to you mate, I don’t know your level of engineering but you sound absolutely confident in this rebuild, you deserve every success in this but it does look daunting. Absolutely looking forward to this step by step build, you are an absolutely remarkable talent 👋👋👋
9:05 you should definatly change the Timing Chain Spokets as well the lower ones look rather worn. Also i dont think it is a good idea to not at least change the oilscraper rings
Think the big end bolts and main bearing bolts are ment to be one time use only, unfortunately if so that's another expensive email, if he does change them
Hi from Durham Dean 👋 👍 that bearing on crank is called pilot bearing for final drive/input shaft 👍 and I hope the few bits turn up quicker for you and space and memory ( easier with fresh brains I mean for what goes where In what order ) lol can't wait tho seems like you got some good support at end of fone too mate 👌 thanks for your time be safe and see you soon 👍 👋
Glad to hear the engine replacement is sound. That's a lot of parts to put together so hats off to you Dean for taking it on. Great channel, always worth a look. Good luck mate
As always you show no fear taking a beast of an engine apart Dean. The rain was was clearly coming down when you recorded this, I had to look outside it was so clear over the speakers, good luck with the rest of your build.
I can’t believe how calm you are in the face of all them bits! And the task ahead. I’d be huddled up in the corner of the unit twanging my lips ! Even if I managed to get it back together there’d be loads of spare bits left over and one gone awol in the block somewhere. Fair play Dean your one hell of a mechanic. Shaping up to be a class video editor too! Can’t wait for the next video ……..
Hats off to you, wish I had the confidence to take on major open heart surgery! You have inspired me to have a go at rebuilding my 'ickle MGB engine and doing the chain/guides on my full fat Range Rover.
Great work Dean. Back to my days working on Lotus and Italian performance cars it's always amazing how much workshop bench space this sort if work takes up. You're doing a great job!
As you suggested yellow in German is 'gelb', hence 'G'. Fascinating to see how you work, and I'm intrigued to see how the rebuild goes. Many thanks for sharing & good luck!
I really do like your channel, Dean, and really respect the way your doing this all. I'm from the Netherlands, so it's a pity, I won't be able to buy any car from you. Taking this engine apart must be an adventure. Looking forward for pt 3. Good luck!
Great job, you’re super thorough. Audi’s have been renowned for cam tensioner/chain pin wear (stretch). My Dad’s A4 3.2 Quattro with only 40k kept throwing cam/crank sensor faults. The car needed new chains and tensioners. Obviously a crap design or poor manufacturing. Makes me prefer cam belts if I’m honest
You due some fantastic jobs love watching your videos you explain very clearly what you doing I'm a motor engineer but 80+years of age so get a lot of pleasure whenever I see your videos keep up the fabulous work stay safe and healthy Phil
I've done engine rebuilds myself in the bone by but you're looks mind boggling to watch, parts price not bad considering, looking forward to watching your expertise putting it back together, top job Dean, as always.
Well done mate on the thoroughness I’ve rebuilt 3 or 4 of the v10 fsi engines in my time under workshop environment and I can tell you it’s not pleasant having service managers on you’re case when trying to rebuild 20k plus engine if your not doing it right don’t even waste you’re time very well done sir
tip new rings not necessary unless it has been hot just cleaning may be a quick ball hone [ deglaze ]as for ring gap we routinely add loads of gap for turbo charging with no ill effects
Thanks Dean for the detailed breakdown of stripping your R8 engine. You made it look simple & straightforward, but I think this job is definitely not for the faint hearted! Well done & good luck with the next stage of this interesting rebuild 👍
thank you Dean,,a very enjoyable part 2,, hope the parts arrive asap,,talking of parts 10/10 for having a memory and the skill putting that lot back together,👌👌
I made a comment about the state of your workshop the other day but having watched this video I have to take my hat off to you for your organisation of this tear down and also admire your bravery 😅😅😅
Tell you what Dean, I would not even attempt to rebuild that engine, the work involved is just Faaaaaa. Well done m8, I look forward to seeing it done.
Excellent Dean great viewing , maybe add a little music when you are doing the time lapse ? As it sounds a little bit Benny Hill lol you have a great memory for the year downs and rebuilds 😎
Fantastic, it's really outstanding that you can rebuild such a complicated engine like that without help. And making these excellent concise videos of it too. I think you could probably be successful at many things. Well done.
Great engine layout dean,I wouldn’t have a clue,I’m ok with a ford pinto,or a mini engine, that is way way beyond me mate. Can’t wait to see the assembly,no frills, no bullshit.💪💪
Looking forward to seeing that engine running. I didn’t realise you were local to Cambridge, I’ll keep an eye out for the R8 on the road…hopefully soon.
Great work Dean - so well documented - That R8 will be a proper job when she is done ! You just show that there's nothing to fear ! I'm just riveted in this build, fascinating- Dont worry we will all wait for the parts to come, Audi are sound on the prices - Great stuff!
I actually thought in around 3grand for all the bits too Dean.... so just over 2300quid is a result ...... great video as always , some job ahead of you when all the bits have arrived 👍🏼
Great job Dean. A frightening amount of dismantling and parts everywhere. The pistons and conrods sat on the edge of a small granny table were making me feel uneasy though. 😂
great vlog..you got some balls taking on your projects,,i understand you buying genuine parts from audi..have you ever sourced after market suppliers??..some times if you get the right manufacture there better than OEM parts at a fraction of the price..especially with them timing tensioners..someone must make them better quality..maybe an audi tuning company..and better quality....your skills are amazing..but why not if doing a full rebuild make the engine tougher than OEM and maybe cheaper to build..
Great work mate watched your knowledge and channel grow, have subscribed and got all my family to also, now to get my mates on board love the golf r content keep up with the excellent work and video's
Great video, have you/can you use TPS? They supply VAG group, they’re trade only but I’ve always got much better prices than going through Audi Part counter.
Hi Dean, I have an R8 in the V8 version and I recently had a fire in the engine, apparent cause was a cam shaft solenoid. Just came to mind whilst you were taking apart the engine, just wanted your thoughts please. Thanks Raj
Another great video fella, how the hell will you remember where everything goes! Looking forward to seeing it up and running! Did you ever get to the bottom of the Skoda Octavia dpf not re gening?
thats not bad at all mate i would have thought it would have been a lot more like 3500 grand i was shocked when you said it was just under 2400 pound cannot wait till you start the rebuild on that engine .
I am french and I really love your chanel even if it is difficult for me to understand half of your explanations 😂.You look very sympathic ans it is a real pleasure each time.Have a good day.
"Reassembly is the reversal of disassembly" as Haynes says 😂Good luck, I'd be having a meltdown dismantling something of such value that could potentially end up costing £££ more due to one stray fixing or mistake! Props to you 👊
It's called a spigot bearing and surely, the tensioners all rest against the 'slack' side of each chain so wear on the surface will not effect valve timing. It does make you think, all that material worn off the face of the tensionet has ended up in the engine oil though.
Am really impressed with this….when you have everything on the bench..there must be a system where it has come off in order to then reassemble the same way???
Wow! I thought the DOHC 2.5L Subaru engine with turbo power was complicated! Would love to do a video of this for my channel when it's up and running 😁
Fair to say, at £5k for the engine, £3.5k for parts, and another grand for sundries, you'll have a new engine for half the cost of one from Audi? Winner, mate.
Does the invoice include the engine block and head cleaning / skimming etc? I didn't see it on the invoice, just the gasket prices and final total price.
You are a remarkable chap -not just the job itself but filming and editing it all into an absorbing upload . You deserve success here and clearly have a growing following which proves the point . Excellent !
Thankyou mate! Appreciate it 😊
@@SavingSalvage Only speaking the truth -as I find and see it . Appreciate these uploads in the present format (without gimmics !)
exactly, please dont change
Takes engines apart like he's playing with Lego. Master of V8 rebuilds keep the videos coming
Agreed 👍🏼
Love the in depth explanation of things, clearly know your stuff. Love the channel and don’t miss an episode. You deserve this channel to blow up!
Much appreciated bud! I hope so 🤞🏼
Looking at all of the parts on your bench gave me palpitations! Another great update on the engine rebuild. 👏
Glad it’s not just me! It’d all go back together but it wouldn’t be an R8 engine when I finished!
As soon as I saw that bench I thought "hope that doesn't collapse".
@@bob900868 When the pistons were right on the edge...YIKES
It's so complicated from my point of view and I admire your confidence in tackling it. Thank you for the insight.
Glad it was helpful!

Proper Job! Well done Dean on being extremely thorough and whoever is the lucky buyer of this R8 can be sure it was done properly.
Think the big end bolts and main bearing bolts are ment to be one time use only, unfortunately if so that's another expensive email, if he does change them

Best car salvage / rebuild channel on TH-cam at the moment. Thanks for another video.
To have a lower than expected quotation from VW is rare. Best of luck getting the engine together again. Tanks for the awesome videos.
As usual Dean top videos broken down enough that thick people like me understand. Cheers
Great video Dean :) Looking forward to the build!!!
So glad you don’t put terrible music over your Timelapse bits. Thank you.
Great work Dean. Back to my days working on Lotus and Italian performance cars it's always amazing how much workshop bench space this sort if work takes up. You're doing a great job!
The bearing in the end of the crank is called a spigot bearing, its for the main shaft in the gearbox
As you suggested yellow in German is 'gelb', hence 'G'. Fascinating to see how you work, and I'm intrigued to see how the rebuild goes. Many thanks for sharing & good luck!
What a level of skill and knowledge required! I’d be nervous taking the engine cover off! You must have a lot of experience with engines
Fascinating. Unbelievable the amount of parts that goes into one of these engines. Looking forward to the rebuild
Really enjoying your videos on the R8 and the style of the videos, thank you for putting the time in to make them, all the best
Absolutely hooked on your content Dean. Excellent and informative. Keep it coming....... Take Care .

The big end bolts and the main bearing bolts are stretch bolts ( one use only like head bolts ) believe I may be wrong but most VAG cars are

I love the sellotape roll tool. Genius! I actually LOL'd.

Brilliant job you are a brave man to many parts for me keep up the great work

What jon yoda said - an excellent effort and channel, squire!
Absolutely amazing what you do ,especially having a job and family. Please keep them coming
Price for the parts seems reasonable. Good luck! Waiting for next video in this series 😎
So admire your work commitment and skill to do what you are doing. Look forward to next one. 👍👍👍👍
Just looking at that invoice they didn't even give you trade discount 🙄, great video as always keep going mate
👍Great Job Dean, things are looking up !! Keep up the good work 👍

Did you by chance have a meccano set as a kid .. great video 😄
Can’t wait to see that engine purring, and car on the road , hope you make a nice profit for all the hard work.
When it comes to fitting the engine back into the vehicle , could you show how you reprogram the new engine to the ECU please
Brilliant!, But don't forget Conrod bolts, there a one time use
Also the crank bolts are usually one time use with them stretching also so may need replacing
Great Vid, got me hooked from day 1, on this R8 engine strip & build, talk about a thousand piece jigsaw🥴
Are the head bolts stretch will need some of those if they are
I am french and I really love your chanel even if it is difficult for me to understand half of your explanations 😂.You look very sympathic ans it is a real pleasure each time.Have a good day.

Thanks Dean great video, how is the TVR coming along ?
Should have rang tps direct mate it’s cheaper than going through dealer as they put a markup on the parts

Can you not get the bits from Cambridge TPS? Tends to be cheaper and they're great, even with returns for faulty parts
Where did you get that detailed rebuild info with pictures from? Look very informative.
Fair to say, at £5k for the engine, £3.5k for parts, and another grand for sundries, you'll have a new engine for half the cost of one from Audi? Winner, mate.
